Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

Today the electorate of St. George North will vote for a member of parliament to fill the vacancy created by the ‘retirement’ of Gline Clarke. The blogmaster’s assessment is that it will be a straight contest between Floyd Reifer (DLP) and Toni Moore (BLP). Of the so-called third parties Grenville Phillips should retain third option in the number count. We can debate if Barbadians are ready for a third party or is this a case of the quality of the options presented. The blogmaster respectfully suggest the latter.

The result of the election will answer a few questions for political pundits.

  • Has the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) regain its standing as the credible alternative in the eyes of voters?
  • Despite managing the affairs of state in the most challenging period post independence, will the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) be able to convince the SGN electorate that it is the most competent to govern at this time?
  • Will Grenville Phillips increase his penetration of support in the constituency to forge the way for third parties in the future?
  • How large will the protest vote be which has been fomenting in a climate of austerity for the last 3 years?
  • Has the last 90 days of campaigning confirm the urgent need for electoral reform in Barbados?

So far by-election activities has been largely peaceful in keeping with Bajan tradition. Let us continue to make the country proud by delivering an uneventful event. The blogmaster’s vote will be cast for David Walrond, the agriculturist and community practitioner.

Let me say again one more time.
Everyone is saying that they are tired of the BLP , DLP scenario.
But don’t you know with a plethora of other parties they are still voting the same way all the time. Nothing has changed. They still vote for the same people time and again. Although they are doing for them or their communities.

When new Candidates with wonderful ideas present them to the voters, they don’t even get back their deposits. And that is a big source of mirth for people.

Do we want a difference or do we want the same??????? If you do the same the same way don’t expect difference results.

The WHITE BAJANS AND INDIANS are seeing this and are laughing at us.”

  3. “The importance of third parties building credibility with the people by establishing a constituency apparatus; boots on the ground, a communication plan that is relevant etc.”

    @ David BU

I also made those suggestions. What the so called ‘third parties’ are doing is contesting a general election, after which they go into hiding only to ‘resurface’ when another election is announced.
That’s what I ‘told’ Mr. Phillips II. He presented some interesting plans, which, if he had maintained his presence in the constituency to implement them during the past 2½ years, would have probably seen successful returns by now. Unfortunately, Mr. Phillips II chose to resurface with those plans, immediately after a by-election was announced. It sent the wrong message.

Grenville said he had been active in St. George North, but never publicised his activities because he did not want constituents to assume his motives were political. But, that’s what comes with being a politician. How does Mr. Phillips II think people would perceive his motives, when he came out with a ‘manifesto’ on the eve of a by-election?

Additionally, I wasn’t surprised at the PdP’s showing in the by-election either. As an Opposition party, we cannot make any excuses for Atherley and his team’s lackluster performance in parliament and addressing the socio-economic issues confronting the island. Atherley seems to riding on the back of Caswell Franklyn. What about the PAC hearings? Has there been any follow up on the Transport Board inquiry?
It is also interesting to note Mr. Phillips II received more votes that the PdP’s candidate, David Walrond.

Has it not occurred to you that regardless of the number of new parties and new candidates ,the Electorate considers them to be no different in policies or character? The Electorate gives each party adequate time to deliver on promises. This is who we are. We give every man a fair break. The result of this Bye -Election is not surprising to many analysts acquainted with the Bajan political culture.

“That is why we will never get too many proper candidates to run for elections.
People like you who salivate in anticipation of when intelligent, creative BLACK PEPOPLE “lose their deposits”.”
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Are you saying that those “BLACK PEOPLE” who are elected, democratically, to serve as MPs are neither intelligent nor creative?

What about the majority of those same black people who were elected during the period 2008 to 2018? There were No “Bajan Whites or Indians” serving in that Parliament.

What you should be arguing, in the first place, is for the removal of the need to make a financial deposit in order for any citizen to exercise his or her Constitutional right.

