Boris Johnson to chair first cabinet on Thursday

That finishes our coverage of Boris Johnson’s first day as prime minister.
It came with the biggest ever clear out of cabinet without a change of party in power.
BBC political editor Laura Kuensberg said it was “not a reshuffle it’s a new government”.
Tomorrow, Mr Johnson chairs his first cabinet meeting and faces the House of Commons. And of course we’ll bring you full coverage of that across the BBC.

  1. Anyone who believes that the politicians in Barbados are the worst of all time is wrong. Just look at Little Britain. Little Britain will be the new poorhouse on the edge of the EU. It is only a matter of time before all coloured migrants return to the Caribbean, especially Barbadian migrants, because everything will be better there. Then the honourable Attorney General has the opportunity to arrest the two Youtubers at the airport upon entry. Thank you Dale Marshall for imprisoning those who undermine the government!

We are fortunate that it is not Boris Johnson, but the honourable Prime Minister Mia Mottley, who will lead Barbados for the next two decades.

Thank you Mia Mottley for the thrilling reforms you have set off in just a few months on behalf of economic liberalism! She commands a skilful cabinet with an iron fist, is close to the people and knows all our problems.

The new prime minister is making a Commons statement, after holding his first Cabinet meeting.

Speaking to MPs, Boris Johnson said his government would throw itself into Brexit negotiations with energy.

He said other arrangements for the Northern Ireland backstop were “perfectly compatible with the Belfast Agreement to which we are, of course, steadfastly committed”.

He said Michael Gove would make plans for a no-deal Brexit a “top priority”.

He also assured EU citizens they would have “absolute certainty” of their right to live in the UK.

On Thursday, he addressed his cabinet for the first time as prime minister.

You may want to deny the racism behind the words “Go back to where you came from” and it is not my duty to parse words but most Americans know the sentiment behind the statement and this is borne out by opinion polls.

Perhaps you should read the opinion piece by George Conway (never heard of him?), he just happened to be married to Kelly Anne Conway (Trump counsellor) and whose mother is Filipino.

Opinion polls are no indicators of the facts on the ground, The American election of 2016 is a prime example. you refer to George Conway article in the WP to illustrate the fact that the statement by Trump was racist. I have lived in the US and am aware that there is racism. There’s racism in Barbados also. The views of Conway’s are his views and have nothing to do with the context in which Trump used the words. You seem reluctant to admit that the statement was cherry-picked to convey a racist slant. Was Obama being racist when he referred to “that could have me or words to that effect alluding to the death of a black man? After all he was the president of all America? What about Eric Sparkes, the black Georgia lawmaker who entered an express line at a Publix supermarket and was told she had excess items : she then accused a Cuban American of telling her to go back where she came from. Subsequent events proved that man, never told her so ( the event seemed to have been caught on camera). The immigrant Cuban-American admitted he did cuss her off, The WP is a publication that needs to rebuild its reputation for fair reporting: it hasn’t got much of a reputation these days after collusion thing.

  9. You all say Boris is a nut well we get a classic one here too in Professor Persaud.

Today on the news the may said “we will not be forced into a settlement with the foreign creditors as we are in a good position to negotiate.” Lol

I near hit the old car when I heard that. You ain’t pay a man for 15 months now, you don’t know what you will end up having to pay them to avoid being put in court and you in a good place to negotiate? On top of that because of how you all have drawn out these negotiations you can’t dear go back to the international market to borrow a blind cent till this settle and you thin you in a good place to negotiate? My friend you and them clowns wunna hire got us looking to get put in the same boat as Argentina and you got the Gaul to stand up and tell the press you in a good place to negotiate.

Listen do us a favour and sit your short tail down and hush do!

  10. @ David July 25, 2019 2:29 PM

In this day and age with the rapid change in technology, a country’s leaders would be guilty of incompetence if an effort was not made to get highly educated migrants. The future is for the highly educated which might seem harsh but it is the way forward. Robotics will mean a lot of unskilled labor won’t be needed.

that is the same dude sent a nasty letter to the Financial Times of all places with A BIG LIE in it THAT PENSIONS HAD RISEN, when they were cut by nearly 100% that same week…and got EXPOSED for that lie…within hours..

  12. WURA-WAR-on-U Avatar

well OK…..Professor No Backing Down says, “the island don’t have to borrow for 4 years”…so what about AFTER THE 4 YEARS…and the people still don’t get their money cause ya have such a strong poker hand…Professor Smart Ass.

“What we have been trying to do is to get the best deal possible for Barbados, which means that it can’t be the quickest deal possible. If you play poker do you fold early? If you don’t need to borrow for four years you have a good hand. So, we are following the right strategy,” Persaud explained.

Persaud charged that the external creditors were attempting to apply pressure on Barbados by speaking publicly on the process, painting a picture that things were not going well. He also contended that the media was unwittingly helping them achieve these ends.”

  13. WURA-WAR-on-U Avatar

While there are people in Barbados who cannot even AFFORD to go to the supermarket or FEED THEIR CHILDREN, pensioners on disability some have children…HAVE NO INCOME..because government CUT THEIR ONLY INCOME….. and this leach and parasite in the lives of Bajans is popping SHIT..

  14. If I was a foreign creditor and read this report he was pontificating in, I would let him and WO know what Lord they serving.

You owe a man who you refuse to finalise settlement with 15 months after defaulting and you claiming you in a good place to negotiate. You in a good place to get put in court and black listed by the international lending community, that’s what you in a good place for!

I really got to wonder if the PM understand the position these clowns she got around her putting this country in!

Dr Lucas, you are an amazing guy …amazingly hypocritical that is, or ROFLOL funny!

