Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to soak up the resources for both under developed and developed countries. At the time of posting this blog the global medical community has been unable to inform about a vaccine. The blogmaster read the perspective of a leading Australian virologist recently where she opined that the world will have to live with the virus, in fact it will become as accepted as the Flu.

The disruption caused by COVID-19 will impact service based economies like Barbados and others in the reason where it hurts, in the breadbasket. One could rehash old arguments about the folly of putting all our eggs in one basket. If we are to work hard to move from the unsustainable position we find ourselves, we have to do more to shift our over reliance on tourism. Government’s current investment pipeline has signaled there are no immediate or medium term plans to modify the economic engines firing the economy.

If there ever was an opportunity to message our leaders there is an urgent need to reorder how we do business, it is now.

COVID-19
Since this news alert Italy is virtually on lock down. Thanks John A for always feeding the blogmaster with important information.

The local authorities based on public announcements and news coverage have been rolling out awareness campaigns, bumping up screening at ports of entry, building health infrastructure and leading discussions at the regional level to ensure a regional COVID-19 approach. Given the pandemic nature of COVID-19, it seems a matter of time before Barbados reports its first case. The biggest challenge for Barbados and service based economies is the fatalistic impact disruptions to global supply chains will bring.

  1. There were three judgments;

One was the plague on the people.

    Exodus 32:35
And the Lord struck the people with a plague because of what they did with the calf Aaron had made.

Another judgment inflicted when Moses sent the Levites to kill those who participated in the sin of the Golden Calf.

    Exodus 32:28
The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died.

The third judgment was when Moses burnt the Golden Calf to dust and spread it over the water where the Israelites were drinking from. Those who desired the Golden Calf didnโ€™t wake up in the morning.

    Exodus 32:20

And he took the calf the people had made and burned it in the fire; then he ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it.

The Golden Calf is a symbol of the dependency on the material world. The Erev Rav* were desperate when they didnโ€™t see Moses back from the mountain with new โ€˜magicโ€™ tools that they experience in Egypt.
They went immediately to create their own โ€˜godโ€™ made out of gold, a material that expresses the Left and desire. As with every material, its state is temporary and can be broken down and disappear into dust.

The world is experiencing nowadays a fight against an evil Coronavirus that disrupts every aspect of our lives. Rich and poor people, celebrities, politicians or forgotten homeless in a dark alley, may all be affected equally by this virus.
The lack of faith in God rush people to embrace their โ€˜goldโ€™ by accumulating food at home and sell their investment in stocks etc.

If a person gets sick and on his deathbed, he realises that all his โ€˜goldโ€™ doesnโ€™t worth another moment of life.
Those with faith know that elevated life begins for them at the time of death.

(*) Erev Rav ‘mixed multitude’ was a group that included Egyptians and others who had joined the Tribes of Israel on The Exodus. According to Jewish tradition, they were accepted by Moses as an integral part of the people.

  2. The rich are the ones who has the most to loose
The poor has practiced for years the tool of survival.
if the supply chain becomes increasingly broken hard to imagine a rich person having to resort to the same mechanisms which the poor used for years to survive

  3. Reported that 500 test kits should be on island on Monday with more to come.

  4. I dont know why Paul Gibson and Atherley believe they are getting away with promoting Weatherhead with his racist tendencies into the lives of the Black majority but they can rest assured that they are not getting away with this clear disrespect to the Black majority. They can also asured that promoting racists on the island ends with this dangerous government who are hellbent on selling their own people into slavery in UK…

.Atherley you dont stand a chance. It’s bad enuff you weak willed, mentally compromised black faces have destroyed generations of your own people for minorities, you will not continue the trend in your even weaker state.

That party is going nowhere with that known liability. It is not as though people on the island dont know who he and his family are and what they do. To continue to push him in front of the majority population as a potential leader is disrespectful and insulting and show what little regard those Black people in that party have for their own people and their own history. There are not enough minorities on the island to vote any of you in, just because he is there and you believe him to be some prize. Well those who do the electing knows that he is no prize, The problem with too many seeking leadership on the island, they have no respect for their own, quick to criminalize their own people, but even quicker to embrace known criminals from other groups and readily forgive them their wickedness to Black people and got the nerve to push them into leadership roles, but see no problem helping them destroy Black lives.