  6. The DLP must be concerned that it failed to persuade voters to come out in greater numbers. It may not be a big thing but there was a swing against the BLP in SGN.
The biggest loser was the PdP and it’s failure to at least get 300-500 votes. I’m not going to beat up Grenville, he has tried but he clearly demonstrated that he has little time for suggestions far less advice.
Another view of the low turn out may be the fact that although the voters are not giving third parties a chance, they are gradually losing faith in the BLPDLP.
The spin of hiding behind COVID is expected but in pure terms the numbers suggest otherwise.
However, as it stands now , the DLP should realise that unless it gets its act together it will suffer another devastating defeat whenever elections are called.
A well organized third party can still pose a threat to the decadent BLPDLP but that seems unlikely because there are not many citizens prepared to make a ten to fifteen years sacrifice.
In all fairness , Grenville’s decision to call it a day is understood. There are those who only watch the game from the pavilion. There are people who know everything about cricket but have never made a run; taken a wicket or taken a catch. Barbados has an over abundance of such people.
And perhaps that’s why all the real cricketers are found or those wanting to play join the decadent BLPDLP team.
    Peace.

Losing does not bother me but the dangers associated with the victory
Hell No it is not about Mariposa but a democracy under threat while eyes are wide closed shut

Please don’t do a Pontius Pilate and relegate the man with too many hats to the Bajan history book of oblivion.

The man (INRI) might have more lives than you think.

The man might have failed at being the Chief of Police of Bajan Bedroom Morality and as the political King Midas with the economic touch of gold.

But don’t be taken aback if the Emperor GP11 experiences a vision in the form of a sign of the Cross in the sky and ‘reincarnates himself’ from the dead Bajan political messiah into a man of the cloth pretending to be the Christ returned to save the lost souls of the Bajan people.

Don’t be surprised if GP11 declares himself to be a ‘born-again’ reverend and minister of the cloth and anoints himself as the High Priest of the Church of Bajan Salvation with the other GP serving as his sidekick.

  10. @ William

You are right about the nonsense of the CoVid stay aways. It is a silly idea. Your point about the failure of the DLP to pull out the voters is more important.
I get the impression the party leaders were either rejecting the advice they received, or rejected it. It must be very hard trying to advise a Barbadian about anything, from a company CEO, to a politician to a candidate.
The BLP has won and good luck to them; more important, the president has survived and is now in a position to claim all kinds of reasons for her victory, as she would. She is politically dishonest.
    But the people have spoken.

  11. David 07:26
We would suggest that you and others who opine so much about the two-party statism should spare a minute to try to reach a deeper understanding of this phenomenon, not only in Barbados but elsewhere as well.

At its base, it will always be nearly impossible for other actors to capture and hold a single seat and vastly more difficult to displace either wing unless some sort of outside, insurmountable, force sweeps away the duopoly, both parties.

The duopoly is systemic, dyed in the wool, represents in effect the totality of the political culture, resides deep within the consciousness of not only Dees and Bees but every child born on this 100,000 acres.

And unless third party forces are lucky, or are prepared to create the above circumstances, Barbados will be forever a duopoly which cannot deliver anything other than the interchanging elected dictatorship we’ve always had.

It could only be for the good health of duopoly that in conditions where the ruling party has had to drastically taper its less than 3-year old manifesto because of a dearth of vision that this result could have been so patently obvious to a casual observer.

Third party interests, by themselves, will never be able to interfere with this duopolistic force of nature which politics in Barbados represents.

  12. By elections rarely generate high vote turnouts, in most places they are used to send a message to the Gov’t as it would have a track record that people can evaluate and opposition parties can dissect to their advantage. Barbados is not like most places and I expected the BLP to continue its run, this is the second by election in recent memory and the BLP as the governing party has won both. Not sure any conclusions can be made from this result as in the first election it was led by a more dynamic David Thompson and this time it is led by a subdued Verla DePeiza.

Let me get a little shot in “Mariposa” is partly to blame she should have been knocking on doors in places like Free Hill instead of promoting the rap vote in the US.

  13. RE There are people who know everything about cricket but have never made a run; taken a wicket or taken a catch.

Cruise ship with suspected COVID-19 cases in Barbados – by Barbados Today November 12, 2020

The Government of Barbados on Wednesday received a request for assistance from a cruise ship with suspected positive cases of COVID-19 on board. The vessel, carrying 53 passengers and 68 crew, is set to arrive here Wednesday night, and will be met by Ministry of Health and Wellness officials who will evaluate the situation and respond to the requests for assistance.

