Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to soak up the resources for both under developed and developed countries. At the time of posting this blog the global medical community has been unable to inform about a vaccine. The blogmaster read the perspective of a leading Australian virologist recently where she opined that the world will have to live with the virus, in fact it will become as accepted as the Flu.

The disruption caused by COVID-19 will impact service based economies like Barbados and others in the reason where it hurts, in the breadbasket. One could rehash old arguments about the folly of putting all our eggs in one basket. If we are to work hard to move from the unsustainable position we find ourselves, we have to do more to shift our over reliance on tourism. Government’s current investment pipeline has signaled there are no immediate or medium term plans to modify the economic engines firing the economy.

If there ever was an opportunity to message our leaders there is an urgent need to reorder how we do business, it is now.

COVID-19
Since this news alert Italy is virtually on lock down. Thanks John A for always feeding the blogmaster with important information.

The local authorities based on public announcements and news coverage have been rolling out awareness campaigns, bumping up screening at ports of entry, building health infrastructure and leading discussions at the regional level to ensure a regional COVID-19 approach. Given the pandemic nature of COVID-19, it seems a matter of time before Barbados reports its first case. The biggest challenge for Barbados and service based economies is the fatalistic impact disruptions to global supply chains will bring.

  2. It keeps getting grimer and grimer and will continue until it peaks and runs it’s course. Russia is likely the smartest in all of this, from China went south with Corona, they shut down everything….to make it worse it has mutated and very early….which means it knows how to survive…by instinct.

if it keeps mutating to get around manmade barriers, GP will get to heaven much sooner on his rapture that he continues to gush so much about.

“The deadly coronavirus mutated to get around the quarantine in Wuhan, according to Chinese scientists.

A second strain showed mild or no symptoms in the early stages, meaning people were released from the lockdown and infected others.

It comes as the epicentre of the crisis shifted from Asia to Europe, where 36,929 people have tested positive.”

  3. @Dame Bajans & Simple
    Great memories.
I am planning to return to the island within two or three years and am thinking of taking up agriculture. I can remember how to plant things like corn, nuts and peas (simple, yes) but my memories of yam, sweet potatoes, cassava, and eddoes is vague. I think potatoes was done by the vine.

I remember getting bush for bush tea (at least two types of bushes), i forgot the name of one and would not recognize circe bush if I was drowning in it.

I may have to come here when I really start to plant.

Unable to follow the discussion/arguments on BU so I have been mainly quiet.

  4. Border patrol reportedly stopped hundreds of Chinese immigrants from entering the country due to the travel ban put in place by President Trump and his administration.

Since officials first reported the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan in late December and the United States imposed a travel ban for those entering from China, Border Patrol agents have detained 333 Chinese nationals attempting to enter the United States illegally, according to Department of Homeland Security data obtained by Fox News.

The southern border remains a primary focus of the Trump administration, which sees the area as high risk and a gateway for COVID-19 to spread in the U.S.

Baje asked about my “plantation” and I was going to invite him to bring his private plane so that we can get around my vast acreage quickly, but since the cultivated acreage is only 14 kitchen garden beds each 100 feet long I think that we can do the viewing in 5 seconds or less…but this lot provides more pounds of food than I can consume in a year.
So for those people who turn up their noses at petty agriculture. You are wrong.
We need all kinds of agriculture, big and small.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Not so silly after all!!

If it does reach the stage when people stay in, those in condos, matchbox houses etc will probably be forced out to forage for food.

Might not be a good idea to advertise because you may get some desperate, hungry visitors.

14 beds will be gone in a flash!!

STAY AWAY FROM THE “CIRCE” BECAUSE THIS HAS BEEN SHOWN BY PROF BRASS AT UWI MONA TO CAUSE VENO OCCLUSIVE DISEASE OF THE LIVER. THIS WAS AN EPIDEMIC IN JAMAICA IN THE 50’S

  7. At 63 and in the age group most prone to be killed by the Corolla Virus, I can’t see the benefit of travelling to a medical centre/doctor to wait for a test among a concentration of people who probably have got the Corolla virus, particularly when we are being told that it is extremely contagious.

