Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

The blogmaster received several requests to highlight the matter raised in today’s Sunday Sun (p.3) under the heading SQUATTING OUT OF CONTROL.

BU followers from the 2008 period will recall the issue of unbridled immigration frequently debated in this space. The blogmaster defended a position that unchecked immigration was not the best policy. There were many stories reported about Guyanese being taken advantage of in the construction sector. There is one story about pig pens being rented to Guyanese which still resonates with the blogmaster.

Then there was the Shanique Myrie affair which brought to the fore the growing number of night club dancers and prostitutes visiting Barbados to earn a living under the freedom of movement (CSME) arrangement.  To some of us who are not ostriches, we are aware it is big business – we have the island girls, however less is said about the Europeans on the West Coast here to do a similar job.

There were a few talking heads and bleeding hearts who promoted the view that the blogmaster was xenophobic for wanting to manage immigration to Barbados. In this matter we cannot give Ambassador to Caricom David Commisiong a pass. We respect the fact he is a declared regionalist, however, an ideology cannot be at the expense of being pragmatic or exercising commonsense. Practising open borders makes no sense for any country especially a small island like Barbados.

Today’s Sunday Sun story details what happens when national imperatives are sacrificed at the altar of stupidity. From 2007 when 36 squatters gathered at Rock Hall, St. Philip and were served notice to vacate the area to 2019 where the recent count is 300.

Aviation officials have complained that the galvanize roofs of the squatter’s (illegal)  houses pose a threat to air traffic. The blogmaster can say with certainty that in any well managed country squatters would not have been allowed to plant houses in the zone space of an international airport. And importantly now that it has been brought again to public attention, no sensible member of parliament for the area would be quoted as follows: –

I am doing a compilation of the information. We are collating data on the situation at Rock Hall. We went out in the field in about three occasions, but there is so much to compile…[the exercise he said was not about] chasing people off the land.

Really Minister Indar Weir? You must be given the award for the WTF statement.

Here is what we know, we have 300 hundred illegal structures built in an airport zone. Here it is we are being told, Barbados is proceeding to acquire Category I designation and your enlightened government has been turning a blind eye to the squatting at Rock Hall?

The other point to note is that YOU Minister Weir and representative for St. Phillip South would have canvassed this areas just over one year ago to solicit votes. What collating data on the situation what!

You politicians are all the Rh same. The blogmaster recalls Don Blackman and Trevor Prescod doing the same as you dealing with the squatters in the water zone of the Belle many years ago.

  1. We have to wonder about you sometimes. The governments created the problem however according to you they must add to the problem by bulldozing houses that will affect nearly 1000 people including senior citizens and children? There must be a humanitarian solution.

  2. @ David BU

    Mariposa is an idiot.

Although the BLP should take some blame for allowing the number of squatters to increase to 96 by 2007, it is the DLP the wove the tangled web to deceive, when the ILLEGAL activity was ALLOWED to CONTINUE UNABATED under the watch of former parliamentary representative for the area and attorney general, Adriel Brathwaite and the minister responsible for TCPD at the time, former PM Freundel Stuart.

Both of them allowed the number of squatters to increase to over 300, mainly to manipulate these people into voting for the DLP.

It has created a mess which this current administration now has to deal with, at the expense of the taxpayers.

  3. David i gave legal resolution as necessary
My last comment for bull dozing was tongue in cheek
However i do clearly remember seeing pictures front page media a few years ago of govt officials bulldozing houses where their were occupants living
So dont come here with your holier than thou political agenda to smear
Bulldozing is not houses is not a new “thing” to the political landscape
As a matter of fact i saw those pictures in the news media as revolting and took steps for humanitarian changes to be done
Apparently the changes took place since those pictures as well as the bulldozing of occupied houses stopped
Btw noticed u never made mention of a pending problem of nationals returning home who were not given legal status to live in America and its impact on the socio economics of barbados which means a problem left in the hand of govt to resolve
I read where the PM of other Carribbean countries were very concerned as well talking of criminal elements which can be problematic

  4. Now that the squatters has said No.How will govt deal with the problem
This govt has found itself In the cross hairs of political gymnastics at the safety of the flying public and a political elephant that is adamant that it would not be challenged

  5. If one researches the events leading up to the 2007 with regard to the Rock Hall squatting saga it would seem that much of the blame should go to a Mr Douglas Trotman who it could be said used the situation to his own advantage to unseat Wood by running as an independent. During that time , when it appeared that Mr Trotman was speaking on behalf of the squatters to garner votes which would have given the real DLP candidate the advantage since neither Wood nor the real DLP candidate could appear to be supporting the irresponsible squatters given that the same former Senior Aviation Official who spoke so eloquently on brass tacks on Friday had warned of the dangers of squatting in the area. Now i am wondering if this is the same Mr Trotman who is apparently offering to broker a settlement with an offer of land for sale to Govt in the mix.