When speak of a Democratic process it also involves decision making
However without a vibrant opposition ticking time bombs as in such situations would occur until the inevitable happens

  16. My sincere greetings and congratulations to our Supreme Leader Mia Mottley! What an overwhelming victory in SGN. Unlike the USA, Barbados is a model democracy where people and government, people and leader are one.

We should seriously consider postponing the next elections until 2030, as the result is already known.

  17. @ Tron November 12, 2020 10:28AM

“We should seriously consider postponing the next elections until 2030, as the result is already known”.

    Absolutely, get to stepping…People..

  18. Once again, I’ve never described myself as person of high intelligence, “then any such claim must be in the demented minds of those making the claims. In other words, a total fabrication.”

Your belching and farts does not easily rattles my cage either, because, if you examine my TAUNTS, you’ll realise I’m actually finding them rather entertaining.

What has me rolling on the floor with laughter is the fact that you CAN’T scroll pass WITHOUT responding. So, the more I TAUNT you, the more you’re PROVOKED to respond (i.e. belch and fart). So, WHO’S cage is easily rattled? Isn’t it hilarious?!?!

You’re now concerned about “a democratic process which since 2018 has shifted the balance of power in a dangerous direction?” I’m sure if the DEMS had won the last general election, you wouldn’t be so concerned.
You should be the last person to talk about democracy. Let me give you an example. You agreed when members of your party publicized the contents of former Transport Board employee Lisa Marshall’s personal file to imply she was thief, simply because your administration was offended at her being amongst a group of former TB employees the media interviewed, when they did not received their severance payments as promised. Rather than being concerned about “a democracy under threat while eyes (were) wide closed shut,” you were busy posting several contributions to BU, in which you labelled Ms Marshall as a thief. You eyes were “wide closed shut” at that time.

For people such as you, if your party is ‘not in power,’ you’ll wake every morning looking for some nonsense to criticize. Then you make it seems as though you’re concerned about the country, when in actuality you’re more concerned with your political party holding the reins of government.

Fortunately, the same democracy allows you to do what you’re doing on BU.

  19. Mariposa..i read that article last night, and since the clown show in parliament was trying to one up other Caribbean islands to get nuff nuff tourists last summer by opening up the island to infection….they are now STUCK with all those floating petri dishes….ain’t life grand when ya foolish..lol

  20. @ Mariposa

A cruise ship with CoVid victims being allowed in to our coastal waters is bad enough, but what kind of assistance are they requesting? The prostitution of tourism leaves us exposed to all kinds of risks, including asymptomatic carriers of this respiratory disease.
Keep up the good work, your steadfastness is remarkable. Some of the cyberbullies who attack will always claim they are having fun. Bullies always do. However, those who take the future of Barbados seriously will appreciate the seriousness of your submissions.

    @ Artaxerxes

You said and de ole man quotes

“…What the so called ‘third parties’ are doing is contesting a general election, after which they go into hiding only to ‘resurface’ when another election is announced…”

You are so very right and de ole man gine reply to you some things that Hee Hee will respond to in due time cause dem is pimps..

Elsewhere de ole man shared with a comrade in arms the observation made about David Waldron of the PdP

You note that Grenville Phillips the Bedroom Police WITH HIS ONE MAN PARTY, got more votes than the PdP with its 3person full compliment party!

    And why is that?

Is it as you have pointed out, the fact that they disappear ofter these elections fiascoes or, that they are hobbled from within?

Let us examine the PdP playbook if you have a moment.

Senator Caswell Franklyn is the main mouthpiece of the PdP Party – that is a fact but here is the thing.

Scripts can be created and given to every member AND LEARNT BY HEART! Just look at Toni Moore and Floyd Reifer and you see what was done with the two if them!

That is not hard but what is clearly evident with the PdP’s outreach IS THAT, OUTSIDE OF THE SENATE AND THE PDP WEBSITE, there is a “governor” being placed on that party by Mia Mottley through her proxy Reverend Joseph Atherley!

Listen to what de old man is saying carefully and track it!

Franklyn speaks in the Senate and destroys the BLP.

Atherley comes to Parliament and talks nice to his BLP colleagues like if he was by their House last night. Its like night and day so the electorate is getting the message day Joe is simple, euphemism for ballsless, but Fraklyn is fearless.

    But here’s the issue!