The island will continue to go nowhere with that backward and self destructive, self defeating philosophy which is not based in logic nor intelligence but in inferiority complexes and mental weaknesses. The electorate has to start punishing those seeking leadership who are thus weakminded and potentially dangerous to the majority, there is no progress for the people in these useless decades old behaviors, that has already brought decades of dependency and economic destruction for generations of the majority and island.

One only need look at the disparity in wealth and lack of opportunites for the same population who fund everything on the island and have for the centuries. Then this wannabe believes he has some right to say that Black people’s lives are less important than a bunch of infected tourists and still these clowns for black people in that party are promoting a clear racist as though that is normal behavior, continuing a pattern just like the other 2 toxic governments who have always promoted dangerous thieves and racists over the people who elected them. They clearly have no self respect and are not suitable to lead a majority black population. They all need new lives and training in how to put Black people first and be more balanced as it relates to how they treat their own people in comparison to how they genuflect, bow and scrape to the other tiny groups who ironically have been living off the backs of the Black majority population for far too long, commit any number of crimes, but are quick to show their disrespect and racist tendencies to the same people without whom they would all starve.

  6. โ€ข Let me get down to the typical BU blogger level again and have some fun in the rum shop

here are the opinions of others
    โ€ข
โ€ข This is a huge hoax fomented by the lame-stream media complicit with the DNC and NWO globalists. Look at the Swine flu in 2009-10, nothing like these measures were taken despite in the USA, 60 million were infected, 300,000 were hospitalized, 13,000 died. Why wasn’t it all hyped up like now? Who was president? Hmmmm….

Agree 100% in meantime, common sense should prevail! Take vitamins, rest when should and hygiene. This is fear mongering at it’s finest.

Take one part widespread social chaos, add a liberal dose of fear of death, then add the Dem-controlled media fanning the flames, and you get a population ready to bow down to the government as their savior. This is the oldest trick in the Socialist/Communist/Democrat playbook. If the media were doing their job, we’d have the facts and half the country wouldn’t be gripped with fear.

HOAX. This virus is no more deadly than any other that we had, as a matter of fact STARS, HIV,were and are killers. This all came about because President Donald Trump inflected heavier tariffs against China and other countries which we deserve because we are they are not paying heir fair share. China is afraid that other countries will follow suit.
Now if that’s not enough, throw in the those criminal politician in our government with their special interest deals for making money and control that would love to take down President Donald Trump and even some who would love to take America down. For those who don”t like the president because of his personality, I don’t always agree with everything that he says, but he wasn’t voted in to be a nice guy or an entertainer which at times he is. Get over it. If President Donald Trump did nothing else at least he exposed more political corruption and waste in our government AND THOSE living in the swamp.
    and there’s your smoking gun

Why is it called corona when it should be called china or woohan virus, isn’t that where it came from?
The disease we should all fear is the deep state and globalists.

Right on, it is all a political manover to unseat Pres. Trump, a senior citizen

    Total agreement.

  7. The timeline of the two developments โ€” impeachment and coronavirus โ€” is shocking, and reveals the true cost of hyper-partisanship.

January 11: Chinese state media report the first known death from an illness originating in the Wuhan market.
January 15: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) holds a vote to send articles of impeachment to the Senate. Pelosi and House Democrats celebrate the โ€œsolemnโ€ occasion with a signing ceremony, using commemorative pens.
January 21: The first person with coronavirus arrives in the United States from China, where he had been in Wuhan.
January 23: The House impeachment managers make their opening arguments for removing President Trump.
January 23: China closes off the city of Wuhan completely to slow the spread of coronavirus to the rest of China.
January 30: Senators begin asking two days of questions of both sides in the presidentโ€™s impeachment trial.
January 30: The World Health Organization declares a global health emergency as coronavirus continues to spread.
January 31: The Senate holds a vote on whether to allow further witnesses and documents in the impeachment trial.
January 31: President Trump declares a national health emergency and imposes a ban on travel to and from China. Former Vice President Joe Biden calls Trumpโ€™s decision โ€œhysterical xenophobia โ€ฆ and fear-mongering.โ€
February 2: The first death from coronavirus outside China is reported in the Philippines.
February 3: House impeachment managers begin closing arguments, calling Trump a threat to national security.
February 4: President Trump talks about coronavirus in his State of the Union address; Pelosi rips up every page.
February 5: The Senate votes to acquit President Trump on both articles of impeachment, 52-48 and 53-47.
February 5: House Democrats finally take up coronavirus in the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia.
For twenty days, from the day the first death from coronavirus was known, Democrats did nothing about it. They were too busy with the presidentโ€™s impeachment trial โ€” a trial Pelosi had delayed unnecessarily for several weeks.

