Nelson statue defaced on the eve of Independence Day.

THE LAST SUNDAY SUN Editorial, No Good Reason To Deface Statue, is a lost opportunity for Nation Publishing to contribute positively to a conversation among Barbadians about the history and future together of those who are categorised as black or white. Make no mistake: this controversy is about nothing less.

It is not sufficient for our premier national newspaper to hide behind what reads like a schoolmarm’s condemnation of the bad behaviour of splashing paint on the statue. This is not about the paint; it is not even about the statue. This is about who we are as a people.

The perpetrator is not from among the elite, but their misspellings aside, the handwritten placard they left is perfectly eloquent: “This RACIST white supremacist who would rather die than see black people free stands proudly in our nation’s capital NELSON MUST GO!! Fear not Barbados the people have spoken. Politicians have failed us. HAPPY INDEPENCE (sic).”

I was born to privilege and I have led a privileged life: Harrison College education, a postgraduate degree, a Canadian passport as well as a Bajan one. It humbles and shames me that it was left to a person with none of my advantages in life to speak this truth to power. I hope that they read this so that I can express my gratitude. Thank you.

Talk about race

We have been trying to talk about this since before Independence. The Mighty Gabby sang about the pain that it causes more than 30 years ago. What will it take for us to have an honest conversation about history and race in Barbados? This perpetrator splashed some non-toxic, environmentally-friendly paint that caused no permanent damage at all and took less than three hours to clean off. Are we waiting until some impassioned fool imitates the Irish who took high explosives to their statue of Nelson?

Your editorial complains about “distortions previously fed to us that [. . .] generate extreme feelings among some sections of our people”. Someone who didn’t know better might conclude that the placard contained distortions – it does not.

Yes, there are distortions circulating on social media and Nation Publishing should have set the record straight: no, Nelson did not own slaves or engage personally in the slave trade; yes, the statue was erected to celebrate Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar by racists who believed in white supremacy; no, Trevor Marshall’s assertion that “all researchers today regard Horatio Nelson as one the main factors why the British slave trade was not abolished in 1790, but in 1807 after his death in 1805” is not supported by the evidence; yes, Nelson was a racist believer in white supremacy, as were the vast majority of his British contemporaries, even among those supporting Emancipation.

We have witnessed an outpouring on social media seasoned with anger and pain. The largest ingredient was the lack of knowledge and understanding of our history. Among the conversations that I engaged in there were a few which gave me great hope – where I interacted with white Bajans who started out vehemently opposed to moving the statue and making comments that veered into overt racism, but after a dialogue agreed that the statue was in the wrong place, was offensive to their fellow Bajans, and should probably be relocated to the museum with appropriate interpretive signage to explain the context of its existence.

I think it is the duty of Nation Publishing to pay attention to this national conversation beyond a facile condemnation of defacing the statue. We need you to bring professional journalism to the critical issues that are being discussed. Examine the issues; talk to the experts; analyse the pros and cons.

This is a matter for public education, but it will not be solved by staging an opinion poll or a popularity contest. These are issues of right and wrong that strike at the core of who we are as a people, as a nation.

We need you to take a stand. Please lend your authority to the cries to do what is right and relocate the statue of Nelson to a more appropriate venue.

  1. Hal if you can’t walk and also chew gum then I suspect everyone will understand if you just sit on the park bench with your Wriggleys wrapper.

And while you wiggle on the bench consider why it’s more interesting to debate the activities of the most powerful man and nation compared to a petty theft in Bridgetoen Barbados.

I saw a report the other day that Mike Jordan was on a beach in Bdos…That was interesting too …but I paused because I hoped that the report said nothing about all the sewerage flowing bout de place.

So yes we do have to fix our issues asap but we still can learn from others’ activities.

    BTW, you live where again!!

  2. Apply the standard pareto principle to the numbers.

Sessions ran unopposed in Alabama in 2014 and got almost 800K votes.

In 2014 the Democrats didn’t even bother to contest it.

Moore got about 600K this time around.

Jones got 1.5% more and won.

Total voters a bit over 1.2 million.

20% of the voters is 240K which is about what Moore/Republicans lost.

The Democrats could have expected 40% of the pie which is about 480K.

They got just over what Moore got, so about an extra 120K.

So there are about 360K voters who either did not vote or voted Democrat instead.

Strange was the candidate the GOP originally endorsed.

    Trump too!!!

But he lost in the primaries to Moore.

