The next general election is constitutionally due in 2027. The Barbados Labour Party (BLP) won all 30 seats in 2018 and 2022. If the build up to the next general election follows the script, a third term government should be hearing the voice of a restless electorate getting louder, which should translate to winning the next government or making significant gains.

The dissenting voice of the people has been getting louder, BUT, unlike what transpired in the past, we have no political opposition that stands ready as the government in waiting. The other member of the political duopoly continues to busy itself with self destruct behaviour.

Since the 2018 general election civic minded Barbadians have become concerned at what represents democracy in Barbados. It has been awkward to observe members of the Lower House engaged in meaningless debate on one side of the divide.

The party loyalists and talking heads have been promoting an illogical argument that the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) is destined to be returned to the House by the electorate. What is being ignored is the probability of an unprecedented event occurring. There is a possibility the DLP has entered terminal decline mode. The next general election will validate the thought.

When all the talking is done, that is all that shall be done. Personal ambition is what motivates these people. Nothing will change until the people of Barbados demand change. And for the people of Barbados to forcefully demand change requires that they themselves change.

Donna

In the BLP’s first term there there was an effort to ‘try ah ting’ with Bishop Joseph Atherley crossing of the floor. It checked a box, however, a political opposition without an affiliation with an established political party was doomed to be rejected by the electorate. Added to which Atherley – through no fault of his own – lacked a winning political personality.

In this second term, we are witnessing a variant of what occurred in 2018. This time around the M.P. crossing the floor has an association with an established political party BUT there are some re-entry pains to overcome with minimal collateral damage. One could surmise Thorne and his supporters did not anticipate energetic push back from Yearwood and his team. At a time parties on both sides should be hunkered down behind closed doors negotiating a win win – we are having mouthings from party supporters that serve to suck the little political capital left at George Street by Barbadians.

Without meaning to be rude, one is left to ponder the character of actors involved considering what is at stake at the national level. It should not be that difficult for decision-makers within the two main factions to do a pulse check of the level of support for Yearwood and Thorne. Why is there the need to continue to bleed the DLP reputation and in the process compromise its standing in the eyes of an electorate searching for a credible alternative?

The next days and weeks will be critical for the actors at George Street to get it right in order to erase any thought that the D in DLP stands for DEAD.

You gotta know when to fold them. Best time is today or tomorrow- Saturday may make it seem like u rubbing DEM faces it in it. The other fraction holds all the aces including the 3 candidates most likely to win a seat next election.
RESIGN NOW!!! Don’t wait until the next 30 – 0 ( as is on the cards right now) it won’t be on ur head . Dem asking for u head now – it will be now or after the next election

Two years and not one candidate yet officially chosen to run in the next elections ???

  2. David, I also remember a Commission of Inquiry was established in 1987 by the then Barrow administration, to investigate the National Assistance Board.

  3. @Artax Can you remind us what happened with the special audit into activities at the TB the PAC started under the chairmanship of our previous LOTTO?

  4. Do you remember when the good Bishop was the leader of the opposition. During those years the DLP did an excellent job at playing dead. They did nothing, said nothing and rejected any offer that would have benefited them.

Now, the DLP is showing signs of life, but their efforts seem more suicidal than helpful. They would prefer to fight and nip at each other rather than run after the big fat, plodding, mistake prone administration.

It will not be 30-0, but shaping up to be nuff nuff – a few.

  5. Past is prologue. Verla DePeiza post election said she had been unable to unite the party. At that moment in time, Mr. Yearwood held no office in the party. He was later duly elected as President of the party. If in the haste to feed on the fatted calf inelegant if not downright spurious submissions are entertained and procedural propriety is cast aside as a barrier to grabbing political power and control of the treasury, it is not seen as a stretch to say that care should be exercised in maintaining a spotlight on how Mr. Yearwood and Mr. Blacket are treated by this mob. Tomorrow it may be the procedural niceties that the average citizen relies on which may be trampled.

We concur. Intellectual honesty always wins.
We apparently prefer obfuscation and semantic gymnastics .
We are really victims of the decaying political culture of the BLPDLP and their die hards , who don’t care about mal governance and corruption.

  8. Reiterating Dr. Yearwood should step down and or retreat to how President of the party has operated in the past. Allow Thorne to leverage the weight of political leader of the party which was triggered once accepted as a member of the DLP (when he crossed). He is the only one with a seat, he holds the golden chip.

