Open letter to The Hon. Mia Amor Mottley, Q.C., M.P. (Prime Minister) and
ย The Hon. John A. King, M.P.(Minister of Creative Economy, Culture and Sports)

Dear Prime Minister and Minister of Culture,

John_King
Minister of Culture, John King
mia_mottley
Prime Minister Mia Mottley

I am sure by now you are aware that people in Bristol removed the statue of slave trader, Edward Colston, and deposited it in a nearby river. With this act, people in that city sent a clear message to the world that they would no longer tolerate the glorification of accomplices in the commission of crimes against humanity and those who grew rich from their sordid involvement in human trafficking.

In the present climate when there is a heightened global awareness of the need for zero tolerance towards racism and its symbols, it is unconscionable that in Barbados, a country where over 95% of its citizens are descendants of enslaved Africans, that a monument like Colstonโ€™s in Bristol, sits in the heart of our capital city. It is an affront to the people of Barbados and to those all over the world who are standing up to speak out against racism that Nelsonโ€™s monument continues to sit in the heart of Bridgetown. It is long overdue that this odious tribute to racism be removed.

There are no longer any excuses that can be made for your governmentโ€™s failure to remove it. I am therefore writing to you as a concerned Bajan to call on you to do the right thing and remove this affront to the people of Barbados and to all those who today are courageously raising their voice against racism.

It would be very fitting, if it was replaced with a tribute to Nanny Grigg and to the many thousands of unsung Bajan women whose self-sacrifice, ingenuity and struggle have played a decisive role in our peopleโ€™s progress from the pit of degradation that the English slave masters threw us into.

Yours

Tee White

Admiral Nelson was a man of many flaws. But we are not, I hope, suggesting that it is those flaws that were the most interesting thing about him.

Nor, Iโ€™d hope, are we seriously proposing that they are why he is perpetually celebrated. Horatio Nelson, is known as the man who twice defeated Napoleon at sea, and, in so doing, confirmed Britainโ€™s unparalleled naval supremacy. Did Nelson agree with Wilberforce on the question of slavery? No, he did not. And yet his unmatched tactical brilliance helped to pave the way both for Wilberforceโ€™s ultimate triumph, and for the Pax Britannica in which that triumph was set. Indeed, after the British abolished the slave trade in 1807 โ€” a move that seems obvious and natural now, but that was radical at the time โ€” Nelsonโ€™s successors took manumission to heart. The Royal Navyโ€™s role in the suppression of the transoceanic slave trades represents a remarkable episode of sustained humanitarian activity, involving patient diplomacy and problematic wrangling over treaty arrangements, dangerous and exacting naval operations, and intense political debate at home questioning the cost and purpose of the patrols. And how, one has to ask, were the British able to do this? Because, thanks to Admiral Nelson, they enjoyed almost complete control of the seas.

We often date the โ€œcentury of peace of prosperityโ€ that preceded the First World War from the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 to the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand in 1914. But it would be just as fair to push the start back a decade or so โ€” to the string of decisive naval victories that Nelson did so much to engineer. Napoleonโ€™s defeats at both Aboukir Bay and Trafalgar represented a sincere setback to his dream of matching the British at sea, forced the abandonment of any plan to invade the British Isles, and put a swift end to the French Empireโ€™s nascent re-enslavement project. In consequence, Britain quite literally โ€œruled the wavesโ€ until the end of Second World War, at which point that crucial privilege was handed silently over to the ascendant United States. In helping to forge the modern world โ€” and, dare I say, โ€œthe Westโ€ โ€” Nelson has few peers.

Lord Nelsonโ€™s Statue โ€“ Bridgetown, Barbados

Photo Negative Glass Plate by Charles W. Blackburne.

Lord Horatio Nelson, National Heroes Square (Trafalgar Square), Bridgetown, Barbados.

The statue of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson in Barbados was unveiled in Bridgetown on 22nd March 1813. It was sculpted from bronze by Sir Richard Westmacott. It is considered an excellent likeness of the British Admiral.

