All the charts indicate a distinct upswing in the epidemic reminiscent of the changes around the period when Omicron was taking over from the Delta strain. I suspect we are now in a similar phase when the new variant Omicron BA-2 might be taking over from Omicron.

The situation is markedly different of course, Barbados experienced flooding and Grenada has not in recent weeks.

Barbados opened the floodgates to visitors from the UK knowing full well that airborne spread would ensue.
It did.
Best we can do is watch the response in the curves and learn from what we see.

The number of COVID-19 deaths has risen after two women succumbed to the viral illness.
One of them was 69 years old and passed away on Tuesday, April 5, while the other, who was 85 years old, died today, Wednesday, April 6. Both were unvaccinated.
The death toll from the virus is now 377

The pros and cons of the pandemic and and diabetes
COVID-19 has forced many Barbadians into seeking screenings and help for their noncommunicable diseases.
Dr Diane Brathwaite, clinical director at The Maria Holder Diabetes Centre For The Caribbean, said the panic which arose as the pandemic spread resulted in a wave of people coming to get checked.
“The onset of the pandemic proved a very interesting and challenging period for Barbados and us at the Maria Holder Diabetes Centre. There was a wave of prepandemic stress and anxiety with people suddenly wanting to be screened. The majority turned out to be pre-diabetic or diabetic, as well as people coming because they had diabetes but had either stopped seeking medical care, were poorly controlling their condition or had not been taking any medication.
“What has anecdotally been observed is working age people – especially men with poorly controlled conditions and sometimes, unfortunately, with advanced complications – came seeking help; persons and children with significant weight gain came seeking screening and help, and also we made new diagnoses of foot disease, foot ulceration, diabetic eye and kidney disease,” she revealed.
Screening important
While Brathwaite said they were initially glad people had turned up as it was important to get screened, the sedentary requirements of the pandemic only made things worse.
“Everyone was shut away in their homes, maybe having access to poor quality food or on the breadline per se and eating a very high-calorie, starchy, sugary diet. Well, it’s no surprise what happened when people reemerged: weight gain; higher blood sugars; for many, lapses in health care due to reduced access to primary health care; complications; new ulcers and so on.
“The biggest lesson from this is that primary health care matters and should never be interrupted. It’s true I joke everyone has become a medical expert during the pandemic and it’s great so many people are more health aware, but so much effort and energy and resources have gone into managing the pandemic, there is the need for much more local research at this time to truly understand where we are. In the meantime, we encourage people to pair their curiosity with the support of good medical care provision,” she added.
Brathwaite said the centre remained open throughout the pandemic, though they had

Barbadian teens, notably females, fell into the highest Top 10 sugar-sweetened beverage consumers worldwide. How does a little dot in the ocean do that? We need to protect our children through strong policy.
“Parents need to stop thinking we are trying to ruin their children’s lives – we are trying to save your children’s lives. Diabetes onset from a young age is devastating and is a more aggressive disease than in adults if not controlled,” she said.Source: Nation

BAMP urges Barbadians to keep taking Covid seriously

Barbadians are being told that the recent uptick of COVID-19 cases is a sharp reminder that the pandemic is far from over and they need to heed this most recent warning.
The caution comes from president of the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners (BAMP), Dr Lynda Williams, who was concerned that Barbadians were no longer taking the pandemic seriously despite the repeated warnings by Government as well as the medical fraternity. She added that news of the emergence of the BA.2 Omicron sub-variant had been known for weeks, yet it appeared not to have influenced the behaviour of many.
“I have said the same thing over and over again. The nature of the pandemic is that it waxes and wanes and therefore it is not over until it is over. You cannot just decide that since the cases are down now that it is all over, not when variants are still stirring. Anything that is more transmissible has the potential to cause more people to get sick and that increases the potential for those persons to get very ill, resulting in either morbidity or mortality as an outcome.
“So the fact that there was a variant circulating and that it was more transmissible and we had a downward trend at the end of February, did not mean that COVID was over,” Williams told the Sunday Sun.
She said while Government has relaxed the protocols significantly, BAMP is recommending that the measures are adjusted on a week by week basis, depending on how the disease is trending.
“Barbadians still have the impression that it is all because of tourists.
Right now this is being driven mainly by our interaction within the country. We do know that the BA.2 variant of Omicron is quite transmissible. We have to look at how this particular uptick goes and how long it will last because this has happened at a time when we are having some mass events coming up. We can only hope that this would have died down before we get to those mass events.”
Last week, Minister of Health Ian Gooding-Edghill disclosed that despite a lull in cases in February, the country was now going through another spike in infections, believed to be as a result of the presence of the Ba2 Omicron sub-variant. He said the positivity rate was now at 25 per cent and the R-effective rate at 1.5, while the doubling time (growth rate of the virus) was decreasing. He also tightened up on Government’s decision to maintain mask mandates, despite calls for an ease from those in the tourism sector.
By the weekend, that rate stood at 27 per cent.
Williams agreed that sticking with the mask mandate was the way to go.
“I don’t think that we are getting through to people. We have to maintain the same vigilance, the same use of the non-pharmaceutical interventions, the social distancing, mask-wearing and so on. We cannot take them away because we have a vulnerable population, and we have a health care system that can be easily overwhelmed,” she said.
“We are not getting back to lockdowns but one of the things that we have to do is look at the situation on a week by week basis in determining what measures should be kept in place and what could be rolled back. We need to normalise testing and actively survey the population to see when things are changing, and we also have to encourage people to get [vaccine] boosted.”Source: Nation

All COVID measures need to be dropped as the ones chosen were mostly useless and did very little to stop spread.
They refused to do simple logical things like define and mandate a new indoor air quality standard and mandate all symptomatic people stay home.
Now they made their billions from the sale of mostly useless vaccines and masks, they are starting to allow discussions on cheap effective mitigation measures and alternatives to take place.

I would imagine that we are getting floods in Barbados all like now.
The type of rain that is falling got to be producing floods.
Our cases are already rising although I suspect most are in the visitor population being tested to return home to Canada and America.
The Brits have pushed the levels up already.
In three or four weeks we are probably going to see an explosion among the local population.
Wish I were wrong and I could be but the signs are there.
This year could be real trouble with hurricanes as well but I will know more when next month’s temperature data in the pacific comes out!!

It is a real pity China hides its disasters from the world.
It has been having floods with millions of people affected.
Thus we are reading from about 3 months ago of floods in Henan province between 17 and 23 July last year.
Flooding of the Wenyu River which flows through Beijing took place in October 2021 but is only recently seeing the light of day.

If they had said something I could have told them to expect COVID cases to rise.
Looks like the cases are plateauing and beginning to fall.
Compared with some places in the world and because of its immense population, the cases per million are orders of magnitude smaller.
However, Zero Tolerance of COVID can’t work in floods.

Over in South Africa, cases continue to rise after the floods on 10 April 2022.
Just about 3 weeks have passed so there are still a couple of weeks before they turn the corner providing no more floods.
Some signs of slight improvement but still an upward trend.
