An approach to creating new pathways to generate economic activity by the Mottley administration has been to discover new and deepen existing relationships with African countries. It is axiomatic that an island built on slave labour should prefer to nurture a wholesome relationship with the Mother Country. Despite the political noise created when Prime Minister Mottley toured African countries early in her tenure, it seems a no-brainer if one considers that commercial trade with traditional markets has increasingly been adversely affected by the geopolitics of the More Developed Countries (MDCs).

Unfortunately in the last 20 years, to pick the period of worse social and economic decline, Barbados has experienced a falloff in thought leadership among key stakeholders – government; public sector, private sector, non governmental organizations; trade unions. The easy path to exploit a service/tourism based economy popularized by the Owen Arthur AND vigorously pursued by his successors has landed the gem of the Caribbean in the spot of bother we find ourselves.

The news that two Barbadian Fintech companies GIFTS and IPAY have signed an agreement with a major Nigerian service provider to allow entry to the Nigerian and potentially to the wider African market represent baby steps but encouraging nevertheless. The Barbados Investment Development Corporation (BIDC) must continue with this kind of trade penetration facilitated by our Embassy/High Commissions. Appointments to these outposts are perceived by the public as a sweet deal with the opportunity to acquire ‘perks’ to feast on return from the overseas assignment.

Barbadians have developed a level of entitlement given our passage in a pre-globalized world. To compete in the present AND future marketplace, strategies to facilitate and sustain a good number on the Human Development Index (HDI) demands urgent change. No ifs or buts. Many years of debate in this space (search BU Archives using tag ‘governance’) and elsewhere point to radical changes that must occur if Barbados is to disrupt the trajectory the social and economic free-fall direction the country continues to be locked. It must begin with key changes to how we educate our people. It must begin with key changes to the governance structure. It must start …

The blogmaster has observed the attempt by the government to fast track digital transformation in the public sector and be a lead influencer in the Barbados space. In October of 2018 the Mottley administration set up a regulatory sandbox administered by the Central Bank of Barbados to allow fintech companies the space to innovate. There was the introduction of robotics at the teaching college. All of this is commendable but the pace must quicken to achieve meaningful outcomes in a world that is on the move. The last administration started on a similar journey to significantly increase penetration to domestic energy supply with renewables, over a decade later we have fallen short at where we should have been. Given the current state of affairs in the country mixed with our obligation to give the next generation a fighting chance to build and protect a quality life, WE must not continue with the vacuous and lethargic approach to leading our affairs.

A favourite quote of the blogmaster is ‘uneasy lies the head that wears the crown’, many think they know but in actuality they know not. The upside is that this is the scenario that gives rise to good leaders. There is a lot the country needs to do and it is good to see a few reforms have started. Let’s hope that more can be completed to quicken the pace of transformation to lead to diversification of our economy and the knock-on benefit to the social landscape of Barbados.

  1. The Trinidadians have a major influence on commerce in Barbados, who in turn are backed heavily by their surrogates from “Mother India”. There are many individuals who come onto BU who would rather pick a fight with the so-called overseas crew or concentrate on their accents rather then focus on the cold reality that their country is been controlled and manipulated by minority groups who do not have their interests at heart.

I will repeat once more that the introduction of Mpesa into the Kenya economy has brought 10% of their population out of poverty. Are you reading this Mia Mottley?

  2. WURA-War-on-U Avatar

    I repeat:

it was a long term plan, they knew Africa was calling Africans in the diaspora home since 2017 and kept it secret and the information well hidden away from the BLACK population, both evil corrupt governments did that……..that’s when the scam was put in place to run around the Caribbean setting up these Fintech bullshit companies so they will have a resume to enter the continent…

  3. Which makes most economic sense? To run to the Chinese or the IMF to beg for yet another loan; or to invite Mpesa into Barbados which could allow 10% of Barbadians to move out of poverty?

  5. It’s best they allow the Nigerians who have DECADES of experience and an extremely STRONG SKILL SET in monetary things to control the commerce and push out these syrian/indian/white cartels…who are parasites in African lives.

