  1. The Air products project is a total mess
Behind schedule and now in excess of $US 500 million
The gasifier doesn’t work and the supplier Alter NRG are only an adviser to airproducts they have nothing to do with the plants design or process guarentees
( nice contract if you can get it)
Airproducts are not in the electricity game they are in the gas and hydrogen cell r&d game
They were plagued by drsign and union issues

  2. And major resulting construction delays
You cannot compare this project to our WTE project .
Air products have the power of money and a huge balance sheet to support this endeavour.

  3. If it fails it will only be a blip on their balance sheet
Our project will have a major impact to our grid and the economy of the island

  4. The professor mouthings not going to scare away tourist if his PR strategy is built on FEAR and delivered to an open market to breed disconten will not work that strategy has failed. to convince even with the best fear mongering the enviromentalist have been able to muster up against states building WTE plant and furthermore ongoing construction of these plants are on the increase and none of these projects have shown not to have a clean track record of safety and has been a cause of detering tourist any where. The strength of these WTE plants lies in there capabilities to save and meet the high demands of negative enviromental challenges like garbage and high energy cost .These are the burning issues which the enviromentalist cannot deny and people world wide have decided upon in a positive manner

  5. ac,

Can you answer why would your government enter into a contract to buy back all the electricity generated from this project when it does not own an electricity plant?

All you do on this thread is pile on a lot of garbage…………to distort the truth on the corruption associated with this mind blowing project!

  6. What safety stats are u talking about
There are no plants built of this size or scale.
Anything in China (all of smaller scale
)were built with chiseese methodology where safety is of no consequence .
This thing will be built by contractors who have never done anything of this scale or complexity everyone involved in this technology will be cutting their teeth on our island.
The safe running of this plant post construction if it ever gets built will be a crap shoot as there is no historical data
Even Alter NRG got out of the front line of this yet to be proven technology by selling out to harvester a massive Chinese group.
All the vultures come out when the smell of death or debt in our case permiates the air.

  7. If it walks like duck, and looks like a duck, it’s probably a duck. Cahill looks like a paper company, registered in 2012, never did a WTE project,( or any project for that matter) unknown Directors, introduced to the Bdos Govt by a British Real Estate Company, and within a year , has landed a contract for US 350 million ! If you were writing a fiction novel it would be hard to come up with a more intriguing and interesting story. But by God, it’s true. The Government bought into this scam hook line and stinker ! This story is not going away, no matter how much our very vocal PM chooses to ignore it. He is , after all, in charge of Town and country Planning, and this project cannot go ahead without his approval. Will he be so stupid to do it? I think not… But then again , he is acting a bit weird these days.

  8. 3 MORE YEARS?
Controversial Cahill Energy project unlikely to begin before 2018

Added by Barbados Today on July 16, 2015.
    Saved under Energy, Local News

Thereโ€™s uncertainty surrounding the date for the start of the controversial Cahill Energy Project, and it could be at least three years before it materializes.

Thatโ€™s according to Kerry McKenna, Practice Leader in Gasification and Coals to Liquids at Hatch โ€“ the Honour Engineer for Cahill Energy โ€“ who explained that designs for the project were still ongoing.

Speaking from his office in Mississauga, Canada this morning, McKenna told Barbados TODAY that due
to the complexity and nature of the venture, it could take between three to six years to complete the waste-to-energy project.

โ€œThese projects vary in length. As you go through the engineering and design phases, they take a few years to design, and then there is also financing steps which sometimes delay these type of projects, so it could be anywhere from three years to five or six years depending on how many bumps happen to occur,โ€ McKenna revealed.

โ€œThere are a lot of factors and itโ€™s a big window, but there are a lot of things that can still happen . . . but a concerted timeframe would be anywhere from three to six years.โ€

The technology engineer stressed that there had been no agreement on a start-up date for the project.

โ€œIโ€™m not aware of any confirmed date. There are a bunch of engineering steps that are going to be needed to be progressed through, so we are still doing a lot of design work and selecting the final technologies and things like that.

โ€œThere needs to be an environmental assessment and a permitting process that needs to go through. So all those steps that we are still getting to, create some uncertainty as to exactly how long it will take in terms of the time for constructing,โ€ McKenna noted, stressing that this was typical for projects of this nature.

