The electorate of Barbados decided to give the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) an overwhelming and unprecedented mandate on the 24 May 2018. The result was a repudiation of a hapless Democratic Labour Party (DLP) administration led by Freundel Stuart, as it was a belief by Barbadians in red bag-promises from Mia Mottley. We know the proclivity of human beings to want to believe in something, anything if it means being blinded to facts. Barbadians have shown themselves to be no different.

As we prepare – how time flies even when not having fun – to enter the early phase of another election cycle, the question being discussed quietly in some circles – is it possible the Mottley government could become a one term government? It harrows the mind of the blogmaster that after a 30-0 drubbing of the DLP three years ago some are open to the possibility of the incumbent suffering the ignominy of an Alan Chastanet in St. Lucia.

The pandemic is proving to be an x-factor driving unpredictable human behaviour, beleaguered electorates suffering from economic fatigue has seen governments of SIDs struggle to govern. An absurdity tossed up sometimes by political talking heads is that some elections are good to lose. Is it possible this is the case for Verla Depeiza and her unready team? A scan of the DLP’s ‘newly minted’ website suggest the party is a work in progress.

Barbadians accept that the DLP represents the only option as the credible opposition party going into the next general election (The blogmaster was unable to find a website of the official opposition party led by Joe Atherley). We are therefore vested in a competent DLP being equipped to share alternative, progressive programs and to present a competent team to implement same to move the country forward. Based on what we have seen can we say – are we there yet?

The honeymoon period has disappeared for the Mottley government and much of its post-2018 political capital. Although the blogmaster is not convinced at this point Mia Mottley will suffer the fate of Alan Chastanet at the next poll, there is a level of apprehension in some quarters driven by the hostile environment governments of SIDs are presently negotiating. Making it more difficult for the experienced Mottley are rookie mistakes made so far, helping to reaffirm a perception that six of one, half dozen the other.

It is unfortunate given the level of political apathy shown by the electorate, it has not given rise to a vibrant, credible and alternative political movement. One must conclude there are serious underlying issues preventing Barbadians of integrity and the other prerequisite characteristics to offer themselves for public service. The result has been successive governments who lacked the ability to sustain Barbados’ position on the socioeconomic ladder.

Now that Vela Depeiza has shown her mettle to win against internal combatants George Pilgrim from old guard and upstart outsider Guy Hewitt, is Verla battle harden enough to take on Mia Mottley?

  2. The people made a gigantic mistake in May 2018 and now are paying dearly
More than ever lies and deceit has taken the spotlight and cast ugly shadows on the way govt is managing the country
The Beloved and dear Constitution has taken a beating as never seen before as govt policies and plans makes a mad stampede all over its pages making way for what govt belive it is right in the name of selfish political interest
First term or long term this govt has plenty to be unanswerable to the people
Environmental issues along the length and sea shores of Barbados came under attack as govt policy failed to provide safe security for or reefs
Economic issues which have been glaringly mishandled leaving bajan households moving closer to poverty
Scandals left right and centre where use of taxpayers money comes into questions
Consultants fees and large cabinets yet govt insist that many hands make light work
    Meanwhile joblessness increase
Govt leaving employers to make new labour laws which can negatively impact on employees
Meanwhile govt sit on the sidelines in a mode of wishful thinking
Where is the change in transparency and accountability promised

  4. David
When will the possibility be considered that these systems have reached their end point and can go no further?

For this is not the first time our world was so located.

This writer was maybe the first to here suggest that a pendulum reversal was a possibility in the next elections of 2022..

At the time you thought it absurd given the percieved overreaction of the electorate in 2018. We guess it’s moment to thusly consider.

This possibility was informed by the idea that we, as a world, are at the end of this system of things. Once that can be seen it therefore means that the centre can no longer hold. The centre being the “rational” or predictable or expected outcomes consistent with the past.

The irony of all ironies is that Mottley seemed more capable than Stuart and Depeiza appears out of depth but all these political and personality calculations are destined to equate to naught.

