Every summer at the Plymouth Brethren Assembly that I attend here in Central Florida, the 16 Sundays in June through September are devoted to one of the men in the church giving a talk on a chosen theme.

Last week on Sweet Sunday Sermon – Enoch,  I submitted  my contribution from the year when the assignment was for contributors to harp on one of the heroes of faith from Hebrews chapter 11.

Last week on Sweet Sunday Sermon – Enoch, after sharing a few outlines on the book of Hebrews, we demonstrated how to go about presenting the salient features about a Bible character by employing the Biographical Method of Bible Study.

This week on Sweet Sunday Sermon – Caleb’s Inheritance, I have submitted  my contribution from the year when the assignment was to choose an Old Testament event or Bible character, comment briefly thereon, and then relate the lessons gleaned about the Old Testament event or Bible character  to a related New Testament passage.

I therefore  chose my favorite Old Testament Bible character CALEB, and after giving a brief Biography of this Old Testament Bible character surrounding his inheritance, in the second half, I  gave an exegesis (or verse by verse study) of 1 Peter 1:3-5 which discusses THE BELIEVER’S INHERITANCE. Our study this week is therefore entitled CALEB’S INHERITANCE (Joshua 14) & THE BELIEVER’S INHERITANCE (1 Peter 1:3-5).

The punch lines of this week’s  teaching are as follows.

  • The salient features about the life of Caleb were that
  • GOD MADE HIM A PROMISE OF AN INHERITANCE
  • GOD KEPT THE PROMISED INHERITANCE FOR HIM
  • GOD KEPT HIM FOR THE PROMISED INHERITANCE
  • GOD ENSURED THAT HE RECEIVED THE PROMISED INHERITANCE
  • The salient features about 1 Peter:3-5, and thus the comparison with  the life of Caleb are that ……………………..
  • GOD HAS MADE A PROMISE OF AN INHERITANCE TO US BELIEVERS
  • GOD HAS KEPT/IS KEEPING OUR INHERITANCE FOR US BELIEVERS
  • GOD HAS KEPT/IS KEEPING US BELIEVERS FOR OUR INHERITANCE
  • GOD WILL/HAS ENSURED THAT WE RECEIVE OUR INHERITANCE
  • The Christian’s inheritance is not like anything in this world.
  • Peter describes our inheritance by four adjectives
  • In substance:  it is incorruptible; It will not spoil or go bad. Sin cannot affect it. It will never wear out or get old. Nothing can destroy it.
  • In purity: it is undefiled;
  • In beauty: it is unfading”  It will not lose its beauty. It is not like metal that stops shining. Nor is it like a light that goes out.
  • In security: it is reserved God keeps this inheritance safe in heaven for each person who believes his promises

Those who are interested in Bible Biography and the concept of spiritual inheritance should fine the exegesis of the 1 Peter passage enlightening.

Before you post on these Sunday Sermon blogs, maybe you should like the Bereans in Acts 17:11, first consult the Word of God, to see if the things here said are so, by  studying the Scriptures diligently and inductively as enjoined in 2 Timothy 2:15 & Nehemiah 8:8 especially emphasizing reading the text literally and reading the text in its context so that you can be sure to keep context “king”, so that you will be able to competently comment on the commentaries (including the one you are reading here on BU)

Do so in dependence on The Teacher, the Holy Spirit (not me), Who Jesus promised would guide believers  into all truth (John 16:13). This way you are more likely to benefit from the discourse.

In the last 50 years I have heard teens and even some very uneducated elderly men give good and accurate thoughts on passages of the Word of God.

You might also even consult reputable Bible commentaries, or sermons or other resources, so that we may have a reasonably useful discussion. If you do not like the Bible, just stay away. That is much better than professing yourself to be wise and only proving yourself to be a fool as taught in Romans 1:22.

