… Powah [power] is a funny thing. Persons we may otherwise have seen as rational and students of sound governance suddenly do the oddest of things. Isnโ€™t this the ongoing crux of the NIS? And it happens frequently in the private sector too. Despite all the protestations, did ICBL get contracts which were facilitated? What else did they get? The fourth estate has never seen fit to publicly question the Board of CBL? I know of situations where a subsidiary may begin sinking, and the Board changes like rats off a sinking ship. The big ups from the parent donโ€™t want association with a failure. But that doesnโ€™t stop the same persons who bailed from forcing their decisions upon the Board, sometimes even at the complete exclusion of the Board. Powah is a funny thingโ€ฆ

The blogmaster has been observing the strident views expressed by citizens of Barbados about whether to vaccinate. A few thousand were motivated to march during the pandemic. People have the right to behave as they like provided no laws are being broken. Local newsfeeds both traditional and and social media continue to be choked daily with news about Covid 19. There is so much information being shared that it is thought to be contributing to Covid 19 fatigue globally.

The environment is perfect for opposition forces to put ‘licks’ in the government to win favour with a general election due in 2023, the latest. It is the idealist who believes political forces in any country will ever see the benefit of working together in the interest of the public if there is political capital to be gained.

Does it make intelligent Barbadians ponder why political parties and agents are motivated to be โ€™vocalโ€™ about selected issues? In recent months there has been some noise made about the decision by the Mia Mottley government to replace the Queen of England (soon to be King) with a local daughter of the soil. The anecdotal feedback from a cross section of locals continues to expose a lack of understanding about the workings of the government. One suspects it will take a generation of educating the general public to meet the civic awareness gap.

If there is a lack of understanding about the basic workings of government is it reasonable to expect Barbadians to be motivated to march in thousands or flood daily talk shows about governance related matters? For years the National Insurance Fund has been managed like Babsie rum shop. Under successive government the embarrassing situation exist where our most important fund is unable to produce up to date audited financial statements. Through it all the Barbados public continues to be unaware of the accurate state of the fund.

Why has the public, including the Fourth Estate not vigorously pursued the Four Seasons transaction to hold political actors accountable? This is a transaction that exposes mismanagement and corrupt behaviour of both political parties when in government supported by senior public servants. We have Mia Mottley who was contracted to do legal work for Four Seasons now prime minister and one of her Mercedes driving financial consultants Avinash Persaud, former executive chairman. Not to forget a former dead Prime Minister David Thompson who hired both of them.

The political outrage directed at Mark Maloney for failing to deliver Covid 19 vaccine is interesting if seen in the context of a player who was heavily engaged by the former DLP government. The blogmaster does not condone the obvious lack of transparency surrounding the procurement of Covid 19 vaccine. What is being asked of our gullible Fourth Estate and Public Servants whose role is to serve the public for good of country – why have you vacated your responsibility? Some of us will not be fooled by those who seek to manipulate public opinion to satisfy narrow interest.

For more than a decade no audited financial statements of the National Insurance Fund, for more than a decade the Auditor General has been highlighting issues without redress by successive governments, for more than four decades successive governments have turned a blind eye to private transportation woes in Barbados, to the point it has developed a sub culture, for decades successive governments have pursued the lazy path to managing the economy by dumping our eggs in one tourism basket, for years we have asked successive governments to revamp the education system to ensure our people are adequately equipped to sustain our competitiveness in a fast moving world, for years we have asked for a fit for purpose waste to energy solution, a judicial system promising for years to crash under its weight …

Barbadians are some of the issues mentioned not worthy of your outrage? Are you willing to march if asked for any one of the issues mentioned? We know the answer therefore do not expect anything to change.

In 2023 the blogmaster will ask Donville Inniss to start a new political party to lead us to a different place. A suggested slogan sure to win favour with the public is โ€The Return of the Donโ€.

  1. @David, Mia Mottley was one of the best Opposition Leaders Barbados have ever had. Her emotional intelligence and social intelligence are off the chart.

Sadly, Ms Depeiza seems not to understand that most great leaders are Machiavellian, have excellent grapevines, know how to work and use people, have excellent grapevines, create a herd/flock of absolute loyalist and put key persons in institutions to create obligatory loyalty.

I posit the next election turnout will be low as voters apathy continue to set in, however, the BLP will lose some seats and only the old DLP loyalist will vote, new voters will stay home due to hopelessness. We can expect some new creative innovations from the BLP pre election announcement.

Mia Mottley, like most bright and sharp leaders, must be kept in check for their egos can take them over the hill as they disarm their charges who are made into lambs.

My concern is that the academics and intelligentsia seem to be all silent and their absolute silence seems to suggest they have all compromised.

We are moving towards a republic and key instruments of good governance such as FOIA, ITAL, Contractor General, hands off the appointment of Judges and security forces……only then can we expect through accountability, transparency and good governance. Sadly, to be incredulous is bad in Barbados for deceit is rewarded as loyalty.

