The region of Palestine since October 7 has entered into a terrible war. And, of course, there the flowers have withered, and the sun has disappeared because darkness has come, and the youths cannot sing, and the children cannot play carelessly in the streets, and the white doves of peace do not fly in the gloomy sky.

And who is to blame for this tragedy? Is it the fault of the Israeli people? Is it the fault of the Palestinian people? Clearly, no. Both peoples are innocent and good. Israelis are entitled to have their own state, but so are Palestinians, must have their own piece of land with state status. But the politicians, and primarily of the powerful Israeli side, in all the previous years, did not take the necessary right steps to solve this hot problem in the Middle East region, resulting in the current tragic situation.

And what are these steps? For 75 years–since 1948, when the State of Israel was established–the UN has made a decision on the creation of an independent Palestinian state and it has not been implemented. At that time, Israel occupied 52% of the area designated as “historic Palestine”, and in the remaining 48%, the borders were determined for the Palestinian state that was to be created.

And, of course, peoples all over the world are innocent and good. The people in every country overwhelmingly do not want war, they do not want killing, dead and crime. They want to live in an environment peaceful, beautiful and happy. They want peace. They want to smile every day and dream. All people in this world set goals and try to achieve them, thus giving meaning to their lives. They do not want these goals to be violently, suddenly, and abruptly interrupted, as happens when a country plunges into the throes of war. They don’t want to wallow in this horror for months or even years under any circumstances. Fathers and mothers want to see their children progress and make them proud. They don’t want to be sent to war and killed in the most gruesome way.

But who on this planet makes the wars? Of course, the huge economic powers that dominate our planet and through wars promote their interests, purposes and plans. They literally feed on wars and don’t care how many thousands or even millions die. Of course, some politicians who set, promote and try to implement extreme nationalist and conquering aspirations also have a role in the wars.

And today we see that humanity has been plunged into the madness of war. Humanity today is passing through the most critical phase of its history, as it is literally one step before the Third World War, the devastating results of which for human civilisation many of us will not live to see. And as Albert Einstein said “If there is a third World War, the fourth will became with batons”.

In any case, then, the people are the victims. They pay for the war with their blood. In the past there have been peoples who have been lured by their politicians through relentless propaganda, brainwashing and fear mongering down this pernicious and tragic path. Typical is the example of the German people who were victims of Nazism and Goebelian propaganda and thus turned into a lever for the extermination of other peoples.

And, of course, the soul and heart of every good and compassionate person is broken by the tragic events taking place today in the Middle East, but also in Ukraine and elsewhere. Any good person cannot help but weep before the hideous sight of people with severed heads, arms and legs. He can’t help but weep before the image of children disfigured and drenched in blood. He can’t help but weep with the caravans of refugees leaving their beloved land with bombs hanging over their heads. He cannot but shed tears for every person who is lost, whether he is armed or civilian, whether he is Palestinian, whether he is Israeli, whether he is Russian, whether he is Ukrainian, or of any other nationality. After all, all humans, biologically we are the same, we have come out of the same womb and have the same fate.

All people, and above all those in key positions of political power, and I want to believe that there are also sane politicians and politicians who have some political stature, we must fight to stop the merciless murderous wars, to avoid the catastrophic Third World War and to give birth to a new democratic world that will be based on cooperation, mutual respect and the peaceful coexistence of all states and peoples of the planet.

A region steeped in war and in the mud

Without sun, without joy, without flowers

Watered with bitter tears and red blood

Without carefree children, without songs.  

Corpses gruesomely strewn everywhere

Without heads, without legs, without hands

Destroyed cities that look like death lands

And in the sky the pigeons nowhere.

Caravans of refugees without clear bourne

With bombs flying in the melancholic air

They leave their beloved homeland in fear

And on the pole the flag, bloody and torn.

Dreams buried in the wounded terrain

And hearts broken into a thousand pieces

Pale faces lacerate by indescribable pain

And around the Death with his black horses.

Victims in this miserable and unfair world

They are always the innocent and good humans

Which give off a nice perfume by their soul

Either they are Israelis or Palestinians.

O Palestine, our soul is full of bitterness

For this terrible tragedy and savagery

Our planet is sinking into darkness

And in our eyes, anger and sadness.

    This tells us a few things.

    One, that this is indeed a Western war of genocide against Gaza.