However, during a town hall meeting at the Lester Vaughan School on Monday night, the former professor of Chemistry
at St Lawerence University of New York, Paul Connett, suggested that a waste-to-energy plant in Barbados was unlikely to become a reality.

โ€œDonโ€™t get too scared, because theyโ€™re not going to build the stupid thing. It wonโ€™t happen, either because of the legal aspects, or the people of Barbados just wonโ€™t stand for it,โ€ Connett told the packed audience gathered for the event, organized by the Future Centre Trust.

โ€œBefore I came to Barbados, I had no knowledge of Barbados,โ€ Connett said, in an attempt to emphasize his neutrality. โ€œI have no interest in the politics here [or] the political parties, I have no axe to grind.

โ€œI am just going to give you what I believe, based upon 30 years of studying waste management.โ€

Connett, who is a Professor Emeritus of Chemistry, and author of the book, Zero Waste Solution โ€“ Unthrashing the Planet One Community at a Time, suggested that a waste conservation solution would be a more suitable option for Barbados.

โ€œWe want model solutions, and my dream for Barbados is to help this island become a model for the whole Caribbean. We want Barbados to show that an island can develop a circular economy, and persuade not only the rest of the Caribbean to follow suit and cooperate on this, but also to be a model for every island in the world,โ€ he insisted.

โ€œIโ€™ve been to many islands โ€“ Hawaii, Isle of Man, St Maarten, Curacao Puerto Rico, Guam. . . and theyโ€™re all struggling to handle the waste problem, because theyโ€™ve all taken the attitude of, โ€˜letโ€™s find a place to put it.โ€™โ€

The Guernsey-based Cahill Energy announced in March 2014 that it had signed an โ€œhistoricโ€ agreement with the Government of Barbados to build and operate โ€œa leading edgeโ€ US$240 million clean energy plant in n Vaucluse, St Thomas. The company said it would utilize โ€œthe most innovative technology availableโ€ to transform all kinds of waste on Barbados into clean, renewable energy.

Opposition Leader Mia Mottley has questioned Cahill Energyโ€™s ability to deliver, while warning that plasma gasification technology was โ€œlargely untested commerciallyโ€. She has also called on Prime Minister Freundel Stuart to release details of the agreement to the public.

McKenna said while he understood some of the concerns being raised about the multi-million dollar project, there was no reason to fear.

He pointed out that similar technology had been instituted in countries such as Japan, as well as across Europe.

โ€œThe technology which is going to be used in the project, called plasma gasification, this process has been demonstrated in Japan where it has been operational for over 10 years. Itโ€™s being introduced in Europe and there are two major plants of similar scale being built in England right now,โ€ the engineer explained.

โ€œItโ€™s very well researched and used in England in terms of the health effects to the local community, so we know itโ€™s quite safe,โ€ he said

  9. So the CEO of Cahill doesn’t know where her project is in design and construction
” construction starts in September ”
Incompetence or fraud that is the question ???
    Me thinks fraud.
She is trying to sell on the contract of that there is no doubt.

  10. PT

Give her a break she is only fronting for the boys, she don’t know her ass from her elbow when it come to infrastructure projects. Darcy and Glyne now doing her any favors ………..they are desperate to stay as far in the background as possible, remember they didn’t level with Chris and Denis that Cahill really belongs to them two vagabonds so they can’t come out of the woodwork.

  11. But Bjerkhamn and Tempro caught on to the ruse and opened their bigs mouths to Chris, Denis and Michael so now it WAR.

  12. Here is the big question:-
HOW MUCH MONEY HAS ALREADY BEEN PAID TO CAHILL OR ITS CONSULTANTS? With Darcy and Glyne project they don’t take the money themselves or in the name of the company, they let the GOB pay the money to their overseas consultants. That way no one can trace who the recipients of the money really are.
Hatch’s pronouncement today is really just the tracer for the real bullet, which will be a request for SSA and GOB to fund tens of millions of dollars for ‘consulting fees’.

  13. ………………and another SCAM surfaces in Barbados.

