Leonard St. Hill (former Town Planner believes too “many epidemics in Africa seem to have the effect of weapons of mass destruction”

There was a letter in the Daily Nation (30th. September 2014), entitled: Ebola a weapon of mass destruction? written by Mr. Leonard St.Hill. The gist of what he had to say is as follow: he avers that the absence of speculation (presumably its origins) over Ebola virus raises some suspicion. He goes on to state “that too many epidemics in Africa seem to have the effect of weapons of mass destruction which can result in genocide. He concludes that Africa is serving as a laboratory where the pharmaceutical (western) industry, use native Africans as test subjects to ascertain the efficacy of the pathogen and antidote, whilst making a financial killing.”

In the past , I have stated that persons should always stick to their areas of technical expertise and that the majority of Barbadians are scientific illiterates. St.Hill falls under both headings. He displays gross ignorance of microbiology and biotechnology and is guilty of disseminating false innuendoes to an uninitiated public.

The major pharmaceutical companies have little interest in doing research in little known tropical diseases. The returns on their investment are not worth it. The people of Africa are too poor and cannot afford the cost of a complete regimen of treatment. The return on investment is also one of the reasons; there have been few new antibiotics on the market. You are infected, you pop a few pills and the infection goes away. Then there is the regimen of vaccinations, which means that most life-threatening diseases are held at bay. The companies make their money from chronic diseases such as, certain forms of cancer, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. They want repeat clients, this where they make their money.

Africa has the greatest diversity of fauna in the world. One would also expect that the microbial world in Africa would also be diverse. When the Spanish first came to the Caribbean, they found flora which they had never seen before (cocoa, pineapple, avocado etc.). Similarly, in Africa, increases in population density have meant the encroachment by man of pristine jungle areas, resulting in exposure to new pathogens. Some of these pathogens over the years acquire the ability to cross the species barrier. In nature; micro-organisms are constantly exchanging DNA fragments between themselves. The exchange of DNA can be intra-species or inter-species; this process is called either transformation or transduction depending on whether bacteria or viruses are involved, This constant exchange of DNA can give rise to new strains which are either more pathogenic and virulent or less so than their progenitors. It is a documented fact that most new strains of the influenza virus originate in Asia, especially in China a country with the larges porcine population in the world. When animals and humans live cheek by jowl, human-animal inter-actions must occur. In other words, inter-action at the microbial level can and does occur. When this happens there is a new strain of the influenza virus. Are the pharmaceutical firms also causing genocide in Asia?

In Africa, there are myriads of known and unknown microbes. For example: Lassa fever, Marburg virus and Ebola, all of which are haemorrhagic viruses whose vector is the fruit bat. Then there are River blindness, Sleeping sickness and Nodding disease of the Sudan, where children constantly nod their heads and waste away.

There is no need for the pharmaceutical companies to covertly engage in genocide in Africa. The Africans are doing an excellent job of genocide on themselves. The question St. Hill should be addressing, is why are not the African countries doing their own research and solving their own problems, instead of depending on western countries? He should also be addressing the high illiteracy rate which, is resulting in Ebola running amok among the West African countries.

Finally, yesterday, the Journal Science published an article by Professor Pybus of Oxford University and Dr. Faria who used computational analysis and phylogenetic reconstruction (roughly means tracing family history) to traced back the origins of HIV-1 to the 1920’s in the Congo. One can do so by looking at the rates of mutation of some genetic markers. Whenever one mutates a micro-organism, one must check for the revertant rates (i.e. the number of mutants which change back to the original state), to ascertain the stability of the new

  3. Whether they like it or not resources have to be thrown at West African countries to arrest Ebola, and quickly.

  4. Mr. Leonard St. Hill, thinks that his education grants him the opportunity to advanced a hypothesis which is predicated upon vodoo science.

  5. still a relevant question remains as to whether birds can be carries of the Ebola virus and should searcher be concentrated in that area and prioritized given that birds migrate annually during the winter months to other countries,
below is an article which opens and answer the possibility

    BIRDS

There is limited data about the prevalence of Ebola in birds but a 2002 study from Purdue University found that the Ebola virus closely resembles the structure of several bird viruses. This means birds may be able to spread the virus to humans. Head researcher David Sanders said “while bird transmission of Ebola is by no means certain, the resemblance among all these viruses should encourage health officials to be on guard for it.”

