I wish to congratulate the BLP government on their handling of the Covid 19 in 2020.

Now that the various “versions” of the original Virus has reached here and the infection rate and deaths are spiralling out of control it is apparent to some, including me, that the government has no answers and is reacting and not pro-acting.

I understand the need for the current lockdown and we all know that 2 weeks is just a start and it will be needed for a lot longer.

However the shutting on the mini marts and way side vendors leaves a lot of us bewildered as the logic behind it. In the area that I live R&R convenience, Mikes Mini Mart, EZ mini Mart and all the others are closed. These were locally owned shops where the poor, and not so poor, could get a little credit until the NIS cheque arrives, when the Post Office reopens, and walk a short distance home in the fresh air.

Now these people have to get an occasional bus to Massy in Oistins, and mix with those in the shop and be infected not only by the current shoppers but those who were there one or two hours ago. Are you telling us that it is safer for a person, who does not have a car, to catch a ZR and travel to Oistins to get a few items than to visit the corner shop?

The word that I have heard from more than one person is that in the last shut down the Major Supermarkets lost a lot of revenue because people switched to minimarts and a lot of way side vendors started. Is the way to make sure that the large foreign owned companies got more of the pie? It certainly seems so.

You have closed them on weekends so their overall sales will increase and their overheads will decrease. Bajans have been very good in following the new rules, and rightfully so, but there is a growing undercurrent of frustration and if the government is not careful there will be mass disobedience. This will hurt everyone. I hope that you can take a pause and consider the additional hardships you are causing a lot of Barbadians.

    These are not continuing effects, they are temporary. and everyone that is affect with covid does not have them.
    Stop TRYING to mislead the blog

    Unless u have been down that road u can’t speak with such know it all authority
    I know of people who had the virus for over a year still struggling with after effects
    Furthermore if govt had done diligence the people on the island would not have to face any before or after effects of the virus

    How about the failure to prosecute those whom she accused of bringing Barbados to the brink of economic meltdown through their alleged acts of corruption based on the evidence stored in her red portmanteau?

    But there must be at least one redeeming thing which your political nemesis has done to save Barbados from the snarling jaws of deadly Devaluation.

    According to Section 19 subparagraphs 1 part (a) and (b) and 2 of the Emergency Management (COVID-19) (No. 3) Order, 2020 S. I. 2020 No. 71 EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT (COVID-19) (CURFEW) (NO. 5) DIRECTIVE, 2021

    19 (1) No person shall transmit a video recording or an audio recording of any person or in any way make known to the public the identity of any person

    (a) who has been tested for Covid-19 or the result of any such test; or

    (b) who is in quarantine or in an isolation station.

    (2) It is a defence for the person who is charged with an offence under subparagraph (1) if he proves that he had obtained the prior consent of the person who is the subject of the act.

    So if you are going to identify anyone who has been tested, get their permission first.

    Certainly you are not depending on the two references above when there are far more current papers dealing with the emerging concern.

    The virus has been found in water.

    It can persist for up to 25 days last time I checked!!

    Samples of wastewater are collected from treatment plants and in the network, both in metropolitan and regional locations. These samples are analysed for fragments of coronavirus (COVID-19).
    If fragments of coronavirus (COVID-19) are detected in the wastewater of an area where there have not been recent positive cases, local communities can be more vigilant, increase clinical testing, and help health authorities to target public health advice to minimise transmission.

    Wastewater-based COVID-19 surveillance complements clinical testing and can provide an additional indicator to assess the spread of disease in a community

    JOINT NEWS RELEASE BETWEEN NEA, HTX AND PUB

    Singapore, 19 June 2020 – The National Environment Agency (NEA) has initiated a pilot surveillance programme to screen wastewater samples for SARS-CoV-2, the causative virus of COVID-19. The amount of viral material in wastewater from a community could reveal the level of COVID-19 spread in the community, and trigger the necessary response plans and mitigation actions, such as individual testing and isolation. Supported by National Water Agency PUB and Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX), the novel approach has complemented the Inter-Agency Task Force’s [1] efforts in assessing the situation and reducing the transmission of COVID-19 in the workers’ dormitories.

    Gleaning information from wastewater

    2 Wastewater surveillance is a promising method for assessing the COVID-19 situation, as infected individuals, including those with mild or no symptoms, could shed the virus in their stool. Since February 2020, scientists from NEA’s Environmental Health Institute (EHI), with scientific inputs from Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) and the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore-Massachusetts Institute of Technology Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) and the National University of Singapore, have developed a methodology for wastewater sampling and testing for COVID-19. With support from PUB and HTX, the team has been sampling wastewater from the Water Reclamation Plants (WRP) and workers’ dormitories. In the laboratory, a sensitive molecular assay is used to screen the samples and quantify the genetic material of the virus.

    3 Results from the testing of the wastewater from the WRPs showed that the level of COVID-19 viral ribonucleic acid (RNA) was not detected when there were 160 COVID-19 cases reported nation-wide as at 9 March 2020. However, the RNA levels became detectable in late March 2020, which correlated with the increase in cases detected in foreign workers’ dormitories. This demonstrated the usefulness of wastewater surveillance as a monitoring tool for SARS-CoV-2.

    4 “Several reports overseas have shown that wastewater testing at treatment plants could be useful for early detection of COVID-19 transmission in the community. However, at low level transmission, wastewater surveillance at the treatment plant appears to be less sensitive than clinical surveillance of cases in Singapore. This is likely due to our intensive clinical testing regime. Monitoring is ongoing to determine the trending of the concentration of viral material at the WRPs, and the relationship between the viral material concentration and prevalence of COVID-19 in Singapore”, explained Assoc. Prof Ng Lee Ching, Director of NEA’s Environmental Health Institute.