  5. Where is my comment
I will share your response on other social media platforms if you refuse to release my comment
Not fair that you would censor comments which does not violate BU policies

i see you have been diligently reading book…lol

many of us indeed saw this unfolding from a very long time ago…..and no..”the centre can no longer hold”

and the intelligent, who it’s meant to benefit…will RUN LIKE HELL AND LEAVE IT…

  8. Folks the real face of David is being exposed
Politics has taken a foothold on what he thinks is best not said in effort to hide govt misdeeds
Fortunately there are other social media platforms where expression and freedom of speech is not goaded or directed by political influencers
David you are climbing way too high so much so that your pe..NIS is being exposed and it look very small when compared to ethics and a moral mind

LOL and and vote for who? I may not like the lack of transparency, broken promises, insincerity, failure to implement biting ITAL, tone deaf to a FOIA, and the continued Friends & Family modus operandi of political parties. To vote for any party that has not espoused critical alternative views would be generational suicide. Only wjen the m asses stop worship politicians as gods beyond reproach will we see real change.

What we need to do is fearlessly call out the BLP and ask the babyboomers to rid themselves of the selfish deceit. Often, we ignore how young minds absorb what is happening, then ask how the youth get so, they echo the behaviors of leaders and influencers.

Far too many in Barbados act as if they are compromised and just blindly interested in largasse and their next fix of comfortable living.
Point in question is the real reason License Authority is a quagmire of adminstrative jobby inconveniecing the public because of accounts.

The dictum of remaining silent to the ugly and live peacefully is a cancer. It is allowing a lack of accountability to take root that will lead to major social dislocation.

  12. Perhaps the below contribution is more appropriate for this particular thread.

    Artax October 2, 2021 10:40 AM

To repeat what I’ve mentioned in previous contributions, this current Mia Mottley BLP administration, will continue to create history, from being the first to win all the seats in Parliament, with her becoming the first female Prime Minister………. and resulting in the first ‘one term government.’

During the past three (3) years, we’ve witnessed blunder after blunder, whether on policies or a simple tourism slogan. And now they’re embroiled in a vaccine procurement scandal, for which they have refused to offer Barbadians any explanation.

Mottley was involved in politics from an early age, first ‘running’ for political office in the 1991 general elections. She entered House of Assembly in 1994, held the portfolios of Minister of Education Youth Affairs and Culture; Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs; Minister of Economic Affairs and Development’ as well as being appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Barbados.

Taking her experience into consideration, one would’ve expected Motlley to perform exceptionally in the of role as Prime Minister. So far, this has not been the case.

It ‘harrows me with fear and wonder’ that the only option other than returning the BLP ‘to office,’ is to consider the DLP and its three (3) time loser president, Verla DePeiza, and some of the inept DEMS who lost their seats and deposits in the 2018 general elections……. as well as the ‘political baggage’ they’ll obviously bring with them.

Approximately three years and five months after the last general elections, the DEMS are still fighting among themselves and have not PROVIDED Barbadians with any clear vision or ALTERNATIVE socioeconomic policies. I had to remind one of their operatives criticizing vaccines or mandatory vaccinations…….. is NOT an ARTICULATION of policy initiatives.

The political climate in Barbados provides an ideal opportunity for the emergence of a new political party, not with politicians from the BLP or DLP……. and people who are ‘jumping from party to party,’ such as Paul Gibson………

……. but with proud, patriotic men and women who are prepared to revolutionize the current political system in Barbados, as well as present their vision and progressive socioeconomic policies for the future development of the island.

  13. OK
David I see I had to take a hard line path of threats for u to release a comment which was not laced with vulgarity
Fortunately or unfortunately due to the length of the holding pattern chosen by u to moderate my comment it was posted on other social media platforms noting that freedom of speech was under attack on this platform Barbados underground
U chose to exercise the type of power than can crippled and has crippled democracies in the free world in the most vicious form
Shame on u David Shameful tactics that leaves me asking who is David and who influence his actions
    Not good

  14. What difference does it make who wins the trimmings of office when the strongest argument against BLP is they are as bad as DLP

You may as well say politics and internet chatter are distractions for the masses akin to following a football team which can easily turn hostile or violent

  15. If the voters of Barbados are so stupid to make this Government a one term Government, I will have to admit that I will have lost ol faith in my ability to judge things. If the DLP were in power I dare not think where this island would be now.

  16. Whether you post as ‘angela cox’ or ‘Mariposa’ as you did on another thread…… you’re sure to make a fool of yourself.

