This video raised its ugly rh head in Barbados last evening.

The more discerning among us are aware racism and bigotry are unwelcome human characteristics present everywhere humans exist. We accept human beings are imperfect creatures. However, it does not mean when these unsavoury qualities show its ugly head that civil society should not promote relevant policies and other measures as requires to nurture tolerance and educate fellow citizens in the interest of growing a wholesome society.

The mouthings from the person in the video is the result of many things which Barbadians have known and been tardy to addressing over the years. Crypto racism has been discussed often enough in this forum- for years. It must be addressed in a structured way. Spouting balderdash is easy for some but it will take much more to excoriate the scourge of racism and bigotry that has metastasize over centuries.

    On the boycott issue let me ask you one question. When the boycotted business sales suffer who getting laid off first, the white owners or the coloured workers?

    There is nothing crypto about Cliff’s racism. He is a racist@sshole. His racism is not hidden. It is open and it stinks.

    Charge him for driving without a seat belt.

    Charge him for using a cell phone while driving.

    Perhaps at the time they should have checked to see whether he could not also be charged 2ith driving while impaired with drugs and or alcohol.

    Do NOT do business with him or companies with which he is associated.

    There is no point with spending money with a man who clearly hols us black people in deep, deep contempt.

    As as for why we were brought from Africa?

    We were brought from Africa because people like Cloff were too damned lazy to work their own land, raise their own children and cook their own meals.

    We did not ask to come from Africa. We are quite ready and willing to return to Africa, but first pay us the 207 years worth of unpaid wages, then provide us with transportation back.

    Then people like Cliff can do their own farming in the 33 C degree heat and the near 100% humidity. We are cool with that.

    Is it possible that any statement from Nassco be accompanied with a generous donation to a local charity helping families in crisis during this pandemic?

    European Albinos who chose to settle in areas of the Earth between 40 degrees North and 40 degrees South; knew fully well that they would NOT be able to do the FARMWORK necessary to support themselves with FOOD in those areas due to the Damaging/Killing strength of the Sun’s UV radiation at those latitudes. So they resolved to use the Slave Labor of pigmented people as a means to supply themselves with enough Food to live in those Latitudes.
    After slavery , they got pigmented people to work their farms for slave wages.

    I do see John A point and even without seeing his post, would have come to the conclusion that I am about to state. I wanted to think a bit before posting, to ensure that I got my writing to where it should be.

    Punishing all of those with the name Corbin, based on the actions of one, is far from the tenets of justice. The response may be that there is a belief that his words have only been amplified from behind the walls of many living rooms and are common place. That also, being a strongly held, but nevertheless, unsubstantiated belief, is also against the norms of justice.

    Surely, many feel this way, and I too believe that some are thus guilty, but I definitely do not believe that all, or even the majority, are so. To apply that approach to all, is fundamentally wrong in principle.

    There will no doubt be many who support such an action, we can see it on social media. However, there will also be many who will interact with those businesses as they have been doing, judging the owners on their own merits. Maybe I am wrong.

    However, I would suggest, that before people use an umbrella approach, they consider carefully, the ramifications. Even moreso, for those who call for a boycott of all white and Indian businesses.

    What you are basically saying is that they are not Barbadian. That is the crux of it. In the world with a developed judicial and administrative system, matters of civil rights are dealt with by policy and the implementation and action of laws. Yes, those laws derive from norms, based both on the local experience but also on internationally recognised human rights.

    Public pressure can be used to force change. However, where that pressure may be seen to contravene internationally accepted human rights, you are moving into difficult territory.

    If, as the suggestion is, to boycott and really, if such were effective, destroy the business of anyone based on name, or worse, on race, you are effectively removing their livelihood and clearly indicating that they do not belong.

    The latter is what Idi Amin did in Uganda.

    I disagree with that approach, but, as I said above, I am only one person. If the majority feel this way, then my suggestion is that in such an approach, the government should give those persons a way out to start a new life elsewhere i.e. that their capital can be taken with them.

    Any other approach would be even more detrimental to the long term economic activity of the country.

    That is how I am thinking about it.