To the extent that they commented on coronavirus at all, it was only to tear up the presidentโ€™s remarks or to call him a racist. They told the nation that he, not coronavirus, was a threat to the national security of the United States.

In the midst of that all-consuming trial, it is remarkable Trump was able to do anything else at all. But he did, and one of the things he did was impose the China travel ban, just one day after the World Health Organization declared coronavirus a global health emergency, and the day before the first victim of the pandemic died outside China.

For his trouble, he was criticized by the World Health Organization and called โ€œhystericalโ€ by his future 2020 rival.

When Republicans warned Democrats that impeachment was a waste of time, a divisive partisan exercise, and a distraction from the real issues facing the country โ€” a lesson Republicans learned the hard way, in Bill Clintonโ€™s impeachment, 21 years before โ€” Democrats ignored them.

Just a few weeks later, THE divided Democrat leaders were taken by surprise by the pandemic, and bickered on cable news, asking why nothing was done sooner.

  10. @ David.

Well we are starting to feel the cancellations now for sure. BA will be coming in from Gatwick this afternoon with at least 50 empty seats from last minute cancellations!

  11. @John A

A pandemic will create such a state. Have you seen the US and Canada to name two adopting aggressive QE?

If we have to face another 2007/8 meltdown may God help us and the region for that matter.

  12. As of early Friday, around 1,700 people in the U.S. have tested positive for coronavirus and 41 people have died.

Many state governors are beginning to recommend or order large gatherings to be canceled, and several states including Ohio, Maryland, Oregon, New Mexico, Michigan, Kentucky, and the District of Columbia have closed all public schools in the state. Many colleges and universities have gone to online-only instruction for a number of weeks or the rest of the spring semester.

A previous pandemic, H1N1, or โ€œswine flu,โ€ killed 18,000 Americans in 2009, but then-President Barack Obama did not declare a national emergency until after 1,000 Americans had already died. Furthermore, large-scale shutdowns did not happen in that case, even after thousands of deaths.

  13. The economy has already melted down

There are plenty ostriches still having their heads buried in sand

Neither has the international medical profession
Every day the news gets dire as to how the virus is spread
News with negative consequences leaving people hopeless and living with imaginations of fear beyond hope

David, I fully agree with you that “…we not turn this topic into the usual shouting match read Trump vs anti Trump?”.

You also recognize that as much as “social media [can] help people understand the challenges we have to battle” that it is also used to disseminate falsehoods that create greater challenges.

The questions must be asked why this virus has spiralled so rapidly out of control in many countries and as compared to pass epidemics why the great hyper sensitivity to what many consider to be a normal death rate from a problematic ‘bactetial infection’ like any other of its family!

One must examine why experienced medical practioners simply parrot words rather than delve into the facts and clarify details properly.

This is less about POTUS but about a rabid mindset of partisanship (liberal v conservatives; nationalists v globalists; Dems v Bees…whatever) that is becoming dangerously entrenched and forming this stupid back and forth silliness here but very serious death and mayhem out on the streets.

The Coronavirus as a medical threat is very similiar to all others and we have had recent enough experiences to safely navigate if we are practical…a germ is a germ after all…and no one has informed that this one has shown different or unique characteristics untreatable by known science!

Just making the point that managing our personal health against a virus of this type is NOT an unknown… the political BS is not an unknown either… we can handle both with honesty, transparency and factually real actions!

  16. @Dee Word

    A bit of advice.

  17. The second is that the claim that โ€œactually nothing was done for a long period of timeโ€ is wrong, and the claim that Obama didnโ€™t declare a national health emergency is very misleading. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on April 24, 2009, declared that the containment of swine flu in the United States was โ€œnot very likely.โ€ Two days later, April 26, the Obama administration declared a public health emergency, before any American had been killed by the swine flu โ€” the same step Trump has now taken. A couple days later, Obama asked for and received billions of dollars from Congress to deal with the swine flu

    Source: Washington Post

    From same article

Obama didnโ€™t declare a more drastic national health emergency until six months later, but Trump hasnโ€™t done that either. And that brings up the other key point here: The reason for the less drastic initial response was that the swine flu was significantly less dangerous than todayโ€™s coronavirus.

