@Ping Ping
What is the reason for caution with Gibson’s appointment other than he has shown himself to be incompetent?
-
Did Atherley name his second Senator?
-
David
LOL!!! -
@Sargeant
Not yet.
The two temporary Senators are sitting, Bradshaw and Williams. We should not that the GG’s pick of an Independent Senator Alphia Wiggins.
-
So far I haven’t seen or heard one credible reason why the amendment shouldn’t be passed.
@Hants
As I understand it if you are a Barbadian citizen you are a Barbadian citizen whether by birth, descent or naturalization and is entitled to be appointed to the Senate.
-
Senator Franklyn giving trouble in the Senate.
-
Go Caswell..give them hell..lol, we don’t want any softies in the senate.
As long as you are a citizen of the island and meet the requirements, dual citizen or no, there is no reason you cannot take a seat in parliament…
….incompetent Mara held one for years, being incompetent is not a requirement…and yet.
-
You can also register as a bajan citizen.
-
@David
What’s keeping back Atherley? Is he waiting on instructions from someone? Listening to Senator Sands, maybe this is the first time that the words “navel strings” were uttered in debate in the Senate. -
“The basic concept is that our nation’s economic development will arise from our people’s educational and cultural development, and vice versa.”
A silly statement, when you look at the results / evidence. Education is great, but education in what???? If the world needs more technological advance thinkers and entrepreneurs and we are educating sociologist, historians and economists then education I am afraid is waisted.
Education is only relevant with respect to the jobs that are required or are in need
-
sorry for the typos “wasted” instead of “waisted” and “technologically” instead of “technological”

Ping Pong
You’re free to disagree. Interestingly, the residency for an MP appears to be at the discretion of the Parliament. -
There was some discussion on today’s Brasstacks program on the future of the DLP and whether Freundel should hold on to the leadership until August.
Up pops the 95 year old Astor Watts to announce that Freundel will do so and that an announcement will be made shortly.
Just imagine ………..after the severe redwash they got………they have not learnt a thing……the people were fed up and treated you dems just the way the dems treated the populace………instead of letting the younger blood come forward……..a 95 year old man is the spokesperson on the future of the party.
Wuhloss! …………….that must be Mia’s fault as well.
-
Do any of you think that Rawdon Adams has some special qualification to be a senator other than he is the son of the
former PM Tom and grandson of Grantley ADAMS ?
What is he going to contribute that will dramatically change the demise of the economy of Barbados.
All the spin and bullspit does not fool me.
-
Does anyone know why the Senate sits around a desk and not like the House of Assembly?
-
@ Ping Pong
There is no requirement to have a specified level of education, income, property holdings or level of attainment in one’s occupation. Just two simple requirements and it is proposed to remove one primarily to facilitate two specific individuals. I am interested in hearing why this requirement should be removed.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Because the BLP and DLP both suffer from the identical malady….
The inability to focus on and deal with, the REAL issues.One therefore changed the rules to get their personal CJ
…and now we are seeing the other change to get their personal senators.…besides, BOTH parties are telling us that (as Bushie always said) Bajans are a bunch of brass bowls – who are generally incapable of performing such roles. We therefore NEED to grab the few available from over and away – even if we have to change our established laws to do so….
Did Arthur not seek ‘first world status’ by changing our laws to attract ‘high net worth persons’ to Barbados?Simplistic ideas that people like you (and the moron Bush Tea) are wont to promote – such as seeking to find and nurture available LOCAL talent ….by placing a national focus on education, MERIT, creativity and performance …are outdated and wasteful apparently.
Why we would need some Bajan who has not been living among us …and who is a stranger to our present conditions, to represent and defend our interests in our Senate …can only make sense to a mind that appreciates it own brass bowlic status.
Now if we made it possible for such persons to bring NEEDED technology; to bring required culture changes; to provide peer review of local ideas presented …and contributions of such nature….. FINE.
But needed to speak for and represent Bajans? … who are the end product of 60 years of free education…???
Hello…???!!Give up Ping Pong….
Face the fact that you are living in BB-land. -
Look at an immediate cost savings!………….all constituency councils have been disbanded!
Who hoo!!!!!!
-
Senator Franklyn was the only one to vote against.
-
@ Enuff
the residency for an MP appears to be at the discretion of the Parliament.
+++++++++++++++++++++++
Boss, why don’t you leave Ping Pong alone…
You are no slouch, ..but you are not in Pong’s pay grade yuh hear?An MP is an altogether DIFFERENT situation.
MPs FORMULATE and IMPLEMENT policy. They make the laws.We should actively seek out the BEST possible resources to be our MPs…. Bushie even suggests that we HEAD-HUNT (advertise, interview, short-list, then select and put on contract) such talent to run our national Corporation called HMS Titanic Barbados.
They could come from Timbuktu and Afghanistan for all the Bushman cares… if they are GOOD as shiite..
The SENATE on the other hand, is our ‘National Supervisory Committee’.
Its job is to keep a tight leash on these MP hotshots and to PROTECT the rights and interests of citizens from these power hungry maniacs.Such senate watchdogs MUST understand the NATURE of the bowls that they are intended to protect….
Get it yet?
-
Rawdon Adams is the CEO of a company that could hugely successful and he can contribute toe Barbados by expanding
the company and creating jobs.
-
We want Caswell to keep them in check, therefore let him be the dissenting voice..
-
Senator Franklyn was the only one to vote against.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Given our history, that makes Caswell as special (and likely as RIGHT) as Bushie always proposed…
Brass will be brass…. -
Amendment to the Constitution passed by the Senate and sent back to the Lower House.
-
Bushman…you will be so thankful later because of this vote.
-
@Prodigal
Constituency Councils were a waste -
I understand from a usual reliable source that board members of the Barbados Port Inc were summoned to a board meeting three days before the election. They were not given the agenda before hand, only told that the agenda would be presented when they got there.
When members arrived and read the contract, they questioned why the rush and if it was morally right three days before an election to commit a new government to the terms and conditions of the contract.
There were many flaws as they perused the documents and they asked that the process be delayed to correct the errors. I was told that they got a lawyer to quickly correct the errors and the day before the election, another meeting was summoned………..the members did not turn up. So it would appear as if the last ditch effort to sell out our port may have been averted by a few who at least had a conscience………..
Let’s hope so!
-
Caswell like he is on every committee……..the man is going to be very busy!
-
See…………..10 million dollars right there as a result of getting rid of the DLP cesspools called constituency councils…….Mia only has to find 7 million more to send poor people children to UWI this coming academic year!
Winning!!!!!!!