We are also being told that every person who has died in America due to the Corolla virus has been of a person over 50.

I have no medical training and can figure out something as simple as this!!

Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof!!

  8. No, I don’t overreact. This is only one of MANY times you have implied that we should not be interested in Trump. You often say, quite forcefully, you don’t care about Trump or Obama. That is your right. Nobody tries to persuade you otherwise. But I say, quite forcefully, that I do care. That is my right. Besides, many people on BU live in the USA. And apart from the impact Trump, by virtue of his position, has on the world, including Barbados, it is also very interesting as a study of human nature. There are many lessons to be learnt here, invaluable lessons.

  9. Corolla virus – that is the one you get from driving a Toyota Corolla???? So that one started in Japan?

  10. @TheoG

I followed the link re the Minister complaining about “malicious” bajans and “unpatriotic” Bajans on social media while calling on the law to “react to such cases”.

Don’t the Police have enough on their plate? Did those “unpatriotic” Bajans threaten someone? Ms. Mottley showed some insight when she removed the Police Dept. from this individual’s oversight. No one heard a peep from him when social media was lambasting the previous Gov’t but say something negative about the present Gov’t and Bajans are “unpatriotic”. This is how arrogancy creeps in, politicians believe they have sinecure and they are like asbestos (fireproof)

  11. @Dame Bajans March 14, 2020 12:37 PM ” We kept our yams in the cellar and when they dried out, we soaked them overnight in a bucket of water for the next day. Pumpkins kept forever, the crapaud back ones with the thick skins. ”

You have to be a genuine, old fashioned bajan country gal.

Don’t know the last day I heard someone refer to “crapaud back” pumpkins, but I know exactly what you mean. The ones with the very rough mottled skin…like the skin of a crapaud. They had nce, thick, tight dry flesh so that they kept a long time without refrigeration.

I planted some pumpkins inrecent years, but last year the monkeys murdered my crop. I’ve discovered though that the monkeys don’t like “stake manure” I’ve built a relationship with a neighbouring cow farmer and I’ll surround my pumpkin vines with some of that. The pumpkins are going to be cooked anyhow so I don’t see a problem. I wear gloves and boots, long pants and shirts at least to my elbow so I should be good.

There are people out there who want to make you feel that you are an idiot, and don’t understand the economics of farming if you are farming a lot less than the size of Texas. But I watched my parents who were not idiots, because how do idiots a successful healthy family in the midst of enormous hardship?

Another good thing about farming is that other farmers once they see that you are making an effort they will help you oout with plantings, advice, some of their mature crops etc. Farmers are likely some of the most generous people in the world.

Some time agowhen I was absent for a while and two of my 10 fot beds were empty another small farmer planted two kinds of sweet potatoes there. Of course when they matured you know who got the first set.

My wealthy foreign mortgage company has NEVER missed me so much that they decided to give me a free $20.

  12. Had some sweet soup last week. You people are making me hungry for some more. have all the provisions so here I go!

Talking about memories- Cynthia Wilson’s book “Whispering of the Trees” is a stark remindEr of how far we have moved away from being self-sufficient. Her grandmother had a veritable cellar of produce she grew and they made virtually everything they needed from scratch. Every time I read it it makes me shame.

Oh the time and money i have wasted! No more! The example needs to be set for my son.

    No time like the present.

    Like DPD, I gone!.

  13. Leadership.

“There will be no Budget presentation this year as Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and her Cabinet focus on the threat of the Covid-19, now spreading across the world.

Yesterday, Mottley said she was comfortable that the administration was doing all it could not only for Barbados, but for the region, as she is chair of CARICOM and the OECS is a major trading partner.”