  7. I know of many well educated Africans here in America that have never advanced such bullshite. As a mater of fact: a lot them often claim that the African has a tendency to blame the problems of Africa on European Economic colonialism.

Although a justifiable criticism of African countries a similar criticism can be levied at black-dominated countries in the Diaspora such as Barbados.

What are the educated black scientists in the Diaspora doing about the high incidence of non-communicable diseases in the Eastern Caribbean other than depending on the same Western pharmaceuticals companies to keep them as perennial drug addicts and chemical-dependent zombies?

What are you, Dr. Lucas, doing to help in improving the diet and quality of food available to black Barbadians or are you just another bullshit talker?

But you can always argue an African is an African whether at home or abroad. You can check with the white man, Indian or Oriental for confirmation of the African’s economic inferiority and religious subservience on a global scale.

  10. Now that the WHOLE world is threatened by Ebola a method to fund a vaccine will have to be sealed soon.

It is reported Doctors without borders is carrying the load so far as a first responder to the crisis.

I RESPECTFULLY SUGGEST THAT IF EBOLA INFECTS A LARGE NUMBER OF AMERICANS, BIG PHARMA WILL BE GIVEN USA GOVERNMENT MONEY TO “SOLVE” THE PROBLEM.

I AM SCIENTIFICALLY SEMI LITERATE SO I WILL NOT COMMENT ON WHAT I DO NOT KNOW. LOL

  13. We are dealing with two issues here.

    1. The inability of many African countries to manage a robust governance system. 2. The hosting region for Ebola a disease that currently threatens the world.

Yes it is a logical call to ask African countries to engage in relevant research to this Ebola problem but how practical is the call?

  15. David it is reasonable to suggest that the the rich countries should attack the Ebola problem with the intensity reserved for war.

  16. Georgie Porgie

The CDC just spelled out its protocol for treating anyone who visits a hospital in America with Ebola. The head of the CDC just said that,” If anyone comes into a hospital reporting a case Ebola, the CDC will dispatched a team of specially trained personell to take the potential patient to an isolated area.” And those healthcare professional who are exposed to this potential Ebola patient will be monitored. It’s that a plan of action Georgie Porgie?

  17. @Hants

President Obama issued a call to the world today that the response to Africa needs to be greater. Talk?

    VERY GOOD IDEA

  19. @Georgie Porgie
We pretend to be a christian too. In being so self-identified you spread a lot of unproven theories to a gullible public and have done more damage to mankind than all the diseases ever did. In fact every time we’re in Africa we are amazed how a people who have been for more than 2000 years invaded, genocided, robbed could be so committed to the ignorance you believe in as a central construct.

We unrepentantly support the proffer of Leonard St.Hill. Only the woofully ignorant would supposed that all of a sudden, within the last 50 years, all kinds of ‘new’ diseases, viruses have emerged, naturally. When for thousands of years we have had no evidence of this kind of evolution in either.

This is the kind of childish, christian, idiocy that most who hold those lies as truths can always be told about Africa and African peoples and a dirty christianity that makes ignorant people like you believe that you are closer to your stinking white god, to be. And we will bet you that none of these people who could easily balme Africa for everything would not see the concerted efforts by interest to blame Haiti for AIDS or Africa for Ebola, period! For them their special white people will never be involved in biological or virological warfare to achieve their economic, military ends. ……………….

  20. Based on what commentators are saying an Ebola vaccine is still years away.

  22. Come on guys let us discuss the threat of Ebola.

  23. @ GEORGIE PORGIE,

THERE IS A REASON I PUT THE WORD SOLVE IN QUOTATION MARKS.

