Today the electorate of St. George North will vote for a member of parliament to fill the vacancy created by the ‘retirement’ of Gline Clarke. The blogmaster’s assessment is that it will be a straight contest between Floyd Reifer (DLP) and Toni Moore (BLP). Of the so-called third parties Grenville Phillips should retain third option in the number count. We can debate if Barbadians are ready for a third party or is this a case of the quality of the options presented. The blogmaster respectfully suggest the latter.

The result of the election will answer a few questions for political pundits.

  • Has the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) regain its standing as the credible alternative in the eyes of voters?
  • Despite managing the affairs of state in the most challenging period post independence, will the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) be able to convince the SGN electorate that it is the most competent to govern at this time?
  • Will Grenville Phillips increase his penetration of support in the constituency to forge the way for third parties in the future?
  • How large will the protest vote be which has been fomenting in a climate of austerity for the last 3 years?
  • Has the last 90 days of campaigning confirm the urgent need for electoral reform in Barbados?

So far by-election activities has been largely peaceful in keeping with Bajan tradition. Let us continue to make the country proud by delivering an uneventful event. The blogmaster’s vote will be cast for David Walrond, the agriculturist and community practitioner.

    To be honest the jury is out on what people want. Do they know what they want? Don’t politicians pander to the demands of constituents or is it that politicians are able to manipulate the wishes/wants of people. This seems to be a global happening where democracies are being hijacked by an elite few.

    You are right. The author has a problem. I first became aware of him a few years ago when he launched an attack on me. Until then I did not notice him.
    Usually when people make such attacks they have a motive. I suspect I know what his is. He also says things then denies them. He once called me financial adviser, when I pointed out it was illegal in the UK to call yourself a financial adviser unless regulated he went off saying that what he meant was that insurance salesmen/agents in Barbados usually call themselves financial advisers and he thought that was what I was doing.
    I have never called myself a financial adviser, never aspired to be one, nor have I ever had anything to do with insurance in Barbados. How he connected me with the two is beyond me. But he still tries to ‘explain’ this nonsense. Then he said move on, he does not like to be reminded of his fabrications. He is sad.
    But, as you know, schizophrenic bullies must have victims and he sees @Mariposa as his victim. If not he goes off and tries to be nice. Sadly the chairman encourages it and even joins in.
    Have you seen the latest attack, that I read books and try to pass the ideas off as my own. Have you ever seen any such nonsense? I get ideas from books, magazines, journals, newspapers, radio, television, I am a member of a couple online societies, I regularly visit the web pages of professional organisations and I talk to people, including friends and family.
    All those are the sources of my knowledge and when the ideas are not original I source them, from Plato to Joe Blogs. I am used to the Bajan Condition and know it is in need of treatment. Ask Avinash Persaud’s brother, he is a psychiatrist.

    The first important piece of information coming from Baje is that he (generic) is a citizen of the USA. Consequently, regardless of where he lives and works, he has to report his worldwide income to the IRS in the USA.

    Baje said that he has a business. Assume that he is the sole business owner and lives in Australia.

    Salary (excluding Baje) 300,000
    Salary (Baje) 60,000
    Profit before taxes 45,570
    Taxes (21%) 9,570

    Baje’s salary of $60,000 in 2019 makes him eligible to receive the $1,200 stimulus payment offered by the government of the USA. He views his total annual earnings as $96,000 (Salary + profit). As head of a household, he could have paid himself a salary of $96,000 and still receive the stimulus check.

    You now have an excellent opportunity to let Baje know that you did not fully understand, or think through, what he was saying.
    Barbadians need to start treating each other routinely with dignity and respect.