  14. THERE ARE SOME ILLITERATES HERE AND THERE MOCKING THE POTUS RE THE TIME IT WILL TAKE TO ACQUIRE A VACCINE

BUT LOOK AT THIS…….synthetic biologists have directed their full attention to this issue, with the aim of developing a cutting-edge vaccine.

Companies have already started testing vaccines against the COVID-19-causing virus. However, the National Institutes of Health and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation believe that scientists can do a great job, as they’re working to develop an effective vaccine. The new coronavirus keeps spreading on a wide scale. Scientists were able to eradicate the earlier SARS coronavirus, but Covid-19 might require a next-generation approach. Vaccines take a long time to develop and manufacture. They might even become obsolete in case the virus quickly evolves. Fortunately, synthetic biologists have directed their full attention to this issue, with the aim of developing a cutting-edge vaccine.

IT MIGHT BE SOONER THAN THE MORONS THINK

THIS TYPE OF BIOTECHNOLOGY HAS REGENERATED BOTH CHEMICAL PATHOLOGISTS AND BIOCHEMISTS

  15. @ David.

By Wednesday we should be hearing the final decision on cruise ship arrivals for the balance of the season too.

Wunna stop worrying bout Trump we got major issues to deal with over the next 2 weeks here.

  16. “Yesterday, Mottley said she was comfortable that the administration was doing all it could not only for Barbados,.”

oh really, so why are 3 cruiseliners parked up at the port, did they think that no one would notice, they are not exactly invisible and the island is not filled with blind people.

Theo…don’t mind those frauds, the maliciousness and unpatriotic behavior is coming from the leaders by not telling the taxpayers on the island what those cruise liners are doing there on a bright Saturday morning while the local citizens are going about their business of stocking up food so they are not too exposed… or mentioning that they took 2 potential carriers from the Divi South Wind hotel by Defense Force ambulance …ya don’t get more malicious or unpatriotic than that..

  17. For Theo. Plant sweet potatoes by using a piece of the vine/slips. Use large healthy looking pieces, about as long as from the tip of your index finger to the crook of your elbow. I cover most of it with dirt but leave a leave a few leaves exposed to the sun.

Plant yams by using a piece of yam about as big as your clenched fist. Plant it with the brown side down. Cover well. Yams may take up to a month to germinate, especially if it is dry as it often is in Barbados in late April/early May. but don’t worry, they will germinate.

Plant cassava by using pieces of the cassava sticks/the branches, about 12 to 14 inches long. Use nice fat healthy looking pieces. Lay flat and cover the whole thing with dirt. Cassava germinates fairly quickly in about a week or two.

Pigeon peas are very resilient too. They can be grown on land otherwise felt to be “rab” land, rocky and with poor quality soil.

  18. @John A
Wunna stop worrying bout Trump we got major issues to deal with over the next 2 weeks here
    ++++++++++
We are not living in a hermitically sealed dome, events in the rest of the world have an influence on us, where did the instructions about the cruise ships originate?

Just read that the US is placing travel restrictions on the UK and Ireland, Canada has advised its citizens about taking non- essential trips abroad and if they do they should be prepared to isolate themselves for two weeks on their return. Last week I was warning friends about the March break influx about to engulf the island, will it materialize? We have to wait and see.

  19. This is the unknown, that will keep this ongoing.

“Japan is reporting its first case of a person becoming reinfected with the coronavirus after showing signs they had fully recovered, according to Reuters.

Osaka’s prefectural government confirmed Wednesday a woman working as a tour bus guide tested positive for coronavirus for the second time after developing a sore throat and chest pain. The woman, who is said to be in her 40s, first tested positive in late January and was discharged from the hospital on Feb. 1 after showing signs of recovery.

Reuters reports Health Minister Katsunobu Kato said the government would need to monitor the condition of others who were infected and later discharged as health experts investigate testing positive for COVID-19 after an initial recovery.

As much remains unknown about the virus, cases of reinfection have health experts worried that the illness could remain dormant after an apparent recovery.”.

