Code.org responds to questions around controversial test in Barbados

On October 5th, Barbados Today published an article about a controversial computer science test held in Barbados. 

The original article, and subsequent Oct 6 articles mentioned Code.org, the Ministry of Education, Technological & Vocational Training, and the Inter-American Development Bank, (see here, here and here). I contacted Code.org on October 5 and asked the following questions:

Today (Oct 6), I received the following reply from Code.org:

As per BT’s initial Oct 5 and 6th articles, and Code.org’s Oct 6th reply to my queries (and the IDB’s Oct 6th statement and apology, and The Ministry’s response and apology), it seems – to me at least – that Code.org was not involved.

    THIS WAS NOT AN EXAM OR A TEST WHERE EXTRA CONCENTRATION WAS NEEDED
    AND EVEN SO, IT OUGHT TO BE SAID AND TAUGHT THAT IN ALL MCQ TYPE EXAMS (AS THIS WAS MOST LIKELY HOW THIS SURVEY WAS PRESENTED) THAT THE ANSWERS ARE ALL ON THE EXAM SHEET, BECAUSE AN MCQ TEST IS TRULY AS I WAS PROPERLY TAUGHT, AND TEACH (AND THE WAY I HAVE SET EXAMS FOR THE LAST 25 YEARS) IS PRIMARILY A TEST OF RECOGNITION RATHER THAN A TEST OF RECALL..

    LET THE BRIMBLING AND BRAYING CONTINUE
    BRING MORE MIRTH IN THOUGHTLESS RUBBISH

    AN IMPROPERLY PERUSED SURVEY WAS INAPPROPRIATELY ADMINISTERED TO YOUNG SCHOOL CHILDREN AS HAS BEEN THE NORM SINCE 1962.

    I RECALL WE WENT TO SCHOOL ONE DAY IN EARLY 62– I WAS THEN A 9 YEAR OLD PUPIL AT BOYS FOUNDATION AND WE WERE GIVEN TESTS FOR WHICH WE HAD NOT BEEN PREPARED. THIS WAS THE FIRST RENDERING OF THE COMMON ENTRANCE EXAM, WHICH WAS THEN GIVEN IN TWO PARTS— THE FIRST PART WAS CALLED THEN THE SCREENING TEST.

    TESTS AND SURVEYS ARE STILL OFFERED IN MUCH THE SAME WAY TODAY—-AS WAS THE CASE THIS WEEK TO AN UNPREPARED, CAPTIVE SET OF CHILDREN, WHO WERE ABLE TO ARTICULATE TO THEIR PARENTS THEIR HORROR OR DISGUST AT QUESTIONS THAT THEY WERE ASKED.

    YOU HAVE THE BU PRIME JACKASS DPD CLAIMING THAT THIS WAS OK BECAUSE IT WAS ONLY SEEKING INFORMATION ABOUT POSSIBLE ISSUES OCCURING IN THE SOCIETY ABOUT WHICH WE SHOULD BE AWARE, AND ABOUT WHICH WE SHOULD BE TALKING.

    THIS MORON DID NOT THINK —-AS IS THE CASE NOW IN THE USA— THAT THE PARENTS OF THE CHILDREN OUGHT TO HAVE A SAY IN THE CONTENT OF THE QUESTIONS ASKED, AND THE AUTHORITIES EITHER DID NOT CARE, AS THEY OUGHT TO HAVE DONE AS TO THE LIKELY EMOTIONAL OR PSYCHOTIC OR OTHER SEQUAELAE.

    BUT THAT SEEMS TO BE THE WAY OF THE WORLD TODAY ESPECIALLY IN PRACTICES AND PROCEDURES PURVEYED BY THE CORRUPT, CONNIVING SO CALLED DEVELOPED WORLD .

    @WARU “for 11 and 12 year olds,”

    Some of the children who took this test were born on August 31st, 2011, so on Monday 3rd October 2022 those children were only 33 DAYS old from being 10 years old and some 364 days AWAY from being 12 years old. Some of these children will complete first form and still not be 12 years old.

    In case the foreigners do not know the age of sexual consent in Barbados is 16/SIXTEEN years old.

    To have any type of sexually activity with a person younger than that is a serious CRIMINAL offence.

    @David, so what exactly is providing the survey to parents NOW, going to achieve.!