    “Significantly less dangerous”

    Just the facts

  18. The questions must be asked why this virus has spiralled so rapidly out of control in many countries and as compared to pass epidemics why the great hyper sensitivity to what many consider to be a normal death rate from a problematic โ€˜bactetial infectionโ€™ like any other of its family!

AH THATS THE PROBLEM ITS A โ€˜bactetial infectionโ€™

AC TEACHES THAT BACTERIA MORPH INTO VIRUSES
BUT DPD TEACHES THAT VIRUSES CAUSE โ€˜bactetial infectionSโ€™

NO WONDER THE WORLD CANT COPE WITH THIS MALADY
FOR NEVER HAVE WE SEEN bactetial infectionSโ€™ BEFORE
I HAVE TO INCORPORATE THIS IN MY TEACHING PPTS

RE One must examine why experienced medical practioners simply parrot words rather than delve into the facts and clarify details properly.

ONE WONDERS WHY DEFINITE MEDICAL ILLITERATES simply parrot words THAT SUITS THEM rather than delve into the facts and clarify details properly.

    THESE ARE THE FACTS BELOW

As of early Friday, around 1,700 people in the U.S. have tested positive for coronavirus and 41 people have died.–37 OF WHICH ARE IN WASHINGTON AND CALIFORNIA
    WHY IS THIS ?
CAN THE MEDICAL ILLITERATES EXPLAIN THIS

A previous pandemic, H1N1, or โ€œswine flu,โ€ killed 18,000 Americans in 2009, but then-President Barack Obama did not declare a national emergency until after 1,000 Americans had already died. Furthermore, large-scale shutdowns did not happen in that case, even after thousands of deaths.

    THESE ARE THE FACTS TOO

  19. @ David March 14, 2020 9:25 AM
โ€œA pandemic will create such a state. Have you seen the US and Canada to name two adopting aggressive QE?
If we have to face another 2007/8 meltdown may God help us and the region for that matter.โ€
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The world economy is about to go into another period of ‘extended’ recession.
As a result, service-based vulnerable countries like the tourism-dependent Barbados will be hit rather hard.

The Barbados economy is under โ€œIMF special measuresโ€ so the opportunity to print money (QE), as in the past, without concomitant foreign reserves backing is severely restricted.

The โ€˜BIGโ€™ question is whether- in the light of the current international traveling developments- the government is proactive enough to recognize the serious ramifications the covid-19 pandemic is going to wreak on the Bajan economy and the revenue-earning projections for the 2020-21 fiscal year.

We should soon see if the current administration would be wise enough to shift some of its expenditure focus away from celebratory projects to one of keeping the country afloat and stopping the bellies of its citizens from daily grumblings.

As for Guyana, it should defer its exuberance in celebrating its oil bonanza.
Guyanese ought to see this change in their plans of greed as a warning of the time bomb simmering in the racial hotpot and about to destroy their already divided society.

David, settle from the hyperbole and please clarify: “If we have to face another 2007/8 meltdown may God help us and the region for that matter.”

I know that for folks living the good life in Bim – travelling at will; doing gym, social soirees, have booming business based on our services in tourism and related services and so on- that a big turn down in the economy will be a big deal financially but do you see all that as insurmountable if there is another grave recession!

    Why?

A world recession hurts all…thus everything grinds to a halt… in finance they will deem it a CORRECTION or a long Bull market. In life its a time you may have to reset priorities and a reorder goals.

So yes if your child is at a college in US or UK you may have to suspend her studies if you can’t meet tuition; you may have to very careful manage your home expenses and so on and so forth, but it is doable because invariably deep recessions mean the govt also has to reorder and force changes to support the populace; the govt will also have to support small business with tax holidays, soft loans etc even as it also carefully manages its dwindling Forex .

It will be tough surely but the *”God help us” seems over the top to me.

