Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

The blogmaster received several requests to highlight the matter raised in today’s Sunday Sun (p.3) under the heading SQUATTING OUT OF CONTROL.

BU followers from the 2008 period will recall the issue of unbridled immigration frequently debated in this space. The blogmaster defended a position that unchecked immigration was not the best policy. There were many stories reported about Guyanese being taken advantage of in the construction sector. There is one story about pig pens being rented to Guyanese which still resonates with the blogmaster.

Then there was the Shanique Myrie affair which brought to the fore the growing number of night club dancers and prostitutes visiting Barbados to earn a living under the freedom of movement (CSME) arrangement.  To some of us who are not ostriches, we are aware it is big business – we have the island girls, however less is said about the Europeans on the West Coast here to do a similar job.

There were a few talking heads and bleeding hearts who promoted the view that the blogmaster was xenophobic for wanting to manage immigration to Barbados. In this matter we cannot give Ambassador to Caricom David Commisiong a pass. We respect the fact he is a declared regionalist, however, an ideology cannot be at the expense of being pragmatic or exercising commonsense. Practising open borders makes no sense for any country especially a small island like Barbados.

Today’s Sunday Sun story details what happens when national imperatives are sacrificed at the altar of stupidity. From 2007 when 36 squatters gathered at Rock Hall, St. Philip and were served notice to vacate the area to 2019 where the recent count is 300.

Aviation officials have complained that the galvanize roofs of the squatter’s (illegal)  houses pose a threat to air traffic. The blogmaster can say with certainty that in any well managed country squatters would not have been allowed to plant houses in the zone space of an international airport. And importantly now that it has been brought again to public attention, no sensible member of parliament for the area would be quoted as follows: –

I am doing a compilation of the information. We are collating data on the situation at Rock Hall. We went out in the field in about three occasions, but there is so much to compile…[the exercise he said was not about] chasing people off the land.

Really Minister Indar Weir? You must be given the award for the WTF statement.

Here is what we know, we have 300 hundred illegal structures built in an airport zone. Here it is we are being told, Barbados is proceeding to acquire Category I designation and your enlightened government has been turning a blind eye to the squatting at Rock Hall?

The other point to note is that YOU Minister Weir and representative for St. Phillip South would have canvassed this areas just over one year ago to solicit votes. What collating data on the situation what!

You politicians are all the Rh same. The blogmaster recalls Don Blackman and Trevor Prescod doing the same as you dealing with the squatters in the water zone of the Belle many years ago.

  1. “The Gaia principle is affected. I say live and let live; the squatters have a right to live also. I realize that this post is going to cause havoc among persons who think otherwise.”

I agree with you that land should not belong to anyone person since no man can make earth and in addition the ownership of land is a hoax since you should not be obligated to pay taxes on what you own.
yes we all have a right to live but not to squat in areas which can pose a danger to the safety of aviation and by extension the well being of the country.

  2. “Waiting to see the process which govt would implement in handling this squatting problem”

It is the de facto Leader of the Opposition who should be offering solutions and not disingenuous criticisms since the illegal activity was exacerbated during their term of office; but based on the knowledgeable comments of the former Senior Director of Civil Aviation whom i know to be apolitical and a man of integrity in the performance of his duties, the focus should be on immediate relocation even if the Govt has to bite the bullet and shoulder all the expenses in the interim since it was the Govt who was responsible for the outrage in the first place. The Government must not be cawed into inaction by emotion or political grandstanding but must move swiftly but rationally to have the illegal squatters removed or relocated before an aviation incident occurs to the detriment of the country.

  3. “It is the de facto Leader of the Opposition who should be offering solutions and not disingenuous criticisms since the illegal activity was exacerbated during their term of office;”

    Mr. Skeete

This is exactly what I was trying to say……… and was called a BLP yard-fowl for doing so.

A similar characterization awaits you from those who do not have the ability to think rationally.

    @ Chales Skeete at 8 :56 AM

The law recognizes that there is no absolute ownership of land. It is described as freehold , i.e at the GoB say so. The taxes we pay is for the goods and services we receive from the state. Land taxes , VAT, etc are just the vehicles for distribution of burden and collection of taxes.

