The following was sent to the blogmaster’s inbox after an ‘old-timer’ read a few back in time blogs – Blogmaster
You certainly taken me back to the late mid 50´s into the 60´s.
I remember Douggies, my father always used to take there to get a Hamburger and a 7up Float sometimes on a Saturday evening, however, he did not like Jeffs?
At my school Miss Barrows private school was situated on Belmont Road, some of the children were always afraid to mention or talk bout heart man, don’t go walking late at night because the heart man will meet ya near 4 cross roads, piece of folklore taboo.
My wise grandmother used Lifebouy soap but for heavy duty washing, my khaki shirts and pants and my sister’s uniform she always had a big block of “Bomber blue laundry soap” for washing those clothes.
There was the late Louis Lynch Modern High School on Roebuck Street closed down in the mid 70´s, I went to that school, Headmaster Louis Lynch was known to give boys a lambaste spanking with dry bamboo rods if you were a ‘troubletree’.
I also remember characters like “Dilute my Soup” and a notorious female ” Bajan Patsy” and a young character at school called “Knuckafingers” a boy who lost all his fingers , we did not know then that he was stricken with polio at birth.
Also at home if ya got a bruise on ya legs my father had “Iodex”or “witchhazel” which helped to cool down the swelling and to get ya gwine to school. There was the imported “Buckfast Tonic Wine” or some “Eno fruit salts” to furnish and improving one’s good health and pick a pear = (Avocado) before it´s time don´t eat the pear yet it `force-ripe`
I had a good laugh reading some Bajan cultural dialectic sayings most of what you have written I remember and lived through most those times and spaces growing up as young boy.` cheese don bread`
Thank ya man!