June 8, 2018 4:22 PMAmendment to the Constitution passed by the Senate and sent back to the Lower House.
+++++++++++++++++++++++
Does the senate have 21 seated member?
Does it even exist or was it a talk shop?
-
What exactly was the change to the constitution?
Specify and it will tell you if it was a kite flying exercise!!
-
@Hants
Do not focus on the personalities, focus on the long game and the Bills future importance, growing up did you think that you would spend half your life outside of Barbados? Yet you still consider yourself very much a Bajan no matter how long you live away from the island. You may travel with a different Passport but that Passport always lists your country of Birth ( I may be speculating perhaps you travel with a Barbados Passport), the Bill just passed the Senate so it’s all academic .
-
Does anyone know why the Senate sits around a desk and not like the House of Assembly?
+++++++++++++++++++
I would opine to show clearly that an opposition MUST exist in the House of Assembly for a Senate to even exist!!
It emphasizes the DIVISIN into two, the Do’s and the Don’ts.
Once the House of Assembly is properly constituted and fertile, it then produces the Senate which is a coming together of mature minds to reason together who are supposedly above the political fry … and sprats in the House of Assembly!!
The Senate can stop the Hose of Assembly dead in its tracks.

What’s keeping back Atherley?++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Reverend Joe fall way bad in doing what he did.
You want he to ded?
Give de man a chance let he wrestle wid he conscience!!
-
Prodigal Son
while I am happy to see the end of constituency councils, did you read the BLP manifesto? “Elected People’s Assemblies” are proposed!!!So will it be a case of saving $10 million today and spending $20 million tomorrow?
-
Bush Tea
Not to overstate this issue, I am reminded of situations when Barbados chooses an athlete to represent Barbados at the Olympics or some such international event BUT that athlete was not born in Barbados, does not live in Barbados, does not train or compete in Barbados and could not find Nelson’s statue without a guide but whose parent was a Bajan.
-
Bushie
I need not be in anyone pay grade. I keep telling you I only talk about what I know; hence I don’t behave like an ingredient and put muhself in everything. McConney is coming to manage the change to a technology-based government service (I hope RPA is part of the plan) and Adams to add some knowledge on Finance, especially fintech. We are not talking about exporting golden apples Bushie.🤣🤣 -
@Sargeant,
I always travel with a Canadian passport that lists Barbados as my country of birth.
The point I was trying to make is that there hundreds of Bajans living in Barbados who could be senators.
I have no problem with government fast tracking an overseas Bajan with specialist skills to help solve real problems.
Then again there are no serious problems in Barbados that Bajans living inBarbados cannot solve.
-
That ten million would go towards to fatten the bellies of the 26 cabinet members which in the overall would cost more than the constituency counsel to fund.just
-
All the blp supporters love Caswell. But not no more.
-
Wait, anybody hear from Ex MOF Sinckler?
The Redwash lick the mout outta he or what? -
What are the students doing with their UWI grade?
Becoming public servants and draining forex? Or what? There are NO jobs in Barbados for academics besides the public service anymore.
After the default most jobs in the offshore financial sector and in the financial industry will relocate to other islands.
Barbados needs farmers, no lazy laggards with pseudo grades hanging around in suits in A/C cooled rooms.
-
I am one of those who believes that Rawdon Adams is entitled to nothing more than what the average Barbadian is entitled to. He gets no free passes or no amended constitution, What he brings to the table is not immediately obvious. What is an anachronism and needs to be stomped out is one law for the Medes and another for the Persians.
-
Why is there a focus on Adams, McConney or Wiggins for that matter. The GG and Prime Minister selected the Barbadians they prefer to do the job. The Constitution was changed by the government of the day with the majority to accommodate.
-
Ah guess Adams is just going to have to prove himself to the population, produce progressive results, produce some bang for the taxpayer’s bucks…….just like all the MPs and everyone else should, if not, he should not be lingering around or loitering at taxpayer’s expense, none of them should..
That era has passed…be productive or get out or get out.
The majority population on the island has paid very dearly for 52 years to learn.
-
Why is there a focus on Adams, McConney or Wiggens for that matter.

