Former Prime Minister Owen Arthur

Imagine a man trying to curry favour with the business community, whom he seems to have in the palm of his hands anyhow, telling them something completely opposite of what he has been telling other Barbadians recently.

The man – OSA; the place – the Hilton Hotel; the occasion – the Barbados Chamber of Commerce Luncheon last week; the pandering comment – it is time this government cuts back expenditure on health and education, and offer incentives to the private sector so it can invest in these areas.

Now, rewind to the 28th of June this year, the place – the House of Assembly; the occasion – the Budget Debate; the comment for the masses on live radio television – government has to put more resources into education and health. We must invest in our young people and in their future, give the UWI more money, pay them what you owe them.

Again, a couple months ago at a function at the Cave Hill campus, OSA was admonishing the government about any plans to cut back on education. However, standing before a clearly partisan business sector, with several of his lackeys in tow, he was brownnosing them. This ‘brilliant’ modern-day chameleon really forgot that the news media were present, and his remarks would be reported.

Reminds me of his address to a group in the Bahamas a couple years ago. He told them at the time that he understood their pain as they were not the only ones experiencing the throes of the recession. He said it was a worldwide phenomenon and they had to aim to ride it out. However, the same man was telling Barbadians, before and after that candid address, that the recession was only in Barbados, and it was because of the bad policies pursued by the current government.

Any proposed cuts in health and education would surely affect the small man and the average Barbadian. But, then again, members of the Chamber of Commerce are not average Barbadians. Tell OSA that the private sector does not invest in education, since they do not see any real benefits accruing to them. They do not even give their staff time off to attend classes at Cave Hill. Staffers usually have to retire. And, in health, they would be looking for quick returns from upscale facilities and pricey fees that are outside the reach of the small man..

So, we must ask again: Who is Fooling Whom? If government cuts back on health and education services there will be massive job losses. Sounds as if the BLP are suddenly embracing the astringencies of the IMF. Look how times have changed!

By the way, now that we are on to myths, OSA told his Chamber of Commerce audience that one of the best things his administration did was to sell the government shares in the then BNB (now Republic Bank) because it created employment. Well that is another canard. The only employment it created was jobs for people in Trinidad, where all the profits are remitted and where all the decisions are made. On the contrary, several Barbadians have lost jobs at BNB since the total take over. Indeed, some customers were so upset with the recent name change they have closed their accounts and gone to other financial institutions.

However, this claptrap from the polymathic journalist, Patrick Hoyos,  a sometimes business/financial expert and reporter/publisher, whose only claim to fame is a string of failed businesses, takes the cake.  An extract from his last Sunday Sun column, which praised the same Owen Arthur’s address to the Chamber of Commerce, noted: “… the policy of the Worrell-Sinckler-Dolittle (in that order) Administration, which has been to keep Government workers employed while caring nothing for how their counterparts in the private sector fared,  …. has failed miserably.” UNBELIEVABLE! And imagine, it came from no less a person than a mouthpiece/apologist, diehard supporter and puppet of the Barbados Labour Party. He speaks for them.

What Hoyos is saying is that Government should abandon the public servants and send them packing. Lay them off in droves, he urges, like what the private sector is doing. Let us have what is currently happening in Greece, Spain, England, Portugal, Holland, Belgium, Italy, the rest of the EU and Jamaica replicated here. UTTER NONSENSE Mr. Hoyos. Then, you and the BLP would walk the length and breadth of Barbados and bellow that the DLP has put thousands of public servants on the breadline. Won’t happen!

Relatedly, no less outrageous was the suggestion last Tuesday, on the floor of the House of Assembly by MP Ronald Toppin, that instead of Barbados passing legislation to allow casino gambling by passengers aboard cruise ships here (not Barbadians), it should join with other regional governments and seek to purchase a cruise ship. Well, well! What madness! Can you believe it? All cash-strapped countries, barely surviving in a relentless, global recession, and struggling to keep their heads above water, should now try to raise over US$600 million to purchase a ship. We could not handle the little Federal Palm and Federal Maple; a proposed $1million inter-island ferry never got passed being someone’s idea; little Red Jet floundered; and LIAT is having problems; yet, we must, I presume, borrow money and invest in a billion dollar cruise liner. Maybe, we will call it the SS Rockin’ Toppin.

Please God, spare us from the hands of the BLP! Mr. Toppin, wheel and come again Sir!

HONESTY AND MORALS vs Corruption and someone who wants to legalise Homosexuality

In all of the writings on here and in the Nation or ANYEWHERE there is NO WHERE where it holds Arthur and Mottley up for their VALUES of HONESTY, TRUST WORTHY, WITH MORAL VALUES AND GOOD DECENCY.

Do we want to revert to theft and corruption Ah La Arthur / Mottley, or to the lack of MORAL and FAMILY VALUES as with Arthur / Mottley as clearly defined by Arthur in his speech from UWI when he Arthur said that she had too many skeletons ever to lead and she had no MORALS.

There is one thing that clearly separtes their offerings for leadership versus the Leadership of the DLP, MR STUART is beyond reproach when it comes to his HONESTY and his MORAL VALUES are unquestionable and cannot be challenged, Chalk and Cheese the two offerings.

    old onion bags(FRIGG YOU DAVID)

You are always harping on the fact that the fly overs were scrapped.

“When it comes to infrastructure, politicians usually prefer shiny new projects over humdrum repairs. A brand-new highway is exciting: There’s a ribbon-cutting, and there’s less need to clog up existing lanes with orange cones and repair crews. So it’s not surprising that 57 percent of all state highway funding goes toward new construction, often stretching out to the suburbs, even though new roads represent just 1.3 percent of the overall system.”
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/wp/2012/10/03/we-dont-need-to-build-more-highways-out-in-the-suburbs/

Even in the US people are getting fed up with all this government new construction. This is all done at the expense of maintainence and repair of existing infrastructure.

