Barbadians join former colonies to celebrate Emancipation Day on August 1.

There can be no disagreement the Black race had to endure a form of slavery that to this day weighs heavy on the conscience of world citizens. Some will engage in a spurious rebuttal that the immoral act of chattel slavery practiced on Black people should be distilled using a logic that it was the legitimate activity of the day. What cannot be refuted is that until the Slavery Act 1833 Blacks resident in the Mother Country (England) and its colonies were regarded as chattel. Then there was the apprenticeship period where the former slave masters exploited Blacks because it was determined that it was cheaper to pay a rock bottom wage or provide room and board to the former slave in exchange for labour.  A capitalist thinking?

The benefit of slavery is that the White race was able to accrue great wealth to build an establishment that to this day supports how the so called developed world does business to the marginalizing of minority populations. More fundamentally the period of Black slavery practiced by the British empire created a White supremacy mindset the legacy of which is with us today.  Dismantling the legacy thinking to promote an equal global community continues to be a work in progress. The establishment will not yield to demands from former colonies for reparations. It is not in the nature of man to surrender riches even if ill gotten. The blogmaster’s perspective is that demand for reparation by Barbados and other former colonies is not just about compensation in the form of a money transfer – it represents the opportunity for the former colonist to record on history’s page the egregious business of slavery.

We fast forward to 1 August 2018 and so the struggle continues as we celebrate Emancipation Day. Many Black Barbadians – especially the young – will remember today as a day to recover from attending RISE. How many will participate on the Emancipation walk to Bussa statue?  How many Blacks are aware there is a walk?

To Barbadians every where, the struggle continues to nurture a just society for all. One that we can make proud for our children and future generations to cohabitate on the planet. We must never forget what our Black forefathers had to endure to support what we have been able to achieve to date.

The following is the Emancipation Day message from Sir Hilary Beckles, the Chair of the Caricom Reparations Committee:-

Emancipation Day message from Chair, CARICOM Reparations Committee

Press Release

(PRESS RELEASE VIA SNO) – We join annually with communities across the world in marking the moment in which the crime of chattel enslavement was confronted and uprooted from our existential realities. For us, the moment is August 1st; other dates are determined elsewhere and officially recognized.

Marking the moment in a celebratory fashion remains necessary despite the despicable nature of the gesture of Emancipation, legislated by Britain in 1838. It was an act in which black peoples were finally defined by Parliament as property, and their enslavers deemed entitled to compensation for property loss.

Today is an opportunity for descendants of the enslaved, and enslavers, to reflect upon the causes and consequences of these crimes against humanity, and in particular their significance on how we live today, and will in the future.

Rising up from the barbarity of bondage, we have dedicated our development energies to the advancement of democratizing social values, with a primary emphasis on building societies that are free and fair; upon platforms of multiracialism and multiculturalism.

As descendants, we celebrate the values of human decency left as an additional burden for our ancestors to carry. Every day they imagined would be an Emancipation day. They protected and projected the best tried and tested human values – joys of family life, fine spirit of community living, vitality of food security and material production, moral commitment to equity and justice, and critically the overarching, indispensable importance of freedom as the source of all happiness.

Effectively transcending and conquering the legacies of enchainment, impoverishment and racial denigration continue to elude us. Residual elements of the plantation-based past continue to shape our societies and determine their trajectories.

This year, we find it necessary to litigate the restoration of democratic rights and citizenship, illegally stripped away by the British government from thousands of Caribbean descendants rightfully living in that country since the immigration door was opened to passengers aboard Empire Windrush in 1948.

Last year, evidence of hostility against the Caribbean community by the British state erupted against the background of data, unearthed by historians, showing that the finance bond, by which the British government raised £20 million in 1834 to pay reparations to slave owners, remained active until 2015.

This fact powerfully shows that, for the British state, the slavery world persisted well into the 21st century, putting to rest its argument that “slavery was a long time ago”. These contemporary examples show how the effects of historic crimes still surround our societies. ‘Emancipation’ for us remains a work in progress and in no way can be considered a distant event that is settled and closed.