RE The Lord’s Prayer is the first Christian creed.

iF YOU ARE REFERRING TO THE PASSAGE IN MATHEW OFTEN CALLED The Lord’s Prayer , THAT IS NOT THE LOR’DS PRAYER, DONT CARE HOW OFTEN IT IS THUS CALLED IF YOU READ THE CONTEXT YOU WILL FIND THAT IT IS TRULY A MODEL PRAYER. THE LORD’S PRAYER IS FOUND IN JOHN CHAPTER 17

THE FIRST CHRISTIAN CREEDS ARE THE APOSTLES CREED AND THE NICENE CREED, WHICH THOUGH NOT EMPLOYED BY EVANGELICALS, ARE NEVERTHELESS BIBLICALLY SOUND IN ALL THEIR STATEMENTS, AS IS THE TE DEUM LAUDAMUS

  2. GOOD POST, FREEDOM CRIER IN WHICH YOU HAVE REFRAINED FROM ATTACKING THE MESSENGER

MOST SERMONS CONTAIN MORE THAN 5000 WORDS ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU TEACH FOR 40 PLUS MINUTES

    DavidOctober 27, 2019 8:45 AM

You must ensure text does not overflow the text box.

I STARTED TEACHING VIA PPT IN 2004 AT MED SCHOOL WHEN THE PATHOLOGIST, A 3 STAR GENERAL RETIRED’ SAID TO ME GIVE THEM THE FULL PAGE, DONT SKIMP

I STARTED TEACHING UP HERE WITH PPT ON RETURN AND HAVE NO PROBLEM , AND YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY UPLOADED SEVERAL PPTS I HAVE SENT WITH OUT TROUBLE, THAT ARE/ WERE PREPARED THE SAME WAY.

I PRESENT BY PPT SO THAT MY AUDIENCE WHO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MY ACCENT CAN FOLLOW

USING PPT AND COLOURING CERTAIN WORDS AND PHRASES IS A TECHNIQUE I USE TO ALLOW ME TO IMMEDIATELY SEE WHAT I MUST SAY ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE BEHIND TIME

IN MY ONLINE TEACHING ESPECIALLY STUDENTS REALIZE THAT THE COLOURED STUFF IS TE INFO THAT MUST BE KNOWN.

THERE IS METHOD IN MY APPARENT MADNESS
    LAST WEEK IT WENT PERFECTLY
TODAY, I SINCERELY BELIEVE THAT THE DEVIL INTERVENED

  3. BE YE THEREFORE PERFECT—EVENTUALLY

OUR HEAVENLY FATHER WOULD NOT GIVE A COMMANDMENT UNLESS HE PROVIDES A WAY THAT WE MAY ACCOMPLISH WHAT HE HAS COMMANDED! I BELIEVE IN HIS PERFECTION, AND I KNOW WE ARE HIS SONS AND DAUGHTERS WITH DIVINE POTENTIAL TO BECOME AS HE IS.

    PERFECT

Complete, whole, and fully developed; totally righteous. Perfect can also mean without sin or evil. Only CHRIST WAS PERFECT. True followers of Christ may become perfect through His grace and Atonement.

    • Let your heart be perfect with the Lord, 1 Kgs. 8:61.
    • Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father in heaven, Matt. 5:48
    • If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, James 3:2.

So I believe that Jesus did not intend His sermon on this subject to be a verbal hammer for battering us about our shortcomings. No, I believe He intended it to be a tribute to who and what God the Eternal Father is and WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE WITH HIM IN ETERNITY. In any case, I am grateful to know that in spite of my imperfections, at least God is perfect—that at least He is, for example, able to love His enemies, because too often, due to the “natural man” and woman in us, you and I are sometimes that enemy. How grateful I am that at least God can bless those who despitefully use Him because, without wanting or intending to do so, we ALL despitefully use Him sometimes. I am grateful that God is merciful and a peacemaker because I need mercy and the world needs peace. Of course, all we say of the Father’s virtues we also say of His Only Begotten Son, who lived and died unto the same perfection.

From the beginning the gospel has been “FOR THE PERFECTING OF THE SAINTS, … TILL WE … COME … UNTO A PERFECT MAN, UNTO THE MEASURE OF THE STATURE OF THE FULLNESS OF CHRIST.” I am simply suggesting that at least one purpose of a scripture or a commandment can be to remind us just how magnificent “THE MEASURE OF THE STATURE OF THE FULLNESS OF CHRIST” really is, inspiring in us greater love and admiration for Him and a greater desire to be like Him.

