STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE NEW NATIONAL PARTY on the irregular financial findings within the Office of Ambassador for Climate Change & Law of Seas
Transparency is key to good governance and the issue of transparency has yet again stumped the government’s toe as questions need to be asked about the suspicious & irregular findings within the financial operations of the ambassadorial posts for Climate Change & Law of Seas . The office holder is Deputy President of the Senate Elizabeth Thompson.
No historical record of expenditure can be found for the ambassador’s post for years 2021-2024. No record of expenses can be found within the Prime Minister’s head or The Ministry of Foreign Affairs head. Therefore there is no way possible to track the expenses occurring within this office since it has been established in 2021.
The Ambassador for Climate Change & Law of Seas has been allocated $408’157 in 2024-2025. For FY 2025-2026, this figure mysteriously and alarmingly increased to $1.2 Million.

This irregular increase is being red flagged as a tripling of the budget allocated to this office headed by Deputy President of the Senate Elizabeth Thompson. This irregular increase to $1.2 Million from up $408K is driven by a $800K allocation in operating expenses given to the office of Ambassador for Climate Change & Law of Seas.
Since the emergence of US president Donald Trump climate change has taken a serious backseat therefore this irregular increase should be justified to the taxpayers of Barbados as $800K increase with nothing to show and in times of hardship for Barbadians is crude and crass similar to the behaviour displayed by Liz Thompson on national TV.
