Mia Mottley and Freundel Stuart represent the duopoly

โ€œLife’s but a walking shadow, a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.โ€ –
Shakespeare

The headline in one of the newspapers blazed Eye to Eye on violence supported with a picture of Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley. The immediate thought by the BU blogmaster was that the leaders of the two main political parties had joined forces in the national interest to serve as a calming influence on the country days after the Kadooment Shootings. After perusing the opening paragraph of the newspaper article such a lofty expectation was dashed. It was the usual political palaver full of sound and fury, signifying nothing!

In 1978 the great Bob Marley staged the One Love Concert that will be etched in history when he called for Michael Manley and Edward Seaga who represented the two main political parties operating in a fractious political environment at the time to shake hands. One senses that the Barbados landscape has become fractious- not to the same degree as Jamaica but trending- and there is the opportunity for a signal act by relevant parties to send a message to the population that we are Bajans first and must come together to make it work.

The contentious meeting of the Social Partnership will be held within the next 24 hours to address the call by the unions and private sector for government to engage in greater dialogue. On the agenda is the request by the unions for government to implement a coping subsidy to soften the impact of the National Social Responsibility Levy (NSRL) on public workers. The decision by the government to publicise the event (we wait to see if it happens) is a clear indication that there is distrust of the partnership by a key member. Many fear it will an opportunity for grandstanding by political participants with a few months to go until the next general election. BU is of the view there is the opportunity for the heads of the various stakeholders of the Social Partnership to publicly demonstrate to the country that despite the contentious issues on the agenda, it is ONE LOVE. Why not invite Mia Mottley and a couple leaders from the religious community to participate at tomorrow’s meeting, it would be unprecedented but viewed favorably as being in the national interest. Will NEVER happen!

Whether by accident or not, the Acting Governor of the Central bank Cleviston Haynes has scheduled a press briefing for Friday 11, 2017 at 11AM to review the performance of the Barbados economy for the first six months.ย  It promises to be an interesting 24 hours.

  1. Rosalyn Smith made the best contribution to me. The collection and policing of taxes is seriously lacking. I like the idea of retired customs officers or other officials going out there on commission to try to get who owe tax pay. Millions and millions are outstanding in tax. If half of that was in the Treasury, it would do Barbados a lot of good. Sinckler sounded weak, going all over the place. Well done to the acting top of the Central Bank for his presentation as well.

  2. Boo hoo, angela skeete……….you yardfowls were on BU bragging……..watch for what the sleeping king will do……

The unions and the private sector exposed and laid bare the naked the king and his minions, have you now realised the plan backfired?

Curse away at Charles Herbert………I am sure he does not need to do this but he is like everyone else, a Barbadian who only wants the best for the country we all have to live in.

Boo hoo……take your medicine, it was bitter for you…….the MOF is the one who got exposed as the most incompetent MOF ever!

  3. Prodigal you haven’t answered on Caswell Franklyn’s absence. Toni Moore and Herbert ignored Unity union. I would listen to Caswell before Herbert and his trade union stooges. The PM had the last word. He made it count. He and the Governor created favorable impressions.

    Commentor…no they did not.

The only impressions viewers were left with are ones of 9 years of incompetence.

    Why are yardfowls so blind.

It was plain for everyone to see, this government does not have a chance in hell of being reelected.., and it’s all their own doing,.

WW, reelection has not been the issue for most of us for some time. Economic recovery is the problem, every day we get further away from it.

As I see it, Toni’s position is the easiest to understand. The NSRL needs to be put on hold for the two months Fumble’s Fools promised to have completed a comprehensive economic plan, in consultation with the social partnership, and put that plan in motion.

We all know that deadline is impossible but the MOF set the trap for himself by stating it.

Akani’s coping subsidy while wage increases are negotiated is an impossibility at this point.

  7. Tonie Moores position is one of i want what i want and i want ut niw.
Her stubborn approach if govt should take her position would undercut rather than help the public servants
If the NSRL as tabled by the govt should bring in more revenue then the possibilty of the public servants getting a better wage increment increases. What Toni Moore refuses to realize that her stubborn approach can lead to less in the long term rather thsn more for public servants
She need to listen to economic advisors other than those who have attached themselves to the blp brigade

  8. A wonderful meeting was had yesterday.

The unions could not get all that they wanted

The private sector could not get all they wanted

The government had to stand its ground because bills have to paid and revenue has to raised

So when you pause NSRL , VAT and whatever else……how is the shortfall in revenue going come from ???