  6. The Government needs to sit down and think these things through before making irrational statements. Illegal immigrants like illegal squatters have no rights. The issue is not whether the Gov was lax in their duty but the removal of the squatters who present a clear and present danger to the safety f aviation in the country. They have to go.

  7. Squatters have rights.

  8. Now govt can not rest on its laurel and play blame game
The issue has come down to safety
    As for squatters right
A court would not overlook the safety of the flying public to rule in favour of squatters
All rights are not a guarantee when safety becomes first and foremost
Eg like shouting fire in a crowded place

  9. What rights do squatters have, apart from being bulldozed?

  10. People have a right to be protected by government. If people cannot find a place to life they will squat. Minister Weir explained today greater than 70% squatting are locals. We need to find humane solutions especially if the government is complicit.

  11. There are laws that give squatters rights to occupation of land or property
However there are plenty stipulations additionally such as proof and time period of occupation

  12. One can bet that many or all of the squatters do not have any form of legal documentation to show proof towards becoming owners

  13. Bad laws make for a bad democracy. What about the poor owners of the land, many of whom are overseas?

  14. Squatting is not an alternative to the provision of social housing.

  15. If legitimate housing is not provided for people is needs on the lower socioeconomic rung they will squat. This has been the case through the ages.

  16. Also wrapped around this issues are policies that govt have implemented such as rhe writing off of debt through waivers which undoubtedly help mostly the rich
If govt is for the people the last thing govt would want to perceive or plant in the minds of people that they are two Barbados
One deserving and the other not deserving
Again when a clear view of govt giveaways are brought into clear perspective
There will remain a chilling reminder that the rich has gotten their needs met while the poor lives as squatters

  17. So what did Mr. Weir suggest to be humane solutions
Unfortinately seems as if Mr. Weir has tied a noose around his neck
Humane solutions are costly did he explain that to the listener
In this modern world Mr. Weir cannot expect that these squatters would settle for pit toilets and having to pay sewage taxes
After all the only thing these squatters have grown accustomed is a free life free of govt intrusion by way of taxes

@Robert Goren August 18, 2019 7:35 AM “Mariposa is an idiot.”

That is a fact universally acknowledged.

  19. Dear Squatters

As I said, you just had to hold on and the Bajan government will come to the rescue. The scarce taxpayer funds will now be used to help you in whichever way you want. Dont worry about TCP, land tax or any of that foolishness. The laws are only for local working class Bajans. For anyone else it is optional. Please feel free to do as thou wilt.

Dear Law abiding working class Bajans,

The Dullard reminds you that you are the least important piece of this puzzle. Cannon fodder. Pawns. We need your vote but please do not expect anything from us. In fact, next year it will be more taxes in wunna RH.

After we sell off the rest of your assets we will invite Ghanians, Kenyans, Chinese, Indians and others to take your jobs and compete for what little is left. You are not important. If only we could quickly expand the population to have a pool of secure votes…

  20. SirSimpleSimonPresidentForLife Avatar
    SirSimpleSimonPresidentForLife

It seems to me that 30-0 is pretty secure.

Who needs foreign votes when the Bajans voted 70% for the BLP’ 30% for the DLP and others?

Maybe it is the DLP which needs to secure the foreign vote?

  21. @ Mariposa August 19, 2019 5:47 PM

How about letting them squat in the many unoccupied houses ‘planted’ under your administration and from which there were many kickbacks falling into some rather greasy palms of politicians and their friends?

Under your administration even the entrails of the once fatted calf were dissected and shared out as decaying manna à la Destructive Lying Party.

    @ Mariposa August 19, 2019 5:47 PM

How about letting them squat in the many unoccupied houses ‘planted’ under your administration and from which there were many kickbacks falling into some rather greasy palms of politicians and their friends?