    Two, that they are seeking a larger war. As the “Sampson Option”, held by the Zionists, appears more and more likely as Hamas continues to cut their asses even as the sacred to death Zionists continue to massacre women, children, sick people in their beds and old people.

    Three, that the Zionists cannot defeat Hamas and needs backup from a big brother, who nobody is frightened for them.     Four, that the West seeks, for themselves, a defence from coming within the aims of the Zionists’ up to 400 nuclear weapons should a loss to Hamas becomes more likely and the Sampson Option is implemented by a defeated nation of mad men and women.

    Tanzanian student taken hostage by Hamas confirmed dead

    The Tanzanian government has confirmed the death of a student taken hostage in the Hamas attack on Israel.

    Clemence Felix Mtenga, 22, was one of two Tanzanians taken by the group on 7 October. It is unclear how he died.

    The country’s foreign ministry said it was in touch with Israel over the other Tanzanian hostage, Joshua Mollel.

    More than 230 hostages were taken in the assault by Hamas, and at least 1,200 people killed.

    Israel says the hostages – which were taken from Israel to the Gaza Strip – come from 25 countries, including one South African who is yet to be identified.

    Approximately 260 Tanzanians study agriculture in Israel, and both Mr Mtenga and Mr Mollel had been in the country as part of an agricultural internship programme, Israel’s foreign ministry said on X.

    The pair had only landed in Israel in September, and were due to study there for 11 months.

    Mr Mtenga had been living on Kibbutz Nir Oz and working at a dairy farm in the afternoons, a friend and fellow student told the BBC.

    When news of his kidnapping broke last month, his sister said his whole family were worried about him, but remained hopeful he would be rescued.

    She said: “He should be courageous where he is, know that we love him and that we pray for him day and night, hoping that he will be back soon.”

    Tanzania’s foreign ministry said Mr Mtenga’s family had been informed, and that officials were liaising with the Israeli government to send his body home.

    Mr Mollel’s situation is currently unclear.

    Before it was confirmed that he had been taken hostage, his father told the BBC he could not eat or sleep because he was desperate to know what had happened to him.

    The last words he said to his son before he disappeared were: “Be on your best behaviour because you’re somewhere new, and make the most of the internship you’re there to do.”

      All hands were on deck Monday evening as several people, including emergency officials, rescued an elderly man who fell into a ditch in Bridgetown.

      However, had it not been for the vigilance and quick thinking of St George Secondary School students Christian Whitehall, 13, and Shakayla Riley-Sealy, 12, the situation could have been much worse for the 77-year-old man who had to be pulled from the trench at the corner of Hart Street.

      Yesterday, the two students were praised for their efforts during a short presentation at the Constant, St George school, which included Chief Fire Officer Errol Maynard.

      During an interview with the Saturday Sun, they recalled crossing the street located between City Centre Mall and St Mary’s Anglican Church when they noticed the elderly man hit his head and fall.

      Although the task was difficult, especially as they were travelling with an umbrella, they did their best to try to help him.

      “Shakayla took the umbrella while I tried to lift the gentleman, but he was too heavy for me to lift, so Shakayla put the umbrella down and both of us tried lifting him together, but we could not get him out of the ditch,” Christian said.

      Got involved

      Shakayla said as they struggled to get him off the ground, men who were in a “water truck” drove by and got involved. Moments later, fire chief Maynard, who was also travelling in the area, noticed the ordeal.

      “While we were there helping the man, a gentleman stopped and he said he was the fire chief. He asked us what happened and we told him. When the man came out of the ditch, assisted by the three men, we realised he was bleeding because he stuck his head against the pole.

      “The fire chief asked if anyone had tissue [and] then handed the old man tissue and told him to apply pressure to the cut . . . . The old man was dirty from falling into the ditch, so Christian dusted him off,” Shakayla said.

      Maynard, who was on his way home, said he had to get involved when he noticed their efforts. “It was the fact that everybody passed and these two little children were trying to get him out and they stayed there for the whole duration.”

      He said although the man, who he identified as Michael Herman, was in good spirits, he was proud that the children assisted.

      “The hole wasn’t deep but because of how he fell, he was on his side and down inside the hole, so he couldn’t have moved from the position by himself.

