Every summer at the Plymouth Brethren Assembly that I attend here in Central Florida, the 16 Sundays in June through September are devoted to one of the men in the church giving a talk on a chosen theme.

Last week on Sweet Sunday Sermon – Enoch,  I submitted  my contribution from the year when the assignment was for contributors to harp on one of the heroes of faith from Hebrews chapter 11. 

Last week on Sweet Sunday Sermon – Enoch, after sharing a few outlines on the book of Hebrews, we demonstrated how to go about presenting the salient features about a Bible character by employing the Biographical Method of Bible Study.

This week on Sweet Sunday Sermon – Caleb’s Inheritance, I have submitted  my contribution from the year when the assignment was to choose an Old Testament event or Bible character, comment briefly thereon, and then relate the lessons gleaned about the Old Testament event or Bible character  to a related New Testament passage.

I therefore  chose my favorite Old Testament Bible character CALEB, and after giving a brief Biography of this Old Testament Bible character surrounding his inheritance, in the second half, I  gave an exegesis (or verse by verse study) of 1 Peter 1:3-5 which discusses THE BELIEVER’S INHERITANCE. Our study this week is therefore entitled CALEB’S INHERITANCE (Joshua 14) & THE BELIEVER’S INHERITANCE (1 Peter 1:3-5).

  • In substance:  it is incorruptible; It will not spoil or go bad. Sin cannot affect it. It will never wear out or get old. Nothing can destroy it.
  • In purity: it is undefiled;
  • In beauty: it is unfading”  It will not lose its beauty. It is not like metal that stops shining. Nor is it like a light that goes out.
  • In security: it is reserved God keeps this inheritance safe in heaven for each person who believes his promises
     

Those who are interested in Bible Biography and the concept of spiritual inheritance should fine the exegesis of the 1 Peter passage enlightening.

Before you post on these Sunday Sermon blogs, maybe you should like the Bereans in Acts 17:11, first consult the Word of God, to see if the things here said are so, by  studying the Scriptures diligently and inductively as enjoined in 2 Timothy 2:15 & Nehemiah 8:8 especially emphasizing reading the text literally and reading the text in its context so that you can be sure to keep context “king”, so that you will be able to competently comment on the commentaries (including the one you are reading here on BU)

Do so in dependence on The Teacher, the Holy Spirit (not me), Who Jesus promised would guide believers  into all truth (John 16:13). This way you are more likely to benefit from the discourse.

In the last 50 years I have heard teens and even some very uneducated elderly men give good and accurate thoughts on passages of the Word of God.

You might also even consult reputable Bible commentaries, or sermons or other resources, so that we may have a reasonably useful discussion. If you do not like the Bible, just stay away. That is much better than professing yourself to be wise and only proving yourself to be a fool as taught in Romans 1:22.

    Simple Simon,

    All these innocent children, supposedly condemned by the loving and just God was the catalyst that sent me up to Codrington College to see if my rejection of such ideas was shared.

    Well that and the silent women, submissive wives, obedient slaves verses and all that codswallop didn’t sound like the God that introduced Himself/Herself to me when I needed a lifeline.

    What ! got up there went even further than where I was at. Had to do so much re-calibrating my head was in a tailspin.

    And Miller might be surprised to know that it was there that I started to entertain the idea that African “mumbo jumbo” was not to be dismissed.

    PS. Blood and gore is in the male DNA. Even my peaceful son who can’t see any sense in real war loves to watch mock wars on television to the exclusion of all else. Loves the violent video games The gorier the better. Seems like he has evolved past the real thing but carries the remnants still. The mock war allows him to satisfy his instinctive attraction to a fight. Now I understand that I no longer limit his choices.

    I. If, then, light and gladness are to be looked for in Christian life, it is important to remember that they are growths, and that, as such, THEY CARRY WITH THEM A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF CONCEALMENT AND DELAY.

    Let us consider some illustrations of this. God hides away light and gladness in certain things which, for the time, give no hint of what is within, even as the rough acorn gives no visible promise of the grandeur and leafage of the oak. And here be very careful to note that when God gives us these seeds, He expects us to look for our light in them. None the less, because the acorn is hard and rough, must you look for your oak in your acorn. You will not find it by turning away to something smoother and softer.