    On one point that John A raised. Based on name alone, I do perceive in a similar vein, some here would confirm their reverence for anyone named O’Neal, Barrow or Adams, or even, reverence for the anyone with the name of the businessman who reportedly paid civil servants salaries in various months when the government, under the DLP, had no cash.

    An approach in principle, should be applied in a consistent manner. When it is not, it is not an approach in principle. It is an ad hoc approach, based on subjective views.

    It may actually be the way forward, who knows, but at least admit that it is not an approach based on general principle.

    Finally, on the ramifications of a major policy, consider them carefully. No, one should not shy away from doing what is right, if again, in principle, it is right.

    But do consider the ramifications, especially considering the soundness of principle.

    PLT should understand my point very well.

But a direct and accepted national boycott of a select group, in any population, based on either a superficial connection as name, or a more profound basis such as ethnicity (the call above to boycott all white and Indian business) is surely an action that is outside of accepted norms. Especially the latter. That is the reality.

    One of the descriptions I often use to explain collective Barbadian behaviour, and for which I am bitterly criticised, is Bajan Condition. It is a set of predictable behaviours, of which that stubborn, rugged, individualism is at the core.
    Any call for Barbadians to maximise their collective consumer power will come up against a brick wall of stubborn individualism, summarised in the saying: you did not work for this money; or, you cannot tell me how to spend my money. That simplicity sums up a real cultural problem.
    The brutal reality is that the collective must at all times over-rule the individual; if there is a call for a national boycott of a service or business, individuals do not have the right of opting in or out. They MUST be in or suffer the consequences.
    Barbados is a little island and we all know where people live, their relatives, where they work and what they do in their spare time, even if this is in gated communities or exclusive clubs.
    And enforcing any call for a boycott will be a real challenge. Barbados is not unique; Northern Ireland, South Africa, the Middle East, are all geographical areas and nations that have had similar social problems and forms of resistance.
    We can all find reasons why not to comply with a collective decision, be it a strike at the place of work, or voting for a particular candidate, since superficially it seems to deny us our self-control. In fact, usually it is a short-term pain for long-term gain.
    Our collective consumer power is our last chance of preventing this island from being controlled by the New Barbadians, waiting in the background like hunters.
    As for white Barbadians, whose obnoxious behaviour is so outrageous that even their English kith and kin dissociate themselves from them, the reality is that traditional black and white Barbadians must reach a settlement.
    They may not become bosom pals, and have sleep-overs at each other’s homes, but they must reach a social compact, if not they will give away the nation by default.
    By the way, notice the silence of the politicians. First it was Black Lives Matter, than Nelson, now a semi-Fascist. This tells you all you want to know about our parliamentarians.

We are a country with 90% Blacks making up the population where 2% Whites plus other minorities control the economic power,wealth. The Clifford Corbin outburst represents a release for Black people to express themselves about this suppressed frustration. In much the same way the George Floyd incident sparked demonstrations about more than the incident itself.

    The African island Zanzibar purged their island of their Arab rulers by cunning, ruthlessness and brute force.

    I never suggested punishing people named Corbin. I never even suggested punishing the racist asshole Cliff Corbin himself… I understand that his upbringing within the Closed Brethren community has left him emotionally and mentally damaged, but his racism is beneath my contempt.

    What I did was to make a good faith effort to determine what commercial enterprises are associated with Cliff Corbin and his extended family so that I could spend my own money elsewhere unless those family businesses issued strong statements that condemned Cliff Corbin’s racism and anti Black racism in Barbados generally. So far, to my knowledge, Corbin’s Garage and Nassco have issued such statements.

    This is a good thing. What I am trying to provoke is that whenever some White supremacist asshole makes racist comments in public, the entire Bajan White business community trips over themselves in issuing statements condemning such racism. I am not naïve, I know that such statements may be prompted more by fear of economic repercussions than by heartfelt revulsion against anti Black racism, but it is a start. I am perfectly willing to use their fear of economic retaliation to prompt them into doing what they should do out of simple human decency.

    If family businesses fail to issue strong statements condemning racism then I will personally boycott such businesses and make my feelings known to the public as well as to the family business. After all, we know full well that racism is born and nurtured within a person’s family upbringing. It is my own choice where I spend my money and I choose to direct my money away from racists.

    So while I understand you point very well, you are dead wrong.