  9. David, that PAC special audit of Transport Board ‘died a sudden death.’

  10. NorthernObserver Avatar
    NorthernObserver

    @Artax
It may have been sudden, but it was expected, and was determined to be from ‘natural causes’😊

  11. @Artax

The question was asked to raise the point about the usefulness of the PAC and by extension the LOTTO. We have a lot of work to do with our governance model.

  12. How many days has Mia spent in Barbados during the past 5+ years. We should amend the constitution to say
if a parliamentarian is out of the country more than x days in a term we will
    (1) kick them out of the office,
    (2) throw them out of the country
    (3) seize their frequent flier miles and
    (4) take away their microphone (that would really scare her)

    All in favor say ‘Aye’

  13. David and NorthernObserver. Although I understand the purpose and importance of the PAC, I’m a bit concerned about the ‘functionality of its construct.’ In other words, is the committee with the LOTO as its chairman, rather than an independent third party, useful, effective and has the ability to objectively perform its intended functions? I’m sure you’re aware examining the AudGen reports is the PAC’s primary duty. Assume, for example, the DEMS won the next general elections and Mottley becomes OL and PAC chair. We essentially have a situation where the OL, as PAC chair, presiding over investigations of financial improprieties that occurred under her watch as PM. Also bear in mind, the financials for several SOEs are not current, a situation ‘spanning’ successive BLP & DLP administrations.

  14. As an ‘independent third party,’ Atherley had the ability to ‘pick and choose’ which reports he wanted to examine. Thorne is in a unique position, in that he became OL in the middle of a parliamentary term, in a situation where previously there wasn’t an OL.

  15. @Artax

As stated above we have some governance issues that hopefully will be addressed in the new Constitution. A big issue for us is that we don’t have numbers across parties to support well functioning working committees of parliament.

  16. Let’s be fair. Frequent travel by PMs has been politicised by both administrations. ALL PMs have been accused of accumulating ‘frequent flier miles.’ I find it hard to believe presidents or prime ministers ‘get up every day looking for some country to go to’ without reason or invitation. The problem is, we look at the world ‘from 8am to 4pm,’ Barbados time. Ignoring the fact its morning in some countries and business is being transacted, while we are sleeping and dreaming. We’re simply politicising a ‘non issue.’

  17. William Skinner Avatar
    William Skinner

We have collectively stroked the fires of adversarial politics and that’s why we are now reaping the whirlwind because the country looks far different than it looked a mere twenty years ago.
We have already accepted that a considerable portion of the electorate doesn’t care if it all goes astray once their party is in power. Being objective should not be transactional.
We have collectively encouraged intellectual and political hypocrisy at every turn.
We agree with @ David that we have a lot of work to do but in all reality , we cannot succeed if we can only see clearly, when it’s politically convenient .
That’s a challenge that we face and quite frankly, it may be more difficult than we want to believe.

  18. Thorne represents the worst in politics a chancer and an empty suit

  19. NorthernObserver Avatar
    NorthernObserver

    @Artax
    You are correct.
Add in the preponderance of lawyers, who are well versed in the fine art of delay, and without anything for the AudGen to audit, by the time anything surfaces most involved will have retired or worse.
We may forget, the system is interdependent. You cannot have a PAC if the Auditor General has nothing to audit. Without Annual financials there is no audit. And around it goes.
The question is, do you believe the story. Do we think that 6 years in the IMF is still working with unaudited reports? Credit agencies like Fitch et al SELL their information/opinions. Do we think they rely on guesstimates and forecasts?
Some would like us to believe there is a shortage of trained individuals.
I think we have a shortage of Ministers who are willing to share the reports they have.
As I have reminded all repeatedly, the Reports have THREE components, the financials are but ONE. Management decisions have still been made, and/or Board decisions and CAN BE reported. The activities which took place, took place. And can be reported. The public are being taken for a joyride on a Merry-go-Round….and seemingly enjoying every minute.

