Today the electorate of St. George North will vote for a member of parliament to fill the vacancy created by the ‘retirement’ of Gline Clarke. The blogmaster’s assessment is that it will be a straight contest between Floyd Reifer (DLP) and Toni Moore (BLP). Of the so-called third parties Grenville Phillips should retain third option in the number count. We can debate if Barbadians are ready for a third party or is this a case of the quality of the options presented. The blogmaster respectfully suggest the latter.

The result of the election will answer a few questions for political pundits.

  • Has the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) regain its standing as the credible alternative in the eyes of voters?
  • Despite managing the affairs of state in the most challenging period post independence, will the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) be able to convince the SGN electorate that it is the most competent to govern at this time?
  • Will Grenville Phillips increase his penetration of support in the constituency to forge the way for third parties in the future?
  • How large will the protest vote be which has been fomenting in a climate of austerity for the last 3 years?
  • Has the last 90 days of campaigning confirm the urgent need for electoral reform in Barbados?

So far by-election activities has been largely peaceful in keeping with Bajan tradition. Let us continue to make the country proud by delivering an uneventful event. The blogmaster’s vote will be cast for David Walrond, the agriculturist and community practitioner.

  1. Results for the three early boxes Moore will wash off the others. However according to Wickham he is reporting there is a 10% plus swing against government. There is also a low turnout reported.

    Third parties a no show.

  2. Anderson Morrison, Edgar Bourne. Just got the Christian names. Also rather than two Lloyd Brathwaites. One was Roy who represented St. Lucy.

    Peace.

  3. Hello🤭🤣🤣🤣

  4. @enuff

    Explain the low turnout.

  5. moore winning in a landslide

    Moore 3154 reifer 1327

  6. The BLP can continue on the road to where they intend to take Barbados.

Reifer got lucky. He can now focus on 2023.

  7. Thank hants.

  8. I said from the outset that it was the BLP’s constituency to lose and it lived up to my expectation, would someone tell the PM the election is over and her Party won.

  9. Most disappointing the Pdp result. One should question if it is about the quality of candidate or the inability of the party to take deep root.

  10. What is the final votes for all parties?

  11. David
Explain what? Covid, by election, fait accompli.

  12. Pdp

Is the newest of all the parties

  13. @enuff

Not buying that covid is to blame for low turnout. The SGN by election did not generate interest outside the constituency.

  14. Now that the election is over my mind focus on what political pundits have been saying for the past two and half years talk of fresh blood and integrity for the people along with political campaign strategy absent of smut but talk of issues
    Well they were wrong
    More on that tommorow

  15. Continue with your head in the sand BS and be guaranteed it will be the same result next time around.

  16. Hartley Henry made a good point about the DLP/ candidate not even appearing publicly to thank its supporters for supporting the candidate.

    Wuh happen to Atherley’s candidate?

  17. Congratulations and Thank you.

Congratulations to Toni Moore who has been confirmed to be the St George North representative. Congratulations must also go to Floyd Reifer, who came in a commendable second.

I thank all of my fellow candidates for running a relatively clean campaign. It is extremely important that we keep the families of our competitors out of our political campaigns. Thank you to the media, for providing generally fair coverage of each candidate’s message, including ours.

I thank my family who have tolerated my political activities over the past five years. There is great jubilation among my family at this time, as my time in elective politics has now come to an end. There is rejoicing among my clients for the same reason.

I thank all Solutions Barbados Candidates for their support over the past five years. I also thank those who voted for me in this by-election.

Finally, but most importantly, I thank God. Like all Solutions Barbados Candidates, I believe that our entry into politics was a calling, to which we responded.

It was important that voters be given a competent alternative, which we provided them. We respect the voters decision.

    Grenville Phillips II
Solutions Barbados’ candidate for St George North.

  18. Congratulate Ms.Moore and the BLP. The DLP needs to realise that it did not persuade people to vote. Mr. Reifer fell very short of expectations.
All the third parties need to work harder: build constituency branches; continue to work in the communities; get candidates in place.
    Peace

The low voter turnout would be the story of this by-election but it is in-keeping with Caribbean Elections post the onset of Covid-19. The economic fallout due to the necessary response to Covid-19 has sapped the energy out of everything in Barbados. . A voter who lost their job or had their financial circumstance in the home affected in these times would not be as motivate to vote. I would argue that if that voter blame their circumstance on poor govt economics they probably would have gone out to make their vote count. As a resident of the constituency i can tell you that the general energy this time was the lowest out of the elections I have been a part of in St. George North.