    One of the very first things to which God introduces us on our entrance into His kingdom is duty. God knows that in all duty there is light which faithful doing will bring out. Often, however, He shows us very little or none of the light and promise, but only the dark furrows of duty in which the light is sown: and He says to us, “Your work lies up and down along those furrows, to keep them free from weeds, to drive away the birds, to keep the earth loose, and to watch and wait until the light shall appear.”

    The same truth appears in the providences of God. They are full of light, but it is sown light. We understand well enough how God hides the diamond and the topaz in the dark and overlays them with hard and coarse crusts; how He shuts up the crystal in the heart of the rough geode; and we doubt not that human skill and labour can bring them forth from their wrappings and make them blaze in the coronets of kings.

    Why will we limit these facts to nature merely, to God’s economy on its lower side, and not see that God carries up the same facts to a higher level, and applies the same method in His spiritual economy, and conceals light and joy beneath the hard incrustations of sorrow and pain? All of you remember the story so graphically told by the Scottish poet, of the wizard buried in the abbey aisles with a lamp upon his breast; and how, when the stone was removed after many years, the light from that lamp blazed up and lighted the tomb and the magic volume in the dead hand.

    So it is that sometimes we go back after many days to the grave when we buried, as we thought, all the gladness and light of our lives, to find in the hand of the dead a lamp and a lesson-book. A hard providence of God is a seed with a rough and prickly husk, but it is a seed of light, sown by Him who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, and who will shine in His people’s hearts to give the light of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

    The truth applies equally to the process of winning Christian knowledge and faith. We are like children at school. Study and thought and books are full of light to you now; but when you were a child, light came to you under cover of duty, by way of rules and formulas; through labour when you saw more gladness in sport; through strict discipline when you thought that complete freedom would be perfect gladness. Would it be strange if God should deal with you in similar wise in acquiring the knowledge of His truth and will?

    II. But let us look at the other thought — that of DIFFUSION OR DISTRIBUTION.

    Concealment or reserve in God’s economy is with a view to revelation. Christ said, “There is nothing hidden but in order that it should be revealed,” and though, as we have seen, God’s revelations unfold gradually, that very fact results in the distribution of His revelations along the whole line of an individual life or of a nation’s history. That is one aspect of the truth. A grain of wheat is wheat, not only in the full corn, but in the blade and in the ear likewise, and in the growth of the seeds of light they unfold into light all along the way of the upright.

    Though something is hidden, though all godly living includes patient waiting, yet God does not condemn His children to walk in darkness all their days, and only then let in upon them the light of heaven in one overwhelming flood. The perfect day is at the end, it is true, but still the path of the just shineth more and more.

    The word is a lamp unto the feet in their daily walk. And therefore the hard duties and the hard providences, while they hide light, yet do not keep in all the light. There is self-denial, for instance. No doubt it will be a good while before it will cease to be hard, or will bring its full reward: but meanwhile the practice of it is not without its gladness and light.

    Take the grace of Hope. Hope has a hard fight for life in some natures; and the climb to even low slope of hopefulness is a distressing one. Yet when one of God’s desponding children does manfully grapple with his despondency and resolutely work his way upward, saying, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? Hope thou in God. I shall yet praise Him” — light breaks in along the line of that struggle.

    Some of you have stood on a rocky platform among the high Alps and watched the coming of dawn. You saw the saffron light deepen behind some monster peak, and soon the first sunbeam appeared above the crest; and as it darted forth, it struck and was flashed back from a great snow-field which blushed and kindled under its touch. Another beam shot over to a cluster of ice-needles, and each one of them became a point of dazzling light. Then a long ray leaped over to that peak, far up in the calm ether, awful in the loneliness of its virgin snow, and the great cone glistened and sparkled over its whole surface, and threw back the light to another peak, and flash answered flash, and the threads of light crossed and twined until the heaving sea of hills was bathed in glory.

