[Barbados Underground] The decision by the principals of Ross University School of Medicine to relocate to Barbados has sparked a debate across the region. The blogmaster sees the decision for what it is, Ross’ owner made a BUSINESS decision to move from hurricane ravaged Dominica to a user friendly – out of the hurricane track – geography.

The more important question Barbadians should be asking is what concessions were given to Ross University School of Medicine by the Mottley government. While in opposition Mottley and team were strident in the call for concessions given to Sandals, Cost-U-Less and a few others be shared with the public. Guess what, the public is none the wiser after being in office for more than three months.

In response to requests from members of the BU family to create a blog space to facilitate debate the blogmaster is pleased to share the letter Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit issued to President and CEO Lisa Wardell of Adtalem Global Education – parent company of Ross University – last month to inform the discussion.

Thanks to the BU family member for sharing!

  1. @ pieceuhderockyeahright, who wrote ” I wonder how many of the others of the money launderers ”

What about those who pay bribes but the money does not leave Barbados ?

Seems launching this foray into the USA justice system could be a diversion.

Buh doan mine me cause this is just an imaginary for my novel

Go dig. You may very well find that I supported the guvment, you will also find that I tek nuff licks from Bushie for being a strong supporter of CSME. You gine be calling me the PM very soon. I have gone from yardfowl, to paid PR now czar.

    @Mariposa
After your herculean efforts to divert attention from the thread about Mr. Inniss’a arrest on money laundering charges by posting stupid allegations there about the arrival of Ross University in Barbados, It is a most delicious irony to see substantive discussion of Mr. Inniss’s misadventure taking over this thread about Ross U.

You asked a good question which deserves an answer. The bribe money that does not leave Barbados goes to building apartments that are paid for in cash, opening businesses and purchasing high end vehicles.

When the apartments are finished and whether tenanted or not additional bribe money is deposited as rents received. Let’s say you open a business, for argument sake a rum shop, bribe money is also added to the day’s takings and deposited as clean money. The high end vehicles are paid for in cash with the collusion of the dealers, who in turn deposit the cash over time as a normal part of their daily takings. You really think that this scam only works for fast food restaurants?

  5. Hoping that Mia Mottley does not have or feel any comfort from those who would make her belive that undermining a weak and vulnerable country is the right and proper thing
Throught out the history of Barbados politics govts leaders have always take pride in steering barbados interest and people away from the glaring eyes of public perception that barbados is a nation of self serving and arrogant people
Now with a new leader to guide our future a path has been set one in which glaring eyes and open mouth can once again say Barbadians are a nation of self serving and arrogant people
    Certainly we can do better

  6. @Caswell,

Will be interesting to see if there will be the usual “commission of inquiry” into malfeasance during the previous administration.

Mariposa is Spanish for butterfly but you seem more of a moth and Mia is your flame. Give it up for Pete’s sake. You are acting as though you are trying to find something on her. You do not have to continue with this nonsense, unless some other substantive development emerges. Trust me, knowing Mia, give it time something else would emerge.

  8. Why involve yourself with Mariposa the bolg is for all voices and opinions .therfore Mariposa is also entitled to views or opinion

On the subject of offshore university it is of relevance that past govt did not involve barbados intergrity by undermining the peoples of those countries interest when engaging with the administrators off shore universities

  9. What ? What? Are you surprised that past govt have nevet used or engaged in undermining or backstabbing small island nation govts and its people for economic purpose
Dont you feel a sense of shameful disgust that present govt has undermine the Dominican people interest by removing 30percent of their GDP…..NO?
    Well i do
That is why i will continue to give my opinion not asking or looking for any one to agree with me
I was up in a poor family enviroment and told to do unto others as i would like done unto me
    Were You?
I dont think so because in the past days you have revealed that your interest is one of self interest and if need be you would steal and rob any one rich or poor
    You are one pathetic bastard

  10. Saw you online this evening during Stuart’s bitter speech to the AGM. After all these weeks showed he learned nothing. What a vindictive and bitter man. Let him retire and read his two books.

Neither do i stand on line to backstab by friends
But then again some people would
Wouldnt they ?and you David belive it is alright

  13. Also there is nothing bitter about Stuart speech What is bitter is the serpentine tongue of our present leader who has dished out bitter medicine to the people of barbados with huge tax increases and more bitter medicine to the people of Dominica by wiping out one fourth of their economic progress
All Stuart did was to lay out the truthfulness and deceptive model of the blp party bitter past and the present years

Why do you constantly describe anyone who disagrees with you as being “silly,”……

…….but when they respond accordingly, yet become offended?