It is specifically for these reasons that we celebrate Emancipation day as a moment in which we demand reparatory justice. The Caribbean calls upon the enslaving governments of Europe, and their national institutions, all enriched and empowered by their crimes against humanity, to return to the region in order to participate in cleaning up their colonial mess. The advancement of economic growth is dependent upon it; social justice is dependent upon it; and a 21st century humanity is dependent upon it.

As we confront the future, let us be guided by Sir Arthur Lewis, who stated in 1939 that the 200 years of unpaid labour extracted by the British from the enslaved people of the Caribbean is a debt that must be repaid to their descendants. This is important, he asserted, if we are to have a fair shot at sustainable development. Pushing ahead with a self-emancipatory agenda is critical, but we must do so fully conscious of this broader context of our development efforts.

Blessings to all on Emancipation day.

This is not history, it is embarrassing White supremacist propaganda. The charitable assumption is that you post it here through ignorance, otherwise it reveals you to be a racist.

  3. The Infamous Connaught or Hell proclamation was issued on 1 May 1654,

On 14 August 1652, Cromwell began his Ethnic Cleansing of Ireland, ordering that the Irish were to be transported overseas, starting with 12,000 Irish prisoners sold to Barbados. The infamous Connaught or Hell proclamation was issued on 1 May 1654, where all Irish were ordered to be removed from their lands and relocated west of the Shannon or be transported to the West Indies. Those who have been to County Clare, a land of barren rock will understand what an impossible position such an order placed the Irish.

The Lyrics in this song says…
To Hell or Barbados, To Hell or Barbados
To Hell on Barbados we were sent

It’s a Heaven on this Earth
    A Creator’s work of art
And the sun sets o’er the sea so divine

Then a WHIPLASH LICKS MY HEELS
AND MY SCORCHED SKIN BURST AND PEELS
THOUGH MY PEOPLE WERE NOT MADE FOR THESE BURNING FIELDS

All of all your evil deeds, many still condone
But your crime of slavery goes unknown
Good men like old Wilberforce, they came far too late
Far too late to save us from the fate

I loved the Song “To Hell or Barbados We Were Sent”; it brought tears to my eyes, chills to my bones and a whole new sense of appreciation to be a Bajan and for the Courage and Fortitude of the Ancestors that runs through our Veins!

Actual Irish people are so humiliated and embarrassed by being associated with the hateful White supremacist propaganda that you are spouting that about a hundred of the most prominent Irish historians, academics and public intellectuals published an open letter to distance themselves from this nonsense and expose it to be the hateful lie that it is.

I know absolutely that your “Knowledge and Research” is much worse than ignorance… it is a deliberate and heinous White supremacist lie. It has been proven to be a lie over and over and over.

Every single professional historian in Barbados has publicly distanced themselves from this racist untruth, including the White retired professor of history Karl Watson. https://medium.com/@Limerick1914/the-imagery-of-the-irish-slaves-myth-dissected-143e70aa6e74

Don’t mind freedomcrier, probably thinks she is the only person with Irish blood, that combo of Irish/scottish/Wales runs through my bloodline in heavy percentages, but you don’t see my relatives spreading that lie and misinformation to destroy other people’s lives…..or spread misinformation in any Black Country…

    @ Freedom Crier,
I think we should both be celebrating the 1648 conspiracy of indentured servants to rebel in Barbados. At that point the Indentured servants outnumbered enslaved people in Barbados, but I believe that Karl Watson’s research shows the enslaved people making common cause with the indentured servants. We might have had a marvelous Barbados if the indentured servants had succeeded and freed the enslaved people as well.

  15. @Freedom Crier

Respect the majority Black audience on the blog and post information relevant to the fact it is Emancipation Day. We are trying to have a constructive engagement for crissakes. Let us accept that there is poliarizing behaviour along racial lines in the Barbados society. It suits the minority groups to suppress this kind of conversation but we have to discuss it to move forward. Posting your cut and paste is disrespectful. Then you will come on another blog and want to coopt ideas.

  16. @John August 1, 2018 12:34 PM
Thank you for the link to the article “THE GROWTH OF THE COTTON INDUSTRY IN AMERICA.” It entirely disproves your allegation “that the Civil War destroyed the Empire of Cotton.” It shows conclusively that after the devastation wrought by the Civil War, cotton production in the USA has regained pre-war levels as soon as 1870.