We may not be able to demonstrate yet the 10,000-talent perfection the Father and the Son have achieved, but it is not too much for Them to ask us to BE A LITTLE MORE GODLIKE IN LITTLE THINGS, THAT WE SPEAK AND ACT, LOVE AND FORGIVE, REPENT AND IMPROVE at least at the 100-pence level of perfection, which it is clearly within our ability to do.

Those of us who aspires to a more Christlike life than we often succeed in living, if we admit that honestly and are trying to improve, WE ARE NOT HYPOCRITES; WE ARE HUMAN. May we refuse to let our own mortal follies, and the inevitable shortcomings of even the best men and women around us, make us cynical about the truths of the gospel, our hope for our future, or the possibility of godliness. IF WE PERSEVERE, THEN SOMEWHERE IN ETERNITY, OUR REFINEMENT WILL BE FINISHED AND COMPLETE—WHICH IS THE NEW TESTAMENT MEANING OF PERFECTION.

That Grand Destiny, made available to us by the Atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ, who Himself continued “FROM GRACE TO GRACE” until in His immortality. He received a perfect fullness. Every hour He is, with nail-scarred hands, extending to us that same grace, holding on to us and encouraging us, refusing to let us go UNTIL WE ARE SAFELY HOME in the embrace of Heavenly Father. For such a perfect moment, I continue to strive, however clumsily. For such a perfect gift, I continue to give thanks, however inadequately. I do so in the very name of Perfection itself, of Him who has never been clumsy or inadequate but who loves all of us who are, even the Lord Jesus Christ.

“How do I know this? My family from my mother’s side were enslaved by the people who owned the Rock Hall, St. Peter plantation. I spent a lot of my childhood at Rock Hall, NOT at the plantation house though.”

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Quakers ended slavery and Quakers owned slaves.

If Quakers hadn’t owned slaves they probably would not have become involved in its abolition.

Most Barbadian slave owners after the 1670’s were Quakers.

Therefore not only did “the people who owned the Rock Hall” enslave your mother’s side of the family, they also set her side of the family free!!

When you figure that out you will realise the bitterness you harbor inside of you is unfounded and that you are free because of the “people who owned the Rock Hall”!!.

Best I can do for you is point out the obvious!!

BTW, do you even know the people “who owned the Rock Hall”?

Yes. I meant what we commonly call the Lord’s Prayer. And I know it is a model Prayer. Jesus is reported to have said :”Pray in this way/ manner’.

But surely what you refer to as the Lord’s prayer in your submission is a High priestly prayer which would not have originated with the Historical Jesus but which any high priest of Levite heritage would have recited.

@GP “Plymouth Brethren Assembly that I attend here in Central Florida, the 16 Sundays in June through September are devoted to one of the MEN in the church giving a talk…”
The women in your church don’t talk?

YES THEY DO IN THE LADIES BIBLE STUDIES AND LADIES MEETINGS
Like most Bible believing evangelical type churches “Plymouth Brethren interpret First Timothy 2:9–14 simply as is written

    This passage says
Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

Now many folk don’t see things this way; but we try to follow the Word steadfastly.

The first serious female Christian I ever met 50 years was a missionary. I have never heard her preach or speak in a church meeting yet. But I have not met any female Christian who has accomplished as much as she has.

She came to Barbados at age 30, and started teaching Bible stories to children on three beaches in Barbados in her Bible or Good News Clubs. With in a year these Bible clubs had become three Baptist churches, and one of the young men was of to Bible school to become a missionary. At least two young people from each of these churches are missionaries today……….and I can go on. She is still teaching boys and girls the Word, and still encouraging many of her first converts in Barbados.

Many of the ladies and men in my church have retired from years on the mission field.

Do you speak in your church? What have you accomplished thereby? What have you done for the Lord as compared to all these ”dumb” women, pray tell.

You can laugh and respond with your pithy pits, but I have met too many “dumb” women who dont talk in our assemblies all through the islands and up here, they dont scoff at the Word or talk rubbish like you do about it.