But of course the corrupt Barbados Labour Party likes new construction because there is lots more taxpayers to steal, ribbon cutting, press attention and the illusion that something valuable is being done all while the old infrastructure crumbles. There are so many examples of this in Barbados.

The bottom is that there is not a lot of money in repairs to steal hence the Barbados Labour Party is not interested.

Tell me if I hit the nail on the head onions.

This is Bermuda the country which the Barbados Labour Party is always showcasing as a sterling example.

“Hotel revenues hit as visitor numbers drop”

“Business and leisure visitor numbers were down in the second quarter of 2012, resulting in a negative knock-on effect in the hospitality and retail sector.

According to Government’s Quarterly Bulletin of Statistics, air arrivals during the second quarter of 2012 fell by 6.6 percent when compared to the same quarter of 2011.

A total of 75,186 visitors flew to the Island, down from the 80,462 that visited by air in 2011. This decrease was attributed to a 12 percent decline in business travellers and a 13 percent decline in leisure travellers. Arrivals from the United States, Bermuda’s largest tourist market, decreased 7.8 percent when compared to the second quarter of 2011.

The decline in air arrivals resulted in a 6.6 percent drop in bookings at tourist accommodations.

Guest houses registered the biggest decrease, falling 32.3 percent.

Occupancy at resort hotels fell by 10.1 percent while visitors staying at housekeeping accommodations also declined, by nine percent. Sales revenue for resort hotels dipped $6.8 million or by nearly ten percent.”

  9. @ Carson

“tell me about Mia after Seethru blister her backside, stick his long knife in her back, along with his parliamentary friends, kick her to the curb, carrying away the leader of the opposition post from her and she is now saying how happy she is to be treated in the worst way by short man.”

Carson, you DLP pimps really have short memories, don’t you. The type of backstabbing you are referring to was first perpetrated by Thomson, Sealy, Jones, et al against Clyde Macsoll. I think both events have similar characteristics, the most significant being, in your words Carson, “carrying away the leader of the opposition post”.

    @ ac

“pray tell me how a man can stached away 75 thousand dollars and get the public yourself included to believe it was all legal money intended for another purpose”

The CLICO forensic audit can answer that for you ac. Did it not reveal a similar undertaking by Thompson and Parris, remember the $M3.3?

    Artaxerxes

I know that you dont have a lot of common sense because you belong to the corrupt Barbados Labour Party, but try using your head for a change.

There is a saying in Barbados among some men and I guess that includes you as well, that the worst you treat a Bajan woman, the more she likes you.

Seethru treat MIA like something he scrapped off his shoe sole. She wicked, she nasty, Bajans would never accept she as a PM of this country he said. While in Parliament trying to fight off the onslaught of the DLP instead of coming to her rescue he up at UWI in his aircondition room and lambasting her with the press of Barbados. He never once supported her in anything when she was Leader of the Opposition. I still have the newspaper with all that Seethru said against MIA and I will use it in due time.

MIA has done a tremendous disservice to all women of Barbados by sucking up to her ABUSER. NOW TELL ME HOW THAT CAN BE RIGHT? What she is saying to women of Barbados is that it is all right to be abuse and misused by Bajan men. Something that is totally unacceptable to right thinking people.

I will soon start quoting from the newpaper of the time and ask Bajan voters to tell me if what Seethru did is right!!

We also have another Barbados Labour Party scallywag who beat up his wife and cut her car seats and is now running for Parliament, I will have something to say about him as well. He knows a lot about metal dumps now. Maybe that is where he ought to be.

All of these Bajan woman abusers in the Barbados Labour Party should be Jail , not in our Parliament.

  38. BLP supporters will be in for a big surprise if their party is successful. The difference between now and the 1994 scenario is that the tough measures that had to be instituted were already implemented in 1994 when the BLP won and the world economy was picking up.
Not so on this occasion, the UK economy is still in recession and our public sector wage bill still high. The BLP will have to cut the wage bill and send home government workers either directly or indirectly through privatisation and the sad reality is that many of those sent home will be BLP supporters.

  39. There has never been a period in Barbados of sustained growth that was not correlated with growth in our major trading partners.
We need foreign exchange for everything in Barbados including the inputs for goods manufactured here. The issue in 2013 is where will the inflow of foreign exchange come from and does it make a difference which party is in power as far as earning foreign exchange is concerned?

“The BLP will have to cut the wage bill and send home government workers either directly or indirectly through privatisation and the sad reality is that many of those sent home will be BLP supporters.”

So you are looking ahead and can see that Barbados is looking down the barrel of an economic and financial gun?

Let us assume that the electorate decides to give the DLP another chance to clean up the mess how would the problems you have identified as staring us right in the face be tackled? Would the DLP send home only appointed known BLP supporters and keep those taken on in the last 5 years?
Do you think that sending home BLP supporters would be the answer or key to the restructuring of the public sector; replacing one set of incompetents with another lot of politically chosen incompetents?

Whichever party is elected to govern the problems will be same. The difference however is which has the better management team, competence, track record and political will and decision-making aptitude to do what is necessary. Certainly imposing more taxation on the people is a definite recipe for total economic collapse and social unrest.

But one thing that can be argued is that Barbados forex is under severe stain and overseas loans are needed to bring about the requisite economic restructuring. At this stage nobody is going to lend the country money under the present political mob. This DLP administration has cussed and criticized the very people who are in position to help us out. The IMF has issued a temporary ‘economic contamination’ order on Barbados: Presently under the surveillance of the Credit Rating agencies. Don’t touch until further notice!