      “Because of the laceration to his forehead and the fact that he was 77 years old, with head trauma, I felt that he should have gotten evaluated. However, he was in good spirits even when the police and the ambulance came,” Maynard said.

      The fire chief said it was important to highlight the efforts of the youth who he thanked for doing a great job.

      “We speak about the negatives about children and the schools, but I also want us to highlight the kindness of these children. It was brave of them,” he added.

      Meanwhile, at the school, the children were supported by their parents and guardians.

      Chakera Riley said she was proud of her daughter and Christine Austin said the same of her “nephew”.

      Riley said she had previously expressed her concerns about Shakayla, who often arrived home late, but that evening she could not be upset.

      “She told me, ‘Mummy, I have a reason why I got home late this evening’ and I told her, ‘You made me very proud’,” Riley said.

      Austin, who is looking after Christian since his mother is working overseas, said he was caring by nature.

      “He is a very nice person and he likes to help. If he gets on the bus and an old lady gets on, he gets up and he gives the seat.

      “I had an accident a couple of years ago and my back hurts me, and every night he says, ‘Aunty, where the thing to rub your back?’ and he would get it and rub my back. He would say, ‘You want a glass of water?’ and he’d get it for me because he is a very loving child,” Austin said.

    • 400 march against siege on Gaza

      “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!” rang the cries throughout the streets of Bridgetown yesterday afternoon.

      Four hundred protesters marched in solidarity with Palestine, unified in a call to the end of Israel’s siege on Gaza.

      The march, led by the Caribbean Against Apartheid in Palestine (CAAP) saw people of all ages raise their placards. Some were clad in the colours of the state of Palestine while others waved the flags of the East Jerusalem nation.

      Shouting a cry which has become common among Pro-Palestine supporters around a world – “In our millions, and our billions, we are all Palestinians!” the protesters marched throughout The City declaring their stance against the Israeli attacks on Gaza where the death toll has risen to 12 000 as of Friday.

      “Twelve thousand souls murdered, 12 000 souls, that’s the equivalent to bombing half the secondary schools in Barbados with all their students and employees trapped inside,” said an impassioned Saudah Mohamad.

      With a microphone in hand, Mohamad led the crowd of protesters in rallying cries throughout the march which began at the British High Commission on Lower Collymore Rock, St Michael and proceeded through The City before arriving at Independence Square.

      Addressing the crowd of protesters at Independence Square, Mohamad implored Barbadians to remember there are no borders when it comes to fighting for justice and solidarity for oppressed people.

      “I am a mother and I am a Muslim, and I am compelled to speak not only because of my faith but also because our proud nation knows when a doctrine of hate resides over a nation and occupies its people.

      “We will not stand by as another genocide, another Apartheid runs amok on this beautiful planet, never again in our name, never again in the name of the safety or security of one race over another,” she said.

      Mohammed, a Palestinian who wished not to reveal his surname, said he has lost count of the family members that died in attacks on Gaza throughout the years.

      He drew a comparison to other moments in history, where silence met the cries of other countries and people under siege.

      “Let’s say we give them the benefit of the doubt, that they didn’t have iPhones, they didn’t have TikTok, they didn’t have Instagram, they were watching the wrong news maybe they didn’t know how to do their research, but what is the excuse now when we have all of that,” he said.

      It’s amazing how many conflicts in the world are rooted in ethnic and religious identities. The irony is that both of these identities are incidental rather than essential. The only essential identity we have is that of being human.

      Identity is a perilous swamp. We are all an assortment of identities: nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, language, colour, class, and so on. Those that predominate may not be of our own choosing but depend rather on social circumstances. I happen to be a Catholic, but it’s not a priority identity. I suspect, however, that if I lived in Northern Ireland, it might be. I am a Bajan man who happens to be white. The latter is not of my choosing but, born and raised in Barbados, it thrusts itself on me.

      The Nigerian novelist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who lives part of the time in the United States, observed that when she is in the US she is identified as black (colour); when she is in Africa outside of her homeland, as Nigerian (nationality); and when she is in Nigeria, as an Igbo (ethnicity), the ethnic group (some 40 million) to which she belongs. She identifies herself as a feminist and a human being.

      I often ask myself why Afro-centrists in the Americas so often reduce a vast continent of many different civilisations, nationalities, ethnicities, languages, and cultures to one identity: colour.

