Code.org responds to questions around controversial test in Barbados

On October 5th, Barbados Today published an article about a controversial computer science test held in Barbados. 

The original article, and subsequent Oct 6 articles mentioned Code.org, the Ministry of Education, Technological & Vocational Training, and the Inter-American Development Bank, (see here, here and here). I contacted Code.org on October 5 and asked the following questions:

Today (Oct 6), I received the following reply from Code.org:

As per BT’s initial Oct 5 and 6th articles, and Code.org’s Oct 6th reply to my queries (and the IDB’s Oct 6th statement and apology, and The Ministry’s response and apology), it seems – to me at least – that Code.org was not involved.

    But yes indeed it is harder to prosecute when both parties are younger than 16. However if there was ANY coercion, bullying or force used I would prosecute. Otherwise

    I would consult with the parents.

    ORDER BOTH CHILDREN into counseling, telling them that they are not ready for the CONSEQUENCES of early sexual activity including not ready for abortion not ready for parenthood. not ready for STI’s, not ready for the emotional pain that relationship breakdown often causes. Sometimes very young people have no idea of such consequences. They think being a mum or dad is like minding a pretty little dolly. They are completely unaware that parenting is BRUTAL LONG TERM HARD LABOR. Actually for the girls labor is also brutal hard labor. Lolll!!!I know. Been there. Done that. Hurts like HELL. Glad that I did not have to do it 21 times like a woman in the village next to mine. Tell the children this.

    Transfer them at separate schools.

    Sometimes children truly do not understand.

    BC that is Before Covid 2 young women accompanied a woman 10 years older to the hospital where the older woman was to give birth. Both young women were 17+ but not yet 18. They both anticipated being at the hospital for a couple of hours. Got bored, Went into town for lunch. Came back hours later and were surprised that birth had not yet taken place, The older woman was in labor for 20+ hours before the healthy child was born. Both young women had gone to what we call a “good school” a school which has produced multiple prime ministers, a governor general or two, a bishop or 2, many, many cabinet ministers, central bank governer etc. But these young women did not know that an ordinary healthy labor can take up to 24 hours of more.

    And can hurt like hell.

    I mean who teaches about labor in schools?

    P.S> Neither has had any children yet. Maybe traumatized by the knowledge of 20 or more hours of pain and/or discomfort. Lol!

    Maybe we can have the sexually adventurous youth booth male and female volunteer on a labor ward for a week or two. Once they have witnessed a a few dozen births sex won’t seem like such an adventure.

    Or maybe they will be thrilled to become midwives or obstetricians. Either way a positive outcome.

    One can capture names to affirm operational logistics WITHOUT any link to the actual survey taken.

    If what you write is actually what happened then that was totally lacking in professional integrity…. How could that be was approved by a Minister and the PM!

    This is making absolutely no sense ! I dun wid this foolishness.

    I agree that’s the “best way’ to proceed.

    To say children were ‘MALICIOUSLY TRAUMATIZE’ by a questionnaire that DID NOT FOCUS SPECIFICALLY on SEXUALITY, is an attempt at ‘over exaggeration’…… yuh know, being melodramatic….. purposely becoming overemotional to sensationalized the issue.

    Do you realize many children in Barbados are sexually active from age 10, and in some cases as early as 8 years old?
    And, we pretend those types of activities do not occur in Barbados.
    Parents would be surprised at the types of behaviours/activities their so called ‘innocent’ boys and girls engage in, in the toilet or classroom, on the pasture, at the back of ZRs and mini-buses etc, as evidenced by numerous videos circulating via Twitter and WhatsApp.

    Let me be CLEAR, cause yuh know you…… I’m NOT, in any way suggesting ALL school children ARE INVOLVED in those activities.

    I remember when I was in class 3A at St. Stephen’s Primary, only ONE female student had already developed breasts.
    And, to 10 year old children, that seemed odd, as we were accustomed seeing adults with ‘bubbies.’
    Nowadays, children are beginning maturity at an early age.

    That is a profiling questionnaire cleverly designed to profile students and if they answer certain questions that indicate child abuse, crime or other illegal activities, you can be sure that will be reported to the authorities whether they be school, police, child care board or otherwise for further investigation.

    Asking for a birth date and name allows them to uniquely identify each student completing the questionnaire, trace who the parents or guardians are, profile and take further action if it is warranted.

    Questions 158 onward looks like the original and true student assessment for the project. Questions 1 – 157 which are all profiling questions where purposely added before the true assessment questions to ensure they got all their profiling questions answered.

    Actually the more pertinent question is – do we have the financial capacity and competence to avoid signing on to lending agreements with international agencies like Iadb and others that will come with conditions. If we want to borrow then there are consequences.