The millions $$$$$$ spent on GREEDLAND ?????

The millions $$$$$$$ spent on EDUTECH ????

The millions $$$$$$ spent on DODDS ?????

Those projects are still being paid for ….,in an economic situation of declining revenue collection and inflows

Get real and give the measures some time to work

The majority of Bajans realise that ……

Unless you are Miller , Prodigirl , Enuff and other doomsayers…….

  9. BARBADOS’ ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ง most esteemed leader

The Honorable Prime Minister Freundel Jerome Stuart in a classic display oratorical wizardry

again demonstrated to the world that he has intellectual and intestinal fortitude to take and conquer

the dishonest elements that resides in the bosom of the Private Sector Association, BWU & NUPW

Not even the Grand Ole Duke of York…….though present for the day entire meeting…….dared raised his voice or interject at anytime

Barbadians need to ask Sir Roy Trotman …….why he remained tight lipped ……though he was there ?????

In light of how he once as head of the BWU he vehemently attacked the Private Sector ……with the Royal Shop and Sandy Lane saga !!!

He too must have been ‘ alarmed ‘ like most rational thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ Bajans…….to see the PSA and BWU fighting against the Government of Barbados ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ง to save…..,JOBS !!!

Oh what a CRUEL …. twist of Fate …..

Thankfully…..Cedric Murrell and CTUSAB ………kept their heads on !!!!!

  10. Biggest Joke of the meeting is the government not having an UP-TO-DATE, COMPREHENSIVE, DETAILED economic plan for Barbados in hand, ….when they just completed a national budget and estimates, and after having received reports from the IMF, Central Bank, various committees, …and their hoards of Public servants in the ministry.

On what basic did they make decisions about taxes? … if they cannot answer SIMPLE questions from the union?
Why would it take so long to complete preparations to commence the talks that had been promised?

This government is comprised of the most incompetent jackasses that one can conceivably imagine. They spent 9 years doing complete shiite, wasting money, selling out Barbados for bribes … to now come at the last hour challenging others to come up with a ‘solution’ to the ‘problem’ in six months or shut up….

The single greatest ‘problem’ with our economics…… Witless Jackasses are running things.
The FIRST STEP in any solution.

The PM’s wrap-up was tasteless, uninspiring, juvenile, and it CLEARLY demonstrates that under his leadership, we are destined for DEATH….

    Get rid of the jackasses….ASAP.

This is another waste of vital time.
What is needed is a COMPLETE NATIONAL SHUTDOWN until elections are called.

You can play the race card to the cows come home but ain’t going to work this time. You bastards tricked the good natured bajan public with funny economic numbers and iPads, beads and trinkets but you will not be that lucky again in 17/18 no matter how much you try make the private sector and minorities the villains, Bajans done work out that wunna are PISS POOR and could not manage a puss up in a brewery. Failures.

  13. @ David
The man is a low-grade disgrace as a leader…. even as a person.

What manner of political party would tolerate such an attitude for nine years after KNOWING from the very beginning (ref the Eager 11) that he was TOTALLY unsuitable for the role?

What manner of country would tolerate such a political party for so long…

    BBBBBBBs….

Bushman….now that bajans have seen and heard the incompetent wastes in their entirety on national TV, sitting in the people’s parliament drawing salaries and perks every month for doing precious little, spending and wasting taxpayers money wildly, giving the money away to minority crooks, and will still receive pensions at taxpayer’s expense at the end of their destruction of the people and country.

A national shutdown is quite suitable at this time…..

..bajans have seen with their own two eyes that 5 more years of these useless fools will see most of them homeless on the streets and starving…

It was not rumor and gossip..they saw them all on TV, could read their body language, see their arrogance, nonchalance and lack of care for any suffering they will cause the majority who they need to elect them.

They refused to say what they did with the first introduced NSRL tax collected ftom Sept 1 last year, but added another 8% on the tax to collect free money, instead of collecting taxes already owed for the last 15 or 20 years.

