New York Caribbean Institute Calls for Dallas Police officer who killed St. Lucian national in his own home to be charged with murder

Bothan Shem Jean

BROOKLYN: BROOKLYN: The New York based Caribbean Guyana Institute for Democracy (CGID) on Friday harshly condemned the killing of 26 year-old St. Lucian national and Dallas, Texas resident, Botham Shem Jean. Jean was shot and killed around 10:00 p.m Thursday night, September 6, 2018 in his own home, by a female Dallas police officer. The officer told investigators that she returned home from her shift and entered the wrong apartment in her building.

In a statement issued Friday, CGID President, Rickford Burke, said the officer’s negligent, reckless conduct and depraved indifference to human life resulted in murder. He consequently called on Dallas District Attorney Faith Johnson to prosecute the officer accordingly and to the fullest extent of the law.

Burke said “the culture of policing that has emerged in black communities all across America is one where cops shoot to kill first, then ask questions after.” He asserted that “Police officers are killing black men while walking innocently on the streets, driving innocently in our cars and now while living innocently in our own home. This is too much for a people to bear. CGID therefore calls on the US Justice Department to review and revise the protocols for armed engagement by law enforcement in America.”

Burke said “CGID intends to write our US Senators and Members of Congress from New York, to push for a national review and reform of protocols on how and when law enforcement officers engage in the use of force. This is long overdue. How many more black men must be killed before we take action?” Burke posited that “politicians who sit by and do nothing about the epidemic of law enforcement murders of innocent black men are equally complicit in these killings and should be held to account.”

Dallas police department Friday issued a statement claiming that the officer called for help and told responding officers “she entered the victim’s apartment believing that it was her own.” The incident took place at South Side Flats, an upscale apartment complex located in downtown, Dallas, a few blocks from Police headquarters.

Dallas Police said the officer was in full uniform and “fired her weapon striking the victim who was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.  Burke blasted the Dallas Police for not releasing details about how the officer reached into Jean’s apartment and whether a breathalyzer was administered, as would have been the case with an ordinary citizen. He also questioned how Jean’s name was released to the public when Police simultaneously confirmed  that the next of kin notification was not made.

The CGID head said the officer’s story is inexplicable and implausible. Emphasizing that Caribbean community believes the officer’s account strains credulity, Burke questioned its veracity saying “if she went to the wrong apartment how did she make initial contact with Mr. Jean? How do you mistakenly shoot your neighbor who you see and presumably interact with regularly, without recognizing him?  “The Dallas Police chief expressly stated that her department is no longer pursuing a “police involved shooting investigation,” but is seeking a warrant pursuant to a manslaughter investigation. Clearly the police evidence suggests that this is not an accident and that the officer’s account contradicts the evidence. Hence, in the interest of transparency CGID calls on the Dallas Police Department to stop disseminating misinformation and disclosed the facts and circumstances of Mr. Jean’s death forthwith, lest it is viewed as concealment,” Burke contended.

the US to study accounting at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. He also studied at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, in Castries, St. Lucia before migrating to the US. At the time of his death, he worked in Dallas as a risk assurance associate for accounting firm Price Waterhouse Coopers.

CGID Has called on all Caribbean American organizations and nationals to condemn Jean’s killing and to support and express solidarity with his family.

  1. You mean all the while He was making all this and saying it was good He already had a plan to burn it up. Makes a lot of sense. Like a lot of things so many Christians say.

  2. All these funny racists and funny Christians on the blog reminded me of “Love Thy Neighbour.” I’m watching it on Youtube. Still hilarious!

  4. Wait a minute, Albinos live in Africa too!!

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecution_of_people_with_albinism

“Persecution of people with albinism (sometimes abbreviated PWA[1]) is based on the belief that certain body parts of albinistic people can transmit magical powers. Such superstition is present especially in some parts of the African Great Lakes region, it has been promulgated and exploited by witch doctors and others who use such body parts as ingredients in rituals, concoctions and potions with the claim that their magic will bring prosperity to the user (muti or medicine murder)[2]”

  5. “Albinism is a genetically inherited condition which is very rare and, worldwide, affects approximately one in twenty thousand people[4] Although rare in the western world, albinism is quite common in sub-Saharan Africa, likely as a result of consanguinity.[3] Both parents, who may or may not be albinos themselves, must carry the gene if it is to be passed on to the child.

