Leonard St. Hill (former Town Planner believes too many epidemics in Africa seem to have the effect of weapons of mass destruction
Leonard St. Hill (former Town Planner believes too “many epidemics in Africa seem to have the effect of weapons of mass destruction”

There was a letter in the Daily Nation (30th. September 2014), entitled: Ebola a weapon of mass destruction? written by Mr. Leonard St.Hill. The gist of what he had to say is as follow: he avers that the absence of speculation (presumably its origins) over Ebola virus raises some suspicion. He goes on to state “that too many epidemics in Africa seem to have the effect of weapons of mass destruction which can result in genocide. He concludes that Africa is serving as a laboratory where the pharmaceutical (western) industry, use native Africans as test subjects to ascertain the efficacy of the pathogen and antidote, whilst making a financial killing.”

In the past , I have stated that persons should always stick to their areas of technical expertise and that the majority of Barbadians are scientific illiterates. St.Hill falls under both headings. He displays gross ignorance of microbiology and biotechnology and is guilty of disseminating false innuendoes to an uninitiated public.

The major pharmaceutical companies have little interest in doing research in little known tropical diseases. The returns on their investment are not worth it. The people of Africa are too poor and cannot afford the cost of a complete regimen of treatment. The return on investment is also one of the reasons; there have been few new antibiotics on the market. You are infected, you pop a few pills and the infection goes away. Then there is the regimen of vaccinations, which means that most life-threatening diseases are held at bay. The companies make their money from chronic diseases such as, certain forms of cancer, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. They want repeat clients, this where they make their money.

Africa has the greatest diversity of fauna in the world. One would also expect that the microbial world in Africa would also be diverse. When the Spanish first came to the Caribbean, they found flora which they had never seen before (cocoa, pineapple, avocado etc.). Similarly, in Africa, increases in population density have meant the encroachment by man of pristine jungle areas, resulting in exposure to new pathogens. Some of these pathogens over the years acquire the ability to cross the species barrier. In nature; micro-organisms are constantly exchanging DNA fragments between themselves. The exchange of DNA can be intra-species or inter-species; this process is called either transformation or transduction depending on whether bacteria or viruses are involved, This constant exchange of DNA can give rise to new strains which are either more pathogenic and virulent or less so than their progenitors. It is a documented fact that most new strains of the influenza virus originate in Asia, especially in China a country with the larges porcine population in the world. When animals and humans live cheek by jowl, human-animal inter-actions must occur. In other words, inter-action at the microbial level can and does occur. When this happens there is a new strain of the influenza virus. Are the pharmaceutical firms also causing genocide in Asia?

In Africa, there are myriads of known and unknown microbes. For example: Lassa fever, Marburg virus and Ebola, all of which are haemorrhagic viruses whose vector is the fruit bat. Then there are River blindness, Sleeping sickness and Nodding disease of the Sudan, where children constantly nod their heads and waste away.

There is no need for the pharmaceutical companies to covertly engage in genocide in Africa. The Africans are doing an excellent job of genocide on themselves. The question St. Hill should be addressing, is why are not the African countries doing their own research and solving their own problems, instead of depending on western countries? He should also be addressing the high illiteracy rate which, is resulting in Ebola running amok among the West African countries.

Finally, yesterday, the Journal Science published an article by Professor Pybus of Oxford University and Dr. Faria who used computational analysis and phylogenetic reconstruction (roughly means tracing family history) to traced back the origins of HIV-1 to the 1920’s in the Congo. One can do so by looking at the rates of mutation of some genetic markers. Whenever one mutates a micro-organism, one must check for the revertant rates (i.e. the number of mutants which change back to the original state), to ascertain the stability of the new

  2. If we here in Barbados are not careful and does not follow the other neighboring Caribbean countries in instituting some measure of restrictions on people and shipping traveling from the ebola afflicted countries,we may end up in a situation far worse than that of Raul Garcia. If people from these restricted countries are allowed unchecked into Barbados, even if they are found not affected after the stipulated quarantine period, we may have a problem when they attempt to leave Barbados by transiting one of the many increasing number of countries which are now imposing a ban on people and shipping from the affected region.