  5. According to the Sunday Sun August 18,”Attorney Douglas Trotman had secured 70.000 square feet of land in 2007 at Phinnys, Well House, St Philip for the squatters but he was forced to abandon that plan after only a few were able to make the downpayment and assistance from Government was not forthcoming”

What a bloody cheek as the English would say.If Mr Trotman who ran as an independent candidate in the St Philip South constituency is so interested in helping the squatters he should purchase the land and offer it to the squatters either free of cost, for sale or for rent since he does not believe the $25.000 loan offer by the Govt out of taxpayers monies would be taken up. In other words, he should put his money where his mouth is.

  6. If the houses pose a danger to radar equipment at GAIA there are two solutions.

Remove the houses or remove the galvanize metal roofing and replace with plywood and Asphalt shingles.

Maybe there is no truth to the “radar / aviation ” problem “. Could be the work of political spin doctors “

  7. @Hants

It does not solve the problem of the health danger of living on a dump.

  8. Don’t remember the past opposition offering solutions in the Barrack saga or the Alexander deboggle
After all both started under their administration and run for more than twenty years
Until the new administration had to find solutions to both problems
Now all one can hear coming our of the PM is the problem of exacerbated size but not a word of how where and when the root of squatting started
Amazing how blp yardfowls can squawk about the size over the years but seemingly forgets that when the problem first reared its ugly head that ( the blp who was governing at the time should have made a bold political statement of nipping the problem in the bud
Only koolaid drinkers would have short sighted memories
    Guh long do.

  9. Now as i indicated another band squatters are looking for their piece of the pie
Pm opening of a pandora box it is like a gift box could create a legal challenged going forward when other squatters make similar claims under the rules standards and definition of “squatting”

  10. Let’s say for argument’s sake, the PM told Barbadians “the root of squatting at Rock Hall started” under a former BLP administration.

We AGREE, WHOLEHEARTEDLY, that “the blp who was governing at the time should have made a bold political statement of nipping the problem in the bud.”

However, are you suggesting the DEMS are JUSTIFIED for ALLOWING the illegal activity to continue, unabated, resulting in over 300 squatters at Rock Hall…………… because the BEES did not “nip the problem in the bud?”

Or, are you implying squatting at Rock Hall is a BLP problem, so the DLP refused to tackle the situation and let it remain until such time the BLP regain the reins of government?

Judging from their comments, I believe Astor is serving too much of a very strong rum punch at George Street. The supporters are consuming too much alcohol……. and are continually intoxicated.

  11. “Land taxes , VAT, etc are just the vehicles for distribution of burden and collection of taxes”.

i usually bow to your submissions but i cannot equate the payment of VAT on a purchase made with the payment of an annual tax on land i have acquired and conveyed at much expense to me and on which i have already paid VAT at the time of acquisition.

  12. Had not the PM interjected politics by way of pointing finger
The issue would have been contained to both parties but as she would(be) wanting to show want kind of metal she has to offer
in one of her transparent moments she made an error in judgement in presenting a half truth to the people using a clever political guise. to place blame on past govt
Now what i think is highly irrelevant to forwarding solution but rather what solid plans does govt have

  13. What about the rights of the people who own the property? Do squatters pay land tax?

  14. It was a dump for crissakes. Why do you think it is a health hazard to those squatting in the part of rock hall that was a dump?

Children in Britain are living in shipping containers and office blocks, report finds

Children in England are growing up in shipping containers, office blocks, and bed and breakfasts, a report into youth homelessness has found, as authorities around the country struggle to combat the country’s crippling housing crisis. A total of 210,000 children are homeless — meaning they live in temporary accommodation or are “sofa-surfing” around various homes — the report by the Children’s Commissioner found, a figure significantly higher than previously estimated.

A staggering 2.5 million children are now homeless each year in America. This historic high represents one in every 30 children in the United States.

Key facts about homelessness among children and youth In the 2016-17 school year, 1.4 million [American] students (ages 6 to 18) experienced homelessness. Most students experiencing homelessness were doubling up with other families during the 2016-17 school year (75 percent), while others were in shelters (15 percent), hotels/motels (7 percent), or were unsheltered (4 percent). In 2017, most children and youth experiencing homelessness who were unaccompanied were 13 to 17 years old (87 percent), while a disproportionately high number of all children in federally-funded shelters were infants (under age 1) and young children (ages 6 and younger)–10 and 45 percent, respectively.