  6. Closer to home we have thousands of well heeled black Americans who have the finances to transform our economy. The same could be said of our African brothers and sisters on the African continent. I would be happy to see Barbados minority business community replaced by fellow blacks.

  10. Hmmmm……….. interesting.

Coincidentally, there are also “many individuals who come onto BU” believing they are more aware of what’s going on in Barbados than those of us who live here. One particular individual who, after reading an Adrian Greene’s article, made an absurd comment that Greene’s awareness of issues in the island meant he probably lived overseas.
Or, that Kemar Roach securing a contract to play county cricket in England would give him much needed exposure.
What about ‘saying,’ without any substantiating evidence that, of all the Caribbean islands, Barbados is the most unprepared for a hurricane?

Are we not supposed to interpret those prejudiced types of remarks to be “picking fights with the so-called stay at home Bajan crew?”

Because we may not come to this forum to repeat ‘minority thieves’ or ‘slave society,’ with monotonous regularity DOES NOT MEAN we’re NOT AWARE Barbados “is being controlled and manipulated by minority groups who do not have our interests at heart.”

But, more importantly, what significant objectives have been achieved when we look beyond the rhetoric?

On several occasions, I have commented on T&T’s influence on our economy and how conglomerates such as ANSA McAL and Massy, control the wholesale and retail sectors. Massy, for example, imports Trinidadian products through their distribution/wholesale companies and retail them at Massy owned retail outlets. They now have two budget outlets….. SoLo in Sargeant’s Village and Montrose, both in Christ Church, where allowing them to compete with supermarkets such as Cherish, Popular and Channell’s.

Unfortunately, it seems as though some of you people don’t believe it’s about time this unproductive nonsense about ‘overseas and stay at home Bajans’ come to an end.

  12. Deepening relationships in the motherland continues.

Foreign Affairs P.S Ambassador Macharia Kamau has hailed #Barbados in its resolve to open an Embassy in Nairobi saying the opening will further strengthen the relations between the two countries. PS said this when he hosted Ms. Donna Forde, Deputy PS, of the Barbados Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade who is in Kenya for the preparatory process in readiness for the opening of the Embassy. PS Kamau and Ms. Forde also reviewed the progress of the MOU signed during the high-level visits.

Mpesa is owned by Vodaphone and a Kenyan mobile network operator. Even with Mpesa success in Kenya and other African countries, their trials in India and Romania et al, were bombs.
You keep with a sound bite about ‘reducing poverty in Kenya by 10%”, which maybe accurate. What about all the other places Mpesa operates?
The costs of such an enterprise in a very small market like Barbados are not for the feint of heart. Wasn’t the local crypto company looking at similar? All the major banks have this technology too. Digicel bought a Bajan firm a few years back, who had a significant presence in the back end of financial transactions.
I would think they might be the one, but they have a whole host of other businesses issues to deal with.

  14. @ David,

If you cannot see the irony of a group of minority Barbadian residents been allowed to jump the queue to claim their perceived right to carry out business activities in Nigeria prior to some form of reconciliation between our Nigerian brothers and sisters and their Caribbean black family then you are been disrespectful towards our ancestors.

Should there not be a considerable period where we at least come together as a people and look back and accept that our Nigerian brothers made a mistake in selling off their own kith and kin. If we are to carry out trade with African countries there should be a process allied with a set of rituals which should be carried out first, prior to commerce taking place. We have to atone for our ancestors. It would appear that this government is only motivated by Barbados economy. Nothing else counts for them.

If you do not recognise this than I pity your poor lost soul.

  15. “Closer to home we have thousands of well heeled black Americans who have the finances to transform our economy. ”

10 steps to Africa 10 steps to dub
they are Africans living in America
there are 14,000,000+ blacks in USA
there are 140,000,000+ blacks in the African diaspora

  16. @NO
Interesting that you mentioned Romania and India. These two countries are ‘technology savvy’.
The failure that you report could be the result of these countries “ring-fencing their own companies and keeping foreigners out’.
Most stories need a deeper dig.