    So every Christlike effort, every Christian grace resolutely carried into practice, not only emits light, but multiplies the light at every point where it touches. Faith nerves itself for a timid venture and throws out its one feeble ray toward a hard task or a hard trial or a hard problem; and behold the thing brightens, and in its own brightening throws light on some other duty or trial, on some great snow-field of lonely sacrifice and patience.

    In short, the more faithfully and persistently one addresses himself to doing God’s will, the more points his experience affords from which the goodness and love and faithfulness and power of God are reflected. And these points enlighten each other.

    Each experience takes up the light furnished by the smallest, and reflects and helps to distribute it over the whole area. Righteousness is light and gladness though its way lie through sorrow and sacrifice: and you who are pursuing that road in faith and hope may take this for your comfort that you are going forward to inevitable gladness.

    God has already wrought out great goodness before your eyes; but that is nothing to the goodness which He has laid up for them that fear Him.

    Jesus and His followers explained clearly how such false teachers can be identified. They simply cannot bear any good fruit. So, they typically justify their bad fruit.

    I would think that a Judge when speaking of deceiving oneself would cite I John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. BECAUSE EVERYONE INCLUDING YOUR SELF APPOINTED JUDGE HAS THE SIN NATURE.

    I haven’t even read the exegesis. I am sure it is well presented and in keeping with well known and accepted scholars.

    But I have other well known and accepted scholars who address matters such as discrimination against women. And these issues are of greater importance to me at this point. The exclusive old boys’ club needs to be broken up. You guys are very little different from the Muslims in this regard. Oppressive old farts.

    I threw away terms such as apostasy and heresy when I was freed from religious dogma nearly twenty years ago.

    First, your accusations are false. Yet you keep making them. Therefore, if that is what your religious tradition teaches you, then you can keep it.

    Second, If an unbeliever provides his opinion on spiritual matters, then that is an opportunity for a believer to engage in discussion, and hopefully converge towards the truth. They are not the false teachers and wolves in sheep’s clothing that Jesus and His followers warned believers about.

    Third, your responses generally appear devoid of love. You are squandering a wonderful opportunity that David has afforded you. Your generally rude responses display no fruit of the Spirit whatsoever, and if anything, can cause the name of the Lord to be blasphemed among unbelievers.

    Fourth, do you normally speak to people in the manner that you behave on BU? If no, then why behave so badly here? If yes, then you definitely need to find a denomination that not only teaches you how to study the Word, but how to be a better human being. It is way past time that you grew up.

    The centralized structure of the Anglican Church is un-Biblical, just as the centralized structure of the Roman Catholic Church is un-Biblical.

    Those ideas were ideas for which a person lost his/her life and drove people to leave England and Europe for the New World.

    The Bible became available to all in their language and all read it.

    It drove the Reformation and the exodus from Europe to the New World.

    People wanted to worship God in the way they understood from reading the Bible.

    That’s why Barbados exists, and America, and Antigua and St. Kitts etc etc.

    Each church is supposed to be like a candle that is visible for miles in the dark.

    No diocese, no bishop no centralized control.

    Corrupting the centre kills the whole centralized church.

    But it is impossible to out all the candles in Christendom!!

    So long as there is just one burning, lighting others is easy.

    That’s why the Quakers were here from the late 1640’s and the Puritans before them … and even some Familists.

    That’s why until the late 1700’s and early 1800’s Quakerism predominated until the Anglican Church supplanted it.

    Hi Donna:

    Please note that the Bible teaches that we must all give an account of our behaviour to Jesus. Since He will judge us, we should be familiar with what He expects from us. He has repeatedly explained that He expects us to love each-other.

    Paul will not judge any of us. In His writings, there are some instructions that he believed came from God. There are others which were his personal opinions, formed from his cultural traditions. The issue of women teaching was a cultural tying. Hear Paul.

    “And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.” (1 Tim 2:12)

    Who does not permit a woman to teach? That would be Paul, not Jesus who will judge us at the end of the age. The problem is that some denominations take these obvious cultural practices and make them their doctrines.

    The tragedy is when they try to intimidate others with their Pharisaical attitude because others do not agree with their cultural doctrines. Jesus has already instructed believers not to fear such people. Hear Jesus.