    Why is that? Because the Barbadian welfare state dumbs down the black masses and robs them through high taxes. Blacks in Barbados are conditioned to think they don’t have to work hard as entrepreneurs because they can sleep in the civil service for forty years until they retire. Likewise, it is a fact that the civil service sabotages every black business through high taxes and regulations.

    We need a second emancipation. Break the chains of the welfare state and free the masses from their mental captivity.

    Well said, Comrade. We had a white attorney skin his bare ass at a black female magistrate; we had a white attorney physically abuse a black man and called him a nigger; the COW Williams wife garbage incident and now this white man racist incident.
    In every single case before this nothing happened. Not one single black politician picked his teeth.
    We know how other minorities treat their employees and call them all types of derogatory names. In our culture we always find those who defend the whites and other minorities. Just give them a loan , a bunch of keys, a title or good deal on an old second hand car.
    There is a highly sophisticated white policy of divide and rule that we fall for all the time. And then we start to eat each other with the latest nonsense that blacks don’t support blacks when in fact what we need to say is that whites and other minorities don’t support black businesses but hourly undermine them.
    I don’t know a single black shopkeeper whose business depended on whites and other minorities; a single black mechanic or body work shop; a single high school owned by blacks.
    We have always supported each other. I don’t know how many whites and Indians were ever seen in Gertz supermarket.
    I could on. Stop this crap that blacks don’t support each other. The message needs to be : They don’t support us and it’s about time that we stop supporting them.
    The bottom line is that we can survive without them but they don’t stand a chance without our support. In other words we are stronger. It makes no sense preaching a negative message that we don’t support each other. That is defeatist. Simple : if we boycott buying cars all the dealerships will close in two months or less.

    Special Envoy for Reparations and Economic Enfranchisement Trevor Prescod is calling on Barbadians to boycott any business owned by or affiliated with a white man captured on video referring to black Barbadians by the N-word and saying they “don’t know how to act”.
    Yesterday an incensed Prescod, a long-standing Pan-Africanist, told the Weekend Nation
    that any white person who had the gall to make such derogatory remarks about people of African descent in a predominantly black country must be dealt with in the strictest possible way.
    Blacklist
    Prominent businessman Ralph “Bizzy” Williams also condemned the behaviour, vowing to blacklist the company of the man in the video which has gone viral, even though he was confident that no such business ties now existed.
    “It is reprehensible and I was shocked when I saw it. I couldn’t believe that a man could be [so stupid] to be living in a country with 96 per cent black people and make that kind of comment. This man is seriously lacking in common sense and integrity,” said Williams, who heads the Williams Industries group of companies.
    Barbados’ Ambassador to CARICOM David Comissiong, also a Pan-Africanist, said it was evidence that racial issues in Barbados had not been resolved.
    “I cannot understand how a man of his pigmentation can say that in a majority black population and then expect black people to continue to patronise any business that he has.
    “I cannot believe that our people would give that man or any business he is associated with any kind of support as customers. I cannot believe that such a thing would happen,” said Prescod, who also called on the man to apologise to the entire country.
    “I am begging the Barbadian public, for the sake of this generation and the next and out of respect for what our ancestors have already gone through, that we put a stop to this foolishness now. He should never be supported by a cent coming from any black person.” He added: “People this morning are upset and I cannot begin to tell you the amount of calls I got through the night, even from overseas. I am going to request that the . .
    . Pan-Africanist think tank conduct a series of educational programmes so that we can create a society with greater harmony than the one we live in now. This gentleman deserves to be punished; I am not talking about physically but in terms of our patronage.”
    In the expletiveladen rant, which was apparently captured by a front seat passenger of the truck driven by the man in question, he said: “Tricks and lies and b*** sh** every week, wunnah ****ing [N-word].
    Everybody acting the same way, dishonest.
    This somewhere to live in a country? Where the **** ’bout here to live?
    Wunnah don’t know how to act or how to behave.
    [Why the] **** people bring wunnah from Africa to do?”
    Prescod said this behaviour justified the need for a department within Government to deal with race relations.
    He charged that this was not an isolated incident but rather an overt example of a mindset among some that had been bubbling under the surface for some time and needed to be confronted headon.
    He said now was not the time for the Caucasian members of the Barbadian society to sit on the fence but come out in strong condemnation of this behaviour.
    Government unit
    “It justifies why we need to have a unit within Government to address these injustices, to address this social imbalance and make the call for reparations from all those who have inflicted criminal harm on us.
    “It is clear now that those persons still exist in our society today. If there are other persons of his social type, who know that they are not that way, they need to come out now and speak for themselves. “I am not going to remain silent on these issues as a Pan-Africanist, as a Member of Parliament and as the head of the Reparations Unit,” he said. Comissiong said Barbados could no longer afford to bury its head in the sand when it came to race relations in the country. “I have always said that we have an unresolved issue of racism here in Barbados. It is obviously a hangover from our colonial past. We have made some progress, but it still very much exists.
    So you still have white Barbadians who have those kinds of ideas about black people in their heads; that is just the reality. It is an issue that we need to face up to as a society.” However, he noted there was the flip side to it. “We still have some black Barbadians who harbour false notions of black inferiority and white superiority. So these hangovers from our colonial past need to be addressed. Many Barbadians fall into the trap of denying that this reality exists, but there is nothing to be gained by doing like the ostrich and hiding your head in the sand,” he said.
    Meanwhile, Williams said while he concurred that a deeper discussion on race was necessary, a strong message needed to be sent now to preserve racial harmony. “This has the potential to strain relations and these are the types of comments that can only lead to animosity between black and white people.
    This racial animosity is as deep as the deepest ocean. I wish it would go away, but I can’t make it go away,” he said.

