Solutions Barbados COVID-19 Survival Plan

grenville-phillips

Submitted by Grenville Phillips II,

I did not know what to make of last night’s [1 April 2020] announcement. We continue to treat this COVID-19 as a political exercise. However, it seems to have finally dawned on someone that their political games will have fatal consequences.

Last night, the Government finally admitted what was obvious to everyone. They stated: “We therefore need to formulate a plan of survival for Barbados!”
We ought to remember that the Government noted that they made a plan with all political parties, unions and the merchants. However, they specifically excluded Solutions Barbados and the UPP – for purely political reasons.
After developing an ineffective political plan with their supporters, we tried to provide them with our best advice. They either rejected or ignored our advice, so we advised the public on how they could prepare for COVID-19.
We advised the Government to effectively close Barbados to normal business, and our borders to visitors. We recommended that this be done on Wednesday 25 March 2020, when the trend of exponential growth was evident. We now know that our COVID-19 cases were growing exponentially at an out-of-control rate of 3 days at that time.
The Government rejected our advice, and allowed out-of-control exponential growth for a further 4 days. But their political efforts were ineffective, since the shut-down was partial and our borders remained open. Persons entering were not tested for the virus, instead, they were given an ineffective temperature reading.
The Government continued to reject or ignore our advice, and allowed the COVID-19 cases to grow at the same exponential rate for a further 4 days, before finally appearing to be serious last night. Now that they are looking for a plan, we suggest the following.
SUGGESTIONS FOR AN EFFECTIVE SURVIVAL PLAN
First, stop the inflow of cases by closing our borders to people. The Government’s problem is that this goes against the WHO recommendation. Many critical WHO recommendations on COVID-19 have been proven wrong. We should not be guinea pigs as the WHO is learning on-the-job. Therefore, look out for the health interests of Barbadians and close our borders now.
Second, shut down Barbados for two weeks. Everyone except those working in thread-bare essential services should stay home for 2 weeks. This is what was finally announced today (9 days late).
Third, effectively enforce the shut-down. This has yet to be done. Even our youth know that it is a joke, or a game like ‘tag’.
Four, order the Abbott tester (see link below), which can give test results in 5 minutes, and start meaningful testing. Normally, this would not have been a problem – we could simply have asked the US Ambassador for a few machines. However, we have muddied the waters.
We have publicly tried to embarrass US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, when he visited the Caribbean. CBC-TV also tries to find the most embarrassing stories about US President Trump (including from the anti-US Islamic station, Al Jazeera), which they air, every night, during the 7:00 pm news.
These reckless actions risk harming us all, when we need to call on our proven friends for assistance. They also make requesting assistance embarrassing, given our past behaviour. However, we should swallow our pride and do what is necessary for Barbados.
After the two-week shut down, when the internal transmission rates are known and are under control, we can re-open our borders. Then we can test every visitor to Barbados – before they leave the arrivals hall.
Five, start including the many highly qualified Barbadians who are willing to help, rather than just the BLP faithful. There are so many examples I could cite, but I will include one.
Harrison Point’s buildings were built over 60 years ago. It is very easy to mistakenly use current construction materials, that can react badly with old construction. Renovating such buildings requires specialist engineering advice to avoid foreseen high maintenance issues.
We made a $30M error by demolishing the 6-storey NIS building (which we could have used now), apparently because someone did not understand construction methods in the 1970s. To prevent a similar blunder, I offered an unlimited supply of free specialist engineering advice.
A truly national plan would accept such an offer – but they rejected it. If they continue to only listen to their most partisan political supporters, then the only plan that they can develop is another political plan.

My lord, if you ever start to gain traction in this political sphere I will walk the streets of Barbados to keep you out!

Did your God teach you to stand up and speak truth to power or did he teach you to be a grovelling wimp?????

  • This is real, listen to those who are on the front lines seeing all of this in real time..

“The grim new figures offered few signs of hope as over 3,500 New Yorkers have died from the virus, about half the national death toll.

More than 10,000 people tested positive in the past 24 hours, a new record high. About 60% of those new infections were in New York City.

The increase in cases is strongest on Long Island, which now accounts for about a quarter of the new infections, he said.”

“From the living room window of her Brooklyn apartment, Alix Monteleone watched the team of workers assemble the morgue in stages over the weekend. First, they parked the refrigerated trailer along the curb, a white box about the size of a large shipping container. Then, they built a wooden ramp to allow hospital staff to wheel the bodies inside. Finally, on Monday, the workers erected a wall of panels, thin and white, to stop passersby from staring or getting too close to the dead.

After that, the gawkers mostly went away. But Monteleone, a 28-year-old event planner from Long Island, kept up her vigil from the third-floor window.