  14. The payments to the consultants will come from the new owner of the contract.
    She has paid no one
The sale of the contract is her ace in the hole
One of the 3 companies in letter will foot the bill if they are stupid enough to believe her bullshit.
The hatch generalisations on plasma health and safety and the EIS is just that .hatch are the replacement engineers for Otto Simon Ltd who left the project for non payment and the Cowan woman’s absuvive behaviour.
Hatch assisted Alter NRG on the teesvaley 1 project which is still not in operation
This woman has the uncanny knack of sucking people in and then disgarding them when it suits her needs.

  15. The major flaw with the Cahill design is its use of a SINGLE gasifer
When it doesn’t work there is no garbage being burned there is no electricity being generated
There is no standby generation in the design so BL&P will have to be on standby to pick up the short fall in power generation

  16. It’s strange that hatch who work for alterNRG as their PDP engineers
How can they represent the owner too
    Very strange
There is a conflict of interest or alter NRG are no longer the technology provider
Another key question is who holds the process guarantees if hatch are the owners engineer and do the PDP for NRG
    Who is over seeing who
    Fox in hen house syndrome
    It all stinks
And where is technip in this
They paid Cahill for the privilege of doing the front end package on this
Did they get their money back

  17. Dis Cowan women is a peace of shitte. Nobidy wants her on our is land. how can she build dis ting if its not even designed yet. 3 more years? Lord help us if she succeeds hopefully GOB will change before she can bring her poison to da island

  18. Been doing some research and it seems that Clare Cowan is the owner of Cahill Energy, but she is not an employee. She is a contractor (she does this to avoid paying taxes in Canada). There are no real employees in the company. They are all contractors and even then as they catch on to her scam they are dropping like flies.

Cahill Energy (a shell company) is strictly a conduit for her to suck cash out of whoever is stupid enough to pay for this and walk away from it with her pockets well lined.

This is a one woman show! A FREAK SHOW but a show none the less. Let’s put a stop to this evil woman now before it is too late!

  19. Just read the code of conduct for hatch
Prefaced by their CEO John Bianchini
I this is the code they adhere to or aspire to then they have a client in Clare Cowan who does not meet even their minimum requirements
I suggest John be made aware of the unethical exploits of this woman and that this could be his SNC
The code states that when working with a client whose code of ethics is at odd with hatch’s the strictest code applies
    Cahill code doesn’t exist
    So please Mr Bianchini
Apply your own morale compas and distance yourself from this fraudster

  20. Where are the investors
    She promised them weeks ago
She has 6 weeks to go before construction starts according to her lying mouth
    Where is she ??????

  21. If this woman is a consultant acting as the CEO is she authorised to bind the company ???
Be interesting to see if that’s the case
And if she wasn’t in fact authorised to bind the company are the contracts she signed as the ceo actually valid

  22. The more I look into the setup of this fraudulent scam
The more I see that this as an example of the supposed “great and the good” taking advantage of the ” unwashed masses” . the people really need to hear from their elected ministers who need to be transparent with us and fix the wron they have done to the people and to the future generations of bajans

  23. FRAUD

  24. Darcy is surely one rich lay preacher.

  25. This woman is all and more of your list Guy fox
But the sad fact is that the lemmings and rats that follow this pusillanimous pied piper Clare Cowan are just as culpable as she is
We need to contact the potential investors and relay to them the REAL nature of this deal. And the likely hood of their sucess given the fraudulent setup of this scam

  26. Has anyone thought of the implicstion s of an earthquake during the plasma gasification process
I have visions of Dante’s inferno
With plumes of toxic fumes billowin out into the already stricken area
The water used to quench the reaction gone into the ruptured coral base
The flare stack on the ground and the out of control reaction continuing to rage
The brick lining of both the reactor and the exit duct shaken loose by the quake the exothermic reaction will continue to burn and either escape out the top of the gasifier after burning through the unprotected steel duct or burn a hole in the side of the gasifer again where the fire brick have dislodged.

All or the above will have to be put on a HAZOP “what if” review which will i have no doubt will increase the current $700m build estimate
I hope Talor wessing and yearwood and all the other legal begals have enough PI coverage to pay for the claims coming their way.