If indeed Ebola is airborne, as some scientists believe, then the so-called protective suits presented in comment by David would be ineffective. See following article.
    ………………………………………………………………………………………….
Soldiers from the US Army’s 101st Division, the Screaming Eagles, are on their way to the affected ebola regions in Africa. Some photos published a few days ago, show these men being kitted out with pressurised personal protective suits, which means that the 14.7 PSI plus within the suit ,will form an effective seal to keep the outside atmospheric pressure, and any contaminants from entering the suit. The military has had a long experience of this nature in the NBC field. If ebola becomes an air borne threat, these soldiers may still be able to enter heavily affected areas to observe and report, without the use of personal protective suits. This can be done from within an Armoured Personnel Carrier, or such, the interior of which can be pressurised up to 5 PSI, above atmospheric pressure.

after so many people got infected in africa and doctors and many in the health care field who worked among these people die,, can there be a 100 % certainty.

  7. What is Barbados doing to help there brother Africans , is it sending anybody to Liberia to work with whitey setting up hospitals, has it donated any money in aid Barbados is considering it, hoping it is over before they have to do anything , that’s right Barbados is poor too it needs aid from whitey for its national hotel trainee program etc Whats that motto on the Barbados coat of arms….Im okay pull up da rope

  8. Uninformed, and just plain ignorant can best describe most of the responses I have seen on this thread. And as usual there is that sociopathic tendency as well. It leads one to wonder if it is that lead lined plumbing, or those mercury laced elixirs, or the constant use of that ” good ole Blue Mountain ” bush , with its psychoactive THC constituent. Or is it just plain genetic, in which case God help us. The first three we can avoid. However we can’t wake one morning and decide we are going to alter the myelin encased nerve axons in our brains. Our consciousness is merely an electrochemical reaction inside a dying chemical reactor, the brain, but it appears in some cases , that some have expidited that process.

With the exception of a very few posts, these kinds of exchanges ,where the topic is highly complicated science, are completely worthless. And when you have persons who couldn’t get pass Biology 101, challenging a highly qualified scientist, on the science involved, then one has to wonder.

Einstein once said, ” a wise man speaks because he has something to say, a fool because he has to say something ”. How true.

In Plato’s famous allegory, reality is not directly perceived. We are tied down, in a cave, in front of a fire, unable to see ourselves or anyone else, only their shadows; and as we see the shadows dance and interact, we believe the shadows to be ourselves, and the walls of the cave to be the world. And we would find it difficult to see if brought into greater light.

While I believe it pointless to engage myself in this exercise, I would still say this. One of the reasons that Ebola is so deadly is because it interrupts and interferes with the immune system in multiple ways, causing massive disarray, which then makes it next to impossible for the now ‘ confused ‘ immune system to mount any meaningful response. So very basically

Proteins( Interferons) , which are released in host cells when pathogens are detected, are not being made or the process is interfered with by the VP35 protein. White blood cells are trapped in the circulatory system. Macrophages , a type of white blood cell, release proinflammatory cytokines that destroy the vascular endothilium. The body is then in a hugely paradoxical state, where one can die then of thrombosis, massive haemorrhage etc. This virus has the ability to turn internal organs into a thick soup, that quickly exits the body. So therefore , the elucidation of the viral replication cycle,as well as a complete understanding of the viral proteins is absolutely necessary if effective human treatments are to be found. Understanding the entry mechanism of the Ebola virus is vital if effective treatments are to be found, which will target the the infection before replication causes a disruption in cell function.

