Three months after the second defeat in a general election Democratic Labour Party (DLP) members voted for Dr. Ronnie Yearwood to replace Verla Depeiza who resigned in the aftermath of what transpired. He won by a reported vote of 273 to 205.

It is surprising more of the 800+ DLP members eligible to vote were not motivated to participate yesterday. It would have sent a strong signal to the public that there is a burning desire by the party to get back on track given the herculean rebuild effort. The last contest between Guy Hewitt and Verla Depeiza attracted a 507 to 295 vote, President Yearwood has a gargantuan task ahead. David Estwick who could not command significant support from the parliamentary group after David Thompson died in office and was a bane to the party during Stuart’s tenure attracted 205 votes from DLP party members. There is a lot political pundits can unpack from the result.

The next three years will be a critical in the rebuild period of the party. The next 18 months will be crucial for Dr. Yearwood to measure his success as a politician. By taking on the DLP presidency at this juncture in its history one suspects if he is perceived to be unable to breath life into a political party currently in a comatose state -it may doom him to be a stillborn DLP politician like his predecessor. Similar to when Owen Arthur became leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) in 1993, Yearwood does not command a significant power-base in the party. Neither is he a member of parliament. Arthur was able to successfully navigate that early period because he received strong support from elders of the party. Hopefully the DLP will be able to learn from the BLP experience and avoid making unforced mistakes.

It is understandable a significant number of DLP members continue to be disillusioned, who would not be after losing at last count 61 times at the polling booth. The Freundel Stuart era is one the party will have to work hard to overcome. It will be crucial for Yearwood to display the leadership required to co-opt early support from losing candidates David Estwick and Guy Hewitt in order to present a united front to current membership and the wider public. The adage united we stand, divided we fall seems an apt reminder to all concerned. This will be crucial for the party to be perceived as making progress to members of the public.

An emerging Barbadian voter is ready for a new kind of politics. The naked partisan behaviour and empty rhetoric seen and heard from today’s politicians and old guard is on the way out. It will be hard- in many cases impossible- for dye in the wool DEMs to shift positions. Hopefully under Yearwood’s leadership enough are persuaded to shift perspectives and he is also able to attract enough NEW members to make a difference.

Until the DLP is able to make a ‘course correction’ and elusive alternative third party political options emerge the saying that in the land of the blind one eye man is king will continue to ring true. In the system of government practiced by Barbados the best results occur with a strident opposition voice IN parliament.

On behalf of the BU household the blogmaster congratulates Dr. Ronnie Yearwood for showing the courage to undertake a job that must rank high on the unwanted job scale at this time.

    Chris not running again

    by ANTOINETTE CONNELL
    antoinetteconnell@nationnews.com

    IT’S THE END of the road in active politics for one of the most firebrand platform speakers and the one-time darling of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), Chris Sinckler.
    As he exited the island last week ahead of the DLP’s extraordinary conference presidential vote and in preparation to take up the post of alternate executive director with the World Bank in Washington, Sinckler said he would no longer contest elections.
    However, he remains a member of the DLP, which he joined in 1986 and with which he progressed all the way to Minister of Finance between 2008 and 2018.
    “No, I won’t come back to politics. You should never say never but based on how I feel now – and not just now but after 2018 – I think I basically did my part as far as the political scene is concerned and you have to know when to move on.
    “I felt it was time to move on and I so did. I’m not going to be running anywhere on any platform or anything of that nature, as I’ve pretty much run my course where that is concerned,” he told the DAILY NATION.
    Sinckler was St Michael North West Member of Parliament for ten years until 2018 when he was one of the shocking upsets in that year’s General Election, in which the Barbados Labour Party swept all 30 seats. As the Minister of Finance leading up to the election, he was the face of the Government’s fiscal policies and was pilloried, especially on social media.
    “I don’t know that anything is harder than being Minister of Finance, honestly. That is an awesome responsibility, especially when you are Minister of Finance and not Prime Minister [simultaneously].
    . . because you have a programme you want to get implemented but there is a limitation on resources, so there are a lot of things you want to do but you can’t do.
    “You have to manage and it is difficult, especially in recessionary times. Even when things are good there is no neverending infinite set of resources that any minister or ministry has, so you have to be able to cut the cloth [to suit]. I don’t envy anybody that performs that role, having done it myself,” he said.
    Of that “everybody hates Chris” period, Sinckler said it was stressful but when he signed up for politics he accepted that was part of the terrain. However, his family was another matter.
    “The process in recent times tended to get a little more edgy than appreciable but that’s just how it is. I coped with it. I tried to take everything in stride but the greatest impact was on the family.”
    He explained that from his time in politics he built an exterior against the personal attacks but his family did not always cope well with them.
    “It can be tough, and when people have to go through that for a decade or two they get weary and sometimes wish that you move on. You have to take it – you have the euphoria and the depression, the peaks and the troughs, and it all part of character-building and learning.”