Very soon after his victory and subsequent death at Cape Trafalgar in 1805, plans were made in Barbados to honour Horatio Nelsonโ€™s memory.

His popularity came because Bajans were very grateful and relieved not to become a French West Indian colony, which would have been the alternative if Admiral Horatio Nelson had not gained victory for the British off Cape Trafalgar on the southern coast of Spain. This battle was the most decisive naval victory of the wars, ensuring British naval supremacy during the rest of the Napoleon Wars. It was also important for trade routes from Britain to Barbados.

The Battle of Trafalgar was fought on 21st October 1805, and was considered the most famous naval battle in history, and was where the Royal Navy led by Admiral Nelson devastated Napoleonโ€™s combined Spanish and French fleet.

To show appreciation, a memorial service was held on 5th January 1806 at the St Michaelโ€™s Parish Church (now St Michaelโ€™s Cathedral), and within days Bajans were raising funds for a memorial statue. They then purchased the statue and land, naming it Trafalgar Square, paying tribute to the Admiral by erecting the statue.

For many years after, wreaths were laid at the statue on the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar (21st October).

Statue of Lord Horatio Nelson, Trafalgar Square, Bridgetown, Barbados

For some time now the Nelson Statue has been at the centre of controversy for its removal, because it was said that Nelson did not like Barbados. History Proves otherwiseโ€ฆ LORD HORATIO NELSON IS CREDITED WITH SAVING BARBADOS FROM SURE DESTRUCTION BY FRENCH INVADERS IN 1805.

Nelson was a Hero to England and Barbados. We with little knowing of the true history of Lord admiral Horatio Nelson he was the protector of the West Indy’s. Without Nelson we would have changed hands several time from Portage’s, French and Spanish Nelson was stationed in the Caribbean in his youth. He whipped the French in 4 major battles Copenhagen, Port St. Vincent, The battle of the Nile and Trafalgar. Why would you remove his statue?

Trafalgar Square in Bridgetown was renamed National Heroes Square in April 1999. The only changes to date have been the ceasing of the traditional wreath laying on the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and the change of direction in which Nelson now faces.

THOSE WHO REFUSE TO LEARN FROM HISTORY ARE DOOMED TO REPEAT ITโ€ฆWHY ERASE IT?

  6. More than five centuries too late. The head should be displayed on a pike.

  7. Well blow me down! NASCAR has banned the Confederate flag! The Confederate flag taken down in the face of red necks…. and as i type white people in the US are attacking a Confederate statue in VIrginia.
But here in Barbados Negroes are clinging to Nelson’s statue talking about their history.

    Shame! Shame! Shame!

  8. We should definitely also remove the trident from our national flag. Because the trident was already on the colonial flag. We should also radically change the police and military uniforms, because they remind us of the colonial times, especially the guards with their tropical helmet. I propose a new style of Zulu warriors, loincloth with a little straw at the bottom and naked at the top.

Ahh dear. The usual racist screeds from the White supremacists.

  10. PLT,

Have you ever heard of an argument ad absurdum? Explain to us why we should blow Nelson away but let the white colonial helmets stay. Didn’t the British troops wear such helmets in 1937? And what about the many villages in Barbados, which are named after old plantations?

Where exactly does this line between politically correct and incorrect run?

  11. You are being ridiculous! We are not attempting to erase the history, just reframe it by chosing our heroes. Can i get the European blood out of my veins???

I accept that slavery happened but i do not wish to celebrate it.

The matter of Nelson’s statue in Bridgetown is quite simple. It is a truism that history is written by the victors, Monumental statues are one mode of inscribing this history.

The Nelson statue is a historical monument erected by racists to celebrate the accomplishments of this White supremacist who spared no effort during his illustrious military and political career to perpetuate the enslavement of African people. In the early 19th century White supremacist racists in Barbados were the winners, so they wrote their version of history.

Now it is the early 21st century and we need to decide as a Barbadian society what version of history we will write. Tearing down the statue of Nelson does not change history. Tearing down the statue of Nelson writes a new version of history.