  30. Residents say no to gasification plant in West Limerick

The Mayor of Limerick City and County Council has admitted they made a โ€œmistakeโ€ in granting a lease to a company planning to build a waste-to-energy plant at Gortadroma in West Limerick.

Cllr Liam Galvin made his comments at a public meeting in Shanagolden this Thursday evening which heard trenchant local opposition to the plan.

Hundreds of people turned up in Shanagolden hall for the meeting, many of them wearing red to show their opposition to the project.

They were given a presentation on gasification by Leonardo Riera and Dr Barry Wilson of Cadence EnviroPower (CEP), the company hoping to build the proposed facility, who insisted that gasification was not the same as incineration and that the technology they planned to use was safe.

Mr Riera described gasification as the โ€œcleanest and most efficient solution available today for the conversion of waste streams into energyโ€, while Dr Wilson pointed out that gasification was the โ€œpreferred optionโ€ for converting waste to energy.

Dr Wilson also pointed to the companyโ€™s track record in building and operating similar plants around the world. However, when pressed to produce specific data on the emissions for a plant identical to the one proposed for Gortadroma, he acknowledged that they did not have data on a plant โ€œexactly like thisโ€.

The meeting, which lasted over four hours, heard from many local residents who voiced outright opposition to the project.

Local GP Mary Woulfe told the meeting that the proposal was โ€œcompletely unacceptableโ€.

โ€œI find absolutely incredulous that someone can stand up there and try to defend a plant that is going to be burning thousands of tonnes of rubber every day and try to tell us that it will have no consequences,โ€ she said.

Local councillors also came in for severe criticism for agreeing to lease the site at Gortadroma to CEP. Cllr Cian Prendiville pointed out that the three Anti Austerity Alliance councillors were the only members of the council who had voted against the granting of the lease and he called for this decision to be reversed pending a full consultation and a second vote in six months time.

Cllr Galvin admitted that they made a โ€œmistakeโ€ in approving the lease and appealed to the company to agree to the lease being rescinded.

โ€œIt is quite clear that nobody here wants it,โ€ he dais

  31. Some seem to believe on;y Barbadians are against this technology.

  32. Membership Campaign: PLEASE COPY, PASTE AND SHARE: Good morning I write you on behalf of the page ” Bajans Against The $700M Waste To Energy Plant” for many of you may or not be aware of the Cahill Plasma Gasification Plant to reduce waste. However, the Future Centre Trust and the wider community opposes this short term solution for the undermentioned reasons.
    1) Recycling employs many more persons than this plant will.
    2) The Recycling industry will be killed in order to access the high calorific materials.
    3) Government Guarantee of a rate increase every 3 years despite MOU showing all electricity must be purchased from Cahill.
    4) No one currently monitors air quality in Barbados thus who will enforce, monitor and police in the future.
    5) Location, no one builds a factory on a hill that emits that burns.
    6) Residents west of Porters Factory suffer during Sugar Cane Crop Season of Whisky Fungus Emissions and other particulate emissions.
    7) Electricity will be sold to the government at as much as 45 cents per KWH.
    8) During gasification, tars, heavy metals, halogens and alkaline compounds are released within the product gas and can cause environmental and operational problems.
    9) Barbados is Signatory to the undermentioned Rio Declaration Principle 10 “Environmental issues are best handled with participation of all concerned citizens, at the relevant level. At the national level, each individual shall have appropriate access to information concerning the environment that is held by public authorities, including information on hazardous materials and activities”
in their communities, and the opportunity to participate in decision-making processes. States shall facilitate and encourage public awareness and participation by making information widely available. Effective access to judicial and administrative proceedings, including redress and remedy, shall be provided.
    10) No Commercially Operating Plasma Gasification Plant exist because of strict EPA requirements thus third world countries with poor environmental regulations and docile citizens are prime targets for these unproven technologies.
    11) Barbados Renewable Energy Asssociation can solve Barbados energy needs thru their touted 100% Renewable Hybrid System using Wind and Lithium Storage for far less. Why has the GOB Greenwashed the Cahill project when a 30 Acres Solar Hybrid system using wind and lithium battery storage can provide 100 of Barbados energy needs.
    12) This is not about eliminating waste as between 10 to 15 % of caustic waste with toxins such as mercury will still have to be landfilled. WHY WOULD CAHILL GASIFY KING GRASS AT $40 PER TON WHEN IT CAN GET NEARLY FROM $250 PER TON OR MORE FOR GASIFYING IMPORTED HAZARDOUS WASTE. Read between the lines for this is not about waste reduction but more about pulling on the financial nipples of bajans.
    13) Materials heated at high temperatures such as 5000C produces Nano Particulate Matter that the lungs cannot filter, the eyes cannot see them and currently no one test for them on an ongoing basis. Expects mysterious ailments in the absence of monitoring and environmental contamination of soil, sea and water from landfilled ash.
    14) No Environmental Justice; Over 300,000 litres Jet A1 Fuel spilled thanks to Shell Pegwell Boggs pipeline, it still exist while benzene seeps into water; why did Shell not turn off pipeline when leak was discovered, perhaps money had to be made, Mobil Gravesend underground contamination still remains uncleaned while our marine life slowly is poisoned. Runley Grriffith and residents in Checker Hall still after 30 years have to put up with Arawak pollution while the High Court tells them to learn to live with the plant for its a public good.
    15) The Cahill project lacks transparency for we were told in May 2015 it was to cost $600M then in July 2015 $700M despite the online documents speaks to US$240M.
    16) If Barbados finds significant Oil how will it impact on the 30 Year Power Purchase agreement with Cahill
    17) What will have to our reliable electrical supply when Cahill plant is offline 35 days yearly. Can we expect a less than perfect electrical supply.
    18) Who will do continuous monitoring for dioxins, furans and cadium in air around plant as well as the residual ash to be landfilled.
    19) What are the finders fees being paid and to whom as we need to ascertain if financial considerations overshadowed environmental concerns.
    20) In the absence of FOI and failure to embrace Rio Declaration Principle 10 the country needs to know who are the beneficial owners of Cahill.
Thus have we convinced you or do you care enough to join Bajans Against the $700M Waste To Energy Plant. Remember, governments don`t care until elections and the onus is on you to make a difference for your own sake and future generations. โ€ช#โ€Ž20000strongbarbados

