Hooliganism, Bullying, Intimidation, Moral Decay

All of the above, in my opinion aptly describe an experience I had recently. I remember in my youth and even to this day hearing persons muse about the fact that Barbadians are a docile people. One of the favourite things we like to say in times of despair is “if Bajans were like Jamaicans, the things that happen here, would not happen”. I assume that by quoting this statement, we are implying that we are a more tolerant society. Ask persons who have been victims of intolerance, if this is so and I guarantee they would not agree.

The moral decay that is endemic in our society, is not a new phenomenon. There have been incidents of violence, hooliganism, bullying, and intimidation for decades. What we are brilliant at, is sweeping it under the carpet or applying a band-aid on an open sore and hoping it would heal.

One of my favourite quotes is “All it takes for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing”. I live by this principle and one other, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. These are lessons learnt as a young impressionable child and they have stuck with me for 35years.

I own and operate a Boutique in Speightstown, St. Peter. On the morning of December 16th, 2013, while assisting a client, a ‘Lady’ entered the store and asked, “Is this Josephine’s Boutique?” I replied in the affirmative and she informed me that she had a delivery for me. I finalized the transaction with my client, all the while oblivious the other activity going on in the store.

I finally had a chance to speak to the ’Lady’, who was waiting on me in the store, this time accompanied by another ‘gentleman’, so I approached them to find out about said delivery. I was greeted by a HUGE box of garbage, with Josephine’s Boutique written on the outside. I immediately recognized the box, since I had put it in the garbage disposal area at the mall where I work the previous week and it had been collected on Thursday of same week. After my initial shock, I asked both of them, why did they bring a box of garbage and put it in my store. The ‘Lady’ responded in a sneering tone, “it was on my property so I brought it back”. They wanted no explanation or had any more time to converse with me. Their mission was completed and they huffed and puffed, got in their vehicles and drove off.

Again, their behaviour can only be described in the terms I listed at the beginning of this letter. Common sense, rational thought, decency, professionalism, respect, morals, principles all went south for the winter in this situation. Garbage is collected from one location, it obviously falls of the truck at another location and instead of reacting rationally, this ‘Lady’ and two ‘thugs’, drive to my store in Speightstown and dump the HUGE box of filthy garbage, in my store because the box says ‘Josephine’s Boutique’ on the outside. Bear in mind, everyone else in the mall has thrown garbage in the box since it was the biggest one in the disposal area.

This is an open sore, and no amount of band-aids will heal it. Who does such things, unless they feel that they can get away with it because we Bajans are ‘docile’ and we like to sweep things under the carpet? No more!!!! It takes a tiny pebble to start a big ripple in the ocean. I am that pebble.

  1. @Observing

Always refreshing (and uplifting) to read your comments. When you get some time explain to Ross what was meant about hits in social media which has nothing to do with activity/comments on BU, simply not inclined to deal with the pedantic among us during this festive season.

  2. LOL David……..it ended yesterday morning. I just about got my 24 hours.

  3. This is the prob with Barbados, too many people like you and AC – who from your posts thus far have led me to believe you are both self- centred, arrogant donkeys! Lisa had every right to bring this issue to the fore and i am backing her 100%. For the two of you (lawson and ac) to accuse and degrade her effort at every turn, speak volumes of your characters and I hope the two of you never have any issues with which you want the BU family to sympathize.
Nothing is stopping the other ‘side’ from sharing their story on BU.
Aadonijah was correct in his song -Two ‘Barbadoses’.

  4. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, to compare this to Gandhi or MLK is laughable and an insult to them . If you think every action or reaction is based on race is the problem here. Even if that business was owned by a white woman or man for that matter the garbage was being returned ergo the back up

  5. Lawson or is it Well Well

You are a real disappointment on this matter. We all have our MLKs and Gandhis right here in Barbados. The problem is that we lionize people on the global stage at the expense of our own, Positions taken on the local front by Lisas et al and others who refuse to cower before the establishment are equally as impactful and required.

  6. Lovely couple.

  7. I actually heard of this incident probably 10 or so mins after it happened and was in total shock that such a thing could’ve happened. Mind you….I knew neither of the parties involved. However, having engaged the proprietress of Josephine’s Boutique ( might’ve gotten the name wrong) in dialogue it was clear that a criminal act was perpetrated upon her. Her anger and frustration was clear for the world to see and her response to the act (in my opinion) was swift and well thought out. Having advanced knowledge of what she was going to do and also having inputted my two cents worth, I’m surprised at the inaction to date as per certain parties. As to those here who may think that this is just the cry of someone seeking attention. Ask yourself this question…. What if it was you. What would you have done in such a situation thugs or no thugs.