NOT AT ALL SIR. NO high priest of Levite heritage COULD have recited John 17, Sir…..NOT ONE. BUT THEOLOGIANS DO CALL IT CHRIST’S HIGH PRIESTLY PRAYER
    .
WIST THOU NOTHING ABOUT THE TEACHINGS IN THE BOOK OF HEBREWS THAT CLEARLY TEACH THAT JESUS IS OUR PERFECT HIGH PRIEST WHO OFFERED NOT OFT THE BLOOD OF BULLS, BUT OFFERED HIMSELF ONCE?

WIST THOU NOTHING ABOUT THE FACT THAT ALL THE OLD TESTAMENT TEACHINGS ABOUT THE TABERNACLE AND THE HIGH PRIEST THEREOF ARE BUT TYPES OF CHRIST THE FULFILLMENT OF THESE TYPES?

PLEASE CAREFULLY STUDY HEBREWS 9 &10. USE A SIMPLE COMMENTARY LIKE GUZICK TO HELP YOU. JUST TYPE IN GUZICK ON HEBREWS 9

RE We will argue at a latter date on the Biblically soundness of the commonly called Apostles and Nicene creeds.

THERE IS NOTHING TO ARGUE on the Biblically soundness of the commonly called Apostles and Nicene creeds. THESE CREEDS ARE THEOLOGICALLY SOUND AS A GOOD BELL EACH PREMISE IN THESE CREEDS CAN BE SUBSTANTIATED BY THE TEXT OF THE WORD

Is the lesson to be learnt from the Caleb story is that the Christian must do God’s will in order to get a reward?
    YES SIR
GO TO https://davidjeremiah.blog/what-kind-of-rewards-will-believers-receive-in-heaven/ FOR A GOOD ANSWER ON THIS

.NOTE THAT THE ABOVE SPEAKS ONLY ABOUT THE CROWNS WE CAN EARN

THIS IS GOOD ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.BELOW ALSO

    How Do We Earn Rewards?

There are a lot of different ways to earn rewards:

By Winning Souls to Jesus Christ (John 4:36).
By Serving Those Who Preach and Go Soul-winning (Matthew 10:42; Mark 9:41).
By Enduring Persecution, Rejection and Being Lied About for Christ (Matthew 5:11; Luke 6:22-23; Revelation 2:10).
By Giving to the Work of the Lord (Philippians 4:15).
Giving to the Lord’s work (i.e., a missionary, preacher, prophet, soul-winner).
Giving Alms (giving to the poor or handicapped – Matthew 6:34-35; Matthew 6:1-4). Giving “alms” is not tithing.
Lending without expectation of return to people having a tough time; to those down on their luck (Luke 6:34-35).
By Labouring in Prayer (Matthew 6:6; Colossians 4:12).
Any Good Works That We Do, Whether Unto the Lord or Unto Man (1st Corinthians 3:11-15).
By Relieving the Afflicted (Matthew 25:40-45; 1st John 3:17).
If we provide a place of rest, a drink of water, a meal, money, clothes or anything to help a servant of Christ, the Lord will reward us for it. If you pass out a Gospel tract (if they are doctrinally accurate), Jesus will reward that. If you purchase the Gospel tracts (if they are doctrinally accurate), Jesus will reward you for that. If you donate money to help a Bible-believing church, you will receive a partial reward for any souls they lead to the Lord, or lives that are blessed by the preaching and teaching of the Word of God.

Again, the following Scripture plainly teaches that soul-winners are earning wages, and gathering fruit (souls saved), for life etern

  11. Unable to contribute. Giving Pastor Miller my support.

  12. The Anglican Church first had a bishop in 1824, almost two hundred years after the settlement of Barbados.

It’s churches were constantly being destroyed by hurricanes because I believe, most people were Quakers or were slaves who were yet to become Christian.

Most Quakers did not go to an Anglican church!!

There was no need for “permanent” or elaborate structures.

What we see today of the beautifully elaborate Anglican, Moravian and Methodist church buildings came into being in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as a result of the concerted attempt to convert slaves to Christianity.

Quakers did not believe in any baptism, infant or adult as far as I can determine, their marriages were recorded/witnessed in the minutes of their meetings and their burials were often in unmarked graves bearing no relation to the Anglican Church.