  33. Studied Hatch`s website and did not come across one mention of experience in any Plasma Gasification plant projects, or WTE projects for that matter. So Cahill is using a consulting firm with 0 experience in that field, as their “experts” for the Barbados plant

I am not a supporter of the Cahill plant but it is slightly misleading to say no WTE plants have been completed since 1994. That’s presumably in the U.S. only and according to the report which is from 2011.
Other information says at least one has opened in the States since then. The majority seem to be in Europe, which makes sense against the comment in the report that they are not economical unless there is land scarcity.

  38. Here is a relevant link:

The Morcenx plant has suffered a series of delays and was due to be operating at full capacity by 11 March almost a year later than originally planned. However, on 9 March a fuel slagging problem happened in the gasifier stopping the plant. A new date for the full commissioning of the site has not yet been agreed.

“CEWEP is the umbrella association of the owners and operators of Waste-to-Energy Plants, representing some 394 Waste-to-Energy Plants from 18 European countries. They make up 86% of the Waste-to-Energy capacity in Europe.”
Doesn’t sound as though they are going to be particularly impartial about the pros and cons of WTE.

  41. To repeat for the illeterates:

The issue here is do Barbaians have the stomach to import garbage as a SID.

There there is the lack of transparency of this transaction.

Of course there is the concern being show by Bajans everywhere regardless of political affiliation. Especially for those LIVING on the rock.

  42. @ St george so what is your point ,i belive the point that is being made by my submissions is one that counteracts these outrageous annoying unproven theories told about WTE again with so many plants being built since 2001 the asinine information told by those who are in opposition is in dispute giving the many plants that have been built and are presently under construction

  43. @St.Georges Dragon

You are correct, the presentation is dated 2011 and therefore addresses the issue of WtE plants up to that time.

  44. It seems that some of the literates assume that they have a right to impose their way of thinking on what barbadians can or should stomach especially going by the past weeks events it seems that barbadians can stomach just about any and everything including the mountains of garbage which has been purposefully left to decorate the streets,
What barbadians for sure cannot stomach is carpet baggers like the DR who wants to tell them what to think.
