The issue of declining morals in our societies is one which BU remains very concerned.  We have recorded our view in previous blogs; the issue of homosexuality is one of a moral flavour and not the rights issue in which the gay movement has been able to escalate this issue. The recent same sex marriage which occurred in Latin America and  the arrest of a gay couple in Malawi has given renewed currency to the gay debate. There is no doubt the movement is beginning to probe the  Caribbean space in a more aggressive manner. Our hoppa-long leaders will have to declare a position soon. The next two years will make for interesting politics in the Caribbean region.

Tomorrow at 2PM Bajan time, the BBC World Service will broadcast its popular program World Have Your Say. A BU blog, A Step Too Far Or Fairness And Equality: Same Sex Partner’s Legal Rights posted by family member Yardbroom has been featured on the BBC blog which promotes tomorrow’s radio show. Unfortunately BU (David) had to decline the BBC invitation to be on the show tomorrow; a challenge which BU will have to overcome at some point.

The gay debate has reached an interesting point in the US and the UK especially. There is a willingness to accept gay relationships but hesitancy when taking the normal next step to marriage. This current state of affairs is being described as duplicitous to say the least.

For those who are not able to listen live we hope to post a link to the Podcast to the program for the BU family.

    Forgive the lateness of my response I was otherwise engaged.
    My comments were addressing the bloger who wrote:
    “Tell me how long would a Bajan marriage last if the husband withdrew all financial, practical and social privilidges? can any Bajan marriage last a year if the husband decided to stop being “useful?”
    Can any Bajan marriage last if the husband decided to stop being “useful?” (unquote)

    A wife could easily be inserted in place of husband in the above comment; I therefore failed to see the logic of it.

    My statement highlighted that in a union as in marriage, partners bring different benefits to the union and in good marriages partners give what they are “capable” of giving, in that sense they are “useful” to that particular marriage.

    Re position:
    My position has not changed as you seem to suggest; what is now more “evident” is that I do not believe what I think is the only way – my reasoning in putting forward submissions – I am not that dogmatic. I have no intention of being a brick wall.

    I believe that homosexuals should be protected by Law, they should be accorded the rights and privileges civilised society has to offer. Not only because they are homosexuals but because they are human beings.

    If I am asked is their “marriage” the same as a male female marriage, then I say to my way of thinking it is not and I am yet to be persuaded it is. That is my position, it is with no antagonism or hate towards homosexuals.

    I have not been able to make the mental adjustment for such an accommodation…I am yet to be persuaded.

    Ps: Are you the same anonymous who told me what “I” should submit for discussion on Barbados Underground? since then I have not written another one; to give you space for yours but I have not seen yours on the topics you suggested, are you still “thinking” about them?

    I have used tolerance when dealing with most of the gay issues but at this point I am using logic to understand same sex marriage and so far the whole idea does not make sense.
    I am not one to go along just to get along , my mind has to premit to thoroughly understand the facts before I make a decision.

    Homosexuality among males is something that seems to be a born trait. Male homosexuals are indeed the third gender. Homosexuality among females is different. A woman can be induced into a same sex relationship; even though she may have very been a heterosexual. This for me is where the real problem/threat lies…!

    Gay marriage is based solely on equality. There is nothing more to it. Gay men and women having been living together in committed relationships throughout time. The issue of promiscuity among gay is another matter ( similar to promiscuity among west indian men) and it does not take away from the right to get married. If we halted marriage for ALL promiscuous people LOL they would be few marriages in BIM.
    Marriage has very little to do with religion. Marriage is more about law and tradition.
    ‘Marriage’ is also just a term. If the gays are given all the rights of all married couplesas they should be to withhold the title ‘marriage’ would be to say that they are not equal.

    Single owmne raise children without fathers around … two men cant do much worse in my opinion. I know of one married gay couple that have emplyed a female nanny to help with the raising of their daughter so as to include a female figure…. not sure if this is necessary bu we have many single mothers that have no men around AT ALL!
    so far so good the child is doing well.

