Submitted by David Comissiong, Citizen of Barbados
Towards the end of November 2012 the Honourable Minister Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam visited Barbados, and during the course of that visit Minister Farrakhan and his entourage had a meeting with then Opposition Leader, Owen Arthur, at the Opposition Leader’s office situate at Parliament building in Bridgetown. I, David Comissiong, attended that meeting as a guest of Minister Farrakhan.
During the course of that meeting Owen Arthur expressed the opinion that United States President Barack Obama had totally neglected the Caribbean region — had, in fact, done less for the Caribbean than even George Bush — and that it was Hugo Chavez and Venezuela that were making meaningful contributions to the Caribbean.
Owen Arthur also informed us that he had come to the conclusion that he had made a mistake by not having Barbados sign on to Venezuela’s Petro Caribe Energy Cooperation Agreement when he was Prime Minister of Barbados.
He went on to inform us that if his Barbados Labour Party (BLP) won the General Elections that were due in 2013 (and he became Prime Minister again) that he –Owen Seymour Arthur — would be taking Barbados into Petro Caribe.
In light of the foregoing, it is truly remarkable and bemusing to hear the same Owen Arthur now talking about signing on to Petro Caribe as being tantamount to “selling the foreign policy of Barbados”.
Furthermore, the Caribbean countries that signed on to the Petro Caribe Energy Cooperation Agreement were not doing Venezuela a favour. Rather, they were taking advantage of a very generous Venezuelan offer of deferment of payments on the purchase of energy supplies, as well as access to grants, concessionary loans, and social and economic development projects. Indeed countries such as Dominica, St Vincent and Haiti benefitted from literally dozens of developmental projects in the fields of agriculture, education, and the provision of energy-based infrastructure and facilities.
It should be noted that hardly a day passes in Venezuela without the right wing critics of Chavez lambasting Chavez for — in their words– “giving away” Venezuela’s precious resources to the Caribbean nations through the Petro Caribe Energy Cooperation Agreement !
Owen Arthur is therefore playing games with this issue — tawdry partisan political games — and should be ashamed of himself.
The fact is that as late as the end of November 2012 he was raring to sign on to Petro Caribe as a programme that was in the national interest of Barbados and did not need any further persuading on the matter !
Fortunately, there must have been a good twenty or so people in that meeting room in November 2012 — all of whom can verify the truth of what I say here.

You should consider a disclaimer at the bottom of such articles.

While we generally agree with most arguments made here

It is also clear to us that this article is an unveiled attempted to make a direct attack on OSA because of his intervention in the affairs of man, yesterday.

If Comissiong is now mixing his totherwise good social activist role with being a mouthpiece for the BLP and Mia Mottley, his cousin, the Blogmaster should help reading in so distinguishing.

We are on a Very Slippery Slope Next Stop Venezuela…

The Venezuelan people struggle to cope with the toxic effects of hyperinflation, severe debt and chronic food and medicine shortages, as Venezuela – once the wealthiest country in the region – is mired in the worst economic crisis in its history. “Venezuelans today cannot eat. You see people eating from the garbage,” says Professor Margarita Lopez Maya, Central University of Venezuela.

So how does a country boasting the world’s largest oil reserves find itself on the brink of economic ruin? It’s the country’s very history that sheds light on what has gone so drastically wrong in Venezuela today. As Chavez strived to transform the nation with what he called 21st century socialism, his populist policies began to take a more radical turn. He nationalised industries and bloated state bureaucracy at great national expense, all funded by high oil prices and unchecked borrowing. Venezuela became saddled with record-high levels of debt.

By the time of his death in March 2013, Chavez handed over both the reins of power to his handpicked successor, Nicolas Maduro. “The collapse of economic activity makes this period, from 2013 onwards, the largest recession in Western Hemisphere history – significantly larger, almost twice as large as the Great Depression of the US,” says Ricardo Hausmann, former Venezuelan minister for planning.

Venezuela is falling apart. Its economy Ruined. Its people are Hungry. Its government Corrupt. What happened? In a word, Socialism… Debbie D’Souza, a native Venezuelan and political activist, explains.

David, the answer to you question about whether Owen Arthur is a liar is contained in the video below. Do you remember this day in Parliament? This was not only the worst day in Parliament but its also the day I lost all respect and admiration for that scamp Owen Seymore Arthur.