I think the voters are saying to the Republican Party that they are not happy with the support it is giving Trump and are willing to vote against it.

The allegations also impacted the outcome because Alabama is the most religious state in America.

People prayed and voted according to how a far higher power guided them.

I read the 360K as saying we are not happy with the GOP and will do something about it and also, we are not happy with the allegations.

I think the lesson is applicable to most democratic societies with a two party system, voters are not to be trifled with!!

Will be interesting to see what happens in Barbados which like the US has a “Two” party system which has failed.

The difference is Trump, Barbados does not have a Trump!!

  4. I reckoned that if Moore had won, he would have won by a landslide.

If he had won, it would have meant no one believed the allegations AND the electorate was ok with the GOP.

I reckoned if he had won he would have got the 800K votes which would have been about 200k more than Jones.

As it turned out he lost.

Polling people in an electorate who are voting conscience and want to make a statement is useless, they are going to have fun and make a statement in that exercise too!!

Polling works on the 80% of the people who are not going to shift allegiance no matter what, but the 20% who determine the outcome ….. waste of time!!

Polling will only confirm the 80/20 pareto principle.

Brexit, Trump and now this confirms the obvious.

  5. https://www.nytimes.com/elections/results/alabama

The turnout in the Presidential race in 2016 in Alabama was over 2 million, almost double that of the senate race!!!

Trump got 1.3 million, Clinton about 800K.

A lot of Republicans did not vote.

  6. … and a lot of Democrats did not vote either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Lesson …. listen to what the electorate is saying!!

  8. Same goes for Barbados.

Suspect there might be a small turnout in 2018, unless a Trump happens to appear!!

“People prayed and voted according to how a far higher power guided them..”

So who or what is/are this/these “far higher power(s)” which guided them?

Because the higher power that guided those who voted for Moore cannot be the same “higher power” which guided those who voted for Jones.

So who is the go(o)d and who is the (d)evil in this political chess game between your Yahweh and Shaytan?

  10. @John

People prayed and voted according to how a far higher power guided them
    +++++++++
Are they praying at the same church?

    Is Moore preying or praying?

Is MLK’s statement just as true today as it was in 1960?

  11. There is another key aspect to elections, funding!!

All you have to do is to listen to Donna Brasile and you will find that the Democrats are in debt big time and have been for a while, since she came on!!

Fund raised to finance Obama were kept by Obama and the Party suffered.

Google fund raising and you will see that things are not going so good with the Democrats.

Then look at what the Democrats spent and did in Alabama to achieve what they did.

In 2014, they simply did not compete against Sessions …. waste of resources.

What they have done now is pour resources into an election to achieve a cosmetic result.

About half of the voters that appeared in the Presidential race appeared in the Senate race.

If you listen to the focus group you will see Moore did not campaign!!!

In fact, a big deal was made of his disappearance on the internet!!!

So the Republicans did not spend much, shades of Trump and Clinton!!

I may be wrong but it looks almost as if the Democrats were set up to gamble their meagre resources!!

In WWII when Hitler was facing defeat, at Christmas 1944 he took his best men and equipment holding off the Russians and threw them into a last gamble against the Americans in the West.

For a short while he won, but the gamble was defeated.

The result was that the Russians were in Berlin by May 1945.

So, funding is a key aspect of the result which the media will skirt!!

  12. So what’s the lesson for Barbados about political party funding?

Ask your self which it took so long for the GOB, which had advised people to invest in CLICO in the first place, now all of a sudden can find $91 million to return just cents in the dollar to them!!!

Where are the other cents going?

How can we have the mess on the South Coast and the blame be put on lack of funds?

  13. Bottomline, this is a red state that Moore was unable to win. The Republicans could run a dog inst:ead of Moore and would have won.

    +++++++++++++++++

    Would should be should!!!

    Absolutely true!!!!

    Alabama remains a red state!!

… and the Dems are a lot poorer!!

  16. The Republicans have a 51/49 advantage now in the Senate.

Next year in the mid terms I believe the DEMS will be defending 3 times the number of seats as the Republicans and 10 of them are in states Trump won!!

That is the time to really pay attention!!!

The DEMS are committing suicide over sexual harassment to be able to say Trump should do it too!!

Schumer just put a stop to it but will it be too late!!!

He is apparently the victim of sexual harassment allegations in which the complaint has been shown to be fictional!!!

This is comedy as its glorious best!!!

