Leonard St. Hill (former Town Planner believes too “many epidemics in Africa seem to have the effect of weapons of mass destruction”

There was a letter in the Daily Nation (30th. September 2014), entitled: Ebola a weapon of mass destruction? written by Mr. Leonard St.Hill. The gist of what he had to say is as follow: he avers that the absence of speculation (presumably its origins) over Ebola virus raises some suspicion. He goes on to state “that too many epidemics in Africa seem to have the effect of weapons of mass destruction which can result in genocide. He concludes that Africa is serving as a laboratory where the pharmaceutical (western) industry, use native Africans as test subjects to ascertain the efficacy of the pathogen and antidote, whilst making a financial killing.”

In the past , I have stated that persons should always stick to their areas of technical expertise and that the majority of Barbadians are scientific illiterates. St.Hill falls under both headings. He displays gross ignorance of microbiology and biotechnology and is guilty of disseminating false innuendoes to an uninitiated public.

The major pharmaceutical companies have little interest in doing research in little known tropical diseases. The returns on their investment are not worth it. The people of Africa are too poor and cannot afford the cost of a complete regimen of treatment. The return on investment is also one of the reasons; there have been few new antibiotics on the market. You are infected, you pop a few pills and the infection goes away. Then there is the regimen of vaccinations, which means that most life-threatening diseases are held at bay. The companies make their money from chronic diseases such as, certain forms of cancer, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. They want repeat clients, this where they make their money.

Africa has the greatest diversity of fauna in the world. One would also expect that the microbial world in Africa would also be diverse. When the Spanish first came to the Caribbean, they found flora which they had never seen before (cocoa, pineapple, avocado etc.). Similarly, in Africa, increases in population density have meant the encroachment by man of pristine jungle areas, resulting in exposure to new pathogens. Some of these pathogens over the years acquire the ability to cross the species barrier. In nature; micro-organisms are constantly exchanging DNA fragments between themselves. The exchange of DNA can be intra-species or inter-species; this process is called either transformation or transduction depending on whether bacteria or viruses are involved, This constant exchange of DNA can give rise to new strains which are either more pathogenic and virulent or less so than their progenitors. It is a documented fact that most new strains of the influenza virus originate in Asia, especially in China a country with the larges porcine population in the world. When animals and humans live cheek by jowl, human-animal inter-actions must occur. In other words, inter-action at the microbial level can and does occur. When this happens there is a new strain of the influenza virus. Are the pharmaceutical firms also causing genocide in Asia?

In Africa, there are myriads of known and unknown microbes. For example: Lassa fever, Marburg virus and Ebola, all of which are haemorrhagic viruses whose vector is the fruit bat. Then there are River blindness, Sleeping sickness and Nodding disease of the Sudan, where children constantly nod their heads and waste away.

There is no need for the pharmaceutical companies to covertly engage in genocide in Africa. The Africans are doing an excellent job of genocide on themselves. The question St. Hill should be addressing, is why are not the African countries doing their own research and solving their own problems, instead of depending on western countries? He should also be addressing the high illiteracy rate which, is resulting in Ebola running amok among the West African countries.

Finally, yesterday, the Journal Science published an article by Professor Pybus of Oxford University and Dr. Faria who used computational analysis and phylogenetic reconstruction (roughly means tracing family history) to traced back the origins of HIV-1 to the 1920’s in the Congo. One can do so by looking at the rates of mutation of some genetic markers. Whenever one mutates a micro-organism, one must check for the revertant rates (i.e. the number of mutants which change back to the original state), to ascertain the stability of the new

So, they moved the SECOND infected hospital worker via jet to the CDC...

Funny.. .look at one of the guys moving her..

ZERO protective gear.

This should be illegal... moving Ebola patients without wearing any protection.

No one is "immune" to Ebola.

Either Ebola is real, and its a threat... or its fake, and the protections are a farce.

  3. @BAFBFP,

If Ebola ‘get way’ and it might have already, don’t worry, countries will be begging for survivors to come and live, due to depleted populations and need to fulfill job roles.

It should be obvious to all but the most blinkered, that Ebola is on the verge of severely restricting the world travel, business and economic flow.

The first sign of existence in a cosmopolitan city (NY, Hong Kong, London) and shut down will start. Nobody will travel to that city and the residents there will restrict their own movements.

And likely the powers that be are real scared about that too.

  4. @ David,

All that shows is that the CDC is underestimating the virus, a terrible mistake.

I guess the suit guy is a paper pusher and wont ‘hands on’, but the CDC cannot DEMONSTRATE clearly how the virus is spreading. Can it?

The point of this is, IF a case gets on Board a plane or train, will other passengers be wearing HAZMAT suits?

THAT is how fast it can spread and the implications are dire.