We already started to write a new version of history when we turned the statue around a few decades ago, but we lacked the nerve to remove it from our most prestigious civic space, our Heroes’ Square. It is embarrassing.

I understand that political parties have to weigh the risk of offending their rich benefactors; governing parties have also to weigh the risk of offending UK tourists who may think it quaint enough to pause for 15 seconds and take a selfie. However, there comes a point when customer service tips all the way back to servitude.

So we sing the anthem, but we are just mouthing words. We don’t mean them, or this humiliating monument would have been moved decades ago.

If we fail to remove this monument to Nelson we are saying to the world that we are still too afraid to write our own “names on history’s page.” We are declaring that the racism that still stains our national psyche has fatally impaired our “expectations great.” We are making an embarrassing mockery of that dream we once held to be “strict guardians of our heritage, firm craftsmen of our fate.”

  13. @robert lucas June 10, 2020 5:00 PM “I have never visited the UK or Europe ; I am strictly a new world person.”

There is nothing new aout this part of the world. New to the Europeans who came, new to the Africans who were brought.

But haven’t the indigenous people, your people, been living here for maybe 60,000 years?

Never use other people’s language/ideas to define yourself.

This the not the new world.

This is your own old world.

  14. It’s really amazing how many commentators on BU who live in North America and the UK want to have a say here in the Caribbean. I think that with 40 percent and soon 50 percent unemployment, we should all be clear who rules the island and has the say here. It’s the tourists from Britain. They love Grand Admiral Nelson. Without the British tourists our gross national product is lower than in South America and many African nations.

At least we have an enlightened Prime Minister, not an ideologist who puts politics above the common good.

  15. peterlawrencethompson Avatar
    peterlawrencethompson

    @Tron
You are indeed being absurd. Racists were not trying to write history with their helmets; it is simply the style that they wore which we have continued to wear. Similarly with all the absurd nonsense I hear from racists and house negroes about tearing down buildings. We use old buildings or fashions until we feel like creating new ones.

There may be place names that deserve changing, because place naming is an overt attempt to write history. I am quite willing to put up with names like Codrington and Colleton even though I know that the people that they are named after were disgusting scumbags. YMMV. On the other hand I vehemently object to the renaming of Jack Ma’ Nanny Gap as Wavell Avenue.

    “They love Grand Admiral Nelson.”
    ++++++++++++++
Utter and complete nonsense. Over 98% of British tourists have no idea that there is a Nelson monument in Barbados until they read it in the travel brochure. The 2% who have a clue are probably those who have a UK friend of Bajan heritage who bragged that ours was older than theirs. It makes no measurable contribution to our tourism industry.

The dictionary defines racism as “a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.”

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Anyone who believes white privilege exists is by definition a racist.

Anyone who believes blacks are not racists is by definition a racist.

  18. A perfect illustration of the importance of symbols. Why a flag? Why an anthem? Why a pledge? Why a coat of arms? Why a national flower? These are the things that bind us together as a nation.

The toppling of Nelson would serve as a rallying cry and a signal that we are entering a new phase as “true guardians of our heritage, firm craftsmen of our fate”.

I cannot think of a more opportune moment or a moment when we needed it more!

This Nelson Statue is a waste of time and money when we have people struggling to survive another day that are more deserving of attention than a statue that ain’t need a thing.

Open a bank account and ask all these people that what the statue more or taken down to deposit money there and see if these same people will put their money where their mouth is to fund what they want done.

Instead of worrying about a statue, maybe we should be focusing on writing accurate Barbadian history books to support Bajan History being taught in primary and secondary schools so we can understand and learn from our history instead of erecting statues and placing names on buildings to only forget about the same people because very little about the people are written in books.

  20. Cuhdear Bajan on a roll! As i said earlier we need to take off the white man’s spectacles.

The language reveals the mindset. When i was a child i wondered why my text book said that Columbus discovered this part of the world when people were already here. But here is Robert forgeting his own ancestors were the people who Columbus found and using Columbus language.