    I did NOT say that any leaks of children’s responses happened. I said that it CAN happen. Just this week a woman who complained that she and her husband were car jacked by an armed robber, complained that within hours or days her statement to the police with her name, gender and address appeared on social media. So now the alleged armed criminals knows where she lives. She of course is unlikely to know who the alleged criminal or where HE lives.

    Sadly leaks DO happen.

    I LOVED LABOUR WARD WORK ESPECIALLY SUTURING EPISIOTOMIES AND PUDENDA TORN IN THE PROCESS.

    As a parent and grandparent who has traveled alone, with my children, and now with grandchild almost exclusively on ZR’s [2 different routes to get to work] since February 1999 I can truthfully say that I have NEVER witnessed this. Have YOU travelled on ZR’s for 23 years?

    I know that this “fact” was bruited about by a journalist whose nickname is “Something Doggie” said journalist who mostly traveled in a “big ride”

    In 23 years of almost daily travel on ZR’s on I have NEVER witnessed ANY phooping on the vans. and I traveled on 2 of what are widely regarded on the worse routes.

    Almost daily because I used the ZR’s to go to work 5 days per week, to go shopping or to take my children to the library, academic lessons and swimming lessons on Saturdays and to church on Sundays.

    I put it to you that no 8 year old boy in Barbados can get and sustain an erection to permit him to have sexual intercourse. I put it to you that it is extremely unusual for Bajan girls to have their first periods by age 8. So if a girls ovaries have not matured enough to produce a menstrual period where is this alleged sexual desire coming from? You understand that sexual desire is driven by hormones right? Which is why 20 year old men and women will seek out sex, but typically 8 year old boys and girls and 100 year old men and women do not.

    I do frequently catch public transport but I don’t often catch during school time and my common route does not have lots of school children and I can handle the loud music which is nowhere near as loud as it used to be in the 80’s and 90’s before the regulation changed from ZMs to ZRs and huge amps had to get removed and colourful paint jobs replace with the white and maroon.

    Physical maturity is NOT legal maturity.
    Physical maturity is NOT financial maturity

    My grand was 3 inches taller than me by age 10, but is still needs a night light, still afraid to light my gas oven, still afraid to stay at home alone. Is not anywhere ready to be a good employee to anybody.
    Is not ready to start a business.
    Still needs somebody to do laundry, iron school uniforms. Drive or walk them to school.
    Still needs parents to say “bathe” “do your homework” “go to bed” “wake up”
    Still can’t sign a hire purchase to buy $300 dollar crib from Courts.
    Still can’t walk into Cave Shepard to buy a stroller.
    Can’t “trust” from the corner shop
    Can’t “trust” baby clothes from the itinerant vendor.
    No person under the age of 16 can consent to their own medical treatment.
    Still can’t sign a home rental contract.
    No person under the age of 16 can register the birth of their own child.
    Is not anywhere near being ready to be a parent to anybody. Would you have benefitted from having 12 year old parents?

    So what “maturity” you talking ’bout.

    Bubbies on a child still makes that person neurologically, legally, emotionally and financially a CHILD.

    I am going by what more than one child WHO ACTUALLY TOOK THE TEST, that we KNEW NOTHING ABOUT until yesterday, said…..along with what some parents said….i never listen to nasty lying politicians…

    I was PURPOSELY CAREFUL to INCLUDE the sentence, “IN SOME CASES ” in my comments, which you COMPLETELY IGNORED, “to put it to (me) that NO 8 year old boy couldn’t do this, or NO 8 year old girl couldn’t do that.”

    RE: “This is NOT sexually active. This is sexual assauot or RAPE. Please call it by its right name.”

    I agree any person having forceful or consensual sexual intercourse with a child under the age of consent, commits the offence of statutory rape, as outlined in Barbados’ Sexual Offences Act.
    However, this doesn’t mean the child is NOT SEXUALLY ACTIVE.

    But, are you aware if it can be proven that the person who committed the offence, honestly believed the child was older, then that person is not guilty of an offence?

    I know of a case involving a minor who was at the time attending a primary school in a rural Christ Church district, that was lured into abduction from the school by an adult male, under the guise he was a police officer.
    He sexually molested the girl, stabbed her and left her for dead, with the knife’s blade broken off in her body.
    A girl was caught performing fellatio (oral sex) on a boy, in the bathroom of a certain primary school. When questioned, she said she saw her mother performing the act on her father.
    And, this is not an isolated case.
    I could cite SEVERAL sexual offences cases involving primary school pupils under 10 years of age.
    You would cringe at some of the experiences of children in the children’s ward at the Psychiatric Hospital.

    But, what IRRITATES me with people such as YOU, in this forum, is that many of you have never investigated any matter, interacted with victims or far less written up a charge sheet….

    …… but, you sit in the comfort of your homes in the ‘heights and terraces,’ in front your expensive computers and come to BU believing you’re EXPERTS IN EVERY SHIITE……

    …… while completely oblivious to what’s going on in the ghetto.