Flying kites to see what can be gotten away with.
Keith Mitchell had to do it the first time too … now he is on to Number 3 and Grenadians are numbed to the inevitable!!

The inconvincible establishment on the island:
Tee White,
“rejects the racist premise, on which the entire IMF outlook is based, that we Bajans are living above our station.”
Nobody forced Barbadians to buy so many Mercedes Benz, SUVs, Samsung washers , to shop in Miami and to have a freaky holiday in Disneyland etc pp. All the luxury of the so-called “educated” Barbadian middle-class is based on debts.
The productivity of the average Barbados employee is NEXT TO ZERO and everybody knows that. The employees and civil servants I know work from 9 AM to 3 PM and have at least 1 hour break down. You obviously never built a house and never tried to start a business in Barbados. Otherwise you knew that everything takes twice as long in Barbados as promised. Or you are simply used to the low quality services here.
And just for the protocol: When I mean Barbadian I also mean Barbadians of European decent. The local habits are not confined to any ethnic group. Not at all. And they are no DNA or “culture of Barbados” thing since I know some cases where local Barbadians trump every workforce in North America and Europe. It is just a bad habit.
So stop talking postcolonial nonsense. Thinking that you can have a big consumer party 20 years long and you do not need to pay for your party will neither convince the foreign creditors nor the IMF.
-
I would like to remind fellow bloggers that it is not only Rawdon Adams, but also Kay McConney who is actually suppose to take up a ministetial post. Additionally, Adams has been living in Barbados for nearly 12 months, while Ms.McConney still lives overseas. Why then the focus on Adams? How does the Medes and Persians analogy come into play, when the truth is that non-resident Bajans are being treated differently? I dun wid dis. The amendment done pass.

I haven’t read through all of the posts on this matter but so far it seems to me that most of the comments are looking only at one aspect of a Senator which, while it is of fairly high importance, is not of overarching importance in this matter. i.e. the Senator must be a knowledgeable person of more than passing experience in some important current or potential aspect of the Life of the Country and one who is capable of contributing meaningfully to the debates on any relevant matter passed by the House and therefore can contribute sensibly to the vetting of the general suitability of matters to be passed into law.
The typical Senator therefore serves as a useful check or balance on any matter that might have passed the House of Assembly and if there are numerically enough of them with like mind or convictions, they can indeed send Bills back down to the House for reconsideration and possibly correction of errors not spotted or ignored by the members of the House in their passing of the Bills.
There is another type of Senator whose job is somewhat more involved than the typical Senator. Rawdon Adams and Ms McConney fit in that category. Their main function is that of a Minister, who has not won a seat in the Lower House and who can only carry out their ministerial duties if they are first appointed as Senators. A minister who has not won a House seat must be also a Senator as far as I am aware. MInisters must be either Senators or Elected members of the House.
I suspect that the debate should be about Adam’s and McConney’s suitability to handle the portfolios that they have been identified as slated to fill rather than their eligibility to be members of the Senate.
Are any of us aware of any thing that disqualifies either of them from filling the ministerial posts, or of any other qualified Bajan candidates that fit our expectations of what the PM has in her mind for those ministerial posts that surpass the given credentials and experience of these born Bajans? I think that none of us are in a position to 2nd guess exactly what the PM requires from these candidates and what is her strategic plan for using these posts to fit at the forefront of our short term and long term development plans.
I can understand the fear that some have of the seeming resurrecting of the Adam’s dynasty but I think that the minor amendment of the Constitution that has been passed to facilitate the achievement of the Government’s short term goals also embraces a long term forward-looking correction that will allow any Born Bajan in future to be appointed a Senator and bring any special skills he or she has to bear on our development.