    “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” (Matt 10:16)

    “Therefore do not fear them. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matt 10:26-28)

    Did you know that Silence was the first name chosen by some Quaker families for a daughter?

    Yet, Quaker thinking made women the spiritual equal of men.

    Quite apart from their other ideas, this one got them in real trouble!!

    Psalm 97:11Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

    Light and gladness. It is natural to desire them, and God does not crucify nature. He only trains and corrects it. This text tells us that light and gladness are for the upright, and the next verse bids the righteous rejoice. An eagle desires the air, and a fish the water. Is it strange? A child of God is a child of light, begotten of Him who is light and in whom is no darkness at all. If he longs for the light, is that strange?

    But what about the peculiar way in which this promise of light and gladness is put? Light and gladness are “sown.” A startling figure that, and a grand one too. God gives light and gladness to His children just as He does other things, germinally, in the seed form; not all at once, in floods, but with a large reserve into which the man is to work his way. As life moves toward God, it unfolds this seed and lets out more and more light, until eternity develops the full harvest of light.

    With this figure of sowing seed are naturally associated two thoughts — hiding and diffusion: and the two inevitably run together, because, in the natural process, hiding is with a view to diffusion. The process of growth is distributive, not only in the final scattering of the seed, but in that, in the unfolding of the seed, something beautiful and promising is developed at every successive stage, in the blade and in the ear, no less than in the full corn.

    If I had said that in greek the word that was rendered in the text for perfect, IN THAT SPECIFIC TEXT, means complete what would have happened is that she, and others here, would have taken offence, as to the tacit implication that their lack of ancillary reading, imputed Bible Illiteracy!

    There is something to be noted here about some writers who may not believer in Our God but, in their Sage writings, bring learned dispositions on Imhotep and Ra.

    The centralized structure of the Anglican Church is un-Biblical, just as the centralized structure of the Roman Catholic Church is un-Biblical.

    Those ideas were ideas for which a person lost his/her life and drove people to leave England and Europe for the New World.

    The Bible became available to all in their language and all read it.

    It drove the Reformation and the exodus from Europe to the New World.

    People wanted to worship God in the way they understood from reading the Bible.

    That’s why Barbados exists, and America, and Antigua and St. Kitts etc etc.

    Each church is supposed to be like a candle that is visible for miles in the dark.

    No diocese, no bishop no centralized control.

    In the very last letter that Paul wrote he told Timothy that “the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths” (2 Tim 4:3-4).

    Anything that is taught as a “man-pleaser” or to tickle the ears, must be considered apostasy for anything taken away from or added to the gospel makes it another gospel entirely and one that is altogether different and isn’t really a gospel at all (Gal 1:7). There are certainly a lot of apostate teachers and preachers out there today. Paul would identify “such men [as] false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness.

    Their end will correspond to their deeds” (2 Cor 11:13-15). An apostate teacher or preacher is disguised “as an angel of light” meaning they look like they’re teaching the gospel but they’re really apostates and what they teach is actually apostasy or the doctrine of demons.

    One of the best ways to discern apostasy from the real gospel is to be consistently in the Word of God and why the author of Hebrews wrote that “for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil” (Heb 5:13-14) so if someone is not growing in biblical knowledge (lives on milk) rather than knowing more biblical knowledge (on solid food) their powers of discernment are not trained by constant practice in the Word and thus, cannot “distinguish good from evil” teachings by apostates.

    A lot of people profess to know and teach the truth but if it varies any at all from what the Bible teaches, then mark this; they are apostates. That is according to what the Bible teaches and not based upon my own opinion. Paul tells Titus to “rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth” (Titus 1:13-14) because “They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work” (Titus 1:16). Anyone can profess but not all possess true faith in Jesus Christ and certainly not all teach it.

    Maybe Paul, as a result of his blindly zealous conversion to be a follower of Jesus was reading more into his Master’s refusal to make a disciple out of a woman or even turn any of his disciples into at least ‘one’ woman.

    This ex-assassin of a bounty hunter of Jesus followers easily transferred his hate-filled zeal to the suppression of women.

    Donna ought to support that assessment of the Pauline embodiment of Male Chauvinism at its Biblical zenith.