  24. all the crticisms have /and are going to be leveled but the truth of the matter being that the wealthy international countries had no interest in helping the people of Africans , what most seem not to be aware of or just simply wishes to ignore in order to justify ones perspective and place blame aat a weak and vulnerable population is that in those areas mostly affected the people are poor and mostly uneducated and not trusting of govts, living and governed under tribal laws religious doctrine or even voodoo rituals , when one speak of Africa one must understand not only the geographical makeup but the physiological and psychological make up of many differing tribes living on the continent with their own way of self governing .the writer sets out to portray an africa in a style and manner similar to that of most western countries where all are subjected to democratic rules and same government , the article has failed in its effort to convince and has chosen to tightly weave and ignore some of the harsh realities which has exacerbate the problems of africa ,

  25. IF MAKING DRUGS TO COUNTERACT VIRUSES WAS EASY , BIG PHARMA WOULD BE MAKING A MINT WITH RESPECT TO THE FLU AND THE COMMON COLD

IF MAKING DRUGS TO COUNTERACT VIRUSES WAS EASY, NO ONE WOULD BE WORRYING ABOUT EBOLA BECAUSE THE STRUCTURE AND BEHAVIOR OF THE VIRUS IS KNOWN

  26. You know what is ironic. Accusations of ‘Big Pharma’ attacking us when Bajans are daily PUMPING Gramoxone, Roundup and worse, into our water supply via the groundweeds.

    Definition of madness.

  27. What is this writer, Lucas, talking about areas of specialty. That is bullshit. The truth is that there is no areas of specialty. This is just a kanard ignorant people like Lucas has been thought. But any person who is really educated will know that everything is connected to everything else. So this bullshit about areas of specialty is horse shit for dullards. We were students of Cheikh Anta Diop, a polymath, head of the radio carbon institute of Senegal, anthropologist, linguist. He always thought us that we could not just study anthropology and that there were several other areas we had to be as highly skilled in. This is the African way. When Africans were developing the sciences one had to study for over 40 years to master them. Africa, the continent which gave Europe everything it holds, invented the sciences. And now we have some stupid people with petty degrees in one area of science who could not tell anybody who the father of modern medicine or the sciences was, without a goggle search. But these credentialed ass holes could be now telling us what opinions we could have and not have based entirely on a singular credential. Who idiots!

  28. IF YOU HAVE A HISTORY OF PRACTICING GENOCIDE,
you are quite likely to be the first suspect.

WHEN YOU ARE KNOWN TO HAVE ARRIVED AT THE CONCLUSION
that the world’s population needs to be reduced, it just takes a little common sense and knowledge of history to know who you are talking about.

  29. Not wanting to languish in the JackAss Club I would comment as follows:
1 Lenny should know better than pontificate on such a subject. He should certainly not be strongly suggesting the racial or laboratory angle.

2 The poor Africans have been eating and living in close proximity to all manner of “street meat”/ wild animals

3 these disease are not new and can be on long on/off cycles. Additionally, for years historically, people were dying all over the globe and “medical professionals” did not have a clue what was happening. Does one think that Europeans knew what the Black Death was, how it was caused, the Spanish Flu etc??? Most detailed knowledge is way less than 50yrs, especially for viruses.

4 Millions die from “cold” and viruses every year in the Western / Developed Nations! Is that due to very clever group of Africans/ Asians wanting to kill people?

GP, why would Liberia or whichever country this Ebola outbreak started in , not locked down tight in quarantine? This is obviously NOT the first Ebola episode so surely once identified deal with it immediately. Naturally as it moves into a large city like Lagos, with 17mn peeps, they are playing with gasolene and matches. Interesting that over 660 yrs ago, when a ship arrived in Venice it was vetted as to which ports it had been to and a run through of all persons on board for illness. If required the ship was quarantined for 40 days! How stupid are we in 2014?

  30. RE He always thought us that we could not just study anthropology and that there were several other areas we had to be as highly skilled in. This is the African way. When Africans were developing the sciences one had to study for over 40 years to master them. Africa, the continent which gave Europe everything it holds, invented the sciences.

SO WITH ALL THIS EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE OF THE SCIENCES IT SEEMS THAT THE AFRICANS SHOULD BE DOING MUCH BETTER IN THEIR PUBLIC HEALTH ETC ah lie?

  31. MB
GP, why would Liberia or whichever country this Ebola outbreak started in , not locked down tight in quarantine?
THATS A GOOD QUESTION FOR PACHY AINT IT?
AFTER ALL IT WAS THE AFRICANS WHO INVENTED THE SCIENCES

SHOULDNT THEY KNOW THESE SIMPLE THINGS?