  20. @Silly Woman

You can take a girl out of the country, but not the country out of the girl. You don’t want more country than Bathsheba, St. Joseph. It was so much country, the buses ran only from 6-9 in the morning and 2-6 in the evening. In high school, I was called a country buck. Free medicare and going to a Dr. was non existent. Gully root, sour grass, soursop leaves, cure for all, bay leaves, all boiled in an iron pot and kept on the fire, (fire not stove, that too was non existent) that was our medicine. If you were able to walk and on a bus route, you went to the almshouse. Never went to a Dr. until I had to take medicals to come to Canada.

  21. @ Sargeant, yesterday,

TORONTO — On one of the busiest travel days of the year, Toronto Pearson International Airport is unusually quiet today due to concerns over COVID-19.

  22. It is very clear that the leaders are the ones malicious and unpatriotic to still have cruise liners in Bridgetown….and never forget the malicious, unpatriotic crime of sending Black slaves from Barbados to UK for 8 pounds an hour, that is their malicious and patriotic.

am sure they will be happy to welcome Royal Caribbean cruise ship too..

“BALTIMORE (WBFF) 82 people tested positive for the flu on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship back to Baltimore.

According to officials with the cruise line, on the February 8-20 voyage of Grandeur of the Seas, medical staff let the CDC know that dozens of guests and crew had flu-like illness or tested positive for influenza A or B and were placed in isolation.

None of the 82 patients met the CDC criteria as a person under investigation for the CDC.

Officials say the CDC did not request coronavirus tests for any of the cases. None of the patients had passed through regions of impact, or been exposed to anyone in the regions of impact, within two weeks of symptom onset.”

  23. @Sargeant

My point is that Trump will do what he thinks is best for the USA and we must be proactive and do what is best for us. We have to accept that this cruise ship season may well end way earlier this year. We must also realise that long stay arrivals will be down as well. What I want is to hear from the MOF is this.

what steps for example will we be taking to cut government spending over the next 3 quarters?

What measures will be introduced by the ministry of agriculture to promote the immediate planting of short term crops with maturity dates say of 3 month or less?

What measures has the Minister of Health put in place for designating extended opening hours and on site testing for the virus at the polyclinics ?

In other words talk to me about what you doing here in terms of a proactive approach. Let Trump do what he wants and remember that elections in the USA could be won or loss on how this virus is dealt with there. Look at what happened when he was accused of down playing the virus? He came back after reviewing the market response and shut Europe out. In other words don’t expect logic to reign up there in an election year.

  24. @John A

Excellent comment, you should post it to the other blog also.

  25. I am sure the Barbados government is following the “new” from North America and planning accordingly.

“The federal government has temporarily barred all cruise ships and ferries that carry more than 500 people, including crew, from docking in Canada until July to protect against the growing COVID-19 pandemic.

In a public address Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that “cruise season is suspended until July.”

  26. @ David.

Can you do it for me please don’t know how to!

  27. Barbados could postpone Cropover and We Gatherin till next year.

@Dr GP sorry but I gotta come back to you bro…y do u deliberately fly in the face of absolutely proper advice from an EXPERT simply to support this self serving narcissis?

You KNOW full well that a primary reason that any new medical cure takes time is due to the NECESSARY regulatory trials and confirmations of possible side effects and all that.

The scientists HAVE to ensure that they cover the bases carefully to avoid a cure that kills Covid19 but then also spikes some other issue… and open themselves to bankrupting lawsuits.

Even if govt expedites the approval process that type of care and testing still HAS to be done.

You know this so why all the BS… POTUS was absurdly optimistic to say 3 months although he obviously knew things were already in place to find a cure … Still was impossible.

I really don’t get your hypocrisy… You would have been just like Dr Fuchi standing behind Trump with ur hands tightly folded across ur chest and angry as hell listening to his BS if Billie or Caddle or any local Health Minister or Tom or Barrow had made such outrageous claims … Yet u come here and defend total BS.