Sounds good to me as a matter of fact i soooooo like that plan
    Why not! Holy cow
Why should White Oaks get the lion share
Why not poor foreigners from the Carribbean get their share of the pie
Look i tell u what Miller since govt needs a solution u ought to pass it on to Mia free of charge
    Drum roll please

  23. Question: if people area squatting how then do they get on the electoral register? What is their official address? Should their names be automatically removed from the electoral register?

  24. You are not following the discussion? Many of the people squatting as reported by the minister are locals one and legal two. They are squatting out of a need to live some place because of an unfortunate circumstance.

  25. You continue to demonstrate your ignorance. Being local has nothing to do with being on the electoral register. You must (should) have an official address to be on the electoral register. A squat IS NOT AN OFFICIAL address. It is the illegal occupation of someone else’s property…
Because they are in need does not justify squatting. What about the owners of the property? Why don’t they squat on COW Williams’s land?

  26. You may have the last word.

  27. To be clear for others who are less bigoted, the basis for getting in the electoral register is immigration status I.e. the ability to produce a government/immigration document that confirms status. We should resist conflating issues.

  28. What does having the last word mean? That you realise you are talking nonsense?

  29. Hal Austin

A big Amen u have spoken a mouthful

  30. I am prepared to accept this is the nonsensical procedure in Barbados. But tell me: if someone has immigration status only how do they decide which constituency they will register for? Do they toss a coin? You always try to explain away your ignorance by being abusive and aggressive. It says a lot about you.
What is bigoted about saying the two principal qualifications for the electoral register are reaching the age of majority and a legal address. When you turn up to vote they check your name, address and your ID.
Only foreigners need to prove immigration status. All 300 squatters at Rock Hall are not foreign.

  31. Did the minister take an official consensus or have verifiable documentation as proof most of these people are locals
This govt has managed to pull wool over peoples eye because bajans along with media does not asked these political termites hard questions
When minister made that statement media should have insisted he gives verifiable proof of his statements

  32. David BU

To be FAIR, because people may be in need of housing, does not JUSTIFY them illegally occupying property, whether it is owned privately or by the state. Under the laws of Barbados, squatting still remains illegal. And, if squatting is an ILLEGAL ACTIVITY, then, squatters are not the official owners of the land, which means they do not have an official address.

Since an individual needs an official address to determine his/her constituency and polling station, If the names of those Rock Hall squatters are actually registered on the electoral list, WHO authorized this registration, especially non-nationals?

If they actually voted in previous elections, under these circumstances, shouldn’t their votes be deemed null and void?

I also agree if their names are on the list, then, they should be automatically removed immediately.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Mariposa

To be FAIR, I have to agree with you in this instance.

The PM said at the press conference that, contrary to what people are saying, many of the squatters at Rock Hall are not non-nationals. She gave this opinion based on the 2007 social report, which I believe is trying “to pull wool over peoples’ eyes.”

However, surely you must AGREE the former representative for St. Philip South and Attorney General, Adriel Brathwaite, as well as former PM Stuart, under whose portfolio the Town & Country Department fell….. and by extension the former ministers of housing (Michael Lashley and Denis Kellman), should take full responsibility for allowing this illegal activity to continue unabated and squatters to increase to 300 from 96 in 2007.

I’m sure you recall when this issue of squatting was raised in 2017 and when asked if he new of what was occurring at Rock Hall, Adriel Brathwaite acknowledged he was AWARE of the illegal activity, and said he even have friends living there.

Is it not disgraceful that a shameless, useless Attorney General being AWARE of an ILLEGAL ACTIVITY occurring in his constituency during his 10 year tenure, did absolutely nothing to at least control or curb the situation?

You should PONDER on these things before attempting to absolve you DLP of any responsibility and “politically spin” this issue as the fault of the present BLP administration.

  33. The thing is disgraceful
Now as far as blame game that too is disgraceful
What people are now addressing and seeking are realistic solutions and not govt hot and sweaty solutions of trying to appease the illegal squatters by handing over the treasury to them

  34. Who needs foreign votes when the Bajans voted 70% for the BLP’ 30% for the DLP and others?
    +++++++++

Simon you should learn to grasp context and nuance. But being a septuagenarian it may perhaps too late for you.

@Hal Austin August 20, 2019 5:52 AM “Question: if people area squatting how then do they get on the electoral register? What is their official address? Should their names be automatically removed from the electoral register?”