    Insecurity!!!!!

    I’ll await your usual abuse.

  15. ******you become offended?

  16. Don’t shift the argument. I quoted someone and you claimed that I agreed with him. It is silly to suggest a quote is an endorsement. That is essay writing 101.

You said and I quote “… The high end vehicles are paid for in cash with the collusion of the dealers, who in turn deposit the cash over time as a normal part of their daily takings. You really think that this scam only works for fast food restaurants?…”

Yet incredulously we have one Crier for Freedom here “released” from said 700 slaves rather employee plantation who is now “washed in the Blood of The Lamb!”

She makes no reference to such past or ongoing sins but comes to us cleansed and delirious that we ignore all the past and present sins.

In fact dear Senator, in all the REMONSTRATIONS of said tear driven enunciated, have you ever once seen her speak about the scourge of drugs?

Has she ever but once spoken about what should be done to such persons?

But then again her sins be forgiven her WIGHOUT HER RENOUNCJNG THAT SIN PUBLICLY cause she special. Heheheheh

  18. I believe you’re the one shifting the argument.

    I asked a simple question:

Why do you constantly describe anyone who disagrees with you as being “silly,”……

…….but when they respond accordingly, yet become offended?

And your response was irrelevant to the question.

    Comprehension and common sense 101.

But then again…… the Almighty Hal Austin is by far the most intelligent individual posting to BU, while all others are “silly” and write “waffle.”

    1. A modern, compelling narrative on why climate change really matters for the left in the year 2018.

A new progressive story on climate change in the UK is needed urgently. One that feels urgent, authentic and contemporary. One about how climate breakdown is intimately connected to the things that we worry about and the values that we hold. One about people, not systems; principles, not lines on graphs. Not a vague aspiration for jobs in clean energy, but one about work, and home, and international solidarity, and justice, and fairness.(Quote)

  22. Heard that barbados govt gave 50%deposits as surety for the Cloverly apts where ROSS students now resides
Also a waiver on water taxes and departure tax

  23. Mariposa,

If that is true, that is unforgivably scandalous.

  24. IF THEY INDEED DID THIS……..THAT WOULD DEFEAT THE PURPOSE OF BRINGING ROSS TO BARBADOS AS YOU WOULD BE GIVING AWAY A LOT OF THE REAL BENEFITS OF HAVING THE SCHOOL HERE

ARE THE OTHER BOGUS SCHOOLS NOW GOING TO HAVE THESE BENEFITS TOO?

  25. This govt has shown in the last two months they are capable of being idiotic
Ross was given huge incentives to stay in Dominica most of which govt paid for and refuse after much negotiation by which Ross agreed to remain
Ross is a company driven by a business model for profit
The idea that Ross would leave Dominic and give up so much of what the govt of Dominica had offered them because of the Hurricane is poppy cock and a shadow story to hid what incentives were dangled before there eyes by Barbados.
The bottom line being that Barbados offers were much larger
Furthemore there arr other countries in the region that is not in the direct path of hurricanes which Ross could have avail itself if wanted to do so
The burning question of transparency is the tipping point of Ross relocation to Barbados and where the issue would remain

  26. All roads lead to the. Bogus Hurricane story
All roads lead to the deafening silence on the actions of transparency
Mottley one s o.otood in the house of Parliament and bellowed
    Silence means consent

  27. You are correct, ROSS is a business and satisfied customers must be a priority for them. If students and parents are not happy with having to live in hurricane threatened physical conditions, it will influence decision making. You ignore that ROSS is presently accommodating ROSS students in St.Kitts and Tennessee. You are prepared to believe what is in your head despite what is obvious.

  28. @Caswell Franklyn

I believe your advice can be useful and I will certainly be guided by much of it.

By the way, about the suits, even though I look good in them, they are a bit too much for my taste but when in Rome.

@ are tailored suits a requirement for the meeting of the senate? I can remeber Branford Taitt; did he always wear a suit when in the senate?

  29. RE ROSS IN ST KITTS

YOU DO KNOW THAT ROSS HAS A VET SCHOOL IN ST KITTS
AND THAT NEARBY IS THE MED SCHOOL WHICH WAS STARTED BY ROSS FAMILY MEMBERS AFTER THEY SOLD THE MED SCHOOL IN PORTSMOUTH TO DEVRY ABOUT 15 YEARS OR SO AGO.