To those of you who find it convenient to blame the white man for just about everything , whether real or perceived, question, what if they all withdrew from Africa and offered no help either by way of medicines, equipment, supplies, or expertise, can those affected fix it themselves. This is something way beyond their ability . That is why we , who are in a position to help should do our best to save a helpless people. The world has the resources to do it, and it is in everyone’s interest to do so. And most importantly , get down on your knees and pray. God listens to our prayers.

  9. There are things the human mind cannot decipher or understand, anyhow God in his ultimate wisdom gave ALL a brain to SEEK and FIND ASK and in asking one could gain truth and knowledge, the reality is that no matter how foolish a comment or question appears “to be” , in that comment there is a glimmer of truth and a “HOPE” that all is praying for, PEACE BRO PHD.

  10. PHD The whites must take their fair share of the problems going on around the world, but it makes me ill to read nonsense like white men are trying to kill all Africans … everybody has a dog in this fight and should be stepping up to help.. instead of putting this crap forward.
What does Barbados help for Africa and ebola have in common….neither are airborne

  11. David | October 18, 2014 at 5:21 AM |

Let the record show that the official position is that Ebola is not airborne.

There have been scientific and recorded studies that show that Ebola CAN be transmitted without direct contact.

Only a fool would dismiss them and / or base decision of action on the ‘assumption’ that Ebola is not airborne.

For the scientists, FACT is (Merriam Webster) ”something that truly exists or happens : something that has actual existence”

Empirical evidence is ”capable of being verified or disproved by observation or experiment ”

Now, due to the short duration of THIS outbreak, can we or anyone really state CATEGORICALLY, that Ebola cannot be transmitted by air, as FACT?

I say no. Fact nor empirical evidence can be based on short duration status.

For those who say ‘but Ebola has been around for years’.
Sure, but not THIS version, as you know it mutates AND each version is different.

And further, empirical evidence in actual professional studies shows CLEARLY that Ebola CAN be transmitted without actual direct contact i.e. how else but by air.

So, ‘OFFICIAL’ positions are just that. ‘Positions’. But they are based on decisions nevertheless, decisions that may be right, or wrong.

I believe that the current ‘official position’ is wrong.

And to mention, for the suspicious, there must also be an element of ‘let us not panic the masses’, do you know what such panic will do?

  12. @Crusoe

Your last comment does not change the FACT that officially Ebola is classified by the establishment as not being able to be transmitted via air.

Another post from a very educated Scientist who thinks he or she knows everything that there is to know. You don’t! and none of us do. We all have a peephole that allows us to see just one or very few aspects of reality and your condescending attitude is really unhelpful. At first I thought you might be Dr Lucas but I know his style and capabilities. You have greater depth and bredth. Help us in clarifying the details of Ebola rather than speaking from on high with your superior knowledge and regurgitation of somewhat textbookish esoteric scientific jargon.

Ebola Scare Turns Dallas Hospital Into a ‘Ghost Town’

  17. @ PHD
We have carefully read your dissertation and wanted to make a few points.

First that anybody could recommend prayer to African peoples, to your White god of course, reminds us of another time where such an intervention left us landless and perpetually under-developed. We are talking about peoples who have been decimated by Western religion. This represents more of the same for the further destruction of the African mind.

Secondly, you seem to suppose that vaccines are known to work, we ask you to show us one single study of people who took any vaccine and another group that did not to prove your assertion that some kind of a Western ‘big pharma’ solution should be applied as a viable solution.

Thirdly, what have you to say about the involvement of your protected White man in the engineering of pathogens in the past or at least the experimentation with Black people, without our consent, to advance medicine for hundreds of years. You may recall the Tuskegee Experiments and of course there are many other studies showing that from the beginning of all the so-called ivy league universities in the USA experimentation on Africans was central.

Fourthly, you are very happy to cite Plato and Einstein et al. We are talking about medicine what about Imhotep, the real father of ALL the sciences, everybody else is only building on his work. Or Cheikh Anta Diop, who to our minds was a far superior intellect to your White (sic) hope Einstein. Or the other geniuses who gave your White people everything they now claim as theirs.