I’ve worked in registering voters, and in administration of elections in Barbados and elsewhere. To the best of my knowledge there is no such thing as an official address, Your address is the place where you spend most of your time, and the place does not have to be a “legal” residence. The idea is that people should not be denied the right to vote because they are poor or without a proper, permanent home, so if a person spends most of his or her time at the Salvation Army hostel, in a shanty in the parents backyard, in mummy’s basement, sleeping on a friend’s couch, under the canopy of the Treasury building, or wherever the person as long as they are an adult citizen has the right to vote.

So even though like most sensible people i find squatting to be a problem, the people at Rock Hall, or the people “living on the dump” should have been canvassed, and should have been encouraged to vote in the last elections. If they were ignored by either party or by both parties then both parties are wrong.

Universal adult franchise has to include poor people, marginally housed people and “homeless” people.

  36. @Atax

The comment was to address the fact it is immigration status that confirms being updated to the electoral list not to be confused with illegals.

The others point is that squatting is illegal however it happens because there is a genuine need to provide housing for people on the lower rung.

  37. “The comment was to address the fact it is immigration status that confirms being updated to the electoral list not to be confused with illegals.”

    David BU

    I understand your point.

  38. Mariposa

    RE: “The thing is disgraceful.”

Yes, it is indeed DISGRACEFUL. It is disgraceful that for 10 years, the shameless Adriel Brathwaite, as the Attorney General and parliamentary representative for Rock Hall, and Fruendel Stuart as former PM and minister responsible for Town & Country Planning, would stand idly by and ALLOW the ILLEGAL ACTIVITY of squatting to continue UNABATED, where the number of squatters increased from 96 in 2007 to over 300 presently…………. perhaps in the interest of securing the squatters’ votes.

And it’s also disgraceful that Michael Lashley and “Moontown” Kellman, as two former ministers of housing under the previous DLP administration, were UNABLE to PROVIDE any proactive solutions to the problem as well either.

“Blame game??????” My friend, this is not the “blame game,”……. it is a FACT!!!!

RE: “What people are now addressing and seeking are realistic solutions and not govt hot and sweaty solutions of trying to appease the illegal squatters by handing over the treasury to them.”

I’ll address your comment by mentioning three (3) facts.

(1). During your 10-year tenure, no member of the former DLP administration made any attempt to address the issue of squatting nor did they proposed any realistic solutions to deal with and solve the problem.

(2). Many of you always come to this forum to shout about human rights or having some new found deep concern for poor people, when it’s either convenient or politically expedient to do so.

Supposed government decides to instruct personnel from MTW to demolish those houses at Rock Hall effective tomorrow. I’m sure the political yard-fowl you are, you would be the first one in this forum to say the government is being inhumane and unfair to poor people. You’ll ask if it’s fair that houses should be demolished without a thought for the welfare of children and the elderly, “while government continues to pay White Oaks.”

If you acknowledge there are poor people in Barbados that cannot afford to buy “house and land,” then you should acknowledge that squatting is a result of that unfortunate reality, in addition to successive BLP and DLP administrations refusing to adequately address this issue, by implementing housing policies to give impecunious families and individuals an opportunity to own property.

(3). Although I’m not necessarily in agreement with the $25,000 grant to those squatters, I understand the rationale behind the gesture. To be eligible for the grant squatters must be below the poverty line, I.e. earning $15,000 per annum or less. However, I believe we should wait on the result of the social survey to determine how many of these squatters would be eligible for the grants.

Additionally, we must also bear in mind that loans will also be offered to those squatters that are above the poverty line.

What I would like is for you, Maureen, Trini, Verla and your other DLP colleagues to do is, after ACCEPTING responsibility for ALLOWING this illegal activity to continue under your watch………..

…………SUGGEST a few “realistic solutions” and DISCLOSE what are the DLP’s proposals to address the issue of squatting in Barbados.

  39. Artax speak only for yourself but dont put words in my mouth as for the bulldozing of homes as i previuosly mentioned a few years ago a local paper would highlight local authorities buldozing homes where court ordered for eviction was ordered and i made a stink not by loud talk but by action
Now back to the squatters and govt alternative cant see how govt would be able to relocate these people especially those having two storey buildings in any event that is not a problem for me to figure
That is govt problem cause when the problem first started it should have been stopped immediately

  40. “That is govt problem cause when the problem first started it should have been stopped immediately.”

    I agree.