We are sitting in the freaking lap of luxury compared to our parents and grand parents (us 50+ year olds) they had truly dire moments after big hardships … for the majority of Bajans ours would absolutely not be at that level of deprivation and suffering from another recession!

    That’s my perspective, anyhow.

  38. @WURA-War-on-U March 14, 2020 1:53 AM “…storage much longer than 6 monthsโ€ฆ”

Yams/Dioscorea, not the sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) that Americans erroneously call yams. But true yams store well for months. In my family we used to plant an acre or so and they were our main carbohydrate from January 1 to the end of August. No refrigeration nor processing required. They store well at room temperature. In our former language and in Bajan English the verb yam still means to eat. So when the Europeans make reference to bread that is alien for us. For us we yam (eat) the yams (the delicious, nutricious tuber). I put some yam in a lovely pot of soup I made yesterday. Looking forward to having some warmed over soup for lunch today.

Sweet potatoes, grows easily, but needs a bit more rain than yams. Plenty of varities planted locally. The yellow and orange ones are good cheap sources of Vitamin A.

Cassava, an indigenous crop so grows easily with or without irrigation. I am clearing my beds of weeds right now and planting cassava as I have done for years. Cassava does not store well unless processed, frozen or dried, but the beauty of cassava is that it can be left in the field almost indefinitely and harvested as needed.

    And of course green banana.

The PM has indicated that 750 acres will be returned to production, but I would like to see 7,500 acres returned to the production of these resilient root crops.

  39. Baje asked about my “plantation” and I was going to invite him to bring his private plane so that we can get around my vast acreage quickly, but since the cultivated acreage is only 14 kitchen garden beds each 100 feet long I think that we can do the viewing in 5 seconds or less…but this lot provides more pounds of food than I can consume in a year.

So for those people who turn up their noses at petty agriculture. You are wrong.

We need all kinds of agriculture, big and small.

YOU ARE VERY CORRECT ABOUT “petty agriculture” THERE IS NOTHING PETTY ABOUT IT
14 kitchen garden beds each 100 feet long CAN PRODUCE A LOT OF FOOD
I HAVE WITNESSED THIS ALL MY LIFE IN MY HOMES

  43. “Wuhlaus! Let us hope He doesnโ€™t take a holiday overseas or the virus may slip in!”

Virus don’t need to slip, it can nonchalantly walk in on two legs per perosn from the port, airport or ferdinand and charles.

…read my above post, 3 cruiseliners are now parked at the port as i type, two large ones, those that hold 3 and 4 thousand passengers per ship, and a smaller one.

Divi Southwinds had tourists taken away in an ambulance, so the virus has to reason to slip in, it can walk.

  44. RE Wuhloss an argument for no tests instead of testing,

YES.AND A GOOD ONE TOO BY SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOIUT

UNLIKE YOU I CAN SPEAK WITH AUTHORITY AFTER 40 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN MEDICINE INCLUDING WORKING IN A LAB DOING TESTS

DIAGNOSES ARE GENERALLY MADE ON HISTORY AND SUSPICION..NOT ON TESTS
TESTS MAY OR MAY NOT CONFIRM A DIAGNOSIS. THEY OFTEN DONT.

ONLY MEDICAL ILLITERATES AND THE INFORMED AND THE IGNORANT PRESS AND THOSE WITH VERY SHALLOW THINKING STRESS TESTING

OFF COURSE IN NORTH AMERICA, DRS TREAT TESTS INSTEAD OF TREATING PATIENTS AND THEY MISS A LOT AS A RESULT

RE โ€œDavidโ€™ just suspend any contribution to this blog unless one can prove they are real Microbiologists who read medical journals.

I REPEAT MEDICAL ILLITERATES AND THE INFORMED READ WALL STREET JOURNAL AND THE WASHINGTON POST
SERIOUS DOCTORS MICROBIOLOGISTS ETC READ MEDICAL JOURNALS
    THIS CAN NOT BE REFUTED

@Artax a hearty ๐Ÿ˜‚ re : ‘A few days ago, I raised concerns about LIATโ€™s precautionary measures relative to the COVID 19 virus. … But this seems to be of less importance, since most of us were more taken up with discussing the brilliance and God appointing Donald Trump.”

No bro is not about God’s appointed.