Albinism occurs in both males and females and is not specific to any race or ethnic group. Statistics show that fifty percent of albinistic people in Tanzania have a known albinistic relative,[3]:80 although very few understand or are educated about the medical and genetic causes of this condition.

Many believe it is a punishment from God or bad luck, and that their “disease” could be contagious, which is often the view of even members of the medical and professional community.

These misconceptions, coupled with the lack of education, are some of the key reasons that albinism is so heavily persecuted.

This lack of knowledge about people with albinism means that folktales and superstition in the name of witchcraft take the place of medical and scientific facts in the minds of many native Africans, with and without albinism, which in turn has major effects on the social integration of albinistic people into African society.

Ninety-eight percent of albinos die by the age of forty for reasons which could easily be prevented.[5] ”

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So it sounds like some folks on here are very poorly educated and actually believe albinism is a curse from God or bad luck.

One could argue that this is one of the many beliefs that is traceable back to our ancestors in Africa and which they brought with them to the new world!!

The Dallas Police got an illegal warrant to search Mr. Jean’s apartment for drugs and found marijuana. The search was illegal because Police officers obtain search warrants by convincing a neutral and detached magistrate that they have probable cause to believe that criminal activity is occurring at the place to be searched or that evidence of a crime may be found there. But there was no probable cause because Jean was already deceased when they obtained the warrant. This is, of course a transparent attempt to distort the justice process, and there is a good chance that it will work. After all they found a crooked judge to issue an illegal warrant, they will find another crooked judge to distort the process of justice at trial.

    ++++++++++++++++++++
Well she has clearly told several lies already because her story about the state of Jean’s front door has already changed several times in her story, so at the very least, all but one of those versions must be lies. Actually it’s pretty clear to anyone with an IQ greater than their hat size that all of the versions are lies, and that she has told many other lies besides in her accounts of what transpired on that fateful night.

It sounds more like the curse your man Yahweh put on poor Ham and his descendants; wouldn’t you say so, John?

Imagine a whole race being cursed just because its male progenitor, unluckily, happened to stumble upon his naked drunken papa.

Based on that genetic principle of consanguinity this albino phenomenon must have had it ‘Genesis”‘ way back in time when Cain, (after being spurned by Yahweh for being a tiller of the land) impregnated his own sister.

If only Lot had kept away from the strong drink and kept his wizened pecker-head undercover this albinism trait would have disappeared from the human race.

Just imagine your man Yahweh eliminating an entire evil and wicked species living in Sodom & Gomorrah only to watch while two virgins take advantage of their dying papa in order to save the tribe.

Wouldn’t you say that your man in the sky called Jehovah is to be blamed for these genetic mistakes?

He should have transported at least one of the girls to Australia; the same way he did the randy kangaroo.

  11. Approximately 24 hours ago I wrote the following:

They will be going over Jean’s history with a fine- tooth comb, if he has so much as a jay walking ticket they will want to make it look like he committed a felony.

Watch how much legs the story of that discovery of marijuana generates, watch how the “why did he not comply” crowd spin it as “he had something to hide’’ hence his non-compliance, watch how the victim is put on trial.

  12. I have not seen many Albinos in Barbados during my life.

Is there any way to get an idea of how many existed in Barbados?

    Here is a possible way.

Remember there was a calypsonian called Yellow Man in Barbados?

Let’s say Yellow was how Bajans in the past referred to someone who was an albino.

There seems to be a calypsonian in Jamaica also called Yellow man , not sure if he is an Albino.

We could look in the database of slaves in 1834 and see if there are any slaves with Yellow in their names.

    https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/britishslaves/?name=yellow&keyword=barbados+1834&keyword_x=1&name_x=1

We know the population of slaves in Barbados was approximately 80,000 so if you went by the statistic given in Wikipedia, you would expect to find 4 instances of names with Yellow in them.

