STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE NEW NATIONAL PARTY on the irregular financial findings within the Office of Ambassador for Climate Change & Law of Seas

Transparency is key to good governance and the issue of transparency has yet again stumped the government’s toe as questions need to be asked about the suspicious & irregular findings within the financial operations of the ambassadorial posts for Climate Change & Law of Seas . The office holder is Deputy President of the Senate Elizabeth Thompson.

No historical record of expenditure can be found for the ambassador’s post for years 2021-2024. No record of expenses can be found within the Prime Minister’s head or The Ministry of Foreign Affairs head. Therefore there is no way possible to track the expenses occurring within this office since it has been established in 2021.

The Ambassador for Climate Change & Law of Seas has been allocated $408’157 in 2024-2025. For FY 2025-2026, this figure mysteriously and alarmingly increased to $1.2 Million.

Table displaying the budget estimates for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade for the Climate Change, SID S & Law of the Sea for the fiscal years 2022-2026, showing various categories of expenditures and projected allocations.

This irregular increase is being red flagged as a tripling of the budget allocated to this office headed by Deputy President of the Senate Elizabeth Thompson. This irregular increase to $1.2 Million from up $408K is driven by a $800K allocation in operating expenses given to the office of Ambassador for Climate Change & Law of Seas.

Since the emergence of US president Donald Trump climate change has taken a serious backseat therefore this irregular increase should be justified to the taxpayers of Barbados as $800K increase with nothing to show and in times of hardship for Barbadians is crude and crass similar to the behaviour displayed by Liz Thompson on national TV.

  1. As a Hypothesis..

The extra Law of the Sea allocation may be for contingency planning for the shipping of goods from China etc directly to Barbados and Caribbean as a workaround for possible increased US Tariffs via Florida,

    — although the United States has allegedly exempted the Caribbean from a set of proposed tariffs targeting Chinese-built ships.

  2. Imagine referring to the Deputy President of the Senate, and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, as crass and crude.
Hypothesis two: the funds are to offset the true costs, of the Debt for climate swap.

  3. Curious,
Is it possible that she could exhibit that type of behavior?
Or does attaining high office in Barbados remove the possibility of being crass, crude and corrupt?

All people in high office everywhere are like Ceasar’s wife, beyond reproach.

    Lol!
