This video raised its ugly rh head in Barbados last evening.

The more discerning among us are aware racism and bigotry are unwelcome human characteristics present everywhere humans exist. We accept human beings are imperfect creatures. However, it does not mean when these unsavoury qualities show its ugly head that civil society should not promote relevant policies and other measures as requires to nurture tolerance and educate fellow citizens in the interest of growing a wholesome society.

The mouthings from the person in the video is the result of many things which Barbadians have known and been tardy to addressing over the years. Crypto racism has been discussed often enough in this forum- for years. It must be addressed in a structured way. Spouting balderdash is easy for some but it will take much more to excoriate the scourge of racism and bigotry that has metastasize over centuries.

    No, the issue is bigger than Clifford Corbin. What he shouted in the privacy of his truck exposed what we have euphemistically labeled crypto racism over the years. Whites and other minorities have been happy to float under the radar all the while counting their pennies. They have done little to promote racial reconciliation in a material way. Is this the tipping point?

    Dullard and Hal I agree with you both…. Dullard you are right PTL does not owe anyone how he spends his canadian pension. Nobody has to explain their choices or reasons how they spend their money white or black.
    Hal you are right PTL gleefully with his canadian pension sowed the wind which he is stepping back from now as you have observed so you are right in asking what side is he on.
    Now from my perspective I cant play with other peoples jobs I have a canadian pension that comes in like clockwork and would not feel right in over the top agitating ( calling the businesses ,tracking family) that may cause others that dont have a canadian pension to maybe lose their jobs.I would let someone that has a dog in the fight do that.
    Now I didnt have a Kanadian Karen take my job and steal my idea, or the govt of the country I love steal my passport idea, but maybe when you have an idea ( boycotting corbins ) you shouldnt shrink from it as Hal has noted.

    You’ll be interested to know that I enjoy educating the Welcome Stampers about racism in Barbados and I find that they are as horrified as I am at the White supremacist attitudes of some Bajans like yourself.

    I am humbled and proud to be lucky enough to have sparked hundreds of millions of USD in economic activity in Barbados in these dire times. You and your relations appear to me to have contributed zero to Barbados in the past 60 years beyond enriching a plethora of lawyers, foreign and domestic.

    Certain things trigger emotions and past abuse and hurt held deep inside that are assimilated and buried and lead to a cathartic release of everything at once in whole books of text. We know Waru has a short fuse while others are on a slow burn to address and let their feelings be known. But, Barbados has a lower class majority of poor black people and a small minority of rich white people living in luxury where wealth inequality is even greater than other countries in the West. This is a ticking time bomb that can blow up in a Burkino Faso / Sharpeville stylee and takeover the land in a couple of days weeks months or years. Easy Squeeze make no riot means screw the people slowly so they don’t fight back.

    On page 3 of today’s Nation Trevor Prescod is quoted as saying “this gentleman deserves to be punished. I am not talking about physically, but in terms of our patronage.”

    My question: Why is a dirty mouthed racist white MAN referred to as a gentleman, when he is clearly not a gentleman?

    If a black woman like me behaved like that would any black Bajan man refer to me as a lady?

    When will be get this obsession out of our heads of referring to white MEN and WOMEN as ladies and gentlemen even when they behave in the most obscene racist way? When there is NOTHING ladylike nor gentleman like about them or their bad behavior?

    I’m assuming your above comment means ‘Black shopkeepers’ do not depend on the patronage of “whites and other minorities” for the survival of their businesses.

    If my assumption is correct, then, although your comment is true from that perspective, you’re not entirely accurate.

    To sell food, beverage, hardware and other items, that ‘single Black shopkeeper’ must buy STOCK. Although there are several Black ‘middlemen’ from whom shopkeepers can purchase stock, the wholesale industry is ultimately controlled by white people.

    Let me give you an example. I’m aware you’re a proponent of ‘supporting local’ and would often joke about ‘drinking a rum,’ rather than imported liquor, such as scotch, gin, brandy etc. With the exception of Mount Gay, which is French owned, the rum industry is owned/controlled by white people. ESAF, Old Brigand (the popular brands in local shops) are owned and distributed by David Seale. Hanschell Inniss Ltd., which is owned by the Goddards produces and distributes Cockspur rum.

    The Indians have now gone into the wholesale sector as ‘middlemen’ and provide merchandise to the owners of many local shops, bars and stalls on credit terms the owners cannot survive without.

    So, when you go into a local shop and call for a Banks beer or ESAF and water, the owner probably purchased that stock from an Indian who will collect ‘a little something from him when the week come’ and restock him when necessary, especially if he is a ‘good paymaster.’

    This is the reality of the situation.

    I thank the racist scumbag Cliff Corbin for his comments. He has started the conversation that Barbadians have needed for a long time.

    He has done for Barbados what Donald Trump has done for America. He has laid it all out there on video! Out of the shadows and into the light! The white shadows now have a face!