“I spend my entire day like this,” she says, propping her elbows onto the back of her couch and looking out toward the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, the hospital across the street. “I still can’t believe what I’m seeing.”

I would say this virus has brought to the forefront 2 critical issues.

One would be the inability to deal with a crisis in a manner that does not encourage panic with regard to supermarkets and adequate notice of closure.

Secondly our dependence on imported food and the lack of information on alternatives. When I say that what I mean is this. We were told farms will be open but who and where are these small farms located? Why couldn’t Mr Benn have published a list of his registered members with their addresses and contact numbers, in conjunction with the ministry of agriculture in the media?

Then the reference to small shops. Who decides what a small shop is? Is it under a certain square footage? If I have a shop in St George say of 1500 sq ft, am i a small shop or a minimart? Is the public to drive from one place to another to see if they are deemed a small shop and open? Also what analysis was done to see if in a 2 mile radius of Massy warrens for example, they were enough of these outlets to cater to the demand that would arise from the closure of the supermarket in Warrens along with Pricemart and Cost u Less?

We need in future to have a better plan. That way we can make I public statement and stick to it, hence avoiding what occurred yesterday when panic and chaos took over.

i want to live out the rest of my life in Bim. i have traveled enuff. i have struggled and earned enuff. i have chosen to retire young. my children are educated and can take care of themselves and even if they cant, they will learn to or pay the consequences. it is time for me to pack it in and return to the land of my birth. plus i want to spend sometime with my mother before she packs it in. she did a lot for me and she sacrificed a lot for me. i pensioned her off from the time i had a steady job in the UK. but i also have an unattached in Blightey, push comes to shove.

this govt is a bunch of talkers who without MAM to mamaguy bajans would struggle badly. they have mishandled the latter parts of the COVID response. at first i praised them becos they appear to have a workable plan but i dont admire people who cant pivot when a plan is not going right. and they didnt.

i will maintain there should have been no stage 2 in light of what Italy suffered. and the vacillation over the closure of the supermarkets was the last straw. honesty how do you close supermarkets for 14 days and on such short notice? why not with the management of supermarket implement security measures to combat overcrowding, panic buying and social distancing?

the guy Carter’s fall back position is that this is new for everyone. yes,it is, generally speaking, but there is enuff info out there from countries which have gone thru this stage of COVID to inform us. so that is just an excuse for the blunders.

Trump has ordered US manufacturer 3M to ship all of its PPE’s to the US and bypass its next door neighbor (and closest friend) Canada. According to the Germans the US has hijacked a shipment of N95 masks destined for the Berlin Police and shipped them to the US. Even fellow travelers like Premiers Ford in Ontario and Kenney in Alberta say they are disgusted by Trump’s actions. They should adopt the motto “Lord help me to know my friends, my enemies I will take care of”.

In Trump’s eyes Bim is a shithole country, why would he go out of his way to help us out if he won’t even help his neighbor and NATO allies.

Grenville, its time to stop groveling.

The latest persons diagnosed are a Barbadian man, 82, who returned from overseas and his 73-year-old wife; a 58-year-old British female, who arrived from overseas; a 37-year-old Barbadian male, who came into contact with an infected person, and a 46-year-old Barbadian male whose case is still being investigated to identify the source of contact.

There are now 26 men and 25 women in isolation.

Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Anton Best, said today that aggressive contact tracing continues in order to identify all those who may have come into contact with these patients.”

I admire you. As I said, my retirement plan was to live (and be buried) in Barbados and only return to the UK for important engagements. I am not a big traveller. But when push came to shove I had to weigh the pros and cons: racism vs incompetence; good medical care vs a gamble; proper consumer and financial regulation vs a corrupt regulatory system. I also like the conversations with my friends and former colleagues. No shouting; no vulgarity; no aggression; just civilised and forceful; and an informed media – rational and balanced.
In the end I thought I would take my chances with racism. My parents are dead and my brother and sister live outside the country. Apart from friends and cousins, all of whom I love, there is very little to attract me apart from memories and the people in the Ivy.

We should stick to the official facts. In the Caribbean and Africa, the number of infected people is growing only linearly at a low level. In the UK and US, the numbers are exploding exponentially.

Your panic therefore raises the question whether you are not writing from NYC or London and therefore you are an enemy agent to undermine our government.

  • We should all fall on the floor and kiss Mia’s feet, because we have the plague totally under control. Our government is doing something almost superhuman. Now it pays off that we have almost 30 ministers.

For centuries, they have been telling us that everything that looks somehow African is inferior and bad. Especially the DLP. Now the people see the truth. In the end, our Barbadian population will laugh at the plague, while the whites in the USA and UK mourn hundreds of thousands of deaths.