  8. There is evidence that COW’s second pig illegally dump garbage; and it is being ignored by Lawson and Ross. There is no evidence to suggest that Lisa dump anything illegally. How do we know for certain that the box of garbage that COW’s second pig deposited in Lisa’s store was actually retrieved from her property? Why would anyone believe this to be the case and ignore what is clearly provable?

  10. LOL @ all o wunna…
…mean wunna ain’t work out yet that there is only a small difference between Ross, Lawson, Moneybrain and Mrs. COW…?
The problems they face on BU is that their usual tactics are not workable (threats, bribery, intimidation…) so they resort to other tactics….
Ross is the legalistic mountain builder
    Lawson the cynical insulter
Moneybrain the ‘rich and famous’ success story of whom we should be in awe…

…and they probably do manage to intimidate some here on BU too,…but not most…
LOL Bushie just read a post where Ross was associating with Lawson and ac – LOL LOLL oh shiite Ha Ha ..that means that he has reached a nadir – even for him…. How pathetic….seeking to frustrate the ADMIRABLE and Honourable actions of a REAL woman who refuses to be intimidated by the likes of these three….

They are just shocked to see how a black woman could have the gall to stand up to one of them so boldly….next thing wunna know the damn politicians may grow some balls and start acting like MEN too…those fellows scared as shiite yuh!!
..one wonders at Amused’s position WRT Ross now…? 🙂

  11. the possibilty that mary anne cameras was also rolling when the garbage was put on her premises is real. hence her reaction. the plot thickens.

  12. ha ha Ignore the evidence at hand to delve into possibilities; why AC? Cow’s second pig promise you something? LOL!

  13. Lisa
Doan leh nuhbody steal yuh joy.You doing the right thing.Nice! As you see BU got some tunnel visioned bloggers.Doan ‘min dem needer.

  14. Gabriel, you say that Lisa is doing the right thing. But what is she doing? Is she going to sue the mistaken depositor of garbage on her premises? Hope for the police to lay charges? Become the most popular current thread on BU? Bad manners and gaucherie are not criminal offenses, Lisa.

  15. No Jeff, what she is doing you wont see it in the law books. She is going to dent the pride and reputation of one of our so-called social elite. She is representing for others to get up of their docile asses and do the same i.e. grasp the importance of advocacy in a democracy.

  16. Bush Tea shoudnt you be at a park exposing yourself to kids or something. You can back her all you want she still not gonna want you. So don’t get your willy all excited for nothing. The thing that we have in common is that mrs Cow didn’t want the garbage on her property and the rest of us don’t want to eat it .If you believe that she sat in her store for 15 minutes choking and not telling the guys to shut the engine off defies logic. Who are the mall owners, who are the garbage people her rent is used to pay ..quit making it a race issue. and whats with cylindrical insulter …I have been trying to lose weight

  17. The possiblities are real… look who LISA place blamed on for depositing the garbage. the possibilty that they can sue her for stating such witthout proof is reAl….

  18. Elite? Trophy wife? Laughable that most white Bajans, akin to southern rednecks in every way, shape, and form, are allowed to prance and preen around play acting as gentile to-the-manner born types within a predominantly Black population. I’ve seen this “decorator” cum garbage gifter out at various functions and she is indeed hideous. With her faux posh Brit mannerisms and vomit inducing name dropping, she is as vulgar as she is ugly. Sir COW is land rich and cash poor, that is why the “Lady” must work. Good luck trying to get your pound of flesh, Lisa. But GOOD for business. I’ll pass through your shop next week.

  19. @ Jeff Cumberbatch
“Bad manners and gaucherie are not criminal offenses, Lisa.”

Thanks for the legal insight. What about illegal dumping? If a Lady Ga Ga Bage comes into your place of business with Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dee and deposits a box of garbage you want to posit that it’s just bad manners? Gaucherie? Really?

  20. Ross I am still waiting to get some recruits. LOLL

  21. BT

“threats, bribery, intimidation….Ross was associating with Lawson”

You poor sod. Don’t be hurt. I still love you..