    5 Detection of viral material or RNA in the wastewater does not suggest the presence of viable or infectious virus. Without a host, the virus will not be able to propagate over time in wastewater. As an added preventive measure, wastewater from locations with COVID-19 cases, such as hospitals, isolation facilities and dormitories, are disinfected with chlorine at the premises before discharge into the public sewers. Disinfectants like chlorine can effectively inactivate the viruses.

    Wastewater testing to support dedicated efforts at workers’ dormitories

    6 Testing of wastewater to assess the situation of COVID-19 in a community or geographical population catchment is not new. However, NEA’s EHI has brought the science of wastewater testing further by using it to support the Inter-Agency Task Force’s dedicated effort in monitoring and management of COVID-19 transmission among workers in dormitories (refer to Annex A for pictures of lab and field work). The pilot programme involves monitoring wastewater in manholes of 20 large dormitories to provide an additional indicator that complements the clinical tests to assess the COVID-19 situation and guide the progressive clearance of the dormitories.

    7 For dormitories in the pilot programme with no detected COVID-19 cases, a zero reading for SARS-CoV-2 material in the wastewater provided the added assurance that the dormitories remain free from infection, and to allow the workers to leave the dormitories for work. On the other hand, viral material was detected in the wastewater of some dormitories, and this had prompted more swab tests for workers at these dormitories, leading to more detections and isolation of cases, including asymptomatic ones. This facilitated a more targeted swabbing strategy and contributed to the mitigation of further transmission.

    8 The trial results at the dormitories also show that the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 material in wastewater is related to the prevalence of COVID-19 in the dormitories. The team has thus far demonstrated the utility of wastewater testing as a warning system for the presence of the COVID-19 cases, and that the trending of SARS-CoV-2 concentration over time can determine if infection control measures taken have been effective. Wastewater samples can also capture information on a cross-section of the community, which allows for the monitoring of large groups. If positive signals are detected from wastewater at a particular site, clinical testing for COVID-19 can be carried out for the affected community, allowing screening for COVID-19 to be carried out in a more targeted manner. Although the approach has been useful in detecting COVID-19 cases, more research is needed to understand the sensitivity of the method in detecting early or a few number of cases.

    9 Despite its potential, the use of wastewater surveillance to detect COVID-19 spread is still in its early stages. NEA is working to ramp up its capacity to increase its coverage by expanding sampling to more wastewater nodes, which would improve the ability to pick up transmission. More information on the results of the wastewater surveillance in Singapore will be revealed when ready

    We need to lock down the desal plant pending an audit, preferably by experts from Singapore, Australia or New Zealand who practice the science of water treatment.

    Borehole testing around other public water supply wells is a good idea.

As you well know when we go to the doctor, they always ask for name, address, gender, family history, next of kin etc., so I expect that the government knows, assuming though that all patients always tell the whole truth.     Your reference were all about covid-19 in waste water. Then you make a big leap from waste water to a desalination plant.

    PleAse connect the two. I am doubtful that the desal plant output is wastewater. Nice sleight of hand, though.

    Grenada was also “catching” at the tourist dollars just like Barbados
    They had an out break in a sandals hotel before Xmas and shut down to contain it

    The shut down was before Xmas so the were lucky not to get the Xmas rush or they would have been in the same boat as Barbados

    But the the majority as u trying to make it out to be

    I know quite a few people that were affected by it and the only thing they had was a temporary list of smell
    Some other did even know they had it until they were tested and they recovered within having any symptoms

    I guess you had it so u can speak on authority

    Your reference were all about covid-19 in waste water. Then you make a big leap from waste water to a desalination plant.

    Wastewater emerges from septic tanks in the heavily populated area around the desal plant.

    Raw sewage emerges from houses with no septic tanks.

    Both permeate through the coral to the groundwater and seawater beneath the housing area.

    The groundwater, wastewater and raw sewage and sea water travel towards the pumps that feed the desal plant.

    The pumps take up all indiscriminately and send them to the desal plant for processing.

    The desal plant is not perfect, it has standards it is supposed to meet.

    It does not remove 100% of impurities, it isn’t designed to do that.

    It is designed to produce water that meets WHO standards.

    COVID is a new kid on the block.

    No big leap, just requires a little understanding!!

    If that were true why do Australia, New Zealand and Singapore test wastewater to determine if the virus is present and as a means to track down cases in the catchment area?

    The testing is usually for fragment of the virus. I believe when they say fragment, they are talking of dead virus fragments.

    I would suggest that you reread your 8:33 post.

    How does it spread from Bats to Humans?

    It is simpler to accept that it spreads from water to humans than Bats to Humans.

    Then again, bat droppings are in water!!!

    Bats abound in caves through which water that ultimately ends up in the public water supply.

    They test the water because infected persons shed fragments. It would alert them to the presence of the disease in the area

    You are moving the target around.

    Switching between waste water and desal water, possibility of infections by drinking water and detection of already existing cases by dead fragments in waste water.

    No ball.

    Wasn’t one of the early reason was because people were catching and keeping bats for food..

    I’ll give you another one to ponder.

    By placing the infected persons at Harrison’s point and Paragon the GOB takes the possibility of contamination of the water supply out of the equation …. once they caught it quick enough and once no one is present in the catchment area who is asymptomatic.

    My bet is the COVID buses are an attempt to accomplish the task which Australia, New Zealand and Singapore accomplish through their sewage monitoring.

    That’s why none have been up in St. Thomas as attested to by the resident expert on life expectancy.

    Now that was one extremely astute observation.