This reminds me of something: What is Donville “Streaming” Inniss actually doing? Is he stuck in the New York slaughterhouse or has he managed to crawl into his Florida estate? Is the man even alive? His behaviour is so typical for the DLP. While Mia, as a great captain, remains in extreme danger with her people, the elite of the DLP is creeping away with the whites.

Instead of constantly panicking about the USA and UK, we should look at the medical superpowers in Asia (Taiwan and South Korea) and Europe (Germany because of the low mortality). Why should we panic about USA or UK? If you have some common sense left, you know that the health system of both countries is worse than in Central Africa, South America or Central Asia.

USA and UK are history. The Corona plague reveals that these two shit holes are crumbling inside. The supremacy of the white Anglo-Americans is over. They cannot even save themselves. They are failed states.

I am sure that Mia Mottley and Dr Best are looking to South Korea, Taiwan and Germany to overcome the crisis. They should avoid anything that looks, smells or feels anything like the USA or UK.

CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Friday revealed what he now fears about his coronavirus infection as he delivered another daily update on his condition.

Cuomo, speaking with CNN colleagues Anderson Cooper and Dr. Sanjay Gupta, said he now worried about how long the illness would last and for how long he’d have to remain quarantined in the basement of his family home.

“My fear is that I’m going to get through this and then I’m going to get something else, these superinfections you guys talk about, like pneumonia or something like that, and I’ll have another 10 days,” explained Cuomo, who announced his diagnosis earlier this week.

“That’s my fear, now, like how will I handle that?” he added. “How will I handle another three weeks of this? That’s what I try to not focus on because it scares me.” He also repeated his concern about infecting other family members.

Cuomo described himself as currently feeling like a “dead weight all day long,” saying he is so lethargic that “I can stare outside and an hour and a half goes by,” while profuse sweating had forced him to change his clothes seven times a day.

“It’s a really surreal existence,” he added. “I’m not bored because I’m barely aware of what’s going on.” On Thursday, Cuomo described enduring “wicked phantasmagorical experiences that are not dreams” including one involving his late father.

“BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — The British casualty ship RFA Argus, has set sail for the Caribbean ahead of this year’s hurricane season to assist with the response to the COVID-19 pandemic across the region.

Although the vessel’s deployment to the Caribbean had been scheduled for the hurricane season, she will now be able to play a part in ensuring the UK Government is ready to support the overseas territories during the pandemic..

As Royal Navy sailors and Royal Marines continue to stand ready to assist the United Kingdom in its efforts to defeat the pandemic at home, the support ship left Devonport on Thursday, to cross the Atlantic and head south for the Caribbean.

RFA Argus ship’s company, consisting of both Royal Fleet Auxiliary and Royal Navy personnel, will rise to this challenge. We understand that there are people in need in the UK Overseas Territories who require our support,” said commanding officer Captain Terence Barke”

You should look on the bright side of the situation: At least we’re using less foreign currency than usual these days. The tourists won’t be coming back so soon. If the plague breaks out again next winter, we will be financially ruined for good. The population now at least has the opportunity to train for the time of hardship when the foreign currency supply is completely depleted.

Look at northern Italy. Tens of thousands of Chinese work in the textile industry there. Tens of thousands have visited China for the European and Chinese New Year celebrations. Near Milan there is even an airport where these Chinese can enter illegally and without passport control.

Anyone who now wonders why the Wuhan plague has hit Italy the hardest is turning a blind eye. Or look at Iran. The Middle East country with the closest ties to China and the highest death toll.

A similar fate would befall us if Barbados continued to engage in Chinese debt bondage. We already have a visa agreement with China, so we cannot trace who is bringing the killer virus to us. Any further agreement with China will worsen the situation at our expense.

I realized you haven’t responded to my question, so I’ll make a comment based on the assumption your 5:40 PM comments are in response to the CMC article posted at 1:33 PM re the UK ships “heading to the Caribbean.”

I note with interest the article states:

(a). “Although the vessel’s deployment to the Caribbean had been scheduled for the hurricane season, she will now be able to play a part in ensuring the UK Government is ready to support the overseas territories during the pandemic.”

(b). “RFA Argus ship’s company, consisting of both Royal Fleet Auxiliary and Royal Navy personnel, will rise to this challenge. We understand that there are people in need in the UK Overseas Territories who require our support,” said commanding officer Captain Terence Barke.”

I’ll ‘ask’ you to pay particular attention to the term “OVERSEAS TERRITORIES” in both paragraphs above.

The UK’s overseas territories in the Caribbean are British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Montserrat, Anguilla, Bermuda and Turks & Caicos. These islands are self-governing territories, with their own constitutions, but are considered to be under UK sovereignty, but not a part of the UK. Under article 73 of the United Nations Charter, the UK has an obligation to
provide for the well being of their inhabitants.

I hope you understand ‘where I’m coming from’ and put ‘two and two together.’