    Where did he learn to think and speak like that? Where do most people learn to think and speak like that? He is obviously used to speaking like that in his community. He has obviously not been taken to task by his community. His great anger obviously did away with his self-control and he spoke as he is accustomed to speaking in the COMFORT of his community!

    Come on, Bajan whites! Tell us there is no racism in Barbados! Tell us it is all in our minds! Tell us that we need to stop seeing things in black and white!

    A much needed slap in the face to black Bajans to wake us up and hopefully get us moving!

    If Pressie thinks that it is only “Bajan whites” who think that way about blacks then he has to be deeply myopic.

    He only has to turn to other countries with relatively large populations of Asian origins like T&T and Guyana and he would see how blacks are viewed and treated by other ethnic groups of non-European extraction who have their own moral guide books and their own pantheon of gods and devils like Hal Austin’s favourite bugbear Dr. Kumar Mahabir.

    The fault, therefore, must reside within the black race.

    They must take a long hard look into their ebony mirror and see what image is clearly missing before they can even think about emancipating themselves from the current state of economic dependency on other races for their day-to-day survival.

    Black people must first free themselves from the current shackles of mental slavery and see themselves as diamonds hiding among God’s creation.

    Yes, the same God who gave them their black skin and eyes to see the path that leads to the Light of monotheism.

    African religion tapped into spiritual forces within and around the universe the sun the moon and all creation in mother nature with love for all. They paid worship and tribute in prayer to their ancestors sages and heroes who have passed on. This is also what praying to Jesus in Christianity is all about. Same goes will all the other prophets and demigods in all religions (who all worship the same one good)

    In Barbados, it has always been the merchants who did well.

    There is a simple reason.

    Merchants deal with a multiplicity of lines.

    One may be losing while others are producing profits.

    Their decisions are economic, not simply based on financial considerations.

    It might make sense to continue with a loss leader because it provides the avenue for lines which are profitable to gain entry into a market.

    They have networks with other merchants worldwide and naturally attract and give credit.

    Without it, goods don’t move.

    That was one of the reasons Quakers were so successful in business.

    CREDIT!!

    They trusted each other!!

    We can see from this conversation why Barbados is going nowhere!!

    But, do you know there was a time (and I believe it still happens), when white people preferred to give a Black man honorary titles, such as Doctor, Professor, Reverend or any similar title, so as to avoid calling him Mister……. especially when they were in the presence of other white people?

    We need to go beyond that. Once we stop supporting them, they can’t place no more orders for anything. It means that we will now have to be dealt with at all levels.
    There is no one solution to anything . We need to stop this and look at the bigger picture.
    A simple fact of life : You are never better than a man until you beat him at his own game.
    We can only become the major importers if we stop looking at all that can go wrong in the struggle for economic dominance.
    We win with numbers. If we stop buying cars tomorrow , within two months every dealership shut down. We then open dealerships. We then open parts departments. If they want cars they buy from us. That’s the way forward.
    Same with whiskey ,, brandy and whatever comes through the port.
    The reason I was reluctant to join this conversation is the fact that we have been here before and within three weeks it’s back to the status quo.
    We are like baby elephants that were tied to a rope from birth. They became huge but still felt they could not break that rope. They fired in old age strong but never free. Never understanding their strength. Until we understand our strengths we will big only in stature but weak ever believing the old weak rope can never be broken.
    BTW, I actually drink rum because I honestly think that it’s the best product. And it’s not only Bajan rum. El Dorado from Guyana is equal to our Mount Gay. I can’t understand why we only produce rum and not the other drinks.
    But believe me, there are some rums, none produced locally, that I would not even think of drinking. Rum remains our finest product right up there with Shirley biscuits.

    Our BU commentators obviously don’t live on the island’s heights or near the golf courses.

    Otherwise they would know that even in Barbados only money counts. I have yet to hear of white and black businessmen or politicians fighting each other on the heights. Instead, everyone there agrees that poverty is a contagious disease and you have to keep the common people, black or white, at a distance.

    Let me say up front I do not support the boycott of any companies based on a surname. God help if that happened and the man’s name was Smith, Barbados would shut down! Secondly the extended family of this idiot is not responsible for his rantings.

    Now I do however support a boycott of this guy’s business. I believe a targeted boycott of him is what we all should do. We first need to identify what businesses he personally has and deal with him to suit.

    I still however want to see the police involved because as i said before a person with his rage driving a truck is a dangerous thing. We need to use the full extent of the law to deal with if he left the scene of an accident, as well as an evaluation of his mental state. There is no excuse for the authorities not to bring him in and have this done. We regularly hear that some one was arrested and sent for evaluation, he should be no different. He clearly has issues as the video shows and as long as he is out there on the road he is a threat to others.

    Now in my opinion there was no need for Corbins Garage or anybody named Corbin to issue any statement distancing themselves from this idiot. All that does is give the idiot recognition. If Ninja Man’s name was Jones and he cursed some white people, should every Jones in the island now formally state in the paper that they are not associated with Ninja Man? Never fan the flames of radical behaviour by giving it recognition.