  20. Bobby Clarke speaks out in Barbados today on the squatters plight

  21. “……..in one of her transparent moments she made an error in judgement in presenting a half truth to the people using a clever political guise. to place blame on past govt……..”

We all know government is said to be a continuum. You accepted the fact that you inherited the Barrack saga and Alexandra Secondary School controversy. However, like the politicians you are, you never missed an opportunity to blame the previous BLP administration for those situations……….

……….while seeking “bragging rights” for solving both issues.

You also only inherited a situation where 96 people were squatting at Rock Hall. But, according to the PM, in 2007, a comprehensive program to deal with the Rock Hall squatters was submitted to the then Cabinet, and through a social survey, they were able to compile a list of those squatters, as it relates to their name, age, country of birth, gender, occupation, size of household, income, number of children, if the home was either owned by them or rented, etc.

This meant you also INHERITED SOLUTIONS to the squatting problem (i.e the results of a social survey and a comprehensive social policy, which you could have reviewed, modified or implemented). Instead, during your 10 year tenure, you turned a blind eye to the situation and allowed the number of squatters to increase from 96 to over 300.

As exhibited by you in this forum on a daily basis, both the BLP & DLP are famous for blaming each other. In this regard, I can’t get vex wid Mottley fuh blaming wunnah.

If I could borrow Mr. Skinner’s “slogan,”…..the duopoly rules.

  22. “Bobby Clarke speaks out in Barbados today on the squatters plight”
And a very fair and unemotional comment for once i must confess

  23. Very interesting comments from Bobby Clarke
The one statement which caught my attention was Bobby stating his support for the squatters which made to question what area of the squatters plight does he support

  24. Artax did i not tell u to guh long
Dont know why yuh hurting yuh head about what i think
Cause most of the time your analogy is wrong
    Like calling me a politician
    Stuspse..
    Guh long do

  25. “And a very fair and unemotional comment for once i must confess…….”

    Mr. Skeete

    I agree with you.

Bobby Clarke “said he was on the side of the squatters” and understood their plight, from the point of view that successive BLP & DLP administrations did not give any reasonable response to solving housing problems, which unfortunately forced people into squatting as a means of improving their living standards.

But he was quick to admit the squatters do not have any “legal footing” because they are breaking the law.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

“Cause most of the time your analogy is wrong……. Like calling me a politician.”

    Hahahahahahaha……

Mariposa, my friend, I’m not “hurting my head about what you think,” far from it…….. because, it’s clear that, “most of the time” you DON’T THINK, you write a lot of political nonsense.

And I never “CALLED” you a politician….. but, I’ll immediately admit to “calling” you a DLP yard-fowl.”

  26. These are the words stated by Bobby Clarke where he mentioned his support
Nothing that You Artax stated to the concern of Bobby support is made mention or stated by bobby Clatke as to why Bobby support the squatters

. I am on their side and I understand that they need assistance, but they are in the wrong area and that in itself is crucial,” the attorney concluded.

  27. As for the twenty five thousand dollars that is a pittance can’t see how far the squatters can go on that

  28. Also how come govt finding money to pay over three hunded squatters but can find money to fix the water problems that are affecting people across the island
One person complains that where she lives the area had no water for ten days
One can bet that drought or famine the PM residence is fully stock and water is in no shortage

  29. The garbage pile up worsens
Govt what wunna gonna do about it
Wunna say wunna had the answers

  30. Mascoll like he gone into hiding
Joann Haig was reaching out to him for answers in reference to benefit checks for the disable but he never responded
Here is a man who said he knew how to correct all the wrongs of past govt but when local citizens call on him for answers he is MIA

  31. Waiting to hear from govt the standard procedure for the eligiblty for squatters to get tge twenty five thousands dollars
Word on the ground says that there many houses that have the same owner

  32. Word on which ground? You and your damn lies.

  33. ” Several areas in St Michael, St Philip, Christ Church and St George are currently without power, and crews are working on rectifying the problem.