      Oh, historically, I understand why. I just don’t fathom the blind persistence over time.

      The conflict raging in Palestine is about both religion and ethnicity.

      If you read the many analyses of that conflict – and I’m not talking about the crap that circulates on social media – you will notice this is a fight not only over land, security, and freedom, but also, perhaps more importantly, over clashing narratives of identity.

      Right of belonging

      Like many other conflicts, it’s about the right of belonging.

      A friend of mine told me it was the Jews who were the “interlopers” in Palestine, because there were centuries of disruption between the Jews and their ancestral homeland. While that may be true, where should the Jews go after they are expelled from Palestine? To Christian Europe, where for centuries they were subject to discrimination, persecution, and slaughter, culminating in the Nazi Holocaust, based on the incessant propaganda that the Jews were Christ-killers? What do you think created this passionate desire to return to an ancestral homeland?

      But then, the Zionist movement, aided by European imperialists, who were only too glad to get rid of the Jews, displaced over 700 000 Palestinians from their homes in 1948 in the course of establishing a Jewish homeland in the state of Israel. The call for a free Palestine “from the river to the sea” began as a slogan calling for all the land to be returned to the Palestinians.

      But it soon also came to represent the utopian vision of a secular democratic state of Jews and Arabs with equality for all. This would indeed be an ideal solution, since archeologically and genetically they are one and the same people and both belong in Palestine. But, unfortunately there has been too much blood shed to make this a reality. Besides, the state of Israel as a homeland for the Jews exists.

      A two-state solution is the best we can hope for. There can be no peace, security or justice until the Palestinians have a state of their own. But for that to happen, Netanyahu and his murderous racist colleagues in the coalition government have to go.

      Religion is often the hardest identity to escape from.

      An anecdote illustrates this. A Jew is stranded for several years on a desert island. When he is eventually found, his rescuers ask him why he has built three structures. He replied, ‘this one is my house, this is the synagogue I go to, and this is the synagogue I do NOT go to”.

      But it goes beyond Judaism. Another anecdote. A young Hindu boy asks his grandfather to tell him about Hinduism. His grandfather tells him he’s too young to understand and to come back a few years later. The boy, now eighteen, goes back and asks his grandfather again, and adds, “but I must tell you I no longer believe in any gods at all”. The grandfather says, “well, there you have it, my boy.

      You belong to the atheistic branch of Hinduism”.

      The latest edition of The Economist magazine has an article proclaiming that Donald Trump is the greatest threat to the world in 2024. Again, religion and ethnicity are the basis of that threat. If he should win the 2024 presidential election (he won’t) we would see the US under a white christian nationalist movement, akin to what Hitler and the Nazis wanted to spread across the globe.

      Incidentally, why are the Mediterranean Sea and the Caribbean Sea two of the greatest sites of ethnic genocide, conflict and tension, and, yet, the greatest sources of human creativity? Ah . . . here’s a PhD thesis for someone.

    They are no longer under the sway of HAMAS who wanted them as human shields.

    The Arabs in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon are being punished by God.

    There is nothing to be done about it by mere mortals.

    God will make it swift.

    The times suggest he is on a timetable.

    Listen to the Rugby Christadelphian I posted towards the end, and you will see how he interprets the Bible to explain specifically what is going on.

    How did they offend God?

    They killed God’s chosen and seek to kill more.

    So many have tried and so many have been punished by God as a result and yet these two sets of people did not learn.

    God is fair.

    He also punishes His chosen when they break the Covenant entered into all those years ago. If they disobey Him and renege on what they agreed, they get punished, simple.

    Like the two groups their punishment too is also specified.

    The record speaks for itself.

    God is the final arbiter on justice and injustice where humanity is concerned.

    It is all written down and anyone can read it.

  45. Looks like the Israelis had hacked into the hospital surveillance cameras and had the date and time stamped footage of the HAMAS terrorists returning with their hostages on October 7.

    Difficult to imagine HAMAS would have left the camera footage accessible to the Israelis to incriminate themselves.

    The Israelis probably knew HAMAS was operating from the Hospital and made it a priority target.

    Not surprisingly, the bodies of some hostages were found near the hospital.

    The question that everybody’s asking is, “How come so many people all around the world are rising up to destroy this country and the people of Israel for no apparent reason ever since dawn of history?”