    +++++++++++++++++

The second world war destroyed the production of sugar worldwide and reduced world output from 30 million tons in the 1930’s to 15 million tons in 1945.

Yet, it recovered and today is I believe in excess of 15 million tons.

We benefitted in the economic growth the recovery engendered!!!

I guess a drowning man will clutch at a straw!!

  17. David I record my comments they are my historical records…They are at my fingertips…It is only disrespectful because it does not tow the line of going along to get along!

Here is where The Real Modern Day Slavery Lies …

I always tend to talk on the Root Cause of our ills, which produces all the issues we debate (weather intentionally or not). When we recognize the Culprit the Mirage becomes Clear and we are no longer baffled and entangled in issues of their making leaving us puzzled. Socialism/Collectivism is Serfdom; it only benefits the Elitist resulting in Tyranny and Chaos as witnessed by what is ensuing in Venezuela under Full Blown Socialism! There are different Degrees of Socialism, but it is All Socialism with guaranteed results of failure. “To say a Little Socialism is Okay is like saying A little cancer is Okay”.

Why in the first place did it get so out of hand? Eventually the System Rots and every kind of corruption emerge. I am sympathetic to suffering but we have to come to grips with the Root Cause…SOCIALISM.

Capitalism was Not the Cause of the Situation in Venezuela!!! 15% of the Populace of Venezuela are Eating from the Garbage! No Medicine and Basic Amenities.

How do you think that Socialist Governments can get money to be Socialist, they First must Take from those that Work and Produce by their Ingenuity and promise it to those who Do Not Work hard and who Do Not Employ their Ingenuity. Socialism Promises Everything, Free Healthcare, Free Housing, Free Food, Security, nowadays there is talk of Guaranteed Income…going along, Free Primary Education, Free Secondary Education, Free University Education and Jobs. What no one ever tell you is that the Working Man has to Pay for ALL of it, the Government does not Earn any Income, they take it from others, Support themselves and then they give back very little of what was yours in the first place. Can you Refuse to pay National Insurance, or Duties, or Vat or the National Social Responsibility Tax (NRS Levy) or the Taxes on Gasoline, or the Taxes on Electricity and All the other Endless Taxes including your House and Land Tax?

Government does Not Work for you…you Exist to work for them!!

Socialism never, ever works, it Impoverishes, Dehumanizes and Kills people. Socialist Never Learn from History. They Say They Are All Different… Communism, Leninism, Stalin-ism, Maoism, Leftism, Progressive-ism or “Democratic Socialism”, They Aren’t, Names Only Change to Suit the Times!

Most of South America is under Socialist Governments…“The Goal of Socialism is Communism”. Vladimir Lenin.

Until We Get This Straight we will always be beguiled…. “Socialism is Atheism Masquerading as Political Philosophy”.

The reason 1648 is a watershed year in Barbadian history is because that’s the year the Quakers appeared on the scene!!

After 1648, Barbados should have destroyed itself as diverse groups were brought here from diverse lands.

The Irish hated the English and the Welsh hated the English, the Africans hated each other and could not have been said to have been happy to have been brought here …. well ,,, except that Africans escaped being sent to Arab lands … minus significant manly parts.

Must have been a relief to have been in the consignment to the Caribbean.

Hatred should have destroyed Barbados back then … but it didn’t.

So, one has to ask, what is the antidote for hatred?

So PLT, you may be on to something here!!

  20. If you are an authority on why we have the problem of slavery and will locate every issue on the blog into a socialist or communist bucket, carry on smartly.

  21. How do we address the underlying racial I sues in the Barbados society John.

  22. If we are Talking about Emancipation and If you think we are Free Think Again…

If you think Barbadians like you and me are free in this wonderful Island of ours, think again!

Do you own your house and property or do you have to pay taxes on what you own and if you do not pay that made up tax; that tax is used to sell what is yours to pay it. Even when you die your inheritors have to continue paying the tax so who do you assume are the owners of what you IMAGINE to be yours?

Do you pay a drivers license? After the first time you sit the driver’s exam, why do we need to still pay for it each year?·
We all have to pay NIS. Why? We start work at 18 years old, work until 67 soon to be 70, (we pay 10% and our employer pays more than 10%). We pay over 20% of our wages for all our working life, for 50 years to get a 50% (approx.) pension for 7 years soon to be 5 years (life expectancy of 75 years average.) You are paying for 50 years to get half of your weekly wage for 7 years? Does this seem right?