  5. in refernce to the guy not wearing protective suits ..his job is one of navigator meaning the “eyes “of the health workers undertaking the job of moving the patient to destinated places the hazmat suits are cumbersome and does not give the health workers enough freedom to undertake every tasks relating to ..movement ..sight .and sound under those circumstances.

  7. Is Barbados ready to deal with an ebola infected person?

Are the paramedics, nurses and doctors being trained to use the “protective suits” etc?

Given the density of the population of Barbados is it wise to have a treatment location in Bridgetown?

  8. @Hants

The reason given by Joy St.John, the chief medical officer is that the proximity to the QEH is necessary to access services supplied by the QEH. The permanent secretary Tennyson Springer assured concerned parents at a town hall last night the children are in danger only if the breech the perimeter of the Isolation Centre.

  9. are-we-there-yet Avatar

When one or more of the Duncan contacts who are now in isolation quarantine show clear signs of ebola infection then the current Ebola paradigm will prevail. If all of them, or all except Ms. Troh, remain free of infection the clear message that will be eventually recognized is that Ebola is overhyped and can be controlled. It would therefore be a predominantly caregiver and undertaker disease and, with proper precautions put in place, can be licked through careful exclusion and epidemiological practices, aligned with quickly ramped up production of vaccines and plasma from recovered patients.

At present the current paradigm must be followed as it would be essential to take all precautions. But if the Duncan contacts remain free there will have to be an absolute revamping of the measures being used to limit spread and it will become obvious that the disease does not merit the hysteria it is now generating.

The reason is that it appears at present that the disease is actually very difficult to spread through infection of people who interact with infected persons showing no symptoms or are even at a relatively early stage of showing symptoms. The main stage or period of infectivity seems to be when the person is near death or has died, therefore only those persons who have to touch or otherwise interact with very sick, dying or dead patients are likely to be themselves infected unless there are lapses in their applying the protocols for their protection especially re. the careful use of PPE’s.

    To be continued….

  14. “Ebola overhyped” with thousands already dead and WHO projected estimates to be in thousands weekly such a comment grossly overlook all the contributing factors that are influential in the rapid and highly contagious spread of the virus.

  15. Woman on a cruise from America to the Caribbean, informed authoritIes that she was exposed to the Ebola virus. This woman believe it or not, is now in isolation in Belize and has been for the last 17 days. Who knows how many islands she has visited before she made the claim? And put the gravey on de rice: the Obama Administration is contemplating whether or not to allow this woman reentry into the United States.

  16. Imagine. Barack Obama has a secretary of human services who has no knowledge about health care. She has been in hiding throughout this ‘crisis’. Now, he has appointed, or will appoint, an Ebola Czar who is a lawyer and political apparatchik. Maybe too much shite is in his bloodstream. He must qualify as the most inept president of anything, anywhere at anytime.

  19. @ David, October 17, 2014 at 6:54 AM,
You have brought dishonour to this publication with your photo depiction of a dying and prostate African child clearly in a state of distress. The state of the hospital portrays the desperate reality faced by those patients and medical professionals whose paths have been brought together through mischance.

This raw imagery is common place in “gutter” European journals and reinforces commonly held believes that “blacks” are an inferior breed. What purpose does it serve to show such a raw and unnecessary image in a publication which is generally respected by the many?

You should be aiming your canon at your government. Ebola must not be allowed to enter Barbados.

  20. Is it true that there is a West African Cargo ship off Barbados waters, with two sick crewmen aboard.

Story goes that they were refused entry yesterday evening, Coast Guard met the boat and refused entry.

Now, I would be watching to make sure they don’t drop the two sick men in a dinghy and take off with the ship.

ac; re your 12:46 pm post.

    Read this one from today;

    http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/ebola-virus-outbreak/ebola-fear-factor-why-america-needs-viral-reality-check-n228331

You will see it uses the same arguments I did in declaring a few days ago that ebola is overhyped.

If the Duncan group that is currently in quarantine over the 21 required days, does not contract Ebola, imho, most reasonable people will come to realise that the disease is actually fairly difficult to catch as the authorities have been saying from the start and that the current hype is actually unhelpful and counterproductive since spread appears to be low or unlikely from sick humans who are even at a stage of the disease where they are producing effluent fluids with viral particles but where the body is not near death and it’s defence system is still fighting the foreign virus.

I am willing to bet that, based on current progress and if all or all but one of the currently isolated Duncan group survive without being infected by Ebola, that there will be no further spread of the disease directly traceable to Duncan outside of a slim possibility of a few more unfortunate Duncan caregivers that would have been infected at a time near to his death in the Dallas hospital.

There is also a possibility of infection by virus particles carried in aerosols through projectile sneezing, vomiting etc. but it seems likely that such a possibility might also be restricted to an infectious stage that is around the time when the sufferer is near to death.

If I am right Barbados can effectively manage to stop an incursion of Ebola, even in our current low resource state. We do not have to repeat America’s mistakes.