I’m sure that, from time to time, comments from EVERY contributor to this forum, went into moderation. All they did was to simply remind David BU and he rectified the situation.

Only a few days ago, Donna posted a prayer that went into moderation. She notified David in a subsequent post and her contribution appeared in the ‘time slot’ and order in which it was originally posted. 555dubstreet had a similar experience recently as well.

Oh, no…… not you. You will go on and on and on and on and on……. as though you’re being specifically targeted for being a known DLP yard-fowl.
The funny thing is, there aren’t any of your contributions that could be described as threatening to ‘government,’ because more often than not, you post shiite that’s either fabricated or based on what you read on other social media sites.

When one considers the multiplicity of contributions you posted to BU between 2013 and May 23, 2018…….. ad nauseam……. ad infinitum……….if people actually took you seriously, the DEMS would have won the last general elections.

    #makingamountainoutofamolehill

  17. Did you imagine that with 30-0 we would be where we are at right now?

With the slaughter of the DLP, some were imagining a second five-year term as we were dazzled by the brilliance of the first Mia administration. As she took the reins, some felt that a loquacious leader was an improvement on the taciturn Stuart.

What we have now is a leader who talks loud and says nothing. The sweet sounding promises made during the election reminds me of a persuasive young man whose only intention is to get his hands into the cookie jar.

There is an expression that a new broom sweep cleans, but this administration seems determine to follow the tracks made by their predecessor, and where no corrupt track exists they seem determine to create their own. Here are a few items that that I cannot forget

The quick signing of White Hoax shows that negotiations were ongoing even when they were in opposition. What other secret deals will come to fruition in time? https://barbadosunderground.net/2019/05/10/two-man-white-oak-making-27-million-from-restructuring-deal/

The overinflated price of the sport scammers. Unlike the current scan this scam was successfully accomplished.
    https://barbadosunderground.net/2019/05/05/40-million-port-scanners-true-cost-anyone/comment-page-1/

The amending of the constitution to swear in two ‘foreign’ senators and also the waiver of the tax and penalties (NOT TAX DUE) in the amount of $1,051,872.28 to Elliott Mottley which came out of an audit of Mottley’s accounts is reward enough.
    https://barbadosunderground.net/2018/12/31/prime-minister-mottleys-father-awarded-knighthood/

I can understand a few who seeing these events keeping the faith and continuing to believe in their savior, but the Maloney scam is the worst in the history of Barbados. Think of it carefully? This scam involves not only the theft of money but possible importation of a harmful product. Can you imagine 150,000-300.000 Barbadians having impurities injected into their bodies? If God is indeed a Bajan, it might be an inactive agent and if he is not?

To plagiarize “The Bajans outside looked from BLP to DLP, and from DLP to BLP, and from BLP to DL again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.” As the same stagnant smell rose to the heavens.

Do you feel comfortable allowing this woman to make changes to the constitution?

  18. “Reading yes. But at some point critical thinking is unavoidable, of maximum importance.

Reading tends to locate us in a forest of ideas but there are all kinds of other things happening as well, at the same time.”

Ase…we are blessed with that ability, which we can never get from mere man/humankind..

  19. Platimun, agree with you entirely..This is a rough time with the covid health pademic. This is certainly no time for the dems and the political nightwatchman.or any newbie amateurs.Listening to the dem noisemakers on here with their agendas we bajans living here got to be careful we do not let these mostly overseas bajans influence us.I am pretty sure one of them put this up to fly a kite to see a response..However although things are not as we would l8ke them at the moment countries worldwide are strugvling with this virus including the USA, UK and Canada where these noisemakers come from.Tell us bajans how well or otherwise these countries are doing.Amazingly they never mention these details but choode to pull down Barbados.Lastly this govermment lileothers worldwide has made errors but no government in Barbados is won by default and listening to Ms Depeiza , Mr Worrell and others it is clear they are out to sea and have little idea of what they would do instead. Therefore i will ask again replace this government by who ? The dems and the political nightwatchman? As Bush Tea would say oh ma shirt!I gone.

  20. The problem is not our government per se. The problem is that individual ministers are steering in different directions. While our Most Honourable Prime Minister and her Honourable Minister of Health want everyone to be vaccinated if possible, the Minister of Labour is threatening business owners for asking their workers to be vaccinated.