I don’t want to be too hard on you. Your line of thought is not completely stringent either, but – as you well know – very decisionist ๐Ÿ˜‰ So let’s blow up the statute next week for the sake of peace.

Under two conditions: You pay for the demolition costs and blow up old Barrow too, because he’s the master of economic disaster and founder of this blue, criminal organisation.

  22. Perhaps critical analyzers should research the part that emotions play in mobilizing people. Maybe you are coldblooded. If so, then you are in the minority.

I have already done my part and put some of my money where my mouth is in this pandemic. I’d be happy to donate to Nelson’s removal. Perhaps some of these overseas Bajans would do the same.

Yes, but the bigot in the WH is adamant that he will maintain the names of the Army bases named after Confederate generals, the same generals who fought for the continuation of slavery. The slave owners may have lost the war but their influence went far beyond the Southern States they were literally hundreds of statues of Confederate leaders all over the US and one State Alabama has a State holiday for the leader of the Confederacy (Jefferson Davis) while local observances are held in his name in Florida and Mississippi.

I’m not cold-blooded, I just know bajans and they are all talk with little to no action.

Sure you can start the petition, get people to sign and voice support for it but when it comes to actively putting skin in the game, all that support will quickly disappear. Ask those same supporters to put forward money to cover the costs of the move and see how fast they will make excuses and disappear.

I challenge anybody to open the account, ask for donations and see how far they get. Moving the statue is not cheap and i would be surprised if the account gets anywhere near the money required.

  26. @ Sargeant,

Dundas street in Toronto could be renamed and statues of racist could be taken down.

  27. Sargeant, just Trump trying to hold on to his deplorables. He is counting on them and voter suppression of blacks to keep him in office.

If the blacks don’t turn out this time they will deserve their fate. Judging from the protests they will stand in line all day and not leave until they have voted. They will probably blow up the polling station if turned away.

  28. @Hants

Kingston Rd. (Hwy2) becomes Dundas St. in Whitby- they should include that in any petition.

  29. Anyone who believes white privilege exists is a racist???

White people took over the world with the Chinese invention. Gunpowder! These weapons allowed them to plunder the world’s resources and the free labour of black people. It is not any inherent superiority, just the weapons.

This military dominance and the economic benefits derived from stolen resources and labour allowed them to organise the world to suit themselves.

White privilege is derived from this world system. Nothing genetic.

    Stupid dictionary!

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

What do you think causes blacks to be non racist?

There is only one race, the human race.

My definition of a racist would be someone who believes there is more than one race!!

That is the sine qua non (that’s Latin) of being able to determine superiority or inferiority.

“Sine qua non or conditio sine qua non is an indispensable and essential action, condition, or ingredient. It was originally a Latin legal term for “[a condition] without which it could not be”, or “but for…” or “without which [there is] nothing”. Wikipedia”

  32. Pretty meaningless words! Got any actions to back them up? Not when you are a Trump supporter! He is ALL about race. Perhaps you should enlighten him instead of me because i thought nothing about race until i saw people of his ilk on tv in 1968. Then i was forced to deal with the reality that i later found out my mother had been dealing with alone on the streets of England.

Preach your sermon to people of that ilk, many of whom live and move in your circle! Those of my ilk just push back against their racism. It must end where it began – with them!

  33. If we don’t call it racism we must surely call it colourism. Still an ism and a scism. Semantics meant to distract from the reality and make us feel guilty and foolish enough to stop our march forward.

    Nice try but no cigar!

  34. I hope you realize there’s ANOTHER racist in this forum, who is EVEN PROBABLY MORE DISGUSTING than John.

He uses racial jokes and stereotypical statements to subtly express his racists views about black people, perhaps believing we’re so dumb, it would be difficult to analyze his sarcastic, pejorative remarks.