Alas I just lost my full response so rather then retype all that I will write but part and join @Donna’s comment which echos my thoughts as well when she says:

“Like it or not, Donald Trumpโ€™s words and actions affect US ALL. He is NOT irrelevant to most world situations.โ€

Any LIAT decision affects our modest regional economies (which of course are vitally important to businessmen like yourself who use it regularly) but isn’t it also going to be a political decision by the govt shareholders !

Isn’t it going to depend on which countries leave borders open… If they are flying but can’t land in an island for u to do ur business then you will have to do it by phone and teleconference, not so.

So the discussion on LIAT is still a part of the larger discussion on what American Airlines or JetBlue or Virgin is doing… thus what POTUS or Johnson is saying.

It’s as simple and real as that.

@ Dr GP I had a few questions/comments for u too so let me see how succintly clear I can be in this brief retype.

1.Did the Dr Fuchi insult yesterday come from a depth of personal awareness. Were you not previously a ‘superior Superior’ like him being shunted aside by ‘inferior superiors’ !

2.Were u also dismissed as a dime a dozen expert by those inferiors.

Quite instructively amusing to read that comment from you as it conjures an entire gestalt of psychological pieces.

BTW don’t worry to respond to that but do tell the blog why now a purchase of plantation lands was such a bad idea for an experienced farmer like you who planned to use innovative scientific based planting methods with excellent project and logistical planning.

Why would u NOT have succeeded?

    I gone, gone. Lata.

  46. @Silly Woman,
Oh for growing your own food. Nothing beats it. We kept our yams in the cellar and when they dried out, we soaked them overnight in a bucket of water for the next day. Pumpkins kept forever, the crapaud back ones with the thick skins. We made cassava flour and starch. The corn, we stored in a crocus bag and would mill as required. My grandfather was a fisherman and had his own boat. We used to dry fish on the galvanize roof and store it in a card board box. Green banana coo-coo with red herring gravy……oh, la, la. lah.

Now, to the virus. Ottawa is on shutdown with 3 diagnosed cases. The gym closed, my tai chi classes cancelled. My show tomorrow at the National Arts Centre postponed. No news yet on Hamilton. Schools, community centres, libraries closed. People are advised to work from home. All this is causing people to stock pile groceries and of all things toilet paper. steupse.

  47. RE 1.Did the Dr Fuchi insult yesterday come from a depth of personal awareness. Were you not previously a โ€˜superior Superiorโ€™ like him being shunted aside by โ€˜inferior superiorsโ€™ !

FIRST I DIDNT INSULT THE MAN ——-I MADE PERTINENT OBSERVATIONS
YES I WAS shunted aside by โ€˜inferior superiors WHO EVEN NOW REVEAL THEIR INCOMPETENCE

RE Were u also dismissed as a dime a dozen expert by those inferiors. YES INDEED

RE it conjures an entire gestalt of psychological pieces. NOT SO JUST A PRESENTATION OF THINGS THAT HAPPEN IN THE REAL WORLD

I HAVE REALLY ENJOYED THE TRUMP WARD ROUNDS

RE tell the blog why now a purchase of plantation lands was such a bad idea for an experienced farmer like you who planned to use innovative scientific based planting methods with excellent project and logistical planning.

    THATS A LONG STORY SIR

  48. Who wants to take this for a joke that is yall problem, if ya start dropping like flies am sure Ms. Fighting Imperialism would be happy to dig a big hole and drop ya dead asses in…cause then she would not be able to send you to UK as slaves.

    UK deaths nearly doubled overnight.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8112177/Coronavirus-deaths-UK-double-overnight-21.html

“The UK’s coronavirus death rate almost doubled overnight as ten more people died, bringing the country’s total to 21. The dramatic rise in deaths comes as Boris Johnson (left, today chairing a coronavirus meeting at Downing Street) made the decision to ban all mass gatherings and sports events from next weekend. Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England, said the ten who died ‘were in the at-risk groups’.

The total number of cases in the UK leapt from 820 this morning to 1,140 this afternoon. And the rise in numbers comes the day after the World Health Organisation said Europe has become the epicentre of the pandemic. Mr Whitty added: ‘The public should know every measure we are taking is seeking to save lives and protect the most vulnerable. Every single one of us has a role to play in achieving this. If you have a new continuous cough or high temperature, please stay at home for seven days.”