  22. jeff Cumberbatch Avatar

David, I do not think that the pride and reputation of anyone should be dented by a substantial number of anonymous contributions on a blog, even if the individual concerned reads it. For those many of us who did not know the individual before, we will each have our own opinion of her going forward, but since she is not a politician or a public figure, I doubt she could care less what those not in her social circles think of her. She certainly does not form part of my social grouping. I am not trying to deny Lisa her “moment in the sun”, but I am just wondering how she intends to redress this perceived wrong, other than through a naming and shaming on a popular blog.

Nostradamus@1:02 pm -Are these all the facts? Nothing at all was said? Just a simple deposit of a box of garbage with two goons?

  23. @Jeff

And this is the point, it is not about you it is about her and Barbadians generally. If my Lisa’s action it forces a normal docile Barbadian to be more assertive of their rights we say bravo.

  24. Naming and shaming people comes with a responsibilty .the possibilty that the other person felt she was wronged is real confounded by the fact that people with whom she has never come in contact with on BU has used this avenue to tarnish and blemish her character

  25. David

Your 12.42 post was nice. But tell me. “The importance of advocacy in a democracy…”…..you mean the ‘democracy’ that’s practised here? The ‘democracy according to David’? Well, I don’t think you can be charged with demonstrating respect for views other than yours – so I guess that’s democracy. Now – be a man and go join Islandgal with some refuse.

  26. jeff Cumberbatch Avatar

    @David,

We are agreed on this. I suppose we differ only on whether Lisa is indeed being “more assertive” of her rights (and thus forcing Barbadians to be) by not seeking to vindicate them in what is generally accepted to be the most effective fashion, but rather by doing so through this method of blog and social media exposure. If that’s her choice, so be it. Perhaps I was trained differently!

  27. @Jeff

We may disagree but BU believes in the same way ‘lady’ Mary-Anne expressed her frustration and outrage by placing a box of garbage on the floor of a young entrepreneur during normal business hours so too Lisa has that right to exhaust legal channels available to express similar outrage at what was an unladylike action. Even if she was genuinely agrieved about finding a box of garbage with Lisa’s company name on the box what she did searching for satisfaction was reprehensible and piggish behaviour. Of this we are certain.

  28. David

We are now very close to common ground.

  29. jeff Cumberbatch Avatar

Indeed, David@1:50pm. There is no disagreement whatsoever to your view as expressed here. And I like your adjective “piggish”. Well chosen, I think.

  30. Indeed Jeff, the next time we address this issue we will highlight other issues which the ‘illegal dumping’ has exposed.

  31. One
I don’t understand how it is not criminal for 3 people to walk into Lisa’s boutique and leave a box of garbage.Unlike you I wasted my time at school so my simple mind just don’t get it.

    Two.
I completely understand Lisa’s anger at being confronted by 3 people including 2 males in threatening circumstances and since violence is not a solution naming and shaming is a viable option.

  32. Yes David we should address illegal dumping and try to suggest solutions.

Clearly Bajans need to be educated to change the bad habits.

The same way (after coming to Canada) I had to stop spitting on the ground and peeing behind the nearest tree or wall so too can Bajans at home.

  33. @ Hants

    Sedition and anarchy.

    Indeed you jest.

You mean that the normal bajan passtime of stopping drinking rum in the rum shop or playing draughts in the taxi stand in Broad Street to go an piss pun a wall in the Alley, ignoring the chemical toilets provided, is now to be outlawed and possibly the exposers of their short doggies may be fined?

What kind of madness are you suggesting?

You have to be smoking the same blackies (not to be confused with niggers and hunkies) as the assuredly committable AC!!

David[BU] I am still holding you to that ban on you know who….

BTW doan tell me that Lawson and Well Well is the same body, man i like Well Well, Lawson trying to get point with Lady Porkie and Jeff trying to get work in the New Year LOL

  34. @Lawson

Your post @ 8.13 made a lot of sense, unfortunately it will not resonate with those who see everything in “Black and White” and ignore the shades of grey. This indiscriminate dumping occurs with ever increasing regularity and many of those of more modest means would do exactly the same but don’t have access to the same resources as the pugnacious “Lady W”.

It’s time that the authorities step up and prosecute those who pay a cavalier attitude towards the law; if the price of illegal dumping is an order to clean up the site (if you are caught) then that is a penalty that the scofflaws are willing to risk.

My solution- a dent in their wallets- 1st offence fine;2nd offence double fine; 3rd offence triple fine and incarceration and a ban on any permits authorising the removal and disposition of garbage. A small country cannot afford to pay lip service to issues affecting the environment.