There was a swing towards the DLP but that isn’t necessarily a surprise as incumbent govts loose support overtime…..added to the fact that the consensus is that Reifer was a “better candidate” than the Jester….

It is my opinion that the 3rd parties must form a coalition or they will just be wasting time and energy. The time is right when one of the major parties is at their lowest ebb to gain some traction. These parties must coalesce around a VIABLE leader and go forward.

    TONI MOORE

is trying to prove the HOLY BIBLE WRONG:

“No man ( OR WOMAN) can serve two masters: for either he. will hate the one, and love the other; or else. he will hold to the one, and despise the other, Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”

She can not serve the workers and the BARBADOS LABOUR PARTY too.

    THE WORKERS WILL SOON SEE!!!!!!!!

The best candidate has not won.

    Just as was predicted.

The people of SGN have shown that they are happy about not having a real representative in the House Of Assembly. Someone who can help them.

I hope that you will keep your promise and NEVER CONTEST ANOTHER ELECTION AGAIN!

    Swear !

  23. If you keep a people intellectually backward, that’s what you get….backward voters…they have been getting the same lies repeatedly for decades, so they much prefer go with the LIARS THAT THEY KNOW, nothing to be proud about, but lowlifes will celebrate keeping their people socially and financially stagnated.

  24. I think Grenville overplayed his hand with the bit about helping the people get their personal injury cases resolved and paid their compensation…that one was really taking the deceit overboard, i myself wondered which company he was referring to and going to get to pay Black people their personal injury compensation…was it CGI, ICBL, which one??? even the simpliest people in St. George would know that’s an OUTRIGHT LIE…too boldfaced to vote for……😂🤣

and that’s one of the many reasons i will never support a politician unless they PROVE they are not just telling another lie and making another false promise, just to be elected.

  27. We must congratulate Toni Moore for her victory in St George North. However, in any post-election analysis we must also consider that the people of the constituency failed to put the brakes on the worst le, most incompetent post-independence government we have had.
I saw one discussion on CBC last night in which someone who was described as a strategist admonishing the DLP candidate for concentrating on local issues (it was a by-election) instead of national issues.
Part of his argument was that it was a long campaign and there was so much voters would want to hear about clearing bush and other such issues of concern to locals.
He also congratulated the DLP leader for getting a Reifer on her ticket on the basic the family had tremendous human capital in the district.
It was political nonsense, not only because it was contradictory, but because it misread the purpose of politics. On the one hand he was saying the by-election should be conducted on national issues, while on the other he was talking about the capital the Reifer family had in the area. Which one was it?
The strategist also said the by-election should have been a mid-term referendum on the ruling party. There is some merit in this argument, but more fundamentally the campaign should have been about how government policy impacted on the constituency.
So, it was not the localised issues, but putting those national issues in a proper localised context that might have failed to win hearts and votes.
However, congratulations to Toni Moore. As to Junior’s promise to leave active politics, I do not give advice, but will suggest to him that he should turn Solutions Barbados in to a think-tank, publishing occasional policy documents across a wide range of topics.
Historically that will be a greater contribution to the development of Barbados than a school for builders or even contesting general elections.
Barbadians are obsessed with politics and try to politicise every experience. Someone must break the habit.

  28. Well well who laughing now about not debating now Mariposa? For sure it is not the political nightwatchman nor Mr Reifer. You all dig up all the red herrings you could about pedigree, exploiting children, bush everything you all could and as the one in the UK states it all ended in tears.I noticed the Franklyn ass licker eased back on here talking about Mr Phillips but not a word about the PDP candidate who did not even get a hundred votes.I wonder if the mad man still thinks Rev Atherley, s party got any chance of winning in 2023? The people i beleive just waiting on Atherley and his side kick Mr Franklyn.Congratulations to Mrs Tonl Moore on her victory and going forward we will see how well she does.Austin last night asked where was the President? After the results i heard Ms Mottley whre was Ms Depeiza and Mr Reifer? Instead we had Ms McClean on radio trying to spin events but she was closed down by Mr Wickham and Ms Thompson. Lastly i heard Dr Hinds seeming to be bigging up Mr Reifer before the results and seemed very downbeat last night.Maybe she is another Ms Holder in the making at VOB.I will be listening to her carefully going forward as the jury is out on her for now.Advice to the Dems look for a leader.