    WHY the apparent massive ‘woe are us’ reaction to a very relevant psychological survey … didn’t they realize the issues it would have caused from their first set of meetings???

    This is a DISHONEST review where they are trying to shift the narrative from the real problems which in my view are a ‘legitimate’ originator of this entire project!

    Who proposed it … why did the various regional ministries embrace it… what were the underlying issues they were trying to flesh out … why were the questions parsed as they were … who decided to do it as a 2hr stint?????

    And why are we focused on supposed ‘offensive’ questions of the type that would form the basis for every child visiting a counsellor or psychologist in our modern environment?

    What exactly are we UPSET about …the questions, the time, the sexual nature of some of the queries … what exactly?

    I am quite discombobulated by the ‘anger’ on display on this matter … as the OUTLIER person I must be missing something BIG time so I’ll continue to read to see if I can understand exactly what that is!

    Computer Science/Computer programming is supposed to be the fundamental purpose.

    those who crafted those nasty questions know that only too well that children as young as 8 and 10 are adultified in these corrupt slave societies………blame the useless churches , governments and community leaders all accused as pedos at one time or another…

    i would not want any of my young relatives around any of these creeps and would advise parents to seriously consider homeschooling their children, then traitors would not have easy access to them to sell them for 40 million…

    I FIND THIS OFFENSIVE. Taking a child’s point of view I I say that I hate my family and put my name on that statement and it comes to my parents attention what do I do then?

    If I am in a situation I will come out on top. I FIND THIS OFFENSIVE. Do we want a generation where winning is everything?

    From what I been made to understand the questions were not only about sex. It seemed to be an attempt to gauge the thoughts and calibre of tomorrow’s adults based on several subjects. It seems to be more of a what are your ideals and values? Kind of a looking glass into tomorrow’s Barbados.

    Once I was driving along minding my ow business and one of my children asked “how do we know that today is Saturday”

    That one caught me off guard.

    I replied “because people have agreed that today is Saturday.” Because in truth nobody knows what was the first day or when humanity began counting and identifying the days by name. In other words there is no scientific reason why today is Friday. I also advised the smarty pants to go along with the 7+ billion people when it comes to the days of the week. Life would be much, much easier that way.

    Today could be Sunday if enough people agreed.

    It was those questions on sexuality in particular, parents have been expressing their concerns about.

    But, judging from the comments of certain individuals, you would believe ALL the questions WERE ABOUT SEX.
    And, that was one of the reasons why I DISMISSED the NONSENSE about the questionnaire being PREPARED by PEDOPHILES.

    This CLEARLY INDICATES those individuals DID NOT ACTUALLY READ the document and are perhaps only going by WHAT they read on OTHER social media platforms.

    Similarly to you, I’ll await the reasons behind the questionnaire, before jumping to any unreasonable conclusions or talk shiite about conspiracy theories.

    … isn’t the only way to see how “charges responded” and get to that remedial process to present the survey to them!

    The survey appears to be extremely detailed and intensive …thus for any Ministry official to make the excuse that they ‘requested certain questions be removed and they were not’ in a project of this extent is absolute BS! Surely things could have been modified. deleted or otherwise based on the defined plan of assessment!

    And that remains the key here the govt needs to be transparent on : What were the reasons and intent for this detailed ‘psychometric’ style assessment! And cut through all of this blather.

    As the doc or someone alluded to above: there is so much detailed surveying done daily when we send requests from our smart devices that much of the hullabaloo above appears as a ‘knee jerk’ blowing off steam or facetious play. like @SimpleSimon who wrote above that she found it offensive to ask 11 years olds in THIS modern life about:

    I love my family.
    Being kind to strangers matters to me.
    If I am in a situation I will come out on top.
    I drink alcohol without my parents permission?
    I am mean to others.

    A child under the age of 10 cannot be sexually active. Sexual activity with a person younger that 16 is sexual assault and if penetration has occurred then it is RAPE. Language is important. Time to start calling RAPE, rape.

    Sarge I was truly surprised that international civil servants such as those who work for the IADB which is located in the USA Capital of Washington, DC would use such a term as oriental. Such people ought to know that such an exonym is considered to be archaic and offensive. If they don’t know this and don’t care what else do they not know or care about? How much do they know about or care about Bajans, Jamaicans or the peoples of Belize?
