More private sector groups add raised voices to imposition of Muni Tax

Dear Mr Minister,

Did you really sit down and think out how this Municipal  Solid Waste Tax was going to affect the citizens and residents of this country? Did you really? First you came up with a figure of 0.7% and was adamant it was 0.7% even when Donville stated that that figured doesn’t sound right and should be reviewed.

We heard by the wayside that it was reduced to 0.3%. YOU NEVER came to us to tell us publicly  that it had been reviewed. Then you came on Brasstacks Sunday to talk and answer questions from the public about this tax. You with you arrogant attitude telling people that even if they cannot afford to pay they must pay it and then apply for a rebate or refund and it will be up to YOU to approve it. You further went on to state that you said MAY and not WILL approve refunds. What the France you take us for???

How do you expect someone who has a pension  to find that money when they can’t even find money to pay for their utilities and food. How do you expect  people who have struggled to get a house, paying a mortgage, sending their children to school/university, facing lay offs or have been, trying to find  money to pay for utilities and food find this extra money? How the hell do you expect the Hotels and businesses struggling with low occupancy, fewer customers to find this money to pay this tax?

We have you and your government threatening people to pay by the end of the month or face penalties.  Some haven’t seen their bills as yet or have just received them. What kind of Brass Bowls are you all? You all are trying to implement strong arm tactics on the population who are land owners, threatening not to supply Land Tax certificates if this tax is not paid. What type of Tax is this  again? For solid waste? Then what does it have to do with the Land Tax?? Yet it is based on the site value of land  we own?

You with your arrogant attitude are telling us that the tax will NOT be reviewed. Donville has asked that the tax be reviewed after hearing from businesses and people that the tax was not properly thought out and unfair.  Yet you adamantly stated that the tax will NOT be reviewed. What kind of human being are you? Will you help buy uniforms and school supplies for the children whose parents won’t have any EXTRA money after paying this tax? Will you help buy food and pay utilities for the pensioners who don’t have this EXTRA money put aside?  Will you help the farmers by paying this tax for them enabling them to grow food to feed your government and the people of this island? Mr Minister,  you really haven’t given any thought on the effect of this tax and it is evident that you and your colleagues have lost the ability to think and listen!

I am sorry Mr Minister I cannot see the Emperor’s new clothes.

The gap between rich and poor has widened every day during the last decade. He argues that Barbadians must halt this slide now by electing a new and more caring DLP government.

    Chris Sinckler wants to see Barbados move to a new stage of economic and social development. He has a vision of a Barbados in which economic policy is used not just to further enrich the wealthy, but to liberate people from the indignity of poverty and social exclusion; where social services such as education, health care and housing are rights guaranteed to all Barbadians and not privileges reserved for the few. This will require the full participation of all Barbadians in policy development and implementation; and will mean the building of stronger, safer and more active communities which are fully involved in the management of this country.

    Christopher Peter Sinckler holds a Masters Degree in International Trade Policy (UWI), and is a 1990 honours graduate of the University of the West Indies in Political Science. A Specialist in International Trade he is currently Executive Director of Caribbean Policy Development Centre, the largest and most successful regional policy research and advocacy NGO in the Caribbean. In his near 20 years as a policy analyst he has worked extensively with regional and international organisations, such as the World Bank, IMF, WTO, United Nations and CARICOM petitioning to protect the livelihoods of disadvantaged groups. He is a lecturer in “Small Economies & Contemporary Trade Policy Issues” for the Masters in International Trade Policy Programme at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies. Chris Sinckler is the current General Secretary of the Democratic Labour Party.

    Chris is married to Arlyn Mayers and they have three children – Tatyana, Che and Niccolo.

    The below excerpt was taken from page 6 of the Municipal Solid Waste Tax Bill, 2014:

    “Penalty for failure to pay tax:”
    “6 (1) Where a person fails to pay the tax due or payable under this Act, that person shall in addition to the tax, pay to the Commissioner, a penalty equal to 5 per cent of the amount which was not paid.
    (2) An interest rate of one per cent per month shall be payable on any unpaid tax or penalty imposed under subsection (1).”

    Is it out of fear of the enforcement of this penalty that has caused many Barbadians to gather in droves at the Barbados Revenue Authority to pay the solid waste tax?

    Or were they just, as usual, spewing “hot air” when they complained about and threatened not to pay the tax?

    It is important to note that you never focus on DLP policies that uplift the society……. (well, they aren’t many).

    Qualifications don’t change indifference or improve professional conduct if the constitution of the individual is prone to weakness and influence. Thieving and not looking after business of Barbados in a proper way has put us in this precarious situation. Shitety policies and other onerous endeavors of a personal interests are the reasons for the bottom dropping out the bucket. And last but certainly not least, passive, frighten, and compromise bajans is the reason why the blunder and exploitation has been allowed to continue. The judiciary is the way it is because it has been allowed to continue. Politicians doing shite and getting way with shite, they are they big up friends, have been allowed to continue. Why you think things so stink in the judiciary, and other key segments of Barbados procedural systems.

    Take a look at the way our politicians behave and tell me if their exude confidence that could instill confidence. They all behave like dictators. This administration is now infamous for callous cold, hearted, misrepresentation of facts speeches No speeches that sympathizes with the pain bajans are feeling or no speeches transparent enough to tell bajans the real truths as to why they will have to commit and sacrifice. They blame BLP; BLP blame DLP and all two pompersetting like they are the morning and evening sun. Stuuuuuuuuuupse.

    It is the right of any individual to own property. Its called a societal norm and it has been practice from the times of the Cavemen. There is no logical explanation for deriving this tax on the basis of one thing but its description tells the story of another thing. To me that constitutes deception and its implementation is nothing short of authoritarian. If that callous cunt for an MOF would come clean with the people and inform the people of the true state of the economy and the need for austerity measures and pelt tightening I think bajans would lend a more sympathetic ear. But this lot is too emotionally involved with politics to see pass their bigotry and pompousness. I know they read the blogs and know what people are saying. I wish I had some proofs to nail their asses to an up-sided down cross.

    Garbage is a huge problem. Here in Toronto we sent our garbage to Michigan, USA.

    Fortunately Ontario is huge province so the garbage is sent 200km away to London,Ontario.
