In less than a week, a story that was for too long begging for attention became front page news and in the process won the hearts of a nation and engaged the mind of a Government. I want to recognise the work of my fellow high commissioners for a great team effort and most importantly Amelia Gentleman for her steadfastness in helping to bring this story to life. Also to JCWI, The Runnymede Trust, Bishop Wilfred Wood, Lord Ouseley and David Lammy MP for their dedication to this most worthy of causes.
We are not there yet but I am now optimistic that soon those elderly West Indians who lived in fear in the face of the possibility of detention, destitution or deportation will be able to embrace their loved ones and join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, “Free at last, Free at last, Thank God almighty, We are free at last.”

Barbadians who were employed by the Canadian passenger and cargo liners which called at Barbados in the 40’s and 50’s were granted Canadian citizenship because they were seen to have contributed to the building of Canada.I have often wondered how come the Brits never offered such a facility to the hundreds of seafarers from the Eastern and Western Caribbean who worked in particular on the Harrison Line cargo ships post WW2 and up to the 80’s.I am told that they were paid the same wage as their U.K. based colleagues.

I live in Canada, yet Canada is no shining star. Sargeant made the connect between Windrush and DACA. In Canada, they had something called ‘residential schools’ where thousands of native children were taken from their families, many never to be seen again. And their parents had been here, longer than the colonizers. More recently, we are learning that Canada, always quick to jump at accepting refugees, now has a slew of children from said refugees, who ended up in foster care, several in multiple homes and ‘their official papers’ somehow got overlooked/forgotten. Now those who >18, especially if they have a criminal record, authorities are attempting to deport them to their ‘country of birth’. A bureaucratic boondoggle.
Authorities don’t like to discuss it, because while the politicians love to be seen as ‘accepting refugees’, settling into a new country, especially if the parents have the physical and mental scars of protracted warfare, isn’t easy. And nobody wants to fund the programs to deal with these issues. Plus, it will only raise the ‘anti refugee’ chants.

My neighbour’s daughter was able to take advantage of the UK Ancestry visa which granted her the right to work in Britain because she has a British born grandparent. As one can see from the accompanying Wiki reference it is mainly used by Australians, New Zealanders, Australians, Canadians and South Africans in other words the descendants of “white” Britons who emigrated to the old British Commonwealth. It would be interesting to know how many people have taken advantage of that visa and have remained permanently in Britain, but I would think they far outnumber the black and brown people that the UK Gov’t was seeking to deport.