Most do not appear in the parochial records of the parishes in which they lived.

The record of their existence is found in the wills and deeds they left.

I was baptized and confirmed an Anglican but only because somewhere along the road, my ancestors decided to join the Anglican church.

As I have grown older I realise that infant baptism can’t be valid.

On my mother’s side, many of my early ancestors were Quaker as is the case for many, if not most Bajans.

Some were slaves who became Christian, ie Quaker or Anglican

… and others were Jews who also became Christian, ie Quaker or Anglican!!

  13. RE Good ‘Sunday’ to you Pastor GP!
I have never been, nor am I now a pastor in any church, anywhere.

RE @GPOctober 27, 2019 7:49 AM “SOLOMON , SAID TO BE THE WISEST MAN THAT EVER LIVED HAD IN TOTAL 1000 WOMEN WHO CORRUPTED HIS THINKING AND LIFE TOTALLY.”

Solomon CHOSE to put himself with the 1,000 women did he not? So how is it that you blame the women for corrupting him? Perhaps it was his feelings (note i did not say thinking) perhaps it was his own feelings which corrupted him and led him in the first place to feel that having 1,000 women was a good thing.

ALL I KNOW IS THAT 1 Kings 11:4 CLEARLY TEACHES For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.

YOU CAN JUDGE FOR YOURSELVES IF THIS TEACHES THAT THEY CORRUPTED HIM OR NOT. I THINK THAT I, AND SEVERAL EXPOSITORS AGREE THAT THIS TEXT MAY BE CORRECTLY INTERPRETED TO SAY THAT HIS WIVES CORRUPTED HIM

  16. PIECE
THOUGH YOU ARE NOT YET AT THE JUDGEMENT SEAT OF CHRIST OR THE GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGEMENT, I SEE THAT YOU HAVE A JUDGE. YOUR JUDGE SAID until we have matured in our relationship with God, we may stumble – even often. BUT HOW DOES ONE KNOW THAT THEY have matured in THEIR relationship with God?
1 Corinthians 10:12 SAYS LET HIM THAT THINKETH HE STANDETH, TAKE HEED LEST HE FALL!

HE SEEMS TO BE IGNORANT OF JUDE 24
Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy
    Jude 1:24
24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,
    WHAT A WONDERFUL SCRIPTURE!
THE LORD WILL PREVENT US FROM FALLING
THE LORD WILL PRESENT US AS FAULTLESS

Only the Lord Jesus can know if someone, or who “there are those who have slithered into the Church and craftily justify their adulterous practises by consistently pointing to David’s adultery.”

The word of God says that despite his sin that David was a man after God’s own heart, because he confessed his sin.
Your judge posits that “we can become like Judas – someone who deceived himself.”

I would think that a Judge when speaking of deceiving oneself would cite I John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. BECAUSE EVERYONE INCLUDING YOUR SELF APPOINTED JUDGE HAS THE SIN NATURE.
V 10 If we say that we have not sinned, (AS THE GNOSTICS IN JOHN’S DAY SAID) we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. BECAUSE EVERYONE INCLUDING YOUR SELF APPOINTED JUDGE HAS COMMITED ACTS OF SIN. HE IS A SINNER TOO! FOR ALL HAVE SINNED!

IT IS FUNNY THAT YOUR JUDGE- A MERE MAN- HAS THE ABILITY TO DECIDE WHO ARE WOLVES, WHO CAN OR CANOT PRODUCE GOOD FRUIT.

  18. I WISH THAT IT COULD TRULY BE SAID ABOUT ME THAT I HAD ALWAYS FOLLOWED FULLY FAITHFULLY AND FEARLESSLY, BUT I CAN NOT