Owen Arthur is panicking, his dirty deeds will be exposed once Mia Mottley becomes Prime Minister. We will learn about things like:-

Does OSA own any shares or owned any shares in Republic Bank and if yes, how many and how did he come to own them?
Does OSA own any shares or owned any shares in CIBC and if yes, how many and how did he come to own them?
Does OSA own any shares or owned any shares in DIGICEL and if yes, how many and how did he come to own them?
Does OSA own any shares or owned any shares in Royal Westmoreland and if yes, how many and how did he come to own them?
Does OSA own any shares or owned any shares in Port St. Charles and if yes, how many and how did he come to own them?
Does OSA own any shares or owned any shares in Port Ferdinand and if yes, how many and how did he come to own them?

  10. David

That is irrelevant! All politicians should be assumed to be liars, until proven otherwise. Nothing is ever true until they deny it – Colburn.

But in these circumstances we do not have to rely on the veracity if OSA.

There are official government documents, there is FJS as a witness . Certainly, there has not been a denial, thus far, by Mottley.

What is happening here are two possible things. One that Mottley called her cousin Comissiong, and put him to work on Arthur.

Or two, Comissiong saw an opportunity to attack Arthur because it would please Mottley

Comissiong, the political hack acting under the cover of activist. We should distinguish between these roles!

You have still not answered my question. Should articles like this not be marked?

Does OSA not have a right to intervene in defense of himself? And we have already estimated what could have happened behind the scenes, as are here again.

Comissiong, may think he is doing his cousin a favour but he risk playing into the narrative being propagated by the DLP about Mottley. This is troubling!

And you David, should be happy that we, on this rare occasion, are getting a real-time look into the political machinations of the belligerents. Not encourage Comissiong to throw sand into our eyes, like he tries to do with this article.

David Mr Blogmaster, I am getting lost amidst these charges and countercharges so I seek your help by interrogating the remarks of a few bloggers.

Is Mr Commissiong not being disingenuous. He said “… it is truly remarkable and bemusing to hear the same Owen Arthur now talking about signing on to Petro Caribe as being tantamount to “selling the foreign policy of Barbados”[…] Caribbean countries […] were taking advantage of a very generous Venezuelan offer of deferment of payments on the purchase of energy supplies, as well as access to grants, concessionary loans, and social and economic development projects.”

Mr Arthur very scandolously said that he was being offered/requested to accept that agreement with the understanding that “generous Venezuelan” millions would flow into the COFFERS of the BLP campaign….nothing suggests that other advantages could not accrue to the island…BUT he apparently didnt want to be beholding to Chavez as allegedly he and others were to CLICO.

So my question Mr Blogmaster, does Arthur’s other alleged bad acts make this alleged attempt at further corruption a) an untruth b) less egregious if true?

Mr Miller said “That ploy can only fly if MAM is arrested and charged for defrauding the Treasury between today and next Tuesday.” I wonder why but be that as it may…

The clarification I seek is a) were these taxes in fact waived for Mr Mottley while his daughter was a senior minister of govt; b) was the matter of waiver of such a large sum brought to parliament as the former PM suggested was required by statute; c) if yes to either, why are we hearing about this only now and why did the current govt not ventilate and possibly prosecute this legally ; if yes to either, how can a former AG and other senior BLP members just look pass these very serious matters of judgement and possible corruption re their presumptive PM and leader???….

How can we expect any real action from their INTEGRITY legislation? And why are rumours of base, unconscionable personal failings just mere hate filled gossip when referring to your favored candidate but grounds for vigorous indictment when about your enemy?

We saw how the political fixer from St George worked to help D Thompson be the best, corrupt vile demon that he could be but now his close association to Ms Mottley in similarly sounding ‘fixings’ are brushed off as the irrelevance of a drunkard.

Can you help the lost find reasonable acceptance in all this paling cock shiiittee flowing so freely!

Clearly the old saw that ‘An honest politician is one who after being bought, will stay bought [to his original buyer, Oh Henry]” is perfectly accurate of our very honest local pols also!

    As usual, just freaking amazing!

  14. It would be not a bad thing for Bajan politicians to write their memoires.

Our country is poorer because we never got to know the full inner workings of our politics, not the formalities.

Not only Barbados, the whole region

When you sit down and talk to these people they give a number of reasons.

These include, the protection of the party, fears of libel, the protection of their former colleagues.

As a result the population never benefited from the critical experiences of Barrow, Adams. A few might have, but that is not good enough. The same could be said for others as well, including Don Blackman, who may have interesting ‘tales’ to tell yet.

Now we have OSA willing to tells us something real and a ‘scribe’, acting as propagandist, a modern Goebbels, wants to shut him down.

We have found that most people purporting to be progressive are no more than reactionaries.

    Let Arthur speak!