However, the DLP does not provide an alternative at all. They could not fix road patches or sewage on the South Coast. We have had 10 years of decay. With the DLP, our vaccination rate would not be around 50 per cent first time vaccinations, but 10-20 per cent maximum. We would face race riots, our businessmen would have fled the country. Therefore, those who want a second black disaster like Guyana should vote DLP, the rest the members of our honourable government.

We therefore do not need a government, but only a purge in the existing government. Radical Chief Labour Officer Hope-Greendidge, who wrote the scandalous letter, openly sides with the local antivaxx-movement. She opposes government policy and should be sacked immediately for gross disloyalty to Supreme Leader and party!

  21. the mentally challenged would sing a completely different song had their relatives and friends been injected with some unknown poison…sourced by the CORRUPT……of course the unvaccinated would have also held that blame as the ones who caused it, but our ANCESTORS ARE NOT ASLEEP..

wonder how many other country’s names have been called in a VACCINE SCAM…..am still googling trying to find one..

There is another big C word ……….. Corruption
Some os us walk hand-in-hand with the administration in the fight against Covid-19, we separate ourselves when corruption rears its ugly head.

You can pretend as you like but our election has become the selection of the “lesser of two evils”. The choice in 2023 is not how well has the BLP performed, but have their actions risen to such a level that an alternative choice must be made. And as the electorate makes this decision, there will come the realization that a candidate who emerges a few weeks before an election is too much of an unknown to elect to high office. It is better the devil you know.

Prediction: BLP gains a second term because opponents were mostly unknowns.

  24. @AC

I agree that the blogmaster may lean to one side (most of us do), but I think he is a man of integrity, Dial it down a little.

I went to moderation also, but I did not find it necessary to attack the character of the blogmaster. I have found that my moderated comments always show up. it looks as if yours did as well.

Today I went back to Mariposa to see if my name angela cox was a reason for moderation at the time I had posted on this article
Mariposa did not go into moderation

  28. I agree this government has demonstrated weak management with covid and i ain’t impressed either at how she is attempting to bulldoze a republic through without a referendum after one was promised. Plus the vaccine scam was a major screw up and her inertia on making a decision on either mandatory vaccination or giving the busineses the right to request proof of vaccination for entry hasn’t exactly raised my opinion of this government either. The question is who is the alternative ? I have not heard Verla nor the Rev put forward any alternatives to addressing the above only criticism. So I want both of them to publicly come out and state how they would handle the vaccination issue.

If wunna want to be considered to lead, well then wunna stop criticising and put forward alternatives. Tell me how you will handle covid. What wunna going do to diversify the economy away from tourism dependency? We de people want to hear these things if wunna want we consideration. If not wunna hush please!

  29. @John A

We need to up our game and fix our governance model. All roads lead to continual tweaking of the governance model.

  30. @AC
Once you had a list of a number of faux pas made by the current administration.

You should be changing the order of the missteps and publishing this list at least once a month.

  31. One term Government? Hmmnnnn- “David” keeps reminding us that the Government is reluctant to make tough decisions due to a pending Election. All I will say that a Government that puts its electability ahead of the health of its citizens does not deserve your confidence.

  32. @ John A October 3, 2021 10:51 AM

The way out is as clear as day: a vaccination quota with highly effective vaccines of at least 80 per cent of the population + indoor masks, but no quarantine for incoming vaccinated tourists.

This will reduce sick leave, prevent deaths and at the same time boost our economy and tourism.

We will achieve a high vaccination rate through compulsory vaccination for civil servants and all companies doing business with the government + allowing employers to suspend the unvaccinated from work. If a few thousand civil servants quit public service, it would even be beneficial because we have a surplus of human resources there anyway.

In order to implement these measures, we need a coherent government policy. Let me give you a few examples of incoherence:

On the one hand, the Minister of International Trade wants more foreign investment. On the other hand, a former minister took part in the Nelson riots, where participants called for a boycott of white businessmen in Nazi fashion. The two do not go together.

On the one hand, our tourism minister wants to boost tourism, on the other hand, we have the idiotic quarantine for fully vaccinated persons on entry, although the delta variant is already with us and the tourists are not responsible for the many vaccination opponents on the island. The quarantine on entry is the brainchild of the xenophobic BAMP president and is completely out of proportion to the current situation.