“Between the #PoLIEticalZionists and the leaders of #IslamicWorld. The war must be conducted in such a way that ISLAM* (the Moslem-Arabic World) and #PoLIEticalZionism (the State of IsraHELL*) ‘MUTUALLY DESTROY EACHOTHER’…”

The #FinalParagraph of the “LANGUAGE CITED” is even more “STARK”:

“We shall unleash the *NIHILISTS* and the *ATHEISTS*, and we shall provoke a formidable “SOCIAL CATACLYSM” which in all its horror will show clearly to the nations the effect of “ABSOLUTE ATHEISM”, origin of “SAVAGERY” and of the most #BloodyTurmoil…”

“Then everywhere, the citizens, obliged to defend themselves against the world minority of revolutionaries, will “EXTERMINATE” those destroyers of civilization, and the “MULTITUDES”, disillusioned with “CHRISTIANITY”, whose “DEISTIC SPIRITS” will from that moment be without compass or direction, anxious for an ideal, but without knowing where to render its adoration, will “RECEIVE THE TRUE LIGHT” through the #UniversalManifestation of the “PURE DOCTRINE OF LUCIFER”, brought finally out in the public view. This manifestation will result from the general reactionary movement which will follow the “DESTRUCTION OF CHRISTIANITY AND ATHEISM”, both “CONQUERED” and “EXTERMINATED” at the same time…”

#ThisStuffIsBIBLICAL* in its ruminations – leaving any #LogicalThinker or #CloseReasoner to conclude the authenticity of the #ClaimsMade and how the “TIMELINE” should leave no one in doubt as to the veracity of what is “UNFOLDING DAY BY DAY”!!!

I saw you on a show recently and wish to make two points
    (1) Your face was quite different from the Rabbit I remember
    (2) Also, I hear your name mentioned on Brasstacks. On some topics, your words carry a lot of weight.
    Keep it simple Rabbit

  23. I see that you have mastered the art of dancing and spinning. Great respect.

I am going to make a wild guess, but I am willing to bet (1) that none of the past PMs have traveled as much as my favorite PM and (2) that any other Caribbean leader has HALF as many miles as her.

In addition, technology has advanced to such a stage that if she is not a major contributor, she should explore videoconferencing. Do you mean to tell me that she can rule by videoconferencing but cannot attend some meetings using the same technology.

Don’t let a fat face appearing frequently behind a microphone on a tv/phone screen fool you that something is being done or that higher-up people are listening.

  24. The0
And I am will to bet that none of the past pms or any of the other Caribbean leaders are as ‘world’ popular as ours.

Why are jealous of the pm travel schedule if she is invited to a video conference she would video I’d there need here presence then she will travel.

Man go settle the fight in ur party with the two leaders fighting over who was invited and who took a delegation to st Lucia to eat sushi
    Pick sence from that !!

  25. Likewise, ‘I’m going to take a wild guess that none of the past PMs were as ‘popular,’ both regionally and internationally, as Mottley. Nor, have they advocated for any global cause, such as climate change. She was named one of the 100 most influential people of 2022 in recognition of ‘outspoken advocacy for addressing climate change, and the recipient of a UN Foundation Global Leadership Awards honouring her as ‘Champion for Global Change,’ and citing ‘her exemplary leadership in fighting for a just, equitable and sustainable world.’ In May 2022, she became the first Barbadian to be featured on TIME magazine’s cover. In November, she was the recipient of the UN Foundation annual Global Leadership Award in recognition of her outspoken advocacy for addressing climate change, and in December, among BBC’s 100 Women’s List as one of the world’s inspiring and influential women of the year, and the Financial Times, ‘FT’s 25 most influencial women of 2022.’ She was also named on Forbes’ 2023 list and served as co-chair of the Americas Cruise Tourism Task Force, and co-chair of the Development Committee of the World Bank, from November 2020 to October 2021. She is also co-chair of WHO’s Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance. These are only a few examples. Mottley has delivered speeches on climate change at interactive forums. Perhaps she should have used Zoom or WhatsApp instead.

  26. There is no question Mottley has helped to grow the Barbados brand as well as her own in the international arena. How that translates to helping the country progress we can continue to debate. What we should never compromise on is the people’s right to hold the PM or any spender of public funds accountable.

  27. According to Blarney,100 million in tourism earnings from T20 World Cup projected.

How much will stay in overseas accounts ?

  28. Whether or not we are fond of Mottley, she has ‘made a name for herself,’ and gained global recognition for doing so since 2019. How many past and current Caribbean leaders were able to gain ‘global popularity’…… widespread recognition and acceptence on a global scale….. or members of different international organisations as Mottley?

  29. @Artax

It is fair to say only Barrow would have come close, no other.