I WISH THAT IT COULD TRULY BE SAID ABOUT ME THAT I HAD ALWAYS SEEN THE GRAPES INSTEAD OF THE GIANTS IN MY LIFE,

THAT I HAD ALWAYS SEEN THE THE PROMISES, A DEFEATED FOE FOCUSED ON FUTURE BLESSINGS

INSTEAD OF SEEING THE GIANTS, THE PROBLEMS, THE DANGEROUS FOES & FUTURE BATTLES

BUT I CAN SAY TRULY THAT Like Caleb
    1. GOD HAS MADE ME A PROMISE OF AN INHERITANCE
2 GOD HAS KEPT/IS KEEPING MY INHERITANCE FOR ME
3 GOD HAS KEPT/IS KEEPING ME FOR MY INHERITANCE
4 GOD WILL/HAS ENSURED THAT I RECEIVE MY INHERITANCE

I HOPE THAT YOU CAN SAY THE SAME THING

  19. God promises are true to those who belive and do his will
Caleb belive and did and God kept his promise forty odd years later Caleb inherited the land
Those who want to belive other wise are as sounding brass and tinkling symbols
The Word direct in all manner of ways to be inheritors of the kingdom
Seeking to find knocking to reveal

  20. Psalms 51 gives a clear and concise account of David repentant heart and his voice crying out to the God for forgiveness
Indeed David knew he was wrong and did not wear his evil ways like a badge of honour but became humble in his thought words and action
Today self proclaim Christian cannot claim the same title that God accord to David for their sinful nature remains exposed for all to see

  21. 1 PETER 5
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

    Philippians 1:6

6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

    2 Timothy 1:12
“For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.”

I know not why God’s wondrous grace To me He hath made known,
Nor why, unworthy, Christ in love Redeemed me for His own.
    Refrain:
But “I know Whom I have believed,And am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed Unto Him against that day.”

I know not how this saving faith To me He did impart,
Nor how believing in His Word Wrought peace within my heart.

I know not how the Spirit moves, Convincing men of sin,
Revealing Jesus through the Word, Creating faith in Him.

I know not what of good or il May be reserved for me,
Of weary ways or golden days, Before His face I see.

I know not when my Lord may come,At night or noonday fair,
Nor if I walk the vale with Him, Or meet Him in the air.

  25. Simple Simon,

The Bible was written by men in a woefully patriarchal society. What did you expect them to write? And even today and outside of the church they would have the women stay silent. Even here on BU which they have labelled a “rum shop” some recoil instinctively when a woman contradicts or upstages a man.

Years ago many women apparently used to have to pretend to be dumb in order to be attractive to men. The “sexy” dumb blonde is still the ideal woman for many.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I posted it last week and I post it again.

The Shape God Wears (by Sara Henderson Hay)

So questioning, I was bold to dare
The sinewy tiger in his lair.
‘Come forth. striped sir, make known to me
What god it was who fashioned thee.’

Out leapt he like a muscled blaze,
Patterned in black and gold he was.
‘Jehovah is his name,’ he cried,
    ‘Tiger of Tigers, beryl-eyed,

‘Flat flanked and sleek, His paws are curled
About the margins of the world.
He stalketh in His jungles grim –
I, even I, am like to Him!’

I sought that moving mountain side,
The elephant, with ears fanned wide,
    Treading forests. ‘Sir tell me
What manner of a God made thee?’

He swirled his trunk about the oak
And wrenched it up before he spoke,
Then answered in a trumpet blast,
    ‘Old Super-Pachyderm, that vast

Lord of the Elephants, the great
    Trampler upon the worm’s estate.
    Crag-shouldered, terrible is He
Who of His substance fashioned me!’

I scaled the precipice, to seek
The eagle on his drafty peak.
‘Tell me, O Gazer at the sun,
The nature of that Mighty one,

Your Lord.’ He turned his crested head
And screamed athwart the wind and said
‘Ancient of Eagles, wild and free,
Rider of tempests, He made me!

His wing is stretched above the thunder
His claws can rip the hills asunder.
His beak of two hooked knives is made –
Look on his likeness. Be afraid!’

Then turned I to the whorled snail
Whose house is exquisite and frail,
Most deftly wrought. ‘Sir, I would know
What God it was Who shaped thee so.’

Then cried he proudly to my face
‘Eternal Snail, God of my race.
The lightning is His silvery track,
He wears the world upon His back.

‘He is most beautiful and wise,
He dwelleth in the moisty skies,
In the gray wall at heaven’s rim,
And He has made me after Him!’