YOU … YOU said I have said on this blog that it is unwise to denigrate those who hold different views from your own. This type of action seems to be the wont of liberals.

When did Trump become a liberal … you surely can’t be serious.

When coupled with your cherry picking” accusation and contrasted with ur amazing *[was] Obama being racist when he referred to “that could have me or words to that effect I must believe you are being absolutely hilarious because you CAN’T be that hypocritical a scientist who relies on facts, now can you!

Trump’s remarks were divisive, uncalled for and denigrating (to use ur word)…the racist label is irrelevant…he was out of place and uncouth to tell duly elected US Congresswomen to return from whence they came.

That you thus label unsavory remarks liberal is hilarious… as you must be pulling our collective legs, as I said you can’t be making a serious point.

    I gone.

  16. To further show his limited outlook on the economy he justifies them dragging their tail by saying ” we will not be returning to borrow on the international market for a few years” so wait, what happens if the private sector needs to go to these same lenders for project funding you stop to think about that? What chances you think they will have when the sovereign state their company based in has defaulted 15 months ago and is yet to settle on an agreement?

I tired saying book smart ain t street smart and here is another classic example.

A supermarket let we call it ” Bim Grocery” runs up a massive bill say with Stokes and refuses to pay it when due, or defaults in other words. 15 months later after Stokes try to get some sort of money out them with no luck, a director gets up and opens his RH mouth and says this ” we ain’t rushing to pay wunna cause for the next 4 years we going buy from you competitor SGF so we aint in no rush to pay you. ”

Well if I was Stokes let me tell you gloves off I coming for your short ass now.

I always remember the 2 rules you never break in cases like this. 1 you don’t make promises you can’t, or intend to keep and 2 don’t ever disrespect your creditor.

We have therefore sent the message that we will use your money until further notice, or till the need arises for us to return to you.

In the meantime the private sector will not be entertained there either and our chance at improving our credit rating from junk will just have to wait!

I take it that you are speaking tongue-in-cheek. The statement referred to liberals and as an example of liberal doings I highlighted the gender confusion going on at present. Apart from saying that, I have never claimed that Trump was a liberal. He maybe boorish and vulgar but I have never claimed he was a liberal.

  32. Without an agreement with the so-called white masters from the North, the rating will not improve significantly, foreign investment will be hampered, Sagicor will not return and Canadian banks will intensify their preparations to leave the island.

I very much hope, however, that the government will soon be able to bring the negotiations to a successful conclusion. However, we’ll have to make the bride named Barbados a little prettier. Now is the time to lay off 10000 civil servants, privatise or liquidate all state-owned enterprises to get the island back on its feet. The government could use this human sacrifice to appease our beloved Goddess Bim.

Elections are not due for about four years. So there is enough time for social justice through mass layoffs. I trust our beloved Prime Minister to draw the right conclusions from the difficult negotiations and to sacrifice the civil servants.

I use a metaphor: Barbados is like a hot-air balloon. Sometimes you have to throw off excess weight. Sometimes it’s sand, sometimes civil servants.

Here are some examples of “cherry picking” to prove racism:
    1) Order my employees to code Apartment applications to allow me to ascertain the race of applicants in order to refuse to rent to Black people. (This activity caused me to be cited twice by Nixon’s justice Dept. for discrimination). Let’s call this looks like a duck

    2) After the mugging and rape of a jogger in NYC Central park I take out a full- page ad in the newspapers calling for the death penalty for the accused who were all black. Years later when they were exonerated, I refuse to apologize. Let’s call this swims like a duck

    3) After the election of the first Black President I insist that he wasn’t born in the US and demands that he produce his birth certificate, when the birth certificate was produced, I insist that it is fake and announce that I am sending investigators to Hawaii to get to the bottom of the forgery.

This is quacks like a duck and we can conclude it is a duck albeit a racist duck

@Doc Lucas, I am complety unclear what there is to ‘agree to disagree’ about!

You stated emphatically that “…it is unwise to denigrate those who hold different views from your own.”

I asked you to explain how the group you noted who act in that way can be so singled out when the President of the US, the man with the biggest bull-horn in the world (thus superceding the media noise of basically ANY group) has on a daily basis REPEATEDLY denigrated any and everyone who has a different view to his.

I never said liberals don’t denigrate people…simply wanted to know WHY highlight them and not Chief Bull Horn!

So what are you disgreeing about again!

And BTW, @Sargeant’s ‘walk-talks like a duck’ post should have been instructive that Trump’s motivation is indeed based on racial dog whistling.

A comment in and of itself is not racist or insulting or pejorative …it’s the context, motivation and intent of the speaker/writer that determines an interpretation.

What makes this man so abhorrent is not his ideology or disdain of political correctness or denial of climate change realities or any of the other policy issues about which one may disagree… it is his disgusting, self serving behaviour as a national leader.

That YOU would make the rather blunt remark that “…to denigrate those who hold different views…” is unwise and yet find an impossible holier than thou position to defend the person who wontonly and deliberately perpetuates that stance for cheap political gain is freaking astonishing!

But it says everything about how this man has uppended political discourse and given credence where previously it was harshly censored at the national level…. what was right, regardless of political suasion is now wrong because you guys have to defend this demigoguery !

C’est la vie…we agree on that!

“Afro-Caribbean people in the UK have cautious and mixed views in their assessment of the new British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

In view of the Prime Minister’s failure to mention in his speech to the nation whether it is his government’s intention to directly address the imbalances in our society, it might be prematurely optimistic if the Afro-Caribbean community were to expect a radical change in previous governments’ attitudes to their welfare and advancement in society.

As Mr Johnson spoke, it was noticeable that unlike his three immediate predecessors, he did not acknowledge that there are major problems of inequality in this country as they relate to black people.”