    You are contradicting yourself. The statement by the family is not an apology, it is simply distancing themselves from his foul behaviour.
    More important, such a statement doe not compromise the need for consumer power; this is not personal. Back Barbadian must recapture their power as consumers, regardless of the behaviour of whites, Lebanese, Asians or the man from Del Marte.
    This is an economic necessity regardless. We have lost business control, our political power has been compromised by unscrupulous black politicians, and now we are giving away out only remaining collective strength, our consumer power.
    @PLT you must decide whose side you are on.

    Thanks. Our consumer power must go beyond shops to include services. Any lawyer who depends on black people for business should be boycotted if s/he behaves badly; any doctor who depends on black patients who behaves badly should also be boycotted; any airline where staff behave badly should be boycotted..
    No-one is too big or important not to be boycotted. That is our consumer power. There will be some pain: people may lose jobs, bills may go unpaid, etc, but that is short term. We will emerge as a stronger, more disciplined and principled people. The birth of a New Barbados.
    The Pan-African movement must not only protest, they must organise; what Corbin has said, which has become public, is no doubt normal language in private. This is our Black Lives Matter moment.
    Many white Barbadians believe their main link to whites in Europe and North America is their disparaging view of black people, and to a certain extent they are right.
    If we try to marginalise them their kith and kin in the US, Canada and UK will send in their gun boats. Be prepared for that.

    Talking about money, GOB benefits most from the importation of cars, it gets 100% duty last time I checked.

    It gets tax on every gallon of gas or diesel sold.

    It should be rolling in money with which it can pay for health services, education, road maintenance, etc. etc. etc.

    … also Operation “Seek and Serve”, $37 million, that’s going to take a lot of cars!!.

    It might not like seeing its revenue eviscerated from this risk free enterprise at this point in time!!

    Me, I would love to see the number of cars … and trucks … on the road dwindle, traffic is a bitch.

    I guess the PLT’s program to attract his beloved white people to the island will replace the loss in revenue!!

    I am not contradicting myself because I do not give a damn about an apology from Cliff Corbin or anyone else. My feelings are not hurt. I am simply exploiting this incident to force White Bajans to look in the mirror.

    I care only about full throated condemnations of White supremacist racism. I want those condemnations to come from every sector of the White Bajan business class, and if I don’t hear such condemnations I will use the power of boycott.

    I want the condemnations to ring loud and clear whether it is White supremacist ‘black sheep’ Cliff Corbin, racist goat farmer Richard Had, or spoiled rotten British socialite Mrs Cow Williams.

    We have a long way yet to go, but a decade ago no White Bajan public voice would have been heard in condemnation of Cliff Corbin’s rant; so this is progress, albeit sloooow.