Fifthly, you seem to want to assign those of us who see White people as the serial genocidaires they have been as not sane. This kind of thinking can only be informed by a single-mindedness that is willing to air brush all the White man’s crimes and as the proverbial house nigger draw closer to thee. You should tell us if we are to wait for the White man’s god to come to deliver the rest of us from the crimes of his people. To us this is no more than complaining to Satan about the Devil.

Sixthly, you have still not made contact with the truism that over the last few decades a number of new diseases/viruses have emerged and with a certain regularity. We may be paranoid or even mad but we are not foolish. Is it not possible that these have been designed? On what basis could a body of work pointing in this direction be as callously disregarded as you seem insistent on doing?

Seventh, you seem to want to assert some kind of intellectual Darwinism. You talk about a highly trained scientist. We seem to recall that his are was in the food sciences. To you it did not matter that this same ‘trained scientist’ was not qualified in the are under consideration. That he was trying to limit the free speech rights of an elder statement who has wider experiences at a higher level than your so-called scientist. That the writer was not a virologist or closely related to the subject under consideration. Yes, you want to extend the protective ambit some have carved out for themselves and hold the rest of us hostage to your will, that day is dead!

Lastly, anybody who has to say they have a PhD or even give them self such a moniker is the intellectual equivalent of a small dickey man, shouting from a roof top, claims which are less than factual. We know PhDs who are cleaning toilets for a living. The regional university has a lot of PhDs who are largely useless. If you from your exalted perch have determined that the stench of the rabble down here on the blogs would disturb your nasal passages who are free to use your time writing a scholarly article in a scientific journal. But we would bet you have never done that for the half-baked ideas you espouse cannot withstand the scrutiny of your peers.

John Henry Clarke thought us that African people have never had any friends, and he is/was right. But you are telling us that we are to pray to your non-existent god, depend on your criminal medical institutions for salvation, presented us with those you think as superior intellects are recognition, suggested that unless we accept the dominant narrative we are less than sane. Your belligerence only serves to fortify our contention that the institutional racism, including medical racism, on which modern society is ill-founded can never be helpful to any real Black people or other people of colour anywhere. And that White have done and are determined to do what ever it takes to maintain a strangle hold on the 90% of the peoples of colour in this world, here!

  18. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The World Health Organization (WHO).
They’re the ones who are supposed to protect us — and the doctors and nurses on the front lines of the Ebola fight. But are they dropping the ball?
That’s the conclusion of a DAMNING new report on the WHO. In a nutshell, according to Bloomberg:
“Poor communication, a lack of leadership and underfunding plagued the World Health Organization’s initial response to the Ebola outbreak, allowing the disease to spiral out of control.
“The agency’s reaction was hobbled by a paucity of notes from experts in the field; $500,000 in support for the response that was delayed by bureaucratic hurdles; medics who weren’t deployed because they weren’t issued visas; and contact-tracers who refused to work on concern they wouldn’t get paid.”
The story goes on to note that the WHO didn’t sponsor a meeting of health ministers in the area, or put a regional coordination center into place, for three months after the initial outbreak in Guinea back in March. While cases rose to 500 in June, and continued climbing to almost 3,000, the WHO was still not as aggressive as outside experts wanted them to be. Now the tally is at 9,000 … and still climbing.

Some 85 percent of nurses say they haven’t been provided with the proper instruction on how to use protective clothing.
Here in the U.S., we’re learning that health-care workers with direct contact with the initial Dallas patient Thomas Eric Duncan or his infected tissue samples or fluids have been out flying on commercial airlines, taking vacations on cruise ships, and otherwise traveling far from home. Congress dragged Thomas Frieden, the CDC director, before a committee yesterday to explain the apparent missteps his organization and front-line health care workers have made to date.

