So, the highly anticipated Super Bowl 2019 championship game is over, and New England Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady, is being widely hailed as a “hero” for winning an unprecedented 6th Super Bowl title. But, as far as I am concerned, the real  hero of Super Bowl 2019 is not Tom Brady. Rather, it is Barbados’ cultural Ambassador, Robyn “Rihanna” Fenty !
Rihanna is “the” Super Bowl hero simply because it was her highly  principled and courageous stance of standing in solidarity with black activist footballer, Colin Kaepernick, and rejecting the National Football League’s offer to be the featured performer at the highly prestigious Super Bowl half time show that will be forever remembered as the distinguishing heroic act of Super Bowl 2019 !
Let us recall that during the 2016 to 2017 American Football season, Colin Kaepernick — the black quarterback of the San Francisco 49’ers football team — took to protesting against systemic US anti-Black racism in general and white racist Police killings of African-Americans in particular, by publicly kneeling (rather than standing at attention) during the playing of the US national anthem.
At the time, Kaepernick explained his stance as follows:-
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour. To me, this is bigger than football……..There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Needless-to-say, Colin Kaepernick was punished by the powers that be for his bold, principled, and positively disruptive gesture of protest. Not only did United States President Donald Trump publicly call for him to be fired, but not one single National Football League (NFL) club would hire the highly talented Kaepernick for the 2018 to 2019 football season !
It is against this background that our Rihanna stepped forward and stood up for Colin Kaepernick and– by extension — for the cause of Black freedom and justice that Kaepernick so superbly represents and symbolizes.
In turning down the NFL’s offer to perform at the Super Bowl half time show, Rihanna was turning down an opportunity to perform before a massive global audience of in excess of 100 Million persons, as well as turning down the opportunity to benefit from a host of future lucrative Super Bowl related commercial endorsements.
But, just as Colin Kaepernick was clear that some things are “bigger than football”, Rihanna was demonstrating that she too was clear that some things are bigger than entertainment spectacles and financial benefits !
And so, we Barbadians would be failing in our duty if we do not publicly acknowledge and record that our Rihanna performed a truly significant and heroic act when she stood up  not merely for Colin Kaepernick, but for all people of colour, and for the sacred principles of freedom and justice.

    Hyatt they claim wasn’t bringing foreign exchange yet still the St. Lucian government long known for poaching ventures we fcuk up is set to complete a Hyatt. A Hyatt started as a result of the ra*^ hole of one perp scaring off foreign investors.

    Aren’t other tourist islands benefitting from FDI and FX of a Hyatt? We await the contorted arguments otherwise known as lies from the glorified yard fowl and lap dog miller.

    Bajans who love this country have to stand up to bullies who choose to back one political party and dismiss submissions from neutrals and alternative political parties.

    Forty percent of the electorate didn’t bother to vote so the 30-0 isn’t all its cranked up to be and a pest who didn’t even face the electorate cant speak for us.

    I am trying to find any public comment that Rihanna made about this issue, all I know is that word leaked out that Rihanna had turned down the gig in solidarity with Kap and the media ran with it and now Commissiong is trying to hitch his star to Rihanna’s sun.

    For the record many other entertainers turned down the opportunity but some performers long in the tooth and fading from memory used it as a chance to revive dormant careers and according to the folks who know these things the half-time show was a dud.

    Back to the substantive issue, Kap said his kneeling was to protest against Police violence against Black people, he could have shut up and said nothing and earn his millions like so many other black athletes, but instead he risked earnings and his career. Trump and his supporters with their bully pulpit tried to portray the kneeling as disrespecting the flag. Many black men served and died under that flag from the Civil War, WW1, WW11 through Korea onto Vietnam, Desert Storm what have you and when they returned to the USA they were treated like shit, the same flag that women wear as bikini bottoms or protestors burn, or adorn the sides vehicles is now “desecrated” because Kap took a knee. Trump uses the flag to earn political points, when it was time for him to suit up under that flag he developed a severe case of “bone spurs”.