    SMH!

    Anyhow, knock yourself out…

I have a “serious” query for you.

In one of his books on the power of regular bowel cleansing this doctor (name defeats me at moment) suggested that an effective colon cleanse helped the immune systems significantly by removing toxins etc.

He offered for example that a good colon cleanse before travelling to countries with bad water supply was a good way to help minimize intestinal issues along of course with boiling water/using bottled water if u did eat stuff with water impurities.

Simple query : is there any value to his assertions or are u of the school of study which dismisses that as pseudo medicine?

He also was adamant that getting a tonsellictomy was a recipe for major long term problems.

    Lata.

Barbados is definitely open for business. There were lots of tourists around town today. Your question has been answered. I am not particularly worried about some one( including myself coming down with the virus: what I am worried about is the efficacy of the containment effort. As I said there is not much that one can do, until there is a vaccine. until then, it is up to one’s immune system.

  37. @ David.

It seems from what I just learnt that the cruise terminal will be closed from Monday for 30 days to all Cruise Ships! This is for cruise ships only and has nothing to do with cargo vessels.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My old cane cutter buddy says 1/4 lb. if rain around else 1/2lb.

It is the skin that grows shoots and is planted facing down.

The shoots grow downwards from the skin and then curl up to the surface.

Once they break the surface and leaves form, photosynthesis takes over and the sun fuels development.

That’s why I suggested staking yams in the past, to get as much sun as possible.

Roots form and take up whatever moisture is present which further fuels the photosynthesis.

I tried growing some yam peelings (just the skin) last year and they took.

Yams were not so big but will see how they produce as planting material.

  42. Yes, you do over-react at times to the point of being condescending or that you have to prove yourself in this forum. That’s MY opinion.

I’ve NEVER, EVER implied that anyone SHOULDN’T be interested in Trump. That’s your choice.
And, I’ve always given praise to de Pedantic dribbler for the way he handles the Trump fanatics.

However, what I’ll admit to implying is that sometimes many of you ignore important issues to focus primarily on Trump, even if the ‘discussion’ isn’t going in that direction. This has been highlighted by the blogmaster on several occasions.

But, at the end of the day, it comes right down to ‘matters of opinions.’

I have mine and you obviously have yours. But, I will RESPECT yours and won’t TRY to FORCE mine down your throat.

So, to avoid any ‘argument’ that may ensue as a result of my comments, I’ll offer you my sincerest apologies if I’ve offended you in any way.

Again to you@ Dr GP… doc in residence!

Why were (are) officials presuming that asymptomatic individuals were not spreading the virus?

Is that based on established science; science specific to the Covid19 or just a stupid gamble?

2.Is the incidence of the virus so far reported in Bdos mere happenstance of minimal testing, the benefits of our climate acting to dissipate the lingering bacteria… Or as in NY are we possibly sitting on an explosive cluster soon to be exposed?

And where are your virus presentations u spoke of earlier… you are still a curmudgeon of disreputable demeanor but u also still have very informative medical course work so I easily leave your disposition at the door when I review your stuff.

  48. “what I am worried about is the efficacy of the containment effort.”

that is the problem right there, you can’t have containment if you have thousands of tourists wandering around the place and mingling with locals days before you shut down and you dont know who is asymptomatic, infected and spreading the virus everywhere, it takes nearly a month in some cases for the disease to present in some carriers…then calling yaself intelligent and claiming ya “focusing on the threat of covid-19” when ya have thousands of threats walking around the city TODAY and are already nearly a week behind everyone else in shutting down.

It only need one out of thousands of tourists to be a carrier and the whole damn island can be infected.

… this lawyer in New Rochelle, Westchester County…infected a whole damn area and have the place will lit up and loaded..

I repeat…this is a government who is selling their people into slavery in UK, they cannot be trusted in any form..