BL&P is hoping that the issues will be resolved over the next few days,”

    https://www.nationnews.com/nationnews/news/241387/power-outages-affecting-parishes

  34. Yu have not proof just like govt has no proof of who are the actual owners of the house
The squatters were a govt unto themselves

  35. An on going poll in a local paper shows 14% of barbadians says Yes to govt plan of giving the squatters 25.thousand dollars
    86% says No
This outcome speaks volumes to the thinking of a people who are guided by a directive that govt plan does not make sense

  36. The squatters have been a govt unto themselves
For years they have been able to build houses with out outside govt interfernce
Have water light and waste disposal .
Read where a father said he raised his two boys on Squatters Row and he provided well for them
Maybe govt can learn a lesson or too from these squatters on how to run a country on nothing and be good providers for its people

  37. What about the legal owners of the properties? Have they been interviewed?

  38. What legal owners
As i stated the squatters had a system in place that out maneuvered the govt
They built houses with out approval from country technocrats
As a matter of fact they didnt even bother asking govt for approval
Squatters made their own laws live by them and now we see the end result of govt offering them large sums of money to move.
I really must give the squatters a thumbs up for being trivial and at the same time beating the system for so many years.
    ( now) even presently as
govt goes on bending knees offering reparations
    Wow

  39. The squatters are there because of politicians. The number grew from under 100 in 2007 to 300 because of politicians. This is the root of the problem, politicians and naked opportunism to support their popularity, Your infantile attempts to make it what it is not will not help the discussion.

  40. David we all know what politics lead up to the problem
    Nothing new here
However the hot and sweaty policy now presented by govt does not make sense
Hence we have a poll ran by local paper stating such
How in the name of common sense does offering tge squatters 25thousand dollars answers all the other problems associated with location and other social and economic problems (combined) attached to ongoing problems affecting the barbados landscape like proper housing garbage pick up and sewage not to mention critical health issues
How will govt budgetary planning meet these needs

  41. @ Mariposa

Don’t be intimidated by the aggression of the chairman, which his many fans conveniently ignore. Stick to your point. Squatters are illegal. They should have been removed through court orders ages ago. What about the right of possession for the legal owners?

  42. Hal never been intimidated by king kong David
However when one look at the squatters dilemma one cant help but wonder how three hundred people can hold govts hostage for so long
Maintained a self imposed form of self goverance
    Live on pittance
    All without govt intereference
Now at the last hour present govt plays into the squatters hand all absence of legal pathway ready to offer these illegal squatters taxpayers money
How can govt state openly what their monetary plans for squatters without first placing the plan in parliament for open debate
This govt lead by Mottley once again proves that on may 24th a mandate towards transparency meant a govt to lead by dictatorship

  43. “Nothing that You Artax stated to the concern of Bobby support is made mention or stated by bobby Clatke as to why Bobby support the squatters.”

My friend, did you leave your comprehension skills in George Street? Oh, sorry, a look at your above comment clearly indicates Astor served a very strong rum punch Thursday evening.

This was Barbados Today’s report on the issue:

[Clarke, who has worked tirelessly representing citizens in the dispute surrounding the compulsory acquisition of land at Emmerton in the city, said he was on the side of the squatters.

“Both DLP and BLP Governments for years were not giving any kind of decent response [to housing problems], so they [squatters] pulled out money to improve their living standards, which is understandable and I expect Government to understand their problem and find a solution. But in law, they have no case,” said the activist.]

    This is what I wrote:

“Bobby Clarke “said he was on the side of the squatters” and understood their plight, from the point of view that successive BLP & DLP administrations did not give any reasonable response to solving housing problems, which unfortunately forced people into squatting as a means of improving their living standards.”

Rather than quoting the paper verbatim, I précis the excerpt.

  44. What about the legal rights of the owners of the property?

  45. Bobby”Clarke gave double speaks
Not enough to say he support the squatters but agree with govt decision to move them based on a plan which govt has not entirely detailed having built causes and effect to the entire socio- economic enviroment
Hence one would clearly like to hear from govt relocation where how and when from govt
Housing details and also jobs for squatters
It is all well and good for Bobby Clarke to say that he ” support” the squatters
However it would have been of interest to tell in what ways does he support them
Afterall squatting is illegal and he must know that

  46. @ Tron,

Bridgetown was a massive slum for over 100 years, after the abolition of slavery. When Grantley Adams came to power, he built a number of large and modern estates to re-house these people: the Pine, Deacons, Grazettes, etc.
Ironically, the Garrison was an open ground for prostitution and we got the development of Nelson Street, Bay Street and other centres of night life. Little has changed.
It was the same Grantley Adams who extended secondary education, built the Deep Water Harbour and a new hospital. I constantly remind people of the gap in our social history, utilising the minutes of political parties and governments since 1951, and the records of our independence talks in the build up to 1966.
We can either try to fill these gaps, manufacture a bogus history (Barrow as the father of independence), or reduce all discussions to bi-party loyalties. We owe it to future generations to map our history as accurately as we possibly could. Only a hand full of people on BU try to do this. We want more.
One of the greatest burdens we have inflicted on the nation is the Barbadianisation of our top administrative positions, regardless of competence. We must reverse that historic wrong.