    I believe that the answer is not anywhere else but in the Bible itself. In the Book of Psalms, Psalm 83 is giving, in my opinion, the answer for all of these questions. The Bible says in Psalm 83, “Do not keep silent, O God. Do not hold Your peace. And do not be still, O God. For behold, Your enemies make a tumult. And those who hate You, have lifted up their head.” The enemies of God and those who hate God are up to do something, yet they cannot fight the living God, the God of Israel.

    “Therefore, they have taken crafty counsel against Your people. And consulted together against Your sheltered ones. And they have said, ‘Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more.’”

    And so we can see that the battle is between the enemies of God and those who hate God. And in their attempt to fight God, they come up against His people, His sheltered ones, Israel. And their obvious goal is to cut the name of Israel off so it’ll be remembered no more.

    The prayer of Asaph in Psalm 83 reminds us that there is “nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastics 1:9). Satan is always opposing what God is doing for, and through, His people. Whether it’s Israel or the church, the enemy roams like a roaring lion seeking to devour the people of God.

    Psalm 2:1-5
    Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, “Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.” He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The LORD shall hold them in derision. Then He shall speak to them in His wrath,
    And distress them in His deep displeasure.

    The current war in Israel is the age-old rejection of the Lord and His anointed in an effort to break the bonds of God’s authority and cast away any obligation to Him.

    Psalm 83:4-5
    They have said, “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more.” For they have consulted together with one consent; they form a confederacy against You.

    What the Psalmist wrote in Psalm 2 and Asaph prayed in Psalm 83 are what we are seeing today. Satan is trying to incite people against Israel to cut them off from being a nation, because God said through Amos that when He brought them back from the nations to which He scattered them, they would never be uprooted again (Amos 9:14-15).

    The One who sits in the heavens laughs at their efforts against Him and His Anointed. His Anointed is Jesus, the Holy One of Israel, the Savior of the world, the King of kings and Lord of lords, the Son of David, the bright and morning Star!

    We are watching what is very likely the final preparations for Satan’s hostile takeover of the world. His “man of sin, the son of perdition” is most probably waiting in the wings for his short-lived opportunity to rule the world. We could also be seeing the stage set for the Ezekiel war as animosity towards the Jews escalates. After all, Satan is an opportunist and is behind the mentality that will cause this coalition to have the boldness and justification, in their minds, to invade Israel.

    As our hearts break for the nation of Israel, as well as for this messed up and mixed up world, we have to remember that we know the end of the story. We know Israel will not be uprooted. We know there will not be a two-state solution. We know Russia, Turkey, Iran, Libya, and Sudan will be soundly defeated when they conspire together against the Lord and His Anointed. God will not be silent about His chosen people and the land He gave them by unconditional and eternal covenant.

    We also know this:

    1 Thessalonians 5:9
    For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

    We are nearing the end of the generation that saw the regathering of God’s chosen people into their national homeland. Within that generation is the Time of Jacob’s trouble, also known as the 70th week of Daniel and the Great Tribulation. This is a time of God’s global wrath, which we, as born again Christians, do not have an appointment with.

    Hosea 5:15
    “I will return again to My place till they acknowledge their offense. Then they will seek My face; in their affliction they will earnestly seek Me.”

    The events we are watching unfold today in relation to Israel are a glimpse of the rampant antisemitism that will be dominant in the Tribulation. Yet this time of affliction will lead the surviving one-third of the Jews to finally see Jesus of Nazareth as the Holy One of Israel, their Messiah.

    Psalms 122:6
    Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May they prosper who love you.”

    Keep praying for Jerusalem and the Jews to come to know the only source of true peace, the Prince of Peace, Jesus of Nazareth, who is Christ the Lord.

  95. I suspect a truce will be called when HAMAS surrenders and releases the hostages, not before.

    Israel’s first goal is the dismantling of HAMAS.

    It’s second goal is to free the hostages.

    I doubt Israel will agree a ceasefire when HAMAS still has capability to inflict harm.

    So, what happens if Israel does not agree to a ceasefire?

    HAMAS kills the hostages, destroys its worldwide image and gets the kabosh from Israel.

    That’s the end for them.

    There is however room for a miracle, perhaps a change of heart of HAMAS and an acceptance of the consequences for their brutalities.

    All in the tunnels are like rats waiting to be exterminated and knowing the end is in sight for them.