Atherley is the Leader of the Opposition and Franklyn is just a Senator

And that status can be revoked anytime

But I Piece the Prophet concur with you that, without a sustained, and pertinent, presence in the 30 communities, David Waldron WAS DOOMED TO FAIL!

Plus, Mugabe Big Works Mottley, president for life, is in charge if all the non existent resources in the IMF constrained economy

And people saying, “why put Waldron there who can’t rub two pennies together when a constituent want a thing, when we can put Toni Moore and know dat she can still give we a berry”

Until 3rd parties can mobilizer while in their winter, they will be meaningless!

  22. @Pacha

    True.

Maybe third parties need to create a role outside of parliament as a kind of people’s parliament to act as an influencer of the vote on the duopoly.

  23. Hal mostly disheartening is the people lack of concern and their inability to connect the dots
Maybe the problem lies in a society having no self-esteem
How is it that govt after months of having several COVID ships docked in Carlisle Bay all at taxpayers expense moves forward to start a process that contains serious health risk to the population
Is this madness or a govt driven by absolute power

There is no one on BU other than you that displays characteristics of an arrogant, obnoxious BULLY. We’re all aware of how he tyrannizes BU and is habitually cruel, insulting and threatening to other contributors whom you perceive as beneath you.

What also concerns me, is the way you take a special interest stalking MEN all over BU, ESPECIALLY David and me IN PARTICULAR, just to nit pick our contributions and take particular pains to make snide remarks and use pejorative names to describe us, even if you have to create the opportunities to do so. Your fascination and obsession with other men is not typical of ‘straight men’ and such behaviour is usually associated with gay men.

Most bisexual men ‘on the down low’ don’t identify themselves as being gay, that’s why they portray being obnoxious, arrogant, aggressive bullies to cover their soft interiors. So, in mind, you’re not only a BULLY, but based on your actions, it seems as though you’re a BULLER as well.

Just received word via a phone call claiming Alex Mitchell, will commence litigation in the high court today. He is requesting a recount. He claimed the ballot boxes were switched.

I ask the gentleman on the phone, if the source of his information was credible. He replied “Robert Bobby Clark will be contacted today on the matter”.

I don’t know if the caller got inaccurate information. He probably heard that
Alex Mitchell was jumping in de wharf at HIGH TIDE ???

  28. @ Piece the Prophet

Unfortunately, the ‘third parties’ embrace the opportunities that are there for them to grow. Also, too many of their members were disgruntled members of either the BLP or DLP and it’s all about ‘getting back’ at their former parties or seeking revenge…… which also helps to stagnate growth.

They should have a continued presence in the constituencies. For example, they could organise community development programs, establish youth and sports organisations………a fund from the proceeds of fund raising events and donations, to assist elderly and indigent people. Some of the reasons why Hammie Lah was so successful in both BLP and DLP, was because he was well known, humble and came with a background of community work. Pinelands Creative Workshop, of which he was a member, forged a community spirit among the people from the Pine and surrounding districts, producing actors, dancers, writers, sportsmen, and even politicians. However, you may ask why Rodney Grant, who entered politics with a background similar to that of Lashley, was not as successful. Two completely different individuals, two completely different attitudes.

To be fair, the only candidate to talk about what were his current and future plans for the St. George South constituency, was Grenville Phillips II. The other candidates were too caught up in ‘back in the day’ style politics, which usually involves, ‘scoring political points for cheap laughs.’ Delisle Bradshaw’s unfortunate remark, “any fool can play cricket,” immediately comes to mind.

However, to overcome the established political parties would take a certain amount of patience, dedication and time, which it seems as though members of the third parties are prepared to commit themselves.

  29. “…………which it seems as though members of the third parties are NOT prepared to commit themselves.”

Mia needs to stop acting like she’s Elizabeth 3 and try not to make anymore enemies across the Caribbean and FIX what is wrong in Barbados instead….it’s appears that’s all she is aspiring to be, taking Elizabeth’s slave system and misusing it….ain’t gonna happen.

  42. @ David

You should adapt to those challenges and know by now, to some sophamaniacs, certain discussions are not as important as massaging their personal egos. It reminds of ‘back in the day’ when ‘sesquipedalian’ Don Blackman was at the peak of his political career. Blackman was often heard on political platforms unnecessarily using ‘a lot of big words.’ The crowd used ‘to go wild’ and say he was an intellectual. To them, that separated him from the other politicians.