  15. Now this should make the election doubly interesting, at least 6,000 more potential voters since the CCJ decision, what a thing…talk about a swing election, swing votes.

“Ventose, and what is expected to be around another 6 000 such citizens, were all smiles yesterday when checks with the Electoral and Boundaries Commission (EBC) revealed their registration as electors had been processed, making them eligible to vote.”

  16. @Pacha

    Arthur is writing his memoirs.

  17. David Comissiong monitors his submissions, see if he responds to your query.

  18. Didn’t Arthur confirm in the interview under scrutiny that there is a process that must be followed to waive taxes which includes civil servants involvement and parliament? Perhaps Caswell can shed light if he is monitoring the blog.

He said “Towards the end of November 2012 the Honourable Minister Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam visited Barbados, and during the course of that visit Minister Farrakhan and his entourage had a meeting with then Opposition Leader, Owen Arthur,”

Which means tha Minister Farrakhan was invited during the DLP/Freundel Stuart administration. In 2012 Owen Arthur was NOT the Prime Minister of Barbados.

A Simple Response: The Christians in this country are also aware that whatever evil has been done by Muslims, has also been done by Christians. We have not yet forgotten the slavery thing which went on for hundreds and hundreds of years, not for a decade or two, and which affected directly and indirectly hundreds of millions of people. Even now aren’t the Christians in the United Kingdom trying to Windrush other Christians, people such as my siblings, out of the United Kingdom, after they have put in 40, 50, 60 years of hard work?

    Evil has no religion.

Don’t try to make those who call themselves Christians out to be some sort of sweet breads. Many, many are not, and have never been.

MAM and the whole of Barbados need answers for the way they have destroyed this country for 10 years…………they have refused to discuss or take responsibility for their incompetence. Tear down and try to destroy Mia……..that is their defense of their stewardship.

My son visited his doctor recently and he told him ……..what bombshells what…….nobody aint want to hear the dems, they did not want to talk to Barbadians for 10 years so why should anyone want to listen to them now……….he said every doctor he knows want to see the back of the dlp.

It is advised that you enlighten yourself by seeing this ‘controversy’ in the same light as you did with Ms Mottley and her lack of a Legal Education Certificate from some Caribbean-based paper mill.

Just another political storm in an electoral teapot.

For any tax write-off to become legally effective/enforceable it must first obtain the approval of Cabinet and its subsequent ratification by Parliament through the laying of a negative resolution to attract the attention of the Opposition like throwing the bleeding torso of a land mammal to a shoal of hungry sharks.

So please, look to the top civil servants in the Ministry of Finance for answers for OSA knows them all.

We are sure such a tax recovery with interest would go a long way today in buying at least two garbage collecting trucks to service the West Coast.

Wouldn’t that be easy meat for the current Minister of Finance to chew on instead of the ‘dumb’ and finance-illiterate PM to make himself look like a downright clown?

Is it Ok for a Speaking crook called Carrington to rob a wheelchair-bound pensioner but not for a millionaire with political ties to seek tax concessions like Maloney or Stewart?

Ms Mottley ought to take the PM’s ‘pristine’ advice in this matter a find herself a ‘pedantic’ lawyer with an LEC.

Whom would you recommend, Dribbler? Hal G or her dad to keep things in the bloodline?

  38. What is all this talk about tax concessions? How about CLCIO then? Who got paid large lawyers fees? And, did a large warehouse in Warres / Redmans get tax concessions? How?

No need to speak in parables.

Our Prime Minister the Right Honourable Freundel Stuart said of Leroy “CLICO” Parris, “the man is not a leper, he is my friend”

And somehow tens of millions of taxpayers dollars have gone to satisfy the pensioners whose money disappeared while in the custody of CLICO.

I did not phuck with the pensioners money, so why has my tax money been used to settle that debt?

  42. The Miller

You are deliberately mischaracterizing these issues.

It cannot be to a storm in a teapot for these kinds of disclosures to be made 10 days before an election – a political storm.

Indeed, if it is to be termed a storm, it would a category 7. These issues are central to the case being made by the DLP. Not just talk. There are more than a few kinds of evidence, witnesses, on record.

They represent a significant hurdle for MAM to scale.

Seems to us that there has never been such an ironclad political case against any other party leader, in Barbados, in an election period.

Of course, it does not help your case that the BLP seems to be losing ground on other fronts as well. They have also lost ground on the economic front with their mini-budget.

This is an existential battle for MAM(A). So you can try to deny, minimize, obfuscate, as much as you like. The claims against her are going nowhere soon.

The Dems seem to feel that they have her pinned, and they are making an approach intending to drive home the deckie.