  41. I find it appalling that Mia would even make mention the numbers of squatters which occupied Rock Hall when she was a minister
I find it appalling thst she would dare interject politics as a self defense to point blame
What should be asked of Mia when the squatters first step foot on Rock Hall would it not have been easier to remove the smaller size .
So why is the PM and the blp yardfowls trying to distant the blp govt of the day from the root cause of the problem which started in its initial stages when blp was in govt
Honesty should persuade the PM to be truthful at where blame should begin instead of using a political yardstick of convience
But then again this govt is yet to be transparent and truthful about anything they have dons so far
Hell Therfore would freeze over before govt point any of their past mistakes in their direction

  42. What numbers did Mia refer to when she was minister?

  43. Prime Minister Mottley says back in 2007, there were 96 unauthorized structures on the land, but that number had significantly increased over the past decade

  44. “What should be asked of Mia when the squatters first step foot on Rock Hall would it not have been easier to remove the smaller size.”

Yes, although your above comments are true and I agree with you 100%, they also highlight your inability to think rationally, reasonably and outside the DLP’s “political box.”

Let me “tell you why I say so.”

Mottley said the social survey conducted in 2007, revealed there were 96 squatters at Rock Hall. Recall the DLP won the Tuesday, January 15, 2008 general elections. This obviously meant the DLP, more or less, inherited just over 100 squatters…….. as well as recommendations the BLP left to deal with the situation.

Rather than exploring the BLP’s recommendations or implementing policies to deal with squatting in the short-term and on a long term basis, the DEMS allowed this ILLEGAL activity to CONTINUE, UNABATED, which saw the number of squatters increase to over 300, especially under the WATCH of former ATTORNEY GENERAL and parliamentary representative for the area, Adriel Brathwaite.

In other words, Adriel Brathwaite, as attorney general, UPHELD and CONDONED people breaking the law.

Now, we may ask which is worst……. the BLP not “nipping the situation in the bud” at 96 squatters………. or the DLP ALLOWING an ADDITIONAL 204 people to take up ILLEGAL residence at Rock Hall?

    The answer????

“Successive Governments Turn Blind Eye to Squatters at Grantley Adams International Airport.”

RE: “So why is the PM and the blp yardfowls trying to distant the blp govt of the day from the root cause of the problem which started in its initial stages when blp was in govt.”

Yuh know, by your above comments, you are engaging in the “blame game.”

Don’t you know that, by NOT acknowledging or admitting to the FACT the DLP’s non-action EXACERBATED the problem over the past 10 years……. whereby the squatters increased to over 300………….

………. the DLP yard-fowls are LIKEWISE “trying to DISTANT the then DLP government from” any “non-involvement” that contributed to the problem?

  45. Boy fuh some person who claim not to be a political blp yardfowl u sure know how to drop yuh feathers all over de place

  46. Mottley says she will give tge squattets twentyfive thousand dollars th help them relocate but govt cant find the money for the invalidity pay out
Yuh see why it is so hard to believe anything coming out of Mottley mouth
Will bet that when all the smoke is cleared the squatters would remain on that land and the only way they would be removed is when disaster occcurs because of govt not heeding warnings of aviation officials

  47. If there are 300 squatters, are these individuals or families? Will the Bds$25000 be give to each person or each family? Was this decision made in parliament? What about compensation for the property owners?
By the way, what message does this send to Barbadians overseas: lawyers stealing money from clients; squatters illegally occupying property; no redress in the courts.

  48. And, likewise, “girl fuh some person who claim not to be a political DLP yardfowl u sure know how to drop yuh feathers all over de place.”

My friend, your problem is “political yard-fowlism,” resulted in you being devoid of any ability to THINK things through thoroughly, rationally and reasonably ……… and “outside the DLP political box.”

While everyone has acknowledge the fact that “successive governments turned a blind eye to squatters at Grantley Adams International Airport,” you, on the other hand, have chosen to lay the blame for this illegal activity solely at the feet of ONE political party.

Essentially, you’re implying the DLP is JUSTIFIED in ALLOWING the squatters to INCREASE to 300, because the BLP did not do anything about the 96 they recorded in 2007.

    Thine ignorance is boundless.

  49. Waiting to see the process which govt would implement in handling this squatting problem
One question with purpose what procedure or standard set for squatters to receive
Setting a precedent based solely on a humanatarian cause can lead to legal interpretation in the future
Also what about the homeless people sleeping outside business can they be considered as squatters and entilted to a relocation process under the guidlines of squatting