  30. William Skinner Avatar
    William Skinner

    @ David ,
The most globally recognised leader to date, from the Caribbean ,was Comrade Fidel Castro.
In terms of global warming/climate change , while no one leader emerged as a globally recognised figure , the region has not been asleep or ignorant to the issue.
There were several progressive ideas, speeches at the international/global level by PMs such as Castro, Patterson and Sandiford , who berated the developing countries for ignoring the effects of global warming on small vulnerable economies in the Caribbean. Indeed , Comrade Castro was making similar speeches and taking identical stands to Mottley, regarding reimbursing the region for damage caused by its effects.
So while it’s definitely true to say that PM Mottley has made a bigger and impressive personal mark on the issue, for which she has received deserved praise and recognition ;she is actually following the collective efforts that went before.
We daresay, she has done so exceptionally well. It’s also true to say that she is probably the most popular PM, in the region at the moment.

  31. William Skinner Avatar
    William Skinner

Should read : who berated the developed countries…… (not “developing)

  32. “What we should never compromise on is the people’s right to hold the PM or any spender of public funds accountable.”

    @ David

I never sought ‘to compromise the people’s right to hold politicians accountable for public funds.’

What I find interesting is the fact we sometimes allow politicians to ‘control the narrative.’

Over the years, opposition leaders have questioned and criticised the frequent travelling by PMs, only to engage in a similar activity when they eventually become PM, while justifying their reasons for doing so.

Mottley’s ‘résumé’ clearly indicates the reason why she may be invited to give speeches at or attend various international forums, for which technology such as videoconferencing may not be an appropriate means of communicating her message.

  33. ‘World popular’, what is it? How do you measure it?

Everyone reciting the tired mantra ‘world popular’. Meanwhile, the administration fumbles, bumbles, mismanages the island and generates new and brilliant scams.

Government should be much more than a popularity contest. Let’s talk about transparency and integrity; let’s fight against corruption and let the courts distribute justice. Cut out the popularity contest nonsense.

Meanwhile intelligent folks take their eyes off the ball and fall for slick PR pieces. She has acquired some ‘soft awards, made a name for herself and the island continues its death spiral.

Everyone reciting the tired mantra ‘world popular’. Though you know she isn’t, some of you all would vote for her as ‘Miss World’

  34. Mia is popular, but here nobody remembers why or cannot connect the dots.

    2020 flashback
When George Floyd was murdered and #Blacklivesmatter were protesting worldwide, it opened a portal in the space time continuum in order to fuse blacks lives together as part of humanity, in opposition and contrast to white supremacy racism mindsets. Mia stepped into the void when this thinking changed and was useful in visualizing and understanding relativistic effects of another dimension such as how different observers perceive where and when racist events occur.

  36. Whilst the pundits focus on Thorne and Yearwood, no one mentions the power drain that Mia is experiencing.

Once she was like a conductor of an orchestra at these parish speaks, but her last sets of parish outings bordered on boring; even the chosen yard fowls were lacking enthusiasm.

I can imagine operatives driving the discussion of the Thorne/Yearwood situation whilst behind the scene the BLP leadership is trying to understand and stop Mia’s power drain.

She cannot shut up and at the same time she cannot put up.

Her sweet words cannot hide her bungling administration. Mia’s touch has turn the reparation discussion into a pile of shit as the Draxes of this world are now salivating at the payout that may be coming their way.

Mia’s touch has turn the cybercrime bill into a national quagmire; Mia’s touch has failed to produce integrity legislation and gas given us the bungling of a thousand new initiatives.

Let me help the BLP consortium and tell them how to solve this problem. You have reached the stage where you have to stop messing up. The masses are saying ‘put up or shut up’ ; screw-ups do not count.

  37. I remember someone describing Mia as a Colossus. Perhaps, it was a typo and they meant colossal screw-up. It pains me to see 60-0 shrinking to nothingness. Whilst some see the DLP as exploding, the BLP is imploding; soon all that will be left of the 60-0 is a landscape filled with failed initiatives, silly ideas and a loss of public money.

  38. Attacking Mia will not resonate because the vast majority of Barbadians still believe she is the one to lead. If an election were held tomorrow she would win going away.

  39. I do not get it. Does she get a free ride?

Do we ignore her mistakes / missteps / mishaps.

Can we just ignore the many misses of a hit or miss (mostly miss) administration?

Should mastery of the use of a microphone and accumulating frequent miles be counted as a positive in the development of our country?

If Bajans think she is the one to lead, then they must all be blind. Flying around like a chicken with it head cut-off is not leadership.

    Wake up! People, wake up

Yes, most of us are definitely blind. A fact taken advantage of by the political class.