On the one hand, government advisor Enuff wants to build his Hyatt, on the other hand, the Minister of Labour is raging against businesses that don’t want unvaccinated workers in business. I ask you: should our hotels shut down because on the one hand tourists insist on vaccinated employees, and on the other hand the Minister of Labour just wants to prevent that?

We see that there are many such contradictions. We should not infer from this that we need a new government. Rather, it is time for our Supreme Leader to take the right decisions pro-business and pro-tourism and pro-protection of life through vaccination.

Most importantly, we do not need radical anti-vaccinationists in government agencies like the Chief Labour Officer. So a first step would be to fire the said obstructionist and apologise to our business association for her misconduct.

  33. The BLP will NOT lose the next elections.

They will have control of the AID money and will be supported by those who want to get the multi million dollar contracts to rebuild Barbados after Covid and the next hurricane / storm /flash flood.

  34. NOW LISTEN TO THIS DUMMY
All I will say that a Government that puts its electability ahead of the health of its citizens does not deserve your confidence.

THEN ASK YOURSELVES THIS QUESTION………WHICH GOVERNMENT ANYWHERE AT ANYTIME DOES NOT DO THIS?

I CAN TELL YOU OF ONE WHICH TRIED TO PUT the health of its citizens FIRST, AND VERY HIGH ON ITS AGENDA. DID IT WORK?

For the sake of clarity, how many commenters made reference to overseas bajans on the topic being discussed?

  40. The blp.propaganda machine and their propagandist worked extremely well with their lies and deceptions helping them to win the last election handsomely
That same strategy is being played except that Covid is in the midst and the govt now finds itself between a rock and a hard place driven by fear of the Covid results and finding it very hard to use their propaganda and the propagandist to undermine truth with their lies deceptions and misinformation
Hence presently the public eyes are awaken and scrutiny of everything govt does is the name of the game
Now what govt says is truth i not what the minds of the people see as truth
If a poll was taken on govt truthfulness the results would dumbfound the govt as about 85 percent of the populace would say No
This govt has played free and fancy loose with the people’s trust and govt would pay a heavy price
One can clearly see how distrust of govt is making it hard for govt to get the people’s trust when govt ask of them to be vaccinated even as death numbers creep up from the virus
Govt has been handed a bitter pill to swallow

  48. Your statement was an unfair one William. You cannot brand the whole blog based on a comment from one or two. If the blogmaster were to catch at every unfavorable comment it would mean expending precious time.

  49. WILLIAM WAS RIGHT MAN
TOO MANY UNSAVOURY COMMENTS ARE MADE HERE ON BU ABOUT OVERSEAS BAJANS AS IF OVERSEAS BAJANS ARE NO LONGER BAJANS. IT IS WRONG TO DO DAT

I HAVE ATTENDED SEVERAL ZOOM MEETINGS OVER THE COURSE OF THIS YEAR FROM THE DIFFERENT ASSEMBLIES IN MY CHURCH GROUP. AND I USUALLY LONG FOR HOME AFTER EACH ONE. THESE ARE FOLK WHO KNOW ME FROM CHILDHOOD AND WHOM I KNOW. AND THEY ARE HAPPY TO GREET ALL OF US IN THE DIASPORA WHO JOIN IN. THEY REGARD US GENERALLY AS THEIR OWN.

“Can a woman’s tender care cease towards the child she bare?” “Yes, she may forgetful be, Yet will I remember thee.”

  50. Skinner let me repeat for yoir benefit.BAJANS WHO LIVE HERE DO NOT LET THESE OVERSEAS DEMS LIKE SKINNER, SARGE, HANTS AND OTHERS INFLENCE YOU HOW TO VOTE.WE HAVE SEEN THE DISATROUS 10 YEARS THEY HAD IN OFFICE. FIRST HAND NOT AS REPORTED TO US.This is not amateur hour. This is a serious heal5h pandemic which has countries worldwide struggling not only Barbados. Thus far i believe most bajans are happy with the efforts of this government in this fight so far. These dems are desperate and if we make the stupid mistake of voting for them in under 15 years we will again be in ducks guts while the overseas dems relax snd make mock sport at us.They have hidden agendas do not be fooled by talk of duopoly etc.I gone.