  31. Ross can have schools wherever it dam please . However the issue of Ross locating to Barbados goes above and beyond Ross business endeavours but what role did the barbados govt have in enticing Ross to locate to Barbados and a need by this govt to be openly truthful and to where good goverence is relevant to transparency
If govt has used taxpayers monies or other forms of resources in any way as incentives for Ross to relocate to Barbados the public has a right to know
Mia ran a campagain on transparency . Now it is apparant that another promise has been broken and replaced by a strategy of smoke and mirrors
The koolaid will eventually lose its purpose and the truth will be told
    It
What is being said as to govt interaction and concessions given to Rossbwould remain as a truth until this govt decides to speak or interject what information it has about any concessions given to Ross

  32. This is because you know so? You have inside information? You prefer to based conclusions on lies posted no basis in fact read concessions?

  33. this topic should be closed
we are not learning anything new
we are only being subjected to constant rubbish
i am not a favorite of offshore schools……..but they are here in barbados
lets see how we can benefit from them

IF WE CAN HAVE THE 5 OR SO THAT THE DLP BROUGHT TO THE ISLAND
THERE IS NO GOOD REASON WHY WE CAN NOT HAVE ROSS TOO
WHEN AUIS LEFT ST MAARTEN -ALSO AFTER THE SAME HURRICANE- NO ONE COMPLAINED
NO ONE SAID “LOOK HOW THE DLP ROB THE PEOPLE OF ST MAARTEN

  34. THE DUMBOCRATIC LABOUR PARTY BROUGHT ABOUT 5 MEDICAL STOOLS TO BIM
NOT A SOUL MURMURED OR COMPLAINED OR ASKED ABOUT CONCESSIONS
MIA BRINGS AN ESTABLISHED MEDICAL SCHOOL AND THE BULLSHIT FLIES!

QUESTION WHAT CONCESSIONS DID THE DUMMBOCRATIC PARTY GIVE TO THE 5 MEDICAL STOOLS IT BROUGHT INTO BARBADOS

    CONCLUSIONS:
5 MEDICAL STOOLS IS BETTER THAN I ESTABLISHED MEDICAL SCHOOL?
ONLY THE DUMBOCRATIC LABOUR PARTY MUST BE ALLOWED TO BRING MEDICAL STOOLS TO BARBADOS

You are so right. One of those offshore medical universities, American University oh Barbados, is operating a hell-hole out of old B.E.T building in Wildey. They treat staff worse than slaves, refuse to pay NIS and refuse to clean the building.

    Sent from my iPad

  36. Well if the govt belive that public conclusions are incorrect in reference to Ross concessions
Then only can the govt give the relevant information
The govt is quick to PR ever dam thing . So why not on relevant issues relatingto. Ross
Giving away taxpayers monies and not told in what way and manner is not good goverence

And to You bozie GP i have already decided that u have a missing screw
So let me spelled out my reasons for keeping present govt feet to the fire
Present govt pushed the issue of transparency with a promised to be more transparent than past govt
Sorry if u did not get the memo

  37. mariposa

you have every right to keep the governments feet to the fire
BUT IN THE ROSS SITUATION …….THERE IS REALLY NO THERE THERE

IF ROSS IS A PROBLEM…THEN THE 5 MEDITAL STOOLS BROUGHT IN BY THE DUMBOCRATS MUST BE INVESTIGATED TOO

    SENATOR FRANKLIN SIR

I AM NOT AT ALL SURPRISED TO HEAR YOUR REPORT THAT AUB
is operating a hell-hole out of old B.E.T building in Wildey. They treat staff worse than slaves, refuse to pay NIS and refuse to clean the building.

I HAVE SEEN SIMILAR IN ALL THE INDIAN LED OFFSHORE SCHOOLS AT WHICH I HAVE WORKED

GOVERNMENT SHOULD WITHDRAW AUB’S CHARTER UNTIL ALL NIS PAYMENTS ARE MADE

  38. Why are medical schools being attracted to Barbados? The business plan we are told includes a sought after forex inflow which is gold dust for an island about to apply for IMF SDR drawdowns, employing people, and other economic considerations etc. This preamble explains why NIS and other Government departments owed will look the other way even codes are being contravened.