Political trust in Barbados is at an all time low.

Political trust in Barbados is at an all time low.

    Xxxxx
Absolutely correct Sir the most honest comment u have made towards this present govt
However I asked of u a person who engages in things Environmental
Where was your voice when govt allowed Covid ships to docked I Carlisle for months on end which has resulted in millions of damage to the coral reefs along with damagingv secured habitat for undersea wild life
If memory serves correct I never read or heard of any thing said from your mouth during that period of the ongoing destruction of the reefs
At least yuh cud have rounded up the environmentalist groups to March
However you a well known supposedly protector of the environment comes her to make a speech about truth when you and other members supposedly having concerns about the environment stood vanguard silent while govt policies destroyed Barbados valuable
    reefs
Also what is so amazing you gve glowing accolades to Mia intelligence
A woman who has conned the brightest brains including yours into accepting her knee jerked policies many which has bite bajans as well as the environment in the rear end
    Peace
    Hypocrite

  4. Bu is overtly political, but politics can be a time wasting and energy wasting game, where both sides are part of the same game.
Bu is overtly BLP leaning and this is the first time in Bu history that BLP have been in power.
Politics is contentious causing divisions that escalate on net as shown in America’s kkk fractured society but is akin to picking scabs instead of letting them heal.
Covid should not be a political issue and opposition and Government should work together singing from same hymn sheet.
Mistakes are made, lives are lost, resources are limited but there are no winners and everyone loses.
People can be dragged into fights against system when they experience it’s faults (like Kammie with Family Law injustices), but it is a lifelong fight that can become a sense of purpose, which you must be willing to spend all your time and sacrificing your life for.

  6. What Kammie Holder describes is the quintessential personality of the benevolent dictator.

Not that elected dictatorship is foreign to Barbados but does Holder agree that this is the result of a constructive disobedience to every democratic principle over decades.

And does David not concede that his preferred alter of political worship has so degenerated that there are currently no differences between socalled democracy and autocracy.

  7. @David, it’s not about preaching it’s more about the unpalatable truth which is fastly becoming extinct in Barbados. It seems too many are compromised into silence or have become self-serving. Look at the Licensing Authority issue where the public is inconvenienced because of pecuniary stalemates. We are now in a state where those with authority, power, management, or leadership behave as if they are above reproach. I just find it absolutely impossible to worship another for it’s a recipe for abuse of power, social dislocation while the elite bedfellows live in luxury. Our lives are shaped by life exposures be it from reading or socialization.

David, the saying drunken words are sober thoughts, stirred my disgust when I learned my phone was illegally tapped by the government in the past. Thus, like the late Inspector Bowen, I use my phone knowing all my communications are compromised for political control of such apparatus are abused by self-serving leaders who appoint their people to do the dirty work. The media houses are compromised and everybody wants to be everybody`s friend while the unconnected takes alms and suffer.

Not one story in the newspapers in Barbados about Pegasus and the illegal wiretapping taking place in Barbados. Who will protect rights and encourage good governance when most academics, social leaders, and begging NGOs are all now behaving as if they are compromised? Thus, I owe it to my children and future generations to call out the ugly and unjust irrespective of the contempt shown towards me or the consequences.

PS: Please do not refer to me as a social activist I am just a Barbadian who hates deceit and believes in sustainable long-term goals for Barbados, inclusive of key stakeholders and not just acolytes and elites.

What Kammie Holder describes is the quintessential personality of the benevolent dictator.

    Xxxcxx
However Kammie Holder is quick to support the dictator policies
    As earlier I mentioned
He along with other environmentalist stood silent as Barbados reefs were being Destroyed by COVID
Not buying his now all awakening the fact lies in action speaking louder than words
Not expecting him to defend his silence when the reefs where ongoing destruction by the Ships
Because even if words where said after the destruction
It means absolutely nothing as the damage done is irreversible
    So sad

  10. KAMMIE HOLDER
THE COMPLETE CORRUPTION YOU DESCRIBE IS, WHILE RELATIVELY NEW IN BARBADOS TO WHAT IS BEING SEEN ELSEWHERE, IS WELL DESCRIBED IN THE BIBLICAL BOOK OF AMOS IN GREAT DETAIL.

THE COMING SOLUTION IS ALSO THERE DESCRIBED. READ IT AND BE CONSOLED SIR
READ THERE TOO IN CHAPTER 3V3THE TRUISM THAT TWO CAN NOT WALK TOGETHER AND LESS THEY BE AGREED. THE COROLLARY IS ALSO TRUE. YOU CAN SEE IT ON THESE PAGES DAILY, AS A GOOD EXAMPLE

READ ALSO IN CHAPTER 3V7 THAT THE LORD DOES NOTHING EXCEPT HE FIRST DECLARES IT TO HIS PEOPLE THE PROPHETS.

SEEK HIS FACE, DO HIS WILL AND RELAX SIR, BECAUSE MOST OF THE HORSES HAVE LONG BOULTED FROM THE STABLES………AND THEY WILL NOT BE CAUGHT.