  17. The local government is wickedminded and disrespectful.to African ancestors, LIVING descendants on the island whose existence right to HAVE A VOICE they IGNORED, .AND the African continent to rush these African-hating minorities IN FRONT OF and before African reconciliation and descendants….

goes to show just how twisted their priorities are..

  18. Even worse is when a simple and general statement is lumped with others, or an attempt to tie a disparate group of people with a single knot. That’s a lazy discussion; an attempt to ridicule and silence,

There is a video going around, i have no clue about the details, but it concerns the “ritual” surrounding putting the Barbados flag in the grave where something or other was buries…when flags are not supposed to touch the ground, don’t know if the flag was buried or not…but the orator and others seem to think that it was, we should ask Adonijah.

    @ all
What I find fascinating is the constant opposition to T& T companies operating in Barbados.
When our manufacturing sector was showing some progress in the 70s and 80s T&T was one of our biggest markets. At that time there a was number of well established Black Barbadian enterprises. Of course they have been wiped out because of the visionless successive administrations.
Secondly, Massey was given the green light by Barbados Shipping and Trading ( BST) that had no intentions of changing its archaic retail model.
Quite frankly,Trinidadians intensified their corporate presence during the 80s when we were struggling with our economy and our real estate market was in decline. Trinidadians were awashed with money and afraid of a rising crime rate. Many of them invested in local real estate.
It’s pure folly to berate another CARICOM country while turning a blind eye to the white expatriates who are allowed to rape our country and treat our workers like pig shit.
If our methods of doing business are not radically adjusting to the new business models it does not make sense blaming others. The traditional white corporate barons, ho have controlled trade in all major areas are to blame.
They made billions in agriculture , shipping, tourism, retail and all other sectors. They were content with models built on low wages ,rampant racism and blessings from the corrupt Duopoly.
We are always giving them a pass because we seem afraid to call it or tell it as it is. If Massey were not here, hundreds of jobs would have been lost and the workers would be walking up and down begging for their severance pay and NIS benefits.
We need to stop being so bogus when dealing with how our economy has landed where it is.
Time to stop wasting time . I don’t hear all of this opposition when other foreign retail outlets come here.
Once it’s a Caribbean entity we all over the place talking crap. Same with Sandals. Look at how quickly Sandals is renovating its business model to reflect the COVID impact.
In the meanwhile the local tourism cry babies are actually practicing corporate blackmail to extract more from the government.

  42. “Thirty years after becoming a republic……… Should we be surprised with current events coming out from South Africa.”

    That’s not quite true

    1934
The country became a sovereign nation state within the British Empire

    1948
Apartheid started with white minority Government

    1961
The monarchy came to an end on 31 May 1961, as the consequence of a 1960 referendum and the Republic of South Africa

    1994
    Apartheid ended
Blacks (all races) got right to vote
    Mandela became President

Republic is term used for Barbados Independence (due November 2021 as per announcement 2020 ending Queen’s tenure)

I think an independent Barbados should formalise it’s links with Africa and establish a more organic relationship as a satalite state in African Union with rights for it’s peoples

  48. @ 555dubstreet,
    I stand to be corrected.
@ The ZR Lady and Northern Observer,
I have been to Kenya on a number of occasions. Mpesa is an amazing money wallet. Kenya operates very much like Barbados. We have ZR vans and they have Matatu vans which are painted with murals, play reggae music and are decked out with tv screens.

Most Kenyans are hustlers. Everybody is selling something. This is the beauty of Mpesa the unbanked can set up their small businesses and have the ability to scale up their business. The 10% figure was not a sound bite. This statistic was obtained by research work carried out in Kenya.

Mpesa is prove that you do not not need a bricks and mortar bank to offer a banking service. In the same way that Barbados does not need to dig up the whole of the island to bury tonnes and tonnes of electric cables when a high capacity of electricity can be produced via solar photovoltaic panels and stored in batteries.

The world is moving on fast yet Barbados needs to catch up.