  47. When Grantley Adams was in power barbados was under British Rule
Hence the governance of Barbados was guided with meticulous and controlled power by the British and a rule to transparency knowning how moneies given to barbardos by Britain was spent
The difference presently is that barbados has a number of loose lips political gurus whose interest lies unto themselves
Transparency has become a bad taste in the mouths the people have chosen to goverence
Hence we have present govt implementing unilateral decisions without thought or reason of first placing all decision before parliament debate as a way of giving the people a legitimate right to know

  48. Ohhhh, and by the way, Mariposa, my friend, I’m forced to remind you of an excerpt taken from the Sunday, March 19, 2017 edition of the Sunday Sun:

“The last remaining acres of the former dump site, which is not far from Grantley Adams International Airport, was CLEARED about two years ago but MORE squatters have since MOVED IN and built ILLEGAL structures on every remaining square foot.”

“The majority of residents in the NEWEST SUBSECTION are said to be non-nationals, some of who have brought in their friends and families from Jamaica, St Vincent and Guyana.”

I AGREE the squatters should have been REMOVED YEARS AGO by a former BLP administration.

But, your previous DLP administration CLEARED the last remaining acres of the former dump site, and then ALLOWED squatters to BUILD ILLEGAL STRUCTURES, thereby EXPANDING the ILLEGAL village, under the watch of former Attorney General and parliamentary representative, Adriel Brathwaite and former PM Fruendel Stuart, under whose portfolio the T&CPD fell.

The “political blame game” fits into your agenda, but I contend that either the BLP or DLP cannot be absolved of any responsibility for the squatting debacle at Rock Hall.

Then, surely you must agree “successive governments turn blind eye to squatters at Grantley Adams International Airport.”

  49. I have already spoken several times to blame
Had it not for Mottley utterances having a methodical approach of placing blame the finger pointing would never been started and given so much input in the public domain
As a leader she should have known better and simply talked of solutions
Artax your proverbial insistence of dragging me into a debate of blame is silly
Instead you should confront Mia as to why she interjected her utterances of placing blame into an already volatile problem
It would be interesting to hear Mottley answers
You need to stop getting yourself into this bogus talk of blame
I belive you are more intelligent to know better when political droppings dont add up to a hill of beans

  50. Tch, tch, tch…….

    Come off it, my friend.

I do not engage in a “proverbial insistence of dragging (you) into a debate of blame.” Anyone reading your contributions to this forum over the years, would attest to the fact that your “utterances have a methodical approach of placing blame the finger pointing” at the BLP for ALL the “social ills” of this island….. when BOTH political parties are responsible.

When you come to BU with your and bouts of retrograde amnesia and “one sided criticisms, I “jog your memory” and provide you with evidence to prove there aren’t any fundamental political, ideological or philosophical differences between the BLP and DLP.

    If I BLAME……

    ………. (1) the BLP for not addressing the squatting issue in its initial stages and allowing the structures at that location to increase to 96 in 2007;

………(2) the DLP for allowing the squatters to illegally construct over 204 houses during their 10 year tenure, which saw the structures increased to just over 300, especially when {a} you had the results of a social survey of the area and proposals for addressing the problem, {b} after clearing the site in 2015 and {c} under the watch of the then Attorney General and parliamentary representative for the area, who stood idly by while the ILLEGAL activity continue unabated….

…….. which essentially “comes right back down” to saying “SUCCESSIVE governments TURN BLIND EYE to squatters at Grantley Adams International Airport,” . is your interpretation of me “getting (myself) into this bogus talk of blame,”….. then, I plead GUILTY as charged.

BTW, RE: “As a leader she should have known better and simply talked of solutions.”

To be FAIR to Mottley, she did “talked of solutions” and referred to proposals they formulated in 2007 to address the issue. What you should “say” is that you’re NOT in favour of those proposals, as is evidenced by your contributions to this issue.

The blogmaster invites you to join the discussion.