    In closing i would ask this question. If in 1940 people ignored the racist rants of a German soldier named Adolf Hitler, do you think 11 millions Jews would of died at his hands? If he was targeted then and fired and disgraced by the German people, do you think thousands of soldiers would of died in Europe of all races ?

    Never fan the flames of radicalism or give it recognition. Instead target the perpetrator and nip it in the bud, that is what I have from the beginning of this article been calling for. Let us insist the police do their job and have him charged for what ever crimes were committed and then fully evaluated before he is given those truck keys again.

    I can say it no clearer than this and I trust that everyone understands clearly my intent, including those who have attempted to twist my words for their personal agenda.

    A boycott based on a surname is silly. Equally, a boycott of a rogue businessman will simply be making a point. I am talking about mobilising the power of the Barbadian consumer, which is something totally different.
    As to the involvement of the police, that it different. If he has broken any hate crime or race r elations legislation, then he should be prosecuted. But I do not expect this is a road the Mottley government would like to go down.
    Otherwise a lot of what is being said around the issue is hot air, Bajan style.

    It is NOT the responsibility of the police to “have evaluated” those who have left the scene of an accident.

    It is the responsibility of the police to CHARGE such people with leaving the scene of an accident.

    If the person or their family or their lawyer feels that that person is in need of medical treatment, then it is the RESPONSIBILITY of the person, their family or their lawyer to seek out such treatment.

    I’ve tried to explain all this to you before, but I don’t mind trying again…
    I count wealth in what I contribute to my fellow human beings, not what I accumulate for myself. Furthermore, the prime responsibility of leadership is to train (yes train) the next generation of leaders. So I trained and promoted a talented Canadian woman to lead a nonprofit Canadian organisation; I’m proud of that.

    The Barbados Government did not steal my idea for a remote work visa simply because I gave the idea to the Barbadian people and their representatives as a gift. Only a fool would accuse someone of the theft of something that they were given as a gift.

    P.S. I do not draw a Canadian pension for the simple reason that I am not yet 65 years old. When I do draw my pension, which I earned by the sweat of my brow, it will simply give me a little more capacity to contribute to the well being of my fellow human beings and feel all the wealthier for such an opportunity..

    That is consumer power; the Church of England is now carrying out an inquiry. Not a single apologist excusing his behaviour or even trying to save his job.

    I have NEVER heard of the police sending any black person who leaves the scene of an accident for a psychiatric evaluation.

    The young man is from an apparently wealthy family. If he is mentally ill why have they not sought out psychiatric help for him? Why has he himself not sought it out? After all tax funded psychiatrists are readily available for “free” at the psychiatric hospital; and psychiatrists in private practice are readily available for $100 BDS per session.

    We lay people should not seek to make psychiatric diagnoses only AFTER a person behaves badly.

    I am supporting you. If he committed a hit and run offence, and the victim hs complained, then he should be arrested. But it is only an offence if there is a victim.
    Also, with his racist rant, it is only an offence if there is legislation prohibiting such behaviour. Here is a chance for the attorney general and commissioner of police to do their jobs.
    Caveats, excuses, explanations, etc are all very Bajan. I have a name for such predictable behaviour. We are the only people with such consumer power who find all kinds of ways of not using that power and influence. Strange people.

    You are wrong. Not only is there a need for Corbin’s Garage, Nassco, Corbin’s Catering, and Bizzy to issue statements condemning White supremacist racism; there is a need for every White owned business in Barbados to issue similar statements. The issue is not Cliff Corbin, the issue is the White supremacist racism that still disfigures Bajan society 187 years after the abolition of slavery here.

    White supremacist racism is the ugliest aspect of Bajan culture and it is the responsibility of those whose ancestors benefited from it and who continue to benefit from it to take responsibility for eradicating it. White supremacist racism in Barbados is not my problem. it is 100% the problem of White Bajans. They need to open their eyes, own up to it, look into the mirror that is Cliff Corbin, and purge this evil from their families, their community, and from their own minds.

    Actually that is a good point I don’t know if we have such legislation on the books here but it is indeed an opportunity for the AG to look into drafting some. Statements and outburst like that based on any race against another should not go unchecked in 2021. I guess if he typed that statement and emailed it then he could be charged under the computer misuse act. We will see if it is all talk going forward and what the system will do.

    If nothing happens then we know it’s all hot air as usual

    Sorry, we both followed different entirely different paths in our lives which happened to converge for a brief moment in time at HC.

    Don’t blame the wonderful world of HC.

    I enjoyed HC because I never got involved in the elites there, just did my work, kept my nose clean and took each day as it came, like I was brought up to do.

    I respect your opinion but beg to differ on it. This guy needs to be dealt with and in so doing send a message to all racists regardless of skin colour that Barbados in 2021 will not tolerate this nonesence!