Remember when VAT was introduced it was supposed to reduce taxes, now every tax imaginable in fostered on us (Vat went up and in Trinidad Vat gone down)·

You can think of your own over reach of government taxation in your arena and consider the Root cause of such a System of Governance.

We in Barbados have adopted a system of Governance that is Stifling the Nation, literally taking the wind out of its Sails. My hope is to empower the individual because Collectivism is a system that values the group more than the individual. Under this system, a ruling authority arbitrarily sets common moral, social, and economic aims and, to achieve those aims, dictates the standards and rules by which individuals live and work.

Socialism abounds and prospers at the expense of our nation. Socialism is Economic Cannibalism.

Socialism has its tentacles like a giant Mantel over the earth and we on the Isles of the Sea are not exempt!

It is a slow process of Rot, Understand that the plan is to “CONTROL AND RULE BY WAY OF THE EXTRACTION OF THE PEOPLES WEALTH WHILE ENCROACHING ON THEIR FREEDOM THROUGH BURDENSOME REGULATIONS”.

    Population
    2018 1,287,920,518……..BILLION PEOPLE

so which part of the Middle East are these 1.2 billion African people, as slaves, the ones who were not kidnapped and brought to the Caribbean???

The antidote for hatred John, is justice. This is because justice removes the underlying cause of the hatred. We need to distinguish between hated and fear however. The Irish hated the English because of the cruelty inflicted upon them, but the English feared the Irish because they well knew that they had treated them unjustly.

So don’t pretend we live in a symmetrical world where each group just hates the other for no reason. Justice is the only solution to both the hatred and the fear.

In my own opinion reparations are not about guilt… they are about Justice. If someone steals from me it is of no consequence to me whether they feel guilty, I will seek Justice. So it is with reparations.

The British Crown paid 40% of their annual budget to the enslavers as a consequence of the Slavery Abolition Act 1833; they felt no guilt but they paid to achieve a political objective.

The British Crown owes Barbados reparations and it does not matter in the least whether they feel guilty… it is simply our job to configure a political reality such that they pay to achieve their political objective.

How do we address the underlying racial I sues in the Barbados society John.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++

    It is in the mind!!!

When our ancestors came from Africa they brought their fair share of self hatred and loathing of each other.

Remember, the Trans Saharan Slave Trade was in effect for a millennia or more before the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade.

Slavery was part of the culture of Africa long before Europeans reached there.

Islam came on the scene in the 7th century and spread through North Africa to the West Coast.

The horrors of the Trans Saharan Trade are a matter of record.

It would be natural for our ancestors to hate one another and themselves.

Here is an example of the kind of baggage that went with being African prior to the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade.

If you listen you will realise that much of the invective we hear preached by our politicians and historians directed at “Europeans” was a part of the culture.

The antidote to hatred is love.

That is what Christianity is all about.

This is what I think prevented Barbados from disintegration after 1648.

It can’t be pure coincidence that the Quakers appeared at that time.

So I go back to my suggestion from earlier …. family and Christian values.

Attack the infection of the mind and the racial issues will disappear!!

  42. How does one attack the infection of the mind John?

  43. “The British Crown owes Barbados reparations and it does not matter in the least whether they feel guilty.”

Who cares if they feel guilty or not, when did they ever care about anyone’s feelings.

The island was a world renowned clearing house for slaves, for the last 60 years it’s been used as a clearing house to exploit and oppress the mentally enslaved..

You are mistaken John. The opposite of hatred is love, but opposite is not the same thing as antidote. No amount of love has changed the hatred of White supremacists like the KKK. Without Justice as an antidote love is entirely without the power to combat hatred.

I know that you have suffered from the hatred of people in your extended family… your love will not cure them; they need to be brought to Justice for the things they have done.

Since you are a Christian, why don’t you spend the remainder of Emancipation Day meditating on the role of Christianity in the enslavement of people of African descent in Barbados. The plantation owners went out of their way to make sure that Christian evangelists like the Quakers could not convert Black people to the faith. They blamed the attempted rebellion of 1675 on Quaker proselytising efforts, and eventually sought to drive Quakers off the island.