  35. The one who speaks in gibberish?

  36. It now looks as if the commissioner of police is saying he does not have the power to give to go ahead for the George Floyd protest on Saturday. If he does not, and he does, then is it the attorney general, or the president?
Here is another example of a government led by a woman who professes to be conscious of her culture avoiding by stealth permitting Barbadians to march in support of a man savagely murdered by police.
Her silence is amazing. Why doesn’t the attorney general speak out? Why doesn’t the president speak out? Of course, they will use the bogus excuse of public health as an excuse. But social distancing can be enforced.
Further, there are some things worse than death, like police brutality. Is the real reason pressure from the US embassy? Or not making white Barbados feel uncomfortable?
David Denny and his group has exposed another part of the duplicitous nature of the president’s politics. She is all things to all men. This explains why the local parasitic business class can survive, no matter which government is in power.
Protestors should turn up on Saturday and see what she will do; order the police to remove them by force? Bring out the army to shoot down unarmed civilians? What? Of course, no support from the president, no coverage from CBC.
We have the making of a tyrant.

Permits โ€˜onlyโ€™ from PM or AG

    by RACHELLE AGARD rachelleagard @nationnews.com

THE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE is not allowed to issue any permits to those seeking to hold social gatherings, marches or protests under COVID-19 regulations.

This was made clear by Attorney General Dale Marshall, who said that all permissions in such cases would have to be granted by the Prime Minister or himself.

This comes in the wake of police intervention at a protest staged by the Caribbean Movement For Peace and Integration (CMPI) last weekend outside the United States Embassy in Wildey, St Michael. It was held to show solidarity with the global Black Lives Mattermarches which started in the US after the death of African American Floyd George at the hands of a white policeman.

Police broke up Saturdayโ€™s protest after the terms of the permit allowing only ten people to picket were breached.

Head of the movement, David Denny, said Tuesday they had already applied for permission to hold another march on Saturday, from Kensington Oval to Independence Square.

No numbers were specified in the application, he said, as the Attorney General would decide on that.

Marshall told the DAILY NATION on Tuesday that under normal circumstances the Commissioner would grant permission to those looking to hold a march or protest under the Public Order Act, but under the current COVID-19 environment, only Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley or the Attorney General could do so.

    Seek permission

โ€œThe entity (CMPI) wrote to the Commissioner of Police and sought permission. They asked specifically for permission for ten people. The Commissioner did not tell them they could only get ten or anything of the sort. The Commissioner informed them they would still have to get permission from the Attorney General under the COVID directives for the gathering,โ€ he said.

Citing paragraphs 20 and 25 of the Emergency Management (COVID-19) Order, 2020, Directive No. 6, Marshall said in order for a march of any kind to be hosted, the applicants needed to get the exemption from the Attorney General.

โ€œI gave them permission to have a march with thenumber of people that they wanted, which was the same ten people. What they asked for is what they got. More people turned up than that, so it is that amount of peoplethat put their march in breach of the conditions, both of the permission I gave for the gathering and of the permission that was given by the

    Commissioner of Police,โ€ he said.

However, Marshall said what occurred last weekend would not militate against future permission being sought and each case would be dealt with on its merit.

โ€œI can see no reason why the problem that arose last weekend would prevent either the Commissioner of Police under the Public Order Act, or me under the COVID Directive, from not giving permission to march. In every case, as far as I am concerned, the issue has to do with whether the march can take place in such a way as to be able not to create a problem with a risk to the spread of COVID,โ€ he said.

โ€œWe have done very well so far in containing the spread of COVID. I think up to yesterday (Monday) we had 16 straight days of no positive COVID results. But complacency is going to be our greatest enemy. Just because weโ€™ve done well, we canโ€™t then act in such a way to allow excessive numbers to go out there for the purposes of a march and that is what we have to guard against,โ€ he said, adding that health officials usually advised him of the practicality of the situation.

Commissioner of Police Tyrone Griffith said police always sought to be fair and encourage peaceful picketing, but they would be firm if necessary.

โ€œIf you saw any of the videos, you will see that was clearly not the case. One of the things we advocate for is peaceful picketing and we always try to accommodate peaceful picketing. I think they had another agenda and not what they set out to indicate that that was their purpose,โ€ he said.