In fact there were 8, but there is a double counting so it seems there were only 4.

If you go back to 1817 and look for slaves called Yellow, you will find 11, 7 of them passed away in the period to 1817.

    https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/britishslaves/?name=yellow&keyword=barbados+1817&keyword_x=1&name_x=1

Between 1817 and 1834 only one slave in those 17 years who got the name Yellow was born.

    Between 1754 and 1817 there were 11, about 1 every 6 years.

If Yellow is a way of checking the occurrence of Albinism in the slave population in Barbados then it looks like it was decreasing as slavery approached its abolition.

  13. Watch how much legs the story of that discovery of marijuana generates, watch how the “why did he not comply” crowd spin it as “he had something to hide’’ hence his non-compliance, watch how the victim is put on trial.

We saw that with the Stewarts I believe.

Maybe it is just a human something.

I also agree “John Griffiths had is day in court and his problem has been resolved,” however, what is there to prevent the Stewarts from “having their day in court” as well?

An since you’re so concerned about their plight, perhaps you should solicit, on their behalf……. the services of Verla, Hal Gollop, Guyson Mayers or any of the other lawyers at George Street to assist them……(to be on the safe side, don’t recommend Carrington….yuh hear??)

Yes…..the SAME corrupt system that INCLUDES crooked Michael Carrington………who, by the way, had a civil suit brought against him in November 2017…….. by Ajax Construction……….(which is yet to be heard by the Court)….

How then do you explain the Salem witch trials and the subsequent hanging of many innocent people?

Weren’t the people involved of good European Christian stock; unless you want to put the blame squarely on poor ‘black’ Tituba’s shoulders?

What’s the difference between European witchcraft and African magic aka voodoo or obeah in the West Indies?

Isn’t your Bible also full of magic (you would want to call them Miracles)?

Or were they the works of your Go(o)d and not of the (D)evil like making a serpent speak to bring about all the evil in the world?

Since “America is founded on the Bible” did your Bible also instruct the European to decimate the natives, massacre their livestock (buffalo) and steal their lands?

@PLT at 8:02 if those allegations (facts) you cited prove to be accurate then this case reverts to the simple fact that has been asked previously: are you suggesting that any damning evidence will be suppressed to free this woman of this crime….(which would be a brutal assassination)?

    Let the investigation be completed.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to expect that if national security details can be leaked from the damn Situation Room or the Oval Office that the Texas Rangers or Dallas PD could subvert a conviction for 1st degree murder by this woman with scores of journalists searching for their Pulitzer moment, activists on the alert and then the political pressures.

This matter is becoming extremely difficult to properly craft a practical motivation…how do you kill someone in the proverbial cold blood over intrusive noise? …but as you have suggested from day one…her story was quite incomprehensible anyhow but this is now getting into twilight crazy zone territory.

I am simply pointing out that damning evidence is ALREADY being suppressed to free this woman of this crime. I have no crystal ball so I do not know to what extent this pattern of official malfeasance will continue, but my faith in the Texas judicial system is shallow given their abominable track record in this case so far, not to mention the centuries of evil which preceded this case. I do not see evidence that inclines me to conclude that it was 1st degree murder, furthermore my interest is less in this particular case that in what it shows about the broader criminal justice system in Texas and the USA.

I think that they will use procedural delays to ensure that the news cycle moves on, then they will move for a change of trial venue and use all the tricks at their disposal to warp the system.

@PLT, well if as the news facts (allegations) you recapped are accurate, like:
    * “video … shows that the doors in the Dallas apartment building automatically slam shut if let go”
*”A second video shows Guyger could not have used her key to force open his door”
*”Apartment door numbers are also clearly visible and lit up in neon” (plus Jean’s distinctive red mat at entryway)
*”…Guyger had made noise complaints about Jean, 26, to the building management in the days before his death.”

If those apply then she has lied extensively and on the face of it would fit into the judgement of either of :
*…intentionally and knowingly caused the death of another person; or *…intended to cause serious bodily injury and committed an act that was clearly dangerous to human life and this act caused the death of an individual.