We need humble politicians who would connect with the constituency, while representing constituents’ needs in Parliament. This is a different era and voters are no longer impressed with people who regurgitate economic history and alternative theories from books they read and pass on the information as though it originated with them. Or, during a ‘discussion’ about, let’s say for example, US politics, they ask an irrelevant question and then respond to it with long winded waffle about Plato, Socrates and who was killed in WWII. That’s to make themselves sound knowledgeable.

Also, as was experienced in the by-election, the Lionel Craig and Delisle Bradshaw type politicians are relics from the past. The electorate is no longer tolerating pejorative remarks from silly, childish, immature old men. Or, the aggressive, obnoxious bullies of the Chris Sinckler and David Estwick type. Then there are those suffering from narcissistic personality disorder (NPD,) which is characterized by a long-term pattern of exaggerated feelings of self-importance, an excessive craving for admiration, and struggling with empathy. They often brag about themselves, saying they wore leather shoes to school, while their mates went barefooted. As long as you sing in their ‘How Great Thou Art’ choir, you’re a member of the fan club.

Disingenuous politicians are more dangerous. They say one thing today and something else tomorrow, when the situation changes. That is a societal phenomenon even exhibited on BU. I remember someone ‘saying’ on BU the brain is a muscle. When corrected by Dr. GP, the individual copied and pasted information from Google, which was also dismissed by GP. They subsequently denied ever ‘saying’ it and said they were referring to what they saw in an on-line article. Or, agreeing that an island could be free of crime, depending on how crime is defined. They denied ever making the statement, while saying crime was with us from the Garden of Eden.

It is this type of emotional immaturity and sophomania that pushes some people into promoting themselves as ‘intellectual demigods.’ These people are in need of professional help…… in some cases a child psychiatrist may be appropriate.

If Atherley has blamed “the weather for the poor showing,” don’t be surprised if he may want to push the idea of ‘mail-in votes.’

  43. Sorry but with a govt having a majority
The word Default would never be uttered again from their lips of govt
It is a shameful process which degrades a country management to levels lower than a downgrade
Any thing which relates to debt which would cause this govt embarrassment would be kept under lock eye
So easy to be done as there is no opposition to ask questions or seek answer
One can as well come to the conclusion that barbados democracy has been hijacked by a dictator using a well oiled engineered Democratic process

SOMEHOW I BELIEVE HE THINKS THAT BU ONLY CONTAINS THE KIND OF CHARACTERS HE MEETS FREQUENTLY WHILST LIMING ON THE BLOCK IN THE DEACON ROAD/BLACK ROCK AREAS.

  47. ONE OTHER THING I LEARNED FROM THE BY ELECTION IS THAT THE 2X3 ISLAND SHOULD INDEED CHANGE TO BE A REPUBLIC.

THEY CAN ALSO CHANGE THE SYMBOL ON THE NATIONAL FLAG FROM A BROKEN TRIDENT TO A BANANA.

How can people in St George North vote for a government that has only weeks ago employed a so-called consultant for three months for Bds$80000?
The DLP failed to localised the national incompetence of the government and made its acts of arrogance relevant to their situation. That failure led to their defeat.
Bogus talk about strategy is just that. Political strategy cannot replace policy strategies which is what the people of Barbados want. After two years we are yet to hear of the government’s industrial strategy; its economic strategy; its educational strategy; its environmental strategy.
All we get is empty rhetoric, with hands waving, and fingers pointing and hot air polluting the atmosphere. Maybe the DLP needs to avoid group think and come up with radical new ideas that will appeal to ordinary people and put a dividing line between them and the BLP.
They have even allowed Junior to come up with a mumbo-jumbo idea of training people in skills in six weeks – apprenticeships that previously took five years.
Of course, technology and know-how have shortened that period, but six weeks is a bit far. They should give him the necessary respect, but still challenge him to explain himself, instead of allowing him to hide behind his so-called degrees, and expertise, and business acumen.
It is the old Bajan way of closing down debate by claiming do you know who you are talking to? I am a lawyer, a doctor, have a PhD, or MA in Political sociology, or book keeping from Cave Hill, or wherever.
It is a good time for the DLP to go back to the drawing board, avoid the old advisers and consultants, and bring in a fresh team of thinkers.