  29. Room must be made for the dissenting voice in a democracy.

  30. Not buying that covid is to blame for low turnout. The SGN by election did not generate interest outside the constituency….(Quote)

If this is so, then why have a national television debate?

  31. In a Covid 19 environment and a period of heavy rain it was an opportunity for all the candidates to beam their platform message into the homes of SGN constituents. In her interview last night after being declared the winner, More stated she was unable to visit all constituents to introduce herself. Again the blogmaster will share an opinion- the other candidates declined to participate because of a lack of confidence to be probed by experience journalists Julius Gittens and David Ellis.

  32. What is really sad is that the country is on the edge of having a unilateral govt
The people seems to have set their minds comfortably to fit into that mold
    A step beyond comprehensible reasoning
For a first time candidate i must congratulate Reifer for stepping out of his comfort zone and bringing issues in SGN to the forefront
    Although he did not win
His efforts are commendable as he got the attention of govt to do right by the people of SGN
For how long will govt do such only time will tell.
However but as some has observed the people might only be interested in love of party instead of the love of country
Therefore in the long run suffering might mean nothing to them and rather stay such a painful course

  33. The more relevant analysis is why the DLP failed in its message to excite the SGN electorate. The sooner you lot come to the realization that you must change the job of climbing back remains difficult.

  34. Lorenzo and others
Mariposa is not devastated slept very well
However i am saddened by the most glaring and startling message sent by the voters last night that barbados democracy is not in need of more voices to fill the void of opposition which is necessary and called for in a vibrant democracy
Yes sad that if barbados continues down this path at break neck speed the ending would not be good for the country and its people
I am reminded that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely
Unfortunately it might be too late when barbadians wake up to that truth
My pray is i hope not

  35. David u need to run fast and hard hold on to books on the democratic process in its totality read these books
You might learn how a democracy remains stable and vibrant
These on going victories for one party is nothing to cheer about
Hidden inside these victories are clusters of mischief that can hurt and harm the countries democratic process in the long run.
Analyzing what the party coulda shoulda on strategy is a weak attempt to by pass the continuing blows that barbados democracy is receiving which will weaken its purpose for good governance at some point.

  38. Voters go for Moore

    by BARRY ALLEYNE
    barryalleyne@nationnews.com

NOT EVEN a low voter turnout could stop Toni Moore’s red wave yesterday.
The 44-year-old general secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union earned a spot in the House of Assembly last night, easily taking care of five opponents in the St George North byelection.
After the win for the incumbent Barbados Labour Party (BLP) on her maiden try at elective politics, Moore said she remained committed to visiting every house in the constituency, a mission she was not able to accomplish in only seven weeks of campaigning.
    Celebrations
When Returning Officer Winston Estwick declared Moore the winner at 11:26 p.m. at St George Secondary School, a small band of supporters, backed by horns and drums, got the celebrations going.
Immediately after the announcement, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley said she understood what part the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic had played in only 49.8 per cent of eligible voters casting their X, but Moore’s victory was an impressive one since she got 67.6 per cent of all votes cast.
Moore finished with 3 154 votes, ahead of fellow first-timer Floyd Reifer, of the Democratic Labour Party, who totalled 1 327.
    Thankful
President of Solutions Barbados, Grenville Phillips II, collected 95 votes, the People’s Party for Democracy and Development’s David Walrond got 80, the United Progressive Party’s Ambrose Grosvesnor 70, while Bajan Free Party leader Alex Mitchell got only ten votes.
Just 4 748 votes were cast – of which 12 were spoilt – from a voters’ list of 9 849.
An exhausted-looking Moore, flanked by her husband Emmerson Bascombe and sevenyear- old daughter Aryanna, said the victory belonged to the people of the constituency.
“I am feeling thankful. I’m thankful to God and to a number of people for seeing in me, the kind of representative that St George North and Barbados deserves,” she told reporters.
The trade unionist said she was humbled that the constituents had given her an opportunity to serve.
“I undertook the campaign wanting to hit every house. It was important for me to get to know them. I wish I could have finished but my course has only just begun.
“I will keep the faith for those who have voted for me, and for those who have not voted for me, I’m here to serve all.”
The Prime Minister said a close look at the numbers showed just how well Moore had done under the unusual circumstances. “I’m exceedingly happy. The turnout was a little lower than we would have wanted, but we had a pandemic and at 49.8 per cent, considering that in Jamaica the entire turnout was 37 per cent, I think we have done well with just shy of a 50 per cent turnout. A lot of people expressed their concerns to us about coming out to vote,” Mottley added.
She said that, more importantly, the margin of victory was profound.
    Decisive victory
“I had told Toni that if she got 65 per cent of the vote I would hug her. She got 67.6 per cent, which exceeded my expectations. She did this with only seven weeks on the ground. This is a commanding and decisive victory,” the BLP leader stressed.
Reifer arrived at the school about 45 minutes later, accompanied by his wife Amanda, and accepted the loss gracefully.
“The people have spoken and somebody had to win. I congratulate Toni Moore; it was an intense campaign. I had great support throughout my campaign and I will be coming back stronger in the next election. I am still a lion,” he said.
Phillips, the Solutions Barbados president, also accepted his defeat with grace when it was clear the result would not be in his favour.
“I congratulate her,” he said about Moore’s impressive win. “(Floyd) Reifer is coming in at a commendable second and I congratulate both him and party leader Verla De Peiza for what they’ve managed to do in such a short time,” he said.