You have prosecuted this matter here resolutely so how could it not be 1st degree (or capital murder under the Texas law) if as above?

I would suggest to you that there is NO WAY this event can be drowned in procedural motions, forgotten in a news cycle or disposed by venue change.

You do know this is an election cycle year across Texas and US; that a lib Dem is in single digit points to the sitting senator (unheard of)…in sum , no siree absolutely no brush under carpet here!

@Doc GP…yes us brimblers and the scores of brayers in Texas who disrupted the city council meeting, those who met with the Mayor and police chief, the hundreds of talkers who attended Jean’s memorial service, and the many activists in Texas who like @PLT are demanding action from the authorities….

Adam as so called in Middle Eastern religions, that is Judism, Christianity and Islam, did not literally exist. The first people–not first man–existed in Africa, near to the Equator, and were necessarily black.

White skin near to the Equator is not good.

White skin in the far north is good to enable the body to process the life necessity of Vitamin D.

Too often people on this blog are in the Religious Studies class, when they should be in the Biology class.

Both black people and white people are capable of great good and great evil. In the Western hemisphere since 1492 white people have committed great evils against black people and indigenous people.

The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

I don’t believe the police officer.

I asked Walter the other day how many witches were executed in the Salem witch trials but he could not tell me…”

It was used to refute your claim that “America is founded on the Bible”?

Does the Bible condone the killing of people suspected of practicing witchcraft aka white people obeah?

Didn’t Europeans (including those who ‘invaded’ the Americas) consider witches to be the handmaidens of a devil called Satan?

Aren’t white witches and wizards aka magicians equivalent to African witch doctors?

Should we rephrase that statement and use the word “persecution” as you extracted from Wikipedia?

Why not reread what you quoted @ John September 13, 2018 5:55 PM
“Persecution of people with albinism (sometimes abbreviated PWA[1]) is based on the belief that certain body parts of albinistic people can transmit magical powers. BTW, you raised the following matter:
“… exactly like you can’t explain now how the Europeans were able to influence Africans prior to the 15th century!!”

So here is the answer by way of a similar question:
How did ‘Africans’ influence Europeans prior to the 15th century?
Unless you do not consider Egypt as part of Mother Africa then the answer should be blowing in the sands of time.
Even your Judeo-Christian book of myths and legends is full of plagiarized stories from Kemet.
Why not compare your Ten Commandments to those making up the 42 laws of Ma’at and see the striking similarity?

Just remember, my go(o)dly friend, that your ‘legendary’ Moses was an Egyptian and not a European and his monotheistic god Yahweh was none other than Amun-Ra.

  44. Interesting Daily Mail story. So the police headquarters is across the street form the apartment building, so the officer likely did not have a long tiring commute. Had lived in the building for one month and made 2 noise complaints for two different neighbors. Was apparently working more than 8 hour shifts. Was therefore over stressing herself and when she could not fall asleep looked to blame the neighbors.

I have had a neighbor complain on my first day in the building that I put away my dishes too noisily. I have had a neighbor complain that I threw “used cooking oil” onto her concrete balcony floor. Miracle of miracles the “used cooking oil” left no stain on raw concrete, because the “used oil” was not “used oil”, but was one ounce of water that my babysitter threw and which landed on her balcony floor. The baby sitter should not have done this of course, but how does one ounce of clean water become used cooking oil? So I complained to the Board which invited us all to inspect the alleged stain. There was no stain, because clean water does not leave a stain on concrete. I told the neighbor if she did not like me living upstairs of her she was free to move elsewhere, because I was not going anywhere until I could afford to buy my own house.

She moved to Barrie. Good riddance.

    I eventually moved to Barbados.

    Lolll!!!

  46. David, the omens of transparency and due process certainly do not look promising I agree. Unfortunately police forces everywhere ALWAYS cover their asses even when it has been comprehensively and regularly proven that the cover-up is always worse than the crime. The judiciary do the same (and they are all part of the same conspiracy) as do doctors, politicians and most birds of a feather. We need to separate that reality from the racial aspect. That MAY be a factor but may not the overriding one.