  32. while we squabble and fight ,, WHO breaking NEWS

Ebola cases could soar to 10,000 a week; CDC:

  33. @Pacha
It seems not so clever that highly educated Africans would GIVE to Europeans.

Today the Africans in leadership positions DONT GIVE anything, even scraps, to their own people! Check the Oil Delta in Nigeria!

When did that metamorphosis take place?

  34. How can Liberia be locked down Moneybrain?

    Map of Liberia

  35. @ac
WHY? Simple, the outbreak should have been QUARANTINED! NO ONE should have left infected areas except by properly appointed Air Ambulance bound for Prepared Hospitals.

The WHO should have known that Ebola must return and there should have been an Action Plan ready to go DAY 1! Bunch of highly paid, wine swilling BUREAUCRATS that talk but dont have SOLUTIONS! Yet another example of how leaders FAIL the populace and TAXPAYER!

GP, set me straight if I wrong!

  36. @David
    Close all borders!

Obviously, there is no ONE KEY to put in a lock and turn!
Surely a clever gent as yourself does not believe that potentially exposed people should take flights all over the globe?????????????????

Filling out a card like the chap Duncan in Dallas, stating you have not been near infection is a JOKE!

Lets say you have been exposed and are worried, what would most peeps do after having seen 2 people fly to the US and both live? Obviously I LIE get to the US and preserve my life!

What would you do to SAVE the most lives?

  37. MB
RE GP, set me straight if I wrong!
    YOU ARE 100 % CORRECT

  38. @Moneybrain

It was only known Duncan was exposed to a pregnant woman with Ebola AFTER he left Liberia.

Also, how does one know who has EBOLA if it takes 21 days to show symptoms?

  39. MB
What would you do to SAVE the most lives?
    LOSE SOME
A FEW MUST DIE TO SAVE MANY
PROGNOSIS IS 50 % WHO CATCH DISEASE WILL DIE

QUARANTINE AND LET THE CHIPS FALL WHERE THEY MAY BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT GOD
    YOU CANT SAVE LIIVES
ONLY THE ONE WHO GAVE LIFE CAN SAVE LIFE

  40. RE how does one know who has EBOLA if it takes 21 days to show symptoms?
YOU CANT TRULY KNOW BUT WITH A HEALTHY BIT OF SUSPICION AND GOOD HISTORY TAKING YOU WILL BE CORRECT MOST OF THE TIME

  41. @David
You provide EXCELLENT reasons for “locking down” OR QUARANTINE for at least 21 days!

    Please proffer a better solution.

Remember, the probability is highest that the spread and most deaths will be in Africa, especially in big cities like Lagos, therefore the solution assists Africans the most.

  42. Several countries in Africa are battling the problem, it is a continent. How will you lock down porous borders? You lock down these West African countries and their economies die. But what happens with the virus if you were able to accomplish the impossible? Does it go away?

  43. outside one real reason to locked down ,there are as many :real” convincing arguments not to locked down one being getting in and out of those areas affected is necessary for research, plus shutting out medical supplies and medical teams which in turn increases a high risk of the virus becoming more active,

  44. @ac

Obviously Med teams/ experts/ researchers could go in as they know what the score is BUT they would not be coming out on just any commercial flight without following “procedures”.

The bottomline is stopping spread in its tracks or would you ac be comfortable housing 1 or 2 of the 90 Nigerian students were they coming from an infected area to your home? Would Pacha or Raz? NOT a bloody chance! (forgive the pun)

  45. lock down simple but not so simple, there is also a moral code that is built into the equation,,which ALL must answer to and just turn to our backs or walk away from a population on the brink of an Apocalypse is not the answer further more history would not be so kind in judgement,,

  46. @David
My point is that the WHO should have an Action Plan and they could have stopped the spread early on in a small part of one country in Africa.
They are now projecting 5-10,000 infections a week. It is ridiculous incompetence!

Therefore, if you lock down early then AID could be given with relatively low total cost to the area effected BUT by permitting spread several African economies will be shattered.

  47. How does one lock down a sovereign country again?

  48. MB the CDC has said all along that once a lock down is implemented it cause panic and spreads unnecessary fear , resulting in less manpower and aid in helping to combat the disease,