Several members want him to ban travel from all the affected countries in West Africa. He won’t, saying people would cross borders anyway and fly here from neighboring African nations.

Meanwhile, his agency allowed nurse Amber Vinson to fly back and forth to Cleveland from Dallas — despite the fact she notified officials that she had a fever. The catch? It was 99.5 degrees, below the 100.4 threshold the CDC uses for Ebola identification. Nurses have also complained that they’re getting inadequate training on the use of protective gear and patient handling.

One University of Minnesota epidemiologist, Michael Osterholm, described the virus response to the Washington Post this way:
“Let’s acknowledge one thing: We’re making this up as we go.”
“I’ve been fairly optimistic that we will lick this thing.”
I’ve been fairly optimistic that we will lick this thing. But comments like that don’t exactly inspire confidence. The Obama Administration tried to gain some control of the news cycle by appointing an experienced political operator, Ron Klain, as an “Ebola Czar” today. But frankly, that seems like more of a glorified PR move rather than anything substantive.

We’ll have to see how things go over the weekend with possible new infections outside of Texas. We’ll have to see whether more Dallas health care workers come down with symptoms now that we’re nearing the 21-day window since Duncan showed up sick.

Plus, we’ll have to monitor how average Americans react when it comes to traveling, going out to eat and shop, etc. That will show whether the Ebola crisis is intensifying, or calming down — and that, in turn, will determine whether the markets continue to freak out or find their equilibrium.

I HAVE BEEN SAYING EBOLA should have been isolated in the smallest possible region asap. Then it is easier and cheaper to solve the problems—medical, organisational, economically! The argument about causing PANIC is ignorant since many people in Africa have proven that they will panic and behave irrationally anyway.

Which is better thousands of people travelling out or a few crazies evading the lockdown net?????

  19. not surprising ..the hospital is the object of suspicion and isolation from the public like they say a picture is worth a thousand words and the dallas story depicts cover up and distrust by the officers and officials of the gate

  20. @David
Let the record show that the official position is that Ebola is not airborne.
    ++++++++++++++++
I don’t know much but I subscribe to that view, if this virus was airborne the infection rate would be much higher and so far the only people outside of Africa who have fallen ill are those who had direct contact with Duncan. The mantra among those at the centre of the outbreak e.g. Sierra Leone is ABC i.e. “Avoid Body Contact” thus when they greet each other today they opt to touch their own chests rather than engage in perfunctory displays of handshakes and embraces.

In our part of the world (and I include the Caribbean) there is an epidemic of fear which is fuelled by the media, politicians and wild speculation on various social networks. Things are so topsy turvy that who would have thought that among the few coherent voices on this subject would be the voice of a Fox TV host.

We have carefully read your dissertation and wanted to make a few points.

The Tuskegee Experiments were obviously evilly wrong BUT there have been many experiments exposing white soldiers over the years too eg nuclear, drugs etc. I do agree that there has been far too much evil research.

Diop was a great mind but you yearn to place him above Einstein. Pray tell why Diop translated Einstein’s Theory of Relativity into Wolof instead of developing his OWN THEORY? Furthermore, it would seem a misappropriation of Genius time to translate TOR into an obscure language when you could be conducting far more productive research or thinking on some topic requiring significant solutions.

My recommendation would have been, “What Africa and Africans MUST do to progress quickly and throw off the shackles of Whitey” Now a properly thought out and implemented thesis of this nature would certainly have placed Diop near the top of History’s greatest Thinkers.

Well then, maybe, in a show of confidence in their knowledge, the following will be willing to sit near in the same room , normally clothed, not in direct contact, as a few critically ill patients with Ebola, for a day:
    – Head of CDC
    – Head of PAHO and WHO
    – Our own Head of Health Services
And the heads of the Health Services in ALL the OECD countries.

THEN, we shall truly know that they are confident in their knowledge.

And there should be no qualms about them doing so, if only to prove their confidence that what they are advising is correct.