  11. Why did you Angela Cox not spearhead a public campaign to save the reefs if you were aware of it?
Or are you just a hypocrite too?

  12. How well I remember Kammie Holder vocal outburst during the time word of a WTE plant would have been built
How well I remember Kammie condemnation of the WTE all over social media and his loud opinions about the plant negative impact on the environment
However in the very time when the reefs and undersea life needed help he was silent
As the old saying goes high wind knows where old house lives
His hypocritical stance in not condemning a govt policy that destroyed the reefs is one which would be forever etched in the minds of those who hold sacredness to the eviroment

  13. RE A suggested slogan sure to win favour with the public is โ€The Return of the Donโ€.

You key boarded: “Political trust is at an all time low” , I agree with you. BUT is there not a lack of trust in other bodies in our Social System. The politicians are merely a microcosm of the wider society. Should we not expect this in a modern, better educated and informed society. Our Education System has trained us to think critically. If what is being promoted is repugnant to common sense ,we need to mistrust the purveyor and his message.
So we are in a good place. Those who do not like the transition will have to “lump it”.

  16. @Vincent

Politicians are only human. Before we elected them we knew their “short comings”. We took the chance hoping they will behave differently. We voted them in AND we can vote them out if we think there are better in the society. As I argued, our expectations may be too high. Are other politicians in the Caribbean and the world at large doing much better?. We can only work with the physical and intellectual resources at our disposal.

  19. RE You are a fan of Mark Morrison?

FOR GOD’S SAKE, WHEN WILL YOU LEARN THE PROPER WORD ORDER IN ASKING A QUESTION IN ENGLISH?

    HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES.

WOULD YOU SAY THAT THE USA IS BOUNCING BACK WELL FROM WHAT WAS PERCIEVED AS THE ADVERSITY OF DONALD TRUMP?

CAN YOU CONCEIVE HOW IT WILL BE POSSIBLE FOR THE USA TO BOUNCE BACK FROM THE OBVIOUS ADVERSITY OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION WHICH IS RUN BY, ONLY GOD KNOW WHO?

WOULD YOU SAY THAT BARBADOS IS BOUNCING BACK WELL FROM WHAT WAS THE OBVIOUS ADVERSITY OF THE LAST ADMINISTRATION LED BY FUMBLE STUART ET ALLITER?

WOULD YOU SAY THAT MIA IS REALLY A SUPREME LEADER AS ONE LIKES TO OPINE IN HIS MORONIC MOUTHINGS HERE REGULARLY ON BU.

  20. @Vincent

A true observation but does it change the expectations of citizens if mistakes are repeated or if problems are left unsolved? Bear in mind politicians are operating with collective responsibility i.e. as part of a รขย€ย˜systemรขย€ย™.

  21. IS IT NOT SO THAT IT IS MORE LIKELY THAT PERMANENT DAMAGE WILL OCCUR TO THE REEFS, AND TO THE CREATURES THAT LIVE THEREON, BY LEECHING OF CHEMICALS IN PESTICIDES THAN BY THE SHIPS ANCHORS?

WHICH IS MORE LIKELY TO DAMAGE THE REEFS MORE: CONTINUAL BIOLOGICAL DAMAGE BY CHEMICALS OR CASUAL ONE OFF MECHANICAL DAMAGE BY ANCHORS.

Our Education System has trained us to think critically. If what is being promoted is repugnant to common sense ,we need to mistrust the purveyor and his message.”

People should place themselves in the middle between the two main parties of Government and Opposition using both sides to help and serve their own interests.

Opposition parties will appear to be anti-Government but when in office they are the Government and Government has power that it uses against people and will always cover up it’s faults.

The public interface with legacy systems of Courts, Hospitals, Police, public and social services departments and institutions, which have many faults and are answerable to Government and various regulatory bodies but most often are not held to account for low standards.

Media makes mountains out of molehills and have political leanings but their bottom line is their profits and they not acting in people’s interests.

Empowerment of the people is considered undesirable against the control of the masses.

  26. David

Can we only have collective memory going back to Churchhill, for your authoritative sources but for some of us he represents a more checkered recall. Why do we continue to give everlasting life to a avowed racist.

Substantively, Churchill presumes a universe where only elected dictatorship or monarchy or autocracy or communism or forms of slavery existed. Should we continue to limit ourselves to his narrow mental confines? And if his least best of the worst aint wukking, is it rational to continue to give it the same life afforded the racist Churchill.

It seems that we are in a place where the environment is perfect for rebellion frankly. An opposition can always put โ€˜licksโ€™ in a government because all administration screw-up on key issues so that’s expected but to your VERY valid point where is the leadership to work with the administration to collectively corrall really difficult problems like this pandemic… ain’t going to happen.

And by the way …. as @Vincent notes if de politicians come from within us and we were warned (repeatedly) that our current PM should not ascend to the top because of her deep personality flaws then why all this angst now.