  25. china ‘s lackluster response to giving aid to africa has not gone unnoticed

China’s international reputation for humanitarian aid is among the worst of the globe’s superpowers. As Quartz reports, the new shipment of millions of dollars in medical supplies and workers could be the beginnings of an attempt to reshape that reputation. Only 0.4% of China’s foreign aid goes directly to humanitarian causes, rather that infrastructure projects or business efforts that could serve to improve nations’ trade with China as much as it could help the nations themselves. In Africa, particularly, China’s actions have appeared self-rewarding rather than altruistic.

  26. Africa’s Ebola Should Be China’s Problem

China may be Africa’s biggest trading partner and one of its biggest investors, but you wouldn’t know that from the size of its contribution toward fighting West Africa’s Ebola outbreak
In fact, the contrast between its assistance and that of the U.S. is instructive: Today, President Barack Obama announced that the U.S. would raise the total of U.S. personnel now in Africa dealing with Ebola to 3,000; the U.S. has committed more than $175 million in aid. With much fanfare, China has said it will increase the number of its medical personnel in Sierra Leone to 174 and raise its total amount of assistance to roughly $37 million.
I know, I know: Relative to the U.S., China remains a poor country, and its growing willingness to extend humanitarian assistance outside its borders is a good thing. But consider this: China has close to 20,000 citizens working and living in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Setting aside U.S. money flowing into Liberia’s lucrative shipping registry, China’s investment in those three countries dwarfs that of the U.S. (In fact, China’s trading relationship with Africa overall is twice that of the U.S.) It recently signed deals for iron ore mining in the region that collectively run into the billions of dollars.

  27. @are-we-there-yet
Your reading of this situation has been generally right, from day one.

  28. There was an interview this evening on CNN between Wolf Blitzer and the Deputy spokeswoman at the US State Department. Her rebuke of the Belize government for not allowing a cruise ship to berth in order to allow the sick person to disembark and the unwillingness to extend a similar rebuke to Mexico who refused also is instructive.

  29. @ac and Easy
ac I trust Easy is reading this info about China’s AID to West Africa. I have tried to explain to him that Chinese are very likely to be more racist than Whites in interacting with Africans. Exploiting resources is one thing. Chinese blogs have been very full of racism, especially against the Chinese men who take African wives, while in Africa, because there are 30% more Chinese men than women.

People born in the Far East/ China have little or no history with Black peeps so there is virtually no basis for understanding. In reality and perceptually there is a little in common.

    @Georgie Porgie
We pretend to be a christian too. In being so self-identified you spread a lot of unproven theories to a gullible public and have done more damage to mankind than all the diseases ever did. In fact every time we’re in Africa we are amazed how a people who have been for more than 2000 years invaded, genocided, robbed could be so committed to the ignorance you believe in as a central construct.

We unrepentantly support the proffer of Leonard St.Hill. Only the woofully ignorant would supposed that all of a sudden, within the last 50 years, all kinds of ‘new’ diseases, viruses have emerged, naturally. When for thousands of years we have had no evidence of this kind of evolution in either.

This is the kind of childish, christian, idiocy that most who hold those lies as truths can always be told about Africa and African peoples and a dirty christianity that makes ignorant people like you believe that you are closer to your stinking white god, to be. And we will bet you that none of these people who could easily balme Africa for everything would not see the concerted efforts by interest to blame Haiti for AIDS or Africa for Ebola, period! For them their special white people will never be involved in biological or virological warfare to achieve their economic, military ends. ……………….

  33. @ BAF re your 4:19 comment.

We thought your comment was pregnant with meaning. We are sorry about the delay but we wanted some time to think more deeply about the gravamen of your insightful contribution.

Our considered opinion is yes. There has been no qualitative change in the genocidal intent of White people in America or elsewhere. More deeply, we consider that Whites everywhere are still generally insistent on benefiting from racism as a social organizing principle. And the genocides of the past keep informing current realities everywhere in the American empire.

Under Obama things keep getting worst, by the minute and by every measure, metric. Still, when he leaves office you should expect Blacks to pay a price for having a useless Black man in their White House. Of course, this reading is well informed by history – The Reconstruction Period, for example, and what happened to end it, what irony!

Now that some of the White apologists, above, have had their chance to talk the usual ignorance, we trust that our response has been useful to you, BAF.

I know that the blog ought to focus on the Ebola crisis but I have to address two points of Moneybrain’s that falls short of the truth. (1) Most if not all of the violence in the inner-cities of America are drug related. Now with that being said: they’re deeper socioeconomic issues associated with the senseless killings in the inner-cities of America. (2) The genocidal mass slaughter by the HuTu majority of the Tutsi minority, was predicated upon historical hatred inspired by Belgian colonialist, who favor the Tutsi minority over the Hutu morjarity. It was an ingenuous divide and rule tactic employed by the Belgian colonialist, in an effort to control the Rwandan Black masses.