Then laughed I in superior mirth,
‘Attend, ye creatures of the earth,
    Misled, mistaken, all undone
    And self deceivers, every one.

‘Hear ye, deluded beasts, while I
Explain the shape God wears, and why.
    Self evident the truth’s displayed:
He is my Father, sirs,’ I said,
‘And in my image He is made!’

The woman has summed it all up in a nutshell. Humankind is bound to put God in the box they have available to them. And that is why I always bear in mind who wrote the Bible and view it through the lens of the context of the times and the culture in which it was written. When we evolve and come to a new understanding we let go of certain restrictions. The Bible is not the be all and the end all. And that is why I am able to have respect for other religions.

God is more inclusive than most of us are. He/She bursts out of any box in which we attempt to stuff Him/Her and embraces the WHOLE of His/Her creation in its diversity.

PS. I propose we find a new pronoun for God who actually has no gender. It would be far less cumbersome.

  26. Yes God does give us grace and mercy
But His grace and mercy he gives unto those with a repenteth heart
God knows that Mankind is sinful and would stumble and fall
But his word says to first call on his name seek forgiveness
It is not like we can do whatever or sinful nature cause for us to do and simply continue walking in to the ways of evil
No. When we acknoweldge or wrongs we repent and seek God’s forgiveness

  27. Donna
That is why God gave mankind free will
But tGod does not yield to the ways or thinking of mankind
God’s ways are not our ways
For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction and many enter through
But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to
life and only a few find it
Everbody would have their way of thinking but God says there is only one way

  28. 2 PETER 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Are there still Holy men? And is God speaking to them today? In 2019?

  30. BASIC CANONICITY

2 Timothy 3:16-17,teaches that “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”

  31. Are there still Holy men? And is God speaking to them today? In 2019?

YES OF COURSE BUT THEY ARE NOT WRITING THE BIBLE AS 2 PETER 1:21 IS SAYING

“holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” LITERALLY IN THE GREEK SAYS AT MOVED ” LIKE HAVING THE WIND IN THEIR SAILS”

    @ Mariposa

You need to understand what Piece the Legend is

Let me explain the purpose of some men/women.

For you to understand I will again revert to the Good Book to dispel the fallacy about the Men of God needing to be wimps when fighting against the enemies of God.

“…2 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. 5 When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”

Contrary to the popular belief of uninformed people “everyone straight in” WAS NOT A PRONOUNCEMENT THAT the army of the Lord were going in to sup with the occupants of the city Jericho.

They were going in to slay all its inhabitants.

“…17 The city and all that is in it are to be devoted[a] to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid the spies we sent…”

In short Mariposa, they were going in to slaughter EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THAT CITY!

So when Iso TALIBAN when asked what he was going to do with murderers and the wimp responded that he was going to hug up the murderers and kiss them an forgive them, de ole man said ” here is a wuss and a megalomaniac”

And I was immediately dun wid he!

Do not be fooled Mariposa, the final battle will not be with pillows and cushions

We who believe in our God GOING HAVE TO FIGHT AND DESTROY THE ENEMY, no forgiveness for that lot of demons.

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ON THE EXPOSITION OF 1 PETER 1:3-5

Prior to 1824 , the Bishop of London was the Bishop of Barbados. In 1824 the bishop of Barbados was also the Bishop of Windward Islands. The small size of the congregation did not justify a resident bishop.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++

There was no Diocese of Barbados until 1824.

If you want to say the Bishop of London was responsible I would not argue but he seemed to have had issues with that from 1813 if wiki is to be believed.

No Diocese, no Bishop of Barbados, no cathedral!!

When the Diocese was created St. Michael’s Parish Church became a cathedral and the diocese got its first bishop..

  35. “The entire result of his labours cannot be understood without the help of voluminous statistics, but it may be sufficient here to insert an extract from the Address of the Clergy of Barbados on his retirement, which certifies, that in that island alone, since the Bishop’s arrival, the number of Clergy had increased from 15 to 31; the places of worship from 14 to 35; the sittings in Church from 5,000 to 22,500; the schools from [5/6] 8 to 83, and the children receiving their education in those schools from 500 to 7,000.”

    http://anglicanhistory.org/wi/coleridge_memoir1850.html

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Sittings in church 5,000 to 22,500.