In Barbados, we have Two Societies, those that want to Enjoy their Freedoms, Sense of Liberty and want to Live under the Rule of Law and Hoping and Praying that the Lies would Cease and whose Desire is to see the Betterment of Barbados for All.

The Other Society are not Concerned with that, they want A New History. They want to make what was, wasnโ€™t and what is, isnโ€™t. It is like seeing two old men walking down the street, one with grey hair and one with jet-black hair. You know that one of them is Portraying a False Imageโ€ฆHe is Trying to Rewrite History and wants you to Believe it. Moreover, many people look at the False man and say โ€œhe look good naโ€.

The Old man with the jet-black hair wants you to believe that he is youthful and full of New Ideas like what his jet-black hair (falsehoods) represents. He does not believe in Truth, he believes in Vanity. He has learned how to use emotion (I look good na?) wanting you to believe in the Falseness.

There are a Good Portion of the People in this Section of Society who Dress-up Old Decrepit Ideas and who present it to you as New Ideas as Enlightened Ideas but Underneath is the same Old man that is Pretending. In addition, he Believes in Control, Dependency and Lack of Opportunity who thinks he knows what is best for you and will Force his Will on you and you must Obey.

The Old man with the Grey hair has seen many things Transpire in his backyard. He has seen Manley Destroy Jamaica, he has seen Burnham Destroy Guyana, he has seen Castro Destroy Cuba, and he has seen Chavez Destroy Venezuela and has witnessed Corde Attempt to Destroy Grenada. Moreover, in Barbados he has seen Incompetence Reduce Barbados to a Shell. HE DOES NOT WANT THE LIES ANY LONGER BECAUSE HE HAS BECOME A LITTLE BIT WISER.

But the Old man with the jet-black hair is still with us Propagating his Falsehood Narratives. He is saying if we add this Dye to our heads, we will be Spritely. He wants you to Believe in the Lie! He will turn Anything Upside down (the Whole of Society) to get you to go along with Fooling yaself.

Out Past is Our Past and it Cannot be Changed, it may be hidden but it Cannot be Changed. Our Present is where we are. Our Future has Not Yet Been Written.

We Cannot Allow a Child to Lead us for he has Not yet Learned Wisdom (THE MAN WITH THE PETITIONED SIGNATURES).

Nor can we Allow and must not allow the Old man with the jet-black hair to fool us, we the Society who Believes in Freedom and Goodness should STAND UP otherwise the man with the jet-black hair will write the Future of Lies and Deceit!

The Agitators of the world do Not Want you to Look Back. They only want you to Learn what they Tell you and they Use Emotions to do it. They Suspend Reason, They Suspend Logic, they only Know the Now a in โ€œHeightened Emotionsโ€.

The Time Just before Nelson Died was a Turbulent time. In England there was the Battle on the Government Front to Abolish Slavery. Nelson Fought Against France and Spain and Won, thereby Ensuring that England could Continue on their Path of Abolishing Slavery and he Protected the Seas to make sure that was done. He was Alive when the Revolt in Haiti happened so he Knew and Lived the Immediacy of the Burning Issues of the Day.

We have One Statue that was Paid for by Barbadians of All Walks of Life. We have Trafalgar Square that was also Purchased to Erect the Statue on, by Barbadians who Regarded what Nelson did on their behalfโ€ฆ It is the Only Statue and Land Paid for by the Barbadian Public and that is the One that is being Petitioned to be taken down???

NELSON STATUE IS A SYMBOL OF FREEDOM FROM SLAVERY AND OPPRESSIONโ€ฆBUT YOU SEEK TO TAKE AWAY OUR SYMBOLS OF PROGRESSIONโ€ฆIT IS CLEAR THAT YOU BELONG TO THE DYSFUNCTIONAL SOCIETY AND WANT TO MAKE BARBADOS IN YOUR IMAGE!

Barbadians Used to Celebrate Nelson and Horatio are Common Barbadian Names
