Well, if anybody was in any doubt that soccer is merely a political football, this soccer world cup should abuse such a mind.
A nation which has been jointly committing genocide has pride of place making sport at sports.

No doubt the World Cup has been granted to the USA in an effort to end the investigation into FIFA’s bribery history that resulted in inditement of Jack Warner and almost the entire FIFA administration. After all the USA has been THE biggest criminal establishment in all of history.

THE HOSTING of global sporting events like the FIFA World Cup and the Summer Olympics is, for most host countries, an opportunity to signal their status as global powers, and to stamp their names as countries of goodwill, open to values of interdependence and the recognition of the humanity of all.
However, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup partly hosted in the United States, the tournament represents more a final requiem of the US as a global leader, and a confirmation of American prioritisation of parochial jingoism over global brotherhood.
If anyone had bothered to consult the global south, we could have told them so.
The US has had great difficulty sustaining a consciousness of global partnership in the pursuit of mutually beneficial development. Its foreign policy views all events – climate change, COVID-19, Ebola, immigration, trade and investment – through the darkened lens of “national security”. These tendencies existed long before the Donald Trump presidency, which history determined, as one of its many practical jokes, would be hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Given this history, the US was always destined to show its ugly face at the World Cup. It simply does not care what the rest of the world thinks when it bans a Somalian referee (one of Africa’s best), or when it insists that the Iranian team must leave the US immediately after the final whistle.
If officials can be summarily banned, imagine the uncomfortable experience of ordinary soccer fans in an atmosphere of ICE (US Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and deportation.
The US is unlikely to subordinate its xenophobic instincts to the higher purpose of global happiness and brotherly love, even for a four-week tournament. The larger question therefore remains: what is to be done?
First, global sport governing bodies need to place the comfort of fans, players and officials, and the integrity of their sport, above any financial or political considerations when selecting tournament hosts. They should feel no hesitation in making visa accessibility considerations, and degree of cooperation from the host nation, as key criteria in determining host selection.
The governing body of West Indies cricket, Cricket West Indies (CWI), formerly the West Indies Cricket Board, should be directly interested in these questions. Why should CWI go outside the norm to host cricket matches in US cities, only to confront the denial of visas to players and officials, and dilute the quality and vibes of the tournament?
The optics of the 2026 World Cup have revealed that the rest of the world has moved beyond US global “leadership”. Unfortunately, the US has not noticed. Once the US gets over its superiority delusions and embraces values of mutual interdependence, then it will have become a genuine global leader.
Unfortunately, the political dynamics of FIFA 2026 beyond the boundary has offered little evidence of US transition to mature global leadership.
The global games must go on, with or without the US.