  39. there is no reason for local companies or OFFSHORE BOGUS MEDITAL STOOLS TO FAIL TO PAY NIS OR OTHER FEES TO GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS

  40. Tax waivers or concessions(given) to any person individual or group are known as taxpayers money granted to govt on a promise that govt would guard and protect with the interest of the people and country Ross is an outside entity now located in Barbados govt has avail Ross to entitlements that belong to the State
It therfore behooves me to think that asking govt to release transactions between govt and Ross is deemed offensive because of the asking …especially when recent actions between Ross and Dominica shows that Ross was not altogether truthful on meetings with the Dominican govt.

  42. How can the business plans of medical schools include forex? This is more waffle about finance that the guy does not understand. He should post anonymously.

  43. You are a buffoon par excellence. The inflows from medical schools with a foreign student population originate from where? You may have the last word on this matter.

  44. Georgie Porgie

The following information, which was taken from the BGIS website, should be of interest, not only to you…….but also to Mariposa and the resident pantomath….both of whom have been hypocritically and over exaggerating this non issue.

The information has to do with the relocation of AUIS to Barbados.

“Speaking at the ribbon cutting ceremony this weekend to mark the official opening of the university’s Basic Sciences Facility, Dr Edward Layne, a gastroenterologist and native of Barbados, provided the background of the AUIS’ move to Barbados.

Layne, who served as the honorary consul for Barbados in Atlanta for the past 20 years before his retirement last December, was instrumental in paving the pathway for the institution’s move to Barbados.

“Two years ago, a young visionary entered my office, his name was Mr Milo Pinckney. He said to me, ‘Dr. Layne, I am not a doctor but I am the son of a physician entrepreneur with Caribbean roots’. He said ‘I am a businessman, who owns a medical school and have several patents in the field of medical technology’, and that in my opinion may be able to revolutionise the training of young doctors and the practice of medicine.”

He added that he was quite curious as Pinckney explained his interest in moving the university to Barbados and deploying a patented, medical information technology device called the Clinical Activity Rotation Log or CARL.
    +++++++++++++++++++++

I found the following information very interesting.

“Admittedly impressed by what the young businessman had to say, Layne introduced him to the minister of foreign affairs and foreign trade, Senator Maxine McClean, while hosting the fourth biennial Barbados Comes to Atlanta event in May 2016.

Sharing his perspective of the experience, Pinckney explained that when he met McClean a year and a half ago, “in a moment’s notice” she saw the merit in what they presented when they proposed to move AUIS to Barbados.

“She embraced it with such vigour that she visited our offices in Atlanta to see first-hand what we were doing, and she said ‘I can get behind it’ and championed the move here…”
    ±++++++++++++++

Note, Maxine McClean “EMBRACED it with such VIGOUR that she visited our offices in Atlanta to see first-hand what we were doing, and she said ‘I CAN GET BEHIND it’…………and championed the move here…”

Also….…….”The minister of foreign affairs EXPLAINED that CONVINCING HER COLLEAGUES was “not a HARD TASK” as they all recognised the potential of the institution as it has been demonstrating its capacity to produce good students.”

  45. It would not be part of the Ross business plan, earning forex, even if it will benefit Barbados. There is a difference. I always promise myself to ignore your silliness, but you abuse your position as chairman of the board of BU. You are a Google fake

  46. The point that was being made is that government agencies owed monies have been known to look the other way because of the other benefits they bring to the economy, in the case of the medical schools they are responsible for being foreign exchange into the country, employing people etc. Tou are truly a buffoon.

  47. Ms Ram seem to be one of the main beneficiaries of the presence of these indian medical students here in Barbados.

She and Popular supermarket I am told ha ha.They know where to shop cheap.Good for them lol.

  48. Georgie Porgie

Ironically, the DLP also mounted their election campaign on a platform of good governance, transparency and accountability……yet they were instrumental in soliciting over five medical schools to “set up shop” in Barbados, in circumstances where the Barbadians do not have any knowledge of what concessions were granted to intice these universities……..

………especially under circumstances where AUIS’s relocation to Barbados, were similar to that of Ross.

….,…and we have another situation where the former minister of education was given a job as vice chancellor of a medical school that came into Barbados with his approval.

What concessions Ronald Jones offered the school’s hierarchy and prior arrangements made to facilitate the school moving to Barbados….. in exchange for his job…..in the event his party lost the election?

What effect did AUIS’s relocating to Barbados have on the economies of St. Eustatius and St. Maarten……and what percentages of GDP, employment, and income from providing goods and services to students……were lost as a result of the move?

Did the move affect diplomatic relations between the Dutch Antilles and Barbados?

These are reasonable questions and should not be interpreted as a “tit for tat” situation.

  49. So where is Ross School of medicine going to be located?

    Any ideas?