  17. Trump is playing if I understand it right “the long game”!!

Miller should already have this info….enough with the book of white lies and plagarizing everything from the African continent.

“An African Studies Lecturer From The University Of Ghana Claims The Bible Is A False Book. By Kwaku Darko Dec 11 2017

    This is Dr. Obadele Kambon.
He has referred to the Bible as a false book wholly based on plagiarized texts, lies and deceit.
According to him, biblical concepts, doctrines and text were copied from the ‘Egyptian pyramid text’, ‘the coffin texts’, ‘Egyptian book of coming forth by day’ and the ‘instruction of Amenemope’ which form some of the world’s oldest spiritual texts.

They form the sources of Christian concepts like death and resurrection of the holy saviour, Immaculate Conception, the idea of judgment after death, adding that, the Ten Commandments was derived from Ma’at, an African ethical and moral system which was made up of 42 spiritual laws.

He made these claims on Xlive Africa online radio’s ‘Good morning Africa’ show on Monday.

    In defending his claims, he said;

We can still go and read it carved in stones, Over 5,000 years ago, there’s a depiction of the Immaculate Conception in the temple of Seti I, also Imhotep overseeing the birth of the “savior” in temples in Kemmet (Egypt).

The adulteration of the real story was during the Hyksos (people of mixed race from Europe and Asia) invasion of Egypt in 1700 BC.

Dr. Kambon cited direct imitations of ancient texts in the Bible with examples from Amenomope chapter 6 “Remove not the landmark from the bounds of the field….and violate not the widows’ boundary” which was copied in Proverbs 23 vs: 10 as “Remove not the widows landmark and enter not into the field of the fatherless”.

Also, Amenomope chapter 1 “Give thine ears, hear the words that are said, give thine heart to interpret them” copied in proverbs 23: 12 as “Apply thine heart unto instruction and thine ears to the words of knowledge”. As well as, “Psalm 104 taken wholesale in 1000bce from what Akhenaten’s hymn written in 1353 BCE.”

    Furthermore, he said;

Take the story of the parting of the sea for instance and that you can find it in the story of the Golden lotus which dates back to Seneferu who was the father of Khufu who built the great pyramid in the 4th dynasty.

The Lecturer added that translations were made from Egyptian text to Hebrew and words like Yah, an Egyptian deity of the moon formed the root word of the Hebrew God ’Yaweh’.

He finally encouraged Africans to move away from believing fairy tales and beliefs to deal with historical documentation only.

“Our evidence is carved in stone, unlike the Christians who are unable to back their stories and to learn more because all the problems that we talk of in our society are the calculated and end result of an intentional process of not letting you know anything as an African”.

    (H/T: Sultan Kilima Bina Damu)”

  21. Have you read it yourself?

    Ok.

I haven’t either, at least in its entirety but it sure makes good reading.

Every day some trial arises and I say to myself now where did I see this before?

    Always, in the Bible.

May not be able to remember the Verse, Chapter and Book but I always find it.

Racism is a white creation, it spread like a cancer across the earth, the destructiveness of it is still evident today, it’s now a disease of the mind after centuries of societal use, embedded into cultures, because it is still being practiced centuries later, I dont know why you would be surprised to find nonwhites practicing racism when it has been a steady diet and staple practiced on generations of people for centuries.

Besides, I too am married to someone white though he thinks he is black…dont ask….I am always being called a racist on here, but they get it so mixed up it’s not even worth bothering about, I dont feel not one drop of hate coming from anyone on BU…frustration yes, but that is their thing, not mine.

  47. Why is Senator Gillibrand’s name suddenly coming up?

Why did Trump pull her name out of the blue?

I suspect it is to do with the current hot topic, Sexual Harassment.

Way back, when she first stood for public office the incumbent was a Republican named John Sweeney.

He was expected to retain his seat.

Just before the election Sweeney’s wife was supposed to have called 911 claiming her husband was beating her … according to the press.

It turned out to be a hoax,

Sweeney lost and blamed the now Senator Gillibrand.

Trump has focused a spotlight on her!!!

Look at Moore and his problems, out of the blue, claims of sexual harassment.

By the time 2018 mid terms roll around all the questionable Democratic tactics will have been highlighted.

It does means tho that this scholar has some disturbing views and (2) that outside his field of study he displays a pitiful lack of reasoning and logical thought.

Superior intellect in itself NEVER infuses a person with a better moral fibre or for that matter better common sense.

It just gives them better tools for success.