    William Hart Coleridge, first bishop of Barbados “by his exertions on their behalf greatly hastened the emancipation of the slaves in his diocese”.

    He became bishop in 1824 and in 9-10 years the slaves in his diocese were emancipated.

    Quakers had been at it for more than 150 years.

    Although the rapidity is perhaps overstated, no one can belittle his contribution or the contribution of the Anglican Church to education.

    Through those efforts slaves and then ex-slaves learnt to read and write.

    I often wondered in my youthful rebellion why education was such a big deal all those years ago.

    Why did I have to go to school?

    Why was it so important for emancipated slaves to know how to read and write?

    Why not give them money and land?

    Why did Christopher Codrington make the bequest to the SPG?

    After reading Piece’s comments, a few comments are in order.
    The first is that there are those who have slithered into the Church and craftily justify their adulterous practises by consistently pointing to David’s adultery. They are careful not to identify the consequences of that action, only reassuring the gullible that David was a man after God’s own heart.
    The second is that until we have matured in our relationship with God, we may stumble – even often. But we do not embrace sin. Otherwise, we can become like Judas – someone who deceived himself.
    The third is that Jesus and His followers repeatedly warned the sheep that wolves would try to deceive them. Since wolves cannot behave properly, Jesus said that they could be easily identified. Despite their deceptive words, unlike Caleb and Joshua, they cannot produce good fruit.

    Piece is still redeemable. But his fruit is very bad. He is encouraged to repent.

    … So why can’t others who study that prophet’s word not have a differing interpretation than YOU and yet be as RIGHT as you profess to be?

    All in all, these studies are as insightful per the pastor’s demeanour as they are for the researched analysis .

    I have not studied logic and rhetoric but instinctively these sorts of arguments always affect me like a green verb. Another reason why I went up to Codrington College.

    PS. Codrington College shakes a believer’s faith like the proverbial dog who has found a child’s Sunday School homework. One can go through a faze of complete disorientation. EVERYTHING is dissected and questioned and not many dogmatic answers are provided. But eventually……

    Greatest endeavour I ever undertook because it freed me to do what I instinctively always knew I should do.
    – respect other culture’s/people’s experience of God.

    It is not as simple as we like to make out. Some of us need to be certain of every little detail. We need to KNOW EVERYTHING about God in order to feel comfortable that He/She exists.     When Freedom went to School and they taught me Arithmetic, they first taught me about numbers and how one and one is two and after understanding that, they taught how to add larger numbers. At the same time I learnt Subtraction, then we learned multiplication and Division and then Fractions and finding the Common Dominator and so on until my skills improved until learning Algebra and later on Integration and Differentiation could have been taught by the same teacher. If Teachers in the World know how to teach the easier things first and build on it until you are ready for the Greater knowledge, you yourself did not start out as a Doctor but grew in your knowledge. Why is it that eight days you Pretended not to know the Difference between the Meat and Milk Doctrine? A Baby could handle Milk but would Choke on Meat and it does not mean that the Baby is Evil all it means that the Baby is not of age for meat!

    I do not use the Bible to prove the Bible. My position is that the Bible is not the be all and the end all. I really don’t care about any details. I have read and questioned and agreed with scholars whose specifics I have forgotten. I got the gist – ain’t nobody got proof of nothing.

    I don’t care about any promise or any Rapture or whether there is life after death. I don’t spend my time trying to figure any of that out. I believe I should try to love my neighbour as I love myself because it makes for a better life for ME in the here and now. I know that I will fail simply because I do fail and so I need help from the obviously Wise One who has made my life worth living. I have for many years been aware of a Presence that made Himself/Herself knowable when I called out for help. Through that Presence I was able to let go of anger and resentment and find peace even as I recognize that the fight for justice is not over. That Presence gives me the ability to love and forgive but also the strength to fight for the rights of all of His/Her creation.

    That Presence never leaves me nor forsakes me. I would not know how to live without that Presence. Life would have no meaning.

    So…. what else do I need to know?

    How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?

    Some of us need to be certain of every little detail. We need to KNOW EVERYTHING about God in order to feel comfortable that He/She exists.