    If you pay attention to the Caribbean News media you will note that my articles appear in newspapers from Jamaica in the north to Guyana in the south, and in wider Pan-African publications as well.

    It would seem though that I am wasting my time sending articles to Barbados Underground.

    The National Assembly (an), directed by Juan Guaidó, approved, for the first time, the statute governing the transition to Venezuela’s democracy, which could mean the way to achieve the long-awaited interim government and the fall of Nicolas Maduro.

    The document, according to review, contains the route to appoint officials who would take over institutions of the Venezuelan state, as well as positions inside and outside the country.

    However, one of its most important points has to do with the possibility of requesting help from the international community to restore state sovereignty in the territory. This could mean that the one could allow foreign intervention if this is a guarantee to achieve democracy in the country.

    In addition, the law of the statute governing the transition to democracy and the restoration of the constitution establishes that elections should be convened before 12 months of the transitional government. It also points to the renewal of public powers to make an cash called to cover.

    It is worth mentioning that the law also empowers parliament to issue laws to address the humanitarian emergency and the economic crisis. It also contemplates the integration of the Bolivian National Armed Force (Fanb).

    According to Articles 233, 333 and 350 of the Venezuelan Constitution, Juan Guaidó is well within his power as president of the National Assembly to assume the presidency of Venezuela on a provisional basis. Not only were the presidential elections held last year UN-free and Unfair, but more than 50 countries did not recognize their results—leaving Maduro with no domestic or international legitimacy as president.

    Guaidó was elected unanimously following a coalition “pact” to rotate the National Assembly’s presidency every January 5.

    Guaidó had gone mostly unnoticed until Jan. 5, 2019, when he assumed the presidency of the National Assembly, which was mostly made up of Maduro’s opposition after the 2015 elections. Guaidó rose to that position thanks to an internal agreement among the opposition, where each party would take turns holding the presidency. When Guaidó was 26, he joined a group headed by Leopoldo López, who founded the Voluntad Popular (VP) Party. In 2019, it was VP’s turn and the party picked Guaidó. Guaidó is said to be the protégé of Leopoldo López, the jailed politician and founder of VP who headed the opposition since Chávez became president.

    Guaidó was a coordinator for VP in Vargas and served as an alternate representative in the National Assembly from 2010 to 2015. He was then elected as representative in 2015. He was proclaimed president of the Assembly, and it’s because of this that he assumes the role of President of the Republic until elections are called, as stated in the 1999 Constitution.”

    Article 233 of the Constitution states that the president of the National Assembly must assume the presidency of the republic in case there’s a power vacuum… Guaidó claims there is because of the questionable elections that weren’t recognized by a large portion of the international community.

    What is at stake?

    The citizens of Venezuela face an increasingly dire situation, and there is no end in sight yet. Hyperinflation is expected to exceed 10 million percent in 2019. Venezuelans lost 24 pounds on average last year due to lack of food, and by all indications this year will only be worse. Meanwhile, the health system has collapsed, and there are rampant medicine shortages.

    This is not just a humanitarian crisis, but also a matter of regional security; the Venezuelan exodus is expected to reach more than 5.3 million by the end of this year. Maduro’s regime has moved from a dictatorial regime that violates civil liberties to a mafia state that actively participates in illegal activities. Complicit in a wide range of smuggling and trafficking activities, Maduro’s inner circle has helped to dismantle the country’s institutions and rule of law. Seventy-five public officials, including former vice president Tareck El Aissami, and Venezuelan citizens have been targeted by U.S. and international sanctions for corruption and drug trafficking activities.

    The first trucks of humanitarian aid have arrived at Venezuela’s border with Colombia — but they were not allowed to enter the country.
    Pressure on Maduro to receive the aid convoy mounted after a European Union-backed crisis group called for dialogue and elections and warned against interventionism.

    But Maduro still rejected the aid convoy and several truckloads of food and medical supplies are now being stored in a warehouse at the border.

    The government of embattled President Nicolas Maduro has vowed to block their entry saying Venezuelans are ‘not beggars’.

Hospital staff and families of patients say the health service has crumbled, neglected by the government over the last five years.