    You will certainly recall that, like Sinckliar, Liz Thompson was so promoted to what you rightly referred to as a global demonic organization after a blp defeat circa 2008.

    Your deeply rooted point that the duopoly is global in character might have been missed by executive brassbowls. The notion that all politics is local as made popular might therefore be made quaint in these circumstances at least.

    Is this what democracy is? What of the notion of world government as controlled by a secret cabal? And how in these circumstances can we continue with this patina about democracy when the political forces eat from the same bowl, answer to the same masters, and must so account, not to the so-called people as sovereign?

    The the people sent Sinskliar to the political wilderness but those they elected in his stead has risen him from the dead! What a game, played on fools!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    You, of all people, MUST see the contradiction in your statement.
    The PLAIN facts, as often articulated by yourself and others on this blog surely confirms that the BEST of our collective human intuition has been consistently fatally flawed.
    Even when the highest levels of genuine INTENTIONS were clearly evident, our thinking, actions and (most critically) RESULTS, have been globally disastrous. OUR NATURAL INSTINCTS ARE FLAWED.
    “There is a methodology that SEEMS right to humans, BUT the end result thereof is death….”
    Even with your unusual perception, wide knowledge, and independence of thought, you have to admit (honestly), that you are overwhelmed by the various circumstances of hopelessness that beckons…
    In Ancient Afrikan philosophy intuition is not subject to flaws. They saw it as the voice of the Creator within. The intellect is but not the intuition. What you refer to is our propensity to allow intuition to be overruled by intellect for Intuition is never wrong.
    The ancient Afrikans never located instincts with humans. To them instincts and intuition were completely different things.
    No Bushie, we’re not overwhelmed for Pachamama has the answer to all that is. One day coming soon She will ‘intercede’ and deliver a sixth extinction event to bring back ‘right order of things’
    That would be something She has done before and it avoids an irrational reliance on magical thinking so imbued here,
    We humbly beg your indulgence to disassociate with the Eurocentric and biblical narratives because it would be impossible for this writer to prove any of it ever happened, we can prove all of it as lies and is prepared to accept death instead of the mental conditioning by eponymous stories.
    Somebody somewhere will now think of this as romantic but it’s the very foundations on which all you think you know was built. Bushie come home to the Great Mother.
    ..but who cares if they don’t, pas moi.
  49. Pacha
    You are SO right about so much…. and so wrong about a BASIC reality.
    That sixth extinction is indeed imminent, and terminologies aside, we are speaking the same language.
    What you refer to as ‘instinct’, Bushie considers to be our inherent, inbuilt ‘conscience’, which (as you correctly say) is always right. (And it is always ‘right’ because it DEFINES ‘right and wrong’ for us individually.)
    Bushie uses the term ‘Instinct’ to refer to our natural collective tendency (mostly to do shiite), which (admittedly) tends to be more externally influenced than internally – so Bushie can see why you refer to this as ‘intellect’.
    ….so Bushie is on board with your thinking.
    Where you err, is in your presumption that the entity you refer to as ‘Pachamama’ is limited by human characteristics such as Afrocentric or Eurocentric dispositions…. or even sexual orientation.
    What would lead you to conclude that, while the Afrocentric truths are ancient and unique, ‘Pachamama’ (or Bushie’s BBE) would not ALSO have provided for Eurocentric, Asia-centric, and even Bajan-centric ‘truths’ to have been established – each specific to the HUMAN characteristics of the respective brass bowls, …but pointing to the single great TRUTH?
    Now while almost ALL 7 Billion BBs on Earth have chosen to depart from what you term the ‘Ancient Instincts’, with the albino-centric cultures coming to dominate the other misguided BBs, you must see that the post-ancient African inclination has ALSO been dominated by brassbowlery…and is currently no better than any other.
    So Pacha, Bushie IS at home, thanks to adoption, and can assure you that the foundations of the knowledge of TRUTH are much wider and broader and higher than any particular ancient location. No one can predict the base from which truth can be established.
