Let us be clear, BU wishes Rihanna well in her chosen career. She has done well if we measure success by the penetration she has made in the world of pop. The BU household has watched her progression with admiration and interest. The recognition which Rihanna has brought to Barbados was rewarded by the government of Barbados last year. After the material possessions were received,  she was given the official papers to be Ambassador for Youth and Culture.

In light of her recent indiscretions and now her topless pose in Vogue Magazine, the question asked by BU and others remains. Should the government of Barbados ask Rihanna to quietly relinquish the post of Ambassador for Youth and Culture? Perhaps given her schooling at the Waterford University she should have the awareness to not wait to be asked.

Since the Chris Brown incident it seems Rihanna has been on a hunt for publicity by any means necessary. We understand these PR stunts all do wonder for her career but what does it do for her image in the eyes of young Barbadians who currently worship her? Rihanna finds herself in a position where she can trod the worn trail or she could use a hoe to chop a new path. She now has the popularity which equips he to  make a positive difference. It seems she is allowing the American pop culture to quickly reel her in.

It is interesting even as we talk of Rihanna’s meteoric rise in the world of pop tongues are wagging about the dizzying spiral which Michael Jackson the King of Pop suffered. He operated in the world of glitz and glamour which is attached to the unavoidable dark side of drugs and stupidity.  Does anyone really think that Michael Jackson died from a few recent injections of benzodiazepines and a reduced dose of propofol? Or was his death secondary to long term use of drugs?

How much of the full or true pathology reported has been released? We have heard about toxicology? Was his heart and kidneys and liver functioning properly in the light of decades of drug abuse? What if…..?

There is a lot Rihanna can learn from how the King of Pop died. Many of us still remember the innocent looking little boy from the Jackson 5 fame. Over the years as he was reeled into the culture of pop his innocence faded and he became what?

Rihanna we wished you well but we urge you to consider relinquishing the title of Ambassador of Youth and Culture.

Barbados will benefit more from Rihanna instead of Rihanna benefiting from Barbados.     Bajans are the world’s biggest hyppocrites! With 70% of our population born out of wedlock (yes! MORE than two thirds!) that means that our mothers have been spreading their “nets” far and wide to catch an income, sorry, a man, to give them support!

    It means we have to be watchful in our next generations’ relationships else we find brothers marrying sisters. We all know this to be true! It happens more frequently than we care to admit.

    It means we foop around but talk nasty about everyone else, especially females. We are the world’s greatest moralists…as long as we aren’t forced to do as we say! Yes, sad but true, we are the world’s greatest hyppocrites! A bunch of sanctimonious, two faced, lecherous, unfaithful, gold-digging, like-you for-your-money, disease-spreading losers! (Truth hurts, doesn’t it?) This truth is manifested by us having the highest AIDS and HIV infection rates in this part of the world, after Brazil. (WHO statistics) I.e.,if we weren’t so brashly fooping around we would have a much much lower infection rate.

    And instead of us breaking the cycle, keeping one partner, learning to parent our kids not in the old, hypocritical way, educating our young men and women about fidelity, sexual awareness, responsibility and humanity we continue the cycle and our kids, who learn their behavior and sexual mores from the adults in turn continue the cycle. Then we have the gall to call the Rihannas of our world a slut! We are but a bunch of sad jokers and losers, aren’t we?

    Rihana looks like a Grace Jones, if you must have some familiar reference point, but even better. Grace was revered by the music and art world for her avant garde style and attitude.

    Anyone familiar with Italian art publications and culture will immediately understand the point of reference of her photo shoot. It is tasteful, arty and very well photographed. You cannot see the aureolae of her breasts (tits or nipples for the ignorant) and so it left for the viewer’s imagination. (We are so parochial in our small-minded thinking). If this leans toward smut then that is how the magazine cover will be perceived. If one sees it as art, then art it is and so on. It is Vogue Magazine, for heaven’s sake! Probably the most prestigious fashion publication in the world. And a Barbadian/Guyanese is on it. I am so proud! Aren’t you?

    Who can prove she’s not smart enough to manage her own finances? Just because someone blogs that she’s unable to doesn’t make this the truth. And who can say with certainty that she was an innocent girl going into her career. Naive maybe, until she learned how the industry works, but gullible? Not Robyn Fenty, I assure you. Jackie and her husband Evan Rogers (why do some of you have to mention that he’s white? What’s his color to do with his management ability or his character? Why do Bajans have to bring a human’s color into any debate at all?) have got her back.

    They won’t allow Rihanna to be robbed for the simple reason that their livelihoods depend on their reputations as impeccably honest artiste managers. It’s as simple as that but the nasty-minded provincials here fail to understand that that is how the world works. We do dishonest things, get fired, NEVER get prosecuted and go on to the next job because we have the “Cuh Dear” mentality. “Gi she/he a chance” is the norm and…we end up “tiefing” again. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN IN THE INTERNATIONAL MUSIC INDUSTRY. Artiste managers CANNOT afford to lose their good reputations.

    Rihanna, poor soul, gets more nasty grief from her own in her little hometown than from anywhere else in the entire world. And we are so proud as Bajans to tear her down, aren’t we?

    Dear Richie:

    You may understand about international artistes management, but you don’t understand a thing about sociology/anthropology. Having a child out of wedlock does not mean that a woman “foops around” If you will take the time to observe your own society (instead of parroting the views of those who do not know us) you will find that many a woman who has a child out of wedlock, subsequently marries the father of her first child, and those marriages last just as long as any others ; my own mother had 2 children before marriage, but subsequently married her children’s father and remained married to him for more than 60 years, would you accuse my honored mother of being a foopster? Also many a woman who has her first child out of wedlock subsequently marries or lives faithfully with her second child’s father.

    It is absolute nonsense to accuse a woman who has had one man (or two) in a lifetime of “fooping-around”

    She is back and more exposed than ever. Continued success in the entertainment world apparently leads to more flashing of the flesh, particularly if you do not have any unique natural talents.

    However, if this is what the image culture wants, you have it, and they are willing to pay for it, more power to you girl.

    You can measure the longevity of today’s entertainers by their facial and body appearance and their willingness to take off their clothing bit by bit over a period of years.

    Their music apparently has little staying power beyond 6 months. Pubic hairs, butt, and nipples next.

    Done in stages this should cover the next 9-10 years, of her career.

    Sheri, maybe I should try one of my old tactics from years ago, when I was a randy (sex-mad), young thing!