    Again, homosexuality is not a civil or human right issue. Homosexuality and all of its appendage issues is about the right of people to have sex with someone within the same gender group to which they were naturallky born into. It is an issue about sex. Take away sex, and the issue would not exist.

    If the debate is conducted within a false paradigm established by sympathisers of the movement, it will inevitably deviate from the core of the issue and languish in the eternal question of whether “Happy” people should have the right to marry. My position is since people have no problem in the creation of new genders in this world, then they should create institutions akin to marriage that are specific to those genders.

    The insitution of marriage is specific to heteorosexual union. It was created by Heteorosexuals, for heteorosexuals, and intended for heteorosexual cotious. If homosexuals feel that they are deserving of a system to make sacrosanct their coming together, then by all means let them take the initiative and institute one

    We are one peg and jump away from a demand by pedophiles for the right to have sex with and marry their under aged love interests. Because their issue, like that of gays, is also one of sex. It is also one of sexual connection in areas that were once unlawful, unethical and immoral.

    @ this point, I feel compelled to jump in here in defense of BU’s outrage, but it is more about a sense of perspective on the matter.

    Simple Simon made a powerful statement as follows:
    Man + Women = Child
    Man + Man, or Woman + Woman =Disease and early death!

    Like the professor in an earlier posted video said, we either choose it or nature will choose it for us.

    What we are experiencing is certainly a population problem and when we apply the exponential function, we see that in a very short time the human population will explode. It is about that time when we either manage ourselves or nature will take care of it.

    Maybe homosexuality is one of those corrective measures but inclusive are war, murders, diseases, etc.

    There are some who say the issues surrounding homosexuals and marriage are not worthy of discussion. I beg to differ.

    As we sit at ease and discuss this subject. The first gay couple to marry in Malawi, Africa, Tiwonge Chimbalanga (20 years) and Steven Monjeza (26 years) could be sentenced to 14 years in prison if found guilty of unnatural practices between males.

    They have been arrested, the couple deny consummating their relationship. The state prosecutor has applied for them to be sent to hospital to prove thay had had sex together.

    It is through discussion we know of the plight of others, it does not matter what our position is on the matter…we must think of fellow human beings.

    If a Blogg is to have any relevance and be current…it must be prepared to tackle difficult issues, but with fairness.

    I have no negative feelings about gays who want to live like heterosexuals. I would prefer that they (gays) be monogamous among themselves instead of being bisexual; in some cases to camouflage their true identity by dating and/or marrying the opposite sex and later causing harm to the other person.

    Having said that, I just think the act of:
    2 women making love is foolishness AND
    2 men are an awful offense.

    On a serious note, homosexuals should be treated fairly like any other human. I truly don’t see what the fuss is all about if they want to marry, which could be for other reasons other than pledging their love to each other.

    I think with the way laws are written in some jurisdictions, although these 2 people may have lived together for many years, if something is to happen to one of them, a next of kin could take some/all from that remaining partner regardless of contribution.

    If they are not allowed to marry, then a Civil Union law should be established for those who may want to go down that road.

    I dont think we need to delve into what consenting adults do in the privacy of their bedrooms do we??? if we were flies on the wall of many Bajan bedrooms I am sure that we would be surprised at the range of sexual activity even amongst supposed heterosexual people. That is not my concern in this discussion!

    So please counter with something of substance as to why taxpaying, law abiding, consenting adult, community involved and respected same sex couples should not have the same rights as everyone else????

    As any heterosexual couples posting on BU ever tried to adopt a child? It ain’t easy!! I do not believe that because two people (even of different genders) are married that adoption of children will be automatically allowed.

    I have always felt that the only reason for marriage was to facilitate the establishment of a family. That is, to clearly delineate property rights and determine who had primary responsibility for the raising of children. Unfortunately the historically indiscriminate and irresponsible behaviour of many people (coupled with advances in medical technology) has rendered this traditional idea of marriage pointless and actually emboldens gays in their quest for legitimacy.

    As a traditionalist I can, at best, accept the “civil union but not marriage” idea but given that the contemporary concept of marriage really now means little more than a public expression of affection between two people it becomes hard to deny gays their wish for marriage.