  39. Reifer ‘still a lion’ in defeat
AS THE FINAL VOTES were announced, confirming another Barbados Labour Party (BLP) victory – 3 154 votes for Toni Moore to 1 327 for Floyd Reifer – the mood in the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) camp was sombre.
Throughout the night over the course of four hours, box after box came back with big leads for Moore, causing some DLP supporters in Reifer’s Charles Rowe Bridge constituency office to hold their heads in resignation.
However, cheers soon erupted as Reifer held a private chat with his “people” away from the media, alongside party leader Verla De Peiza.
Afterwards, the self-proclaimed “lion” said he was far from finished.
“The people have spoken and somebody had to win. I congratulate Toni Moore; it was an intense campaign. I had great support throughout my campaign and I will be coming back stronger in the next election. I am still a lion,” he said.
The former West Indies cricketer and coach said the disappointing aspect was the more than 5 000 people who did not vote, most of them, he added, likely DLP supporters.
“As we go forward, we will have to see why those people did not vote. Perhaps they are fed up with what happened before, but we will find out and address it,” he said.
De Peiza said the results were a trial run for the future.
“We are disappointed with the overall outcome, but we are still heartened as the election was a minority decision and an improvement for us from the last candidate. It also represented a significant slide as far as the BLP capture is concerned,” she said.
De Peiza said the party felt “energised” as it had new potential candidates. She also said she was happy none of the newer parties posed a threat as there was now no need to look over their shoulders.

  42. Is this the sum effort some of you are able to discuss/debate matters?

    No wonder!

  43. Grenville signaled from early this would have been his last rodeo if. In this regard William’s earlier comment is relevant. The importance of third parties building credibility with the people by establishing a constituency apparatus; boots on the ground, a communication plan that is relevant etc. Now that he may possibly have been approaching the hump, he packs it in. Hopefully in weeks and months to come we will have some more debate on enticing credible alternatives committed to the cause of serving the people. That said the DLP and BLP constituency apparatus is strong and will require a SMART approach to overcome.

  44. Poor Mariposa! All she has left is her hot air!

  45. The blogmaster listened to the PM last night using percentages to support an argument that Toni Moore even out performed Glyne Clarke in popular support. How accurate is her analysis given the low turnout? Could it be a case the BLP did a better job of rousing its base/getting out the vote?

  46. Mariposa November 11, 2020 1:33 PM #: “How many responses so far. Yeap mariposa right on all points made earlier in comments. Blp yardfowls got an unexpected licking going into the election. Now in hiding.”

Nope!!! WRONG on ALL POINTS made earlier in comments. DLP yardfowls got an expected licking coming out of the election. Now belching and farting air.