Not many “white” people went to church because they were Quakers!!

The Anglican Church, Methodists and Moravians blossomed after emancipation.

They not only provided services but also, schools.

Starting from 11 parish churches, plus Holy Cross, All Saints and St. Mary’s in 1824 the number was increased from 14 to 35.

Schools were also increased from 8 to 83, tenfold.

  36. No, Mariposa. MAN said that God said that there is only one way.

  37. Piece who said that the men of God are supposed to be wimps
Where did u draw such a conclusion
David was a little shepherd boy chosen by God to kill Goliath
In the bible God chose men who put their trust in Him
Putting one trust in God gives one a powerful sense of security which immediately discard fear
Not really understanding your point of reference
God knew these men innermost thoughts in ways that God knows Yours

  38. Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.JOHN 14:6

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. ACTS 4:12

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;1 Timothy 2:5

  39. Donna
Can you cite verse or chp where Man says that God says there is only one way

  40. Mariposa,

Nope! You wouldn’t find that in any Bible. That’s the whole point.

I stated that the Bishop of London was the bishop of Barbados. I nowhere stated that there was a diocese of Barbados.

  42. Donna i ask u to submit your point of reference i did not asked for u to cite your words from the bible by vs or chp

That being the case as i previously state God gave man free will
Meaning he can decipher within his own manner of thinking an interpretation to please or fit his purpose
However the question which mankind have to answer is whether his/her way of thinking is acceptable to God

  43. There was no diocese of Barbados prior to 1824 so, no bishop.

Lemon flavoured pudding, made with yard fowl eggs. I made 5 loaves, kept one for myself, will give away the other 4. A friend gave me the eggs, another friend gave me a giant lemon, big as a grapefruit.

The innocent children of the city too? When did innocent li’l children become the enemy of the Lord?

Those fellers sound like the Taliban, or Isis, or bad boys on the block armed with AK-47’s, or our buddy Pachamama armed with his guillotine.

Why wunna MEN like so much blood, gore and guts though?

  47. In my denomination we tend to look at the Bible a little differently. It is our starting point and if any scholar wishes to re-interpret an established understanding of the scriptures that person has to show cause before a new position is adopted. It is a rigorous process with many tests along the way. We do not attempt to change the words of the Bible. We attempt to place its words in the context of the times. ( I am oversimplifying it because I would have to refresh my memory on the various methods used by the scholars to examine the texts.) We attempt to separate what can be attributed to God and what can be attributed to humans in their imperfect understanding; what is to be taken literally and what is an allegory etc.

I have never heard any minister in my denomination say that there is more than one way to God. But it is implied every time they stand to pray with Muslims, Hindus, Jews and persons of other faiths in an interfaith service.

Your statement is illogical. A bishop for Barbados does not depend on ist being a separate diocese. You need to migrate from your axioms based on a fallacious premises.

    @ Donna at 9 :27 PM

We are on the same wavelength We need to understand the Bible in the context in which it was written. The stories reflect the dominant narratives of their era and cultures. Even Jesus prefaced one of his sayings thus ” you have heard it said that….. but I say”. And what he said was contrary to the traditional belief. Christianity is a dynamic living religion updated as its members make it relevant to the present times. Hence my question to GP about holy men of our era. It is really an exercise in interpretation after prayerful meditation.

  50. Since there seems to be some misunderstanding on warnings, let me provide them again. We are asked to protect the sheep by identifying false teachers and wolves in sheep’s clothing.

Jesus and His followers explained clearly how such false teachers can be identified. They simply cannot bear any good fruit. So, they typically justify their bad fruit.

    Hear John.

“Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.” (1 John 3:7-9)

    Hear Paul (the Biblical one).

“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.” (2 Cor 11:13-15)

    Hear Peter.

“They are spots and blemishes, carousing in their own deceptions while they feast with you, having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls. They have a heart trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children. … These are wells without water, clouds carried by a tempest, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.”

“For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.” (2 Pet 13b-19)

    Hear Jesus Himself.

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them.” (Matt 7:15-20)