There should be no objection to that request, after all, they say the virus is NOT airborne.

    Agreed?

  26. Pachamama, whatever you are, goddess or fairy.

I started my last post by mentioning sociopaths. I knew specifically who I was addressing. There is also something called the Dark Tetrad, Machiavellianism ,Narcissism,Sadism, and Psychopathy. You seem to have the unique ability to encompass all of these at once. I dear say that the notorious Josef Goebbels would have been proud of your abilities, or should I use an African/ American racist propogandist, since that might be more palatable for you. Or how about your Afro American friend Louis Farakkhan? You seem to have the same warped beliefs.

I made a very brief post on something I am qualified to speak on. I don’t offer opinions on astrophysics, or engineering, law or any other discipline, I am not qualified to do so, and certainly not in any arrogant , but uninformed way.

Again we try to blame everybody for the plight of the black race , and fail to admit any responsibility . I say , keep it up then and see where they are in another 10 years.

The Chinese , the Indians are good examples of ethnic groups who were desparately poor and backward. The Jews were almost exterminated in Europe during WW2, yet they don’t sit around cap in hand waiting for handouts. Look at them all today, economic and military powerhouses and moving on at breakneck speed, all through their own efforts.

You talk about ‘whitey’s’ atrocities, how about the likes of Idi Amin, Gen Sani Abacha ,Robert Mugabe, took a vibrant economy , breadbasket of Africa and turn it into the basket case of Africa. Omar al- bashir. Should we come a little closer home, Papa Doc and Baby doc. What’s with Haiti ? How about addressing those ills before , regurgitating your hate filled vitriol. The western folks are enjoying the benefits of their labour. I hardly think they are paying attention to your nonsense.

I am a born again Christian , who in no way , shape or form , associate with the Darwin person or his absurd theory. Jesus is my saviour. I have never seen him nor his father , so I can’t claim to know his colour. Anyhow
I would urge you to buy a ticket one way to the continent, your choice of country, and try to do something positive to help those who are suffering .

Those diseases while commonplace in Barbados before 1960 and unknown now. I did not happen by accident, the diseases went away because of vaccine.

And yet I can name the names of my classmates who died or were left disabled by these diseases.

Right here in this Barbados, in a village not too far from where you live now.

  40. And you don’t even have to go back to the 1960’s. In February 1980 I got chicken pox and was a sick as a dog. My children who have all been vaccinated against chicken pox, have never had the disease.

So yes even while Big Pharma is not God, big pharma is certainly not the devil either.

Big Pharma has saved millions and millions of lives, perhaps even the life of one called Pachamamma.

    AC; re your 8:12 pm post;

A good video showing the care that the removal team takes in doing their job in Liberia. I spotted what might be some lapses but they were probably not life threatening.

But check the video from around around 56 seconds after startup. The Interviewee, who seems to be the person in charge of the Undertaking team, says (and I think he repeats it):

“The moment the person dies the virus becomes active”

That might not be entirely accurate, or again it might be essentially true in most material aspects. Food for thought, eh?

If the virus becomes exponentially more virulent after it has essentially won the battle against the body’s defenses then a study of the stats related to individual patient care and exactly when caregivers became infected could pay enormous dividends in terms of reducing the extent and number of people who need to be contacted and isolated for each new case, inter alia, and could significantly reduce the cost of control of the virus and the hysteria around the disease.

  42. HOPE! WILL ! and the DETERMINATION to Survive! a story of a neglected people

  43. What does it mean to empower one self.. Self empowerment . the video /story tells much more than a people looking back but a people determined to fight against all odds pool .their resources together to make a life out of nothingness,an abandonment of selfishness, reconciled to a purpose of self will determination on the road to recovery through self empowerment, a story that says that YES WE CAN.

  44. A big irony, the company contracted to dispose the Ebola waste are better protected than the nurses.

The Texas hospital comes out with an apology to the public for mishandling the Ebola patience.