  35. what is interesting about this article is that the one side given and most of the responses collectively have one thing in common a hatred of lady cow….what if the garbage was money instead returned, i doubt very much the article would have generated as many comments. or even if there would have been an article,,,,,,,,

  36. @PUDR

    Some comments provide comic relief,,,,,lol.

  37. Sargeant Common sense shoudnt get in the way of a good story. Lol Vile things have been said about this woman and those that are aghast at the box of garbage returned, allow the comments to slide by without a murmur. This is why Barbados is doomed the racists among you go unchallenged both white and black. Your island has become dirty, more polarized than ever I agree with you about fines, but you cant even stop your people from letting their dogs shit on the beaches… oh yeah your biggest money earner..
.Hants please teach Rob Ford what you have learned

  38. PUDR
The pig name hoagie man!Lady hoagie and sir cow man!
    Jeff
    David rsponded well at 12.42pm.

  39. No ac, the common thread is surely your asinine interjections. It must take some kind of special talent to be so stupid…..shiite gal, you have refined ignorance to an art form….

    @ David
Jeff demonstrates the negative aspect of using your real name on a blog. His choices are to say nothing – and be thought to be in accord with the general trend that Mrs COW is a pig, …..or to strike some scholarly non-committal position that does not upset SIR COW’s new pal SIR Hilary…. Bushie suspects that his inclination to the latter approach may have been precipitated by strategic attempts to throw some oil on Sir COW’s current rough seas…..
In Jeff’s position Bushie would probably have painted a picture of great frustration by the “Lady” leading to a highly regretted hot- headed reaction which was subsequently deeply regretted…. 🙂
….after all, if you own Half of the damn island you HAVE to be a BIG victim – based on the way Bajans do this shiite…

    @ Ross
    We cool.
Forget the “love” thing though….Bushie don’t mek that kinda sport… The bushman just calls it as he sees it….and you are without question, a status quo man….. 🙂

    LOL @ Lawson
Bushie can always tell when the truth hurts…but fret not….
…it only stings a bit at first – then it will set you free… LOL

  40. Would love to read Shelly’s view of tis incident.

  41. ,,,,,,,there is only one side given and the intellectual midgets like bush tea knows the, real story…….holy COW

  42. @Bushie

Jeff is a good guy and must be commended for rubbing shoulders with us lowly bloggers.

  43. LOL
No doubt David, but he uses his own name – and you know who is his boss? …that is another blog again…. 🙂
…think he is Bushie nuh? Jeff probably got a big able mortgage and thing….now if he had a little bushman shack and a weed whacker….!!!
    LOL
He ain’t no Caswell either….everybody that could fire Caswell done fire he….Caswell now fireproof….

  44. I’ve heard time and time again that Barbados is a dirty place….. Now, I am sitting here wondering to whom are these people comparing Barbados to?

  45. @Mark Fenty

Some of us are comparing to a Barbados of not too long ago.

  46. A beach worker like Tall Boy soon will let Lady Cow know wha God she serves, remember the agriculture lawyer with the English wife

  47. jeff Cumberbatch Avatar

Not so, David. I do not consider anyone here, even Bush Tea (lol), to be merely “a lowly blogger”. I appreciate the fact that my views are often challenged here and that I can’t expect something to be accepted simply because I said it. Not even on complex points of law!

@Bushie, my position on this was stated in my first post last night and my views on anything are not influenced or coloured by what the Principal of Cave Hill might think. Indeed, my boss is only 14 years old…bless her soul!

  48. Ad btw bush tea if u insist and pesist on harrasing me .i will in no uncertain terms return the favour of dumping a truck load of horse sh..t on your front door and if that is not enough to send A message i would implore my thugs to beat down your swarny a…ss. get it.

  49. @ ac
Bushie will actually pay you for the horse shit, and your “thugs” would probably fall over backwards if they approached Bushie….LOL
    …how much per load…?
    @ Jeff
    14 years old….
Darn…. Even worse than Sir H.
The worse kind of bosses are the ones you love….
For them a fella would sell he soul yuh….
    ….lucky you.

  50. BT

I would hope we all call it as we see it. But, yes, RR a status quo man……babes.

BTW – are you gonna leave your gal Island on her own AGAIN? Go on BT – be the first. Bring your wacker if you like or a man to work it if you feel you’re too old. I won’t mind and the cause would ne noble as the crowd on BU must surely agree if only they dared lift a finger – a bit like John Brown before Harper’s Ferry. So yes – the battle of Lady Cow’s patch – be a hero…