..but they always got money to fete and throw parties and celebrations.

They dont deserve not one seat.

  16. Speak of arrogsnce.still cannot understand how Toni Moore logic and willingness to throw public servants under the bus can be applauded
Her illogical thinking of giving up govt proposal a propsal which would guarantee jobs and wages increased for the public servants boggles the mind

  17. Chuckle……The PM has won, by bamboozling the unions to accept a 2 month moratorium on any actions and at the end of it, another meeting, live again will be held where he will kick the bucket further down the road.

The only one who realized what the play was, was Charles Herbert who could only wait for the unions to act.

Hopefully on sober reflection Toni will realise the Princes’ hand at play and decide on a different course of action.

The PMs sole purpose at present is to ride out his 5 years with the expectation of another 5 which he may very well get based on his ability to win his plays so easily.

  18. The private sector has already acted. Check the Central Bank report 1.net foreign capital infows 2. the level of international reserves, and 3.the liquidity level in the banking sector and the lack of interest in government securities.

  19. Armando! Who played the race card for sure the hypocrisy that was shown when those two entities march left nothing much desirable to think of. Here Toni Moore saying that the workers in the private sector under her watch is being represented at yesterday meeting. What a load of horse sh.it. if that is so how come she seldoms pick teet about the unfair disadvantange dolled out to workers in the private sector
Toni Moore needs not one dose but many doses of reality doses which would bring common sense and truthfulness to her mind

  20. David

Correct and as FB keeps saying, nothing will happen under this govt of Stuart.

One starts to feel sorry for Sinckler as we are now getting the impression that his hands are tied by the PM who sees the greater political picture as opposed to doing what is correct for the country that will damage his agenda.

  21. Some will say the DLP’s position was noble not wanting to send home public sector workers but now there is the reality that despite consistently high revenue collection it has been unable to effectively manage expenditure. Bear in mind even with the partial rollout of the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) collecting taxes has been a challenge.

  28. What Owen says is insignificant when it comes to barbados debt. He was the one who had promised Barbadians that Inder his watch they will be a rainy day savings and now the rain is pouring not even an umbrella was left by his adminstration to protect barbadians from the rain
Furthermore he is still fuming at the mouth because barbadians rejected his Privatisation quick fix and in another effort to prove himself right he is on a last ditch effort with another recommendation to send Barbados to the IMF one which barbadians will reject
His mouthings are only a reflection of what he prefers even though barbadians are saying NO
Oh btw was it not under his watch in good times when reserves fell that he borrowed at high interest rate to shore them up which now in all probablity has contributed to barbados burdensome debt
Also not to forget the wastage and over spending on his watch things that OSA conviently forgets as negatives factored into barbados present debt

  32. Retribution

You are a loss soul !

    So too the BLP !

If you want to prove me wrong ……answer these questions :

Does George Payne still have Edmund Hinkson in the High Court for calling him a THEIF ????
Has the High Court of Barbados decided the case about Maria Agard expulsion from the BLP as yet ?????
Is the BLP truly UNITED ????

4 Do Bajans really take the BLP moojuns and minions like you seriously…..knowing the decisions on those 2 interesting cases will come before general elections ???

You better be careful what you ask for ……JACKASS !!!

Over to you on the questions above ……

  33. Retribution

Every rational thinking Bajan ( except you of course ) is waiting with bated breath to see if George Payne as Chairman of the BLP will drop the case against Hinkson……to prove that Hinkson was CORRECT in calling him …….a BIG nasty THEIF !!!

Oh what a nasty BLP mess ……of which …….Retribution is the CHIEF……bottle washer !!!!

  34. You have been coaxed out of semi retirement? You have a lot of work to do. Good luck!

Btw, if he is found to be a tief he will join Michael Carrington, in good company with the speaker! Note the common s, a sign of deliberate disrespect.

  35. Retribution whether govt go or stays. The debt has to be paid as articulated by govt at the meeting yesterday
What should be more of concern to you and be asking Mottley what plans she has in mind to paying down the debt
Her closed lip policy on this issue would not score her any political points when the election bell rings
Most now are aware of the fact that in a nation of 275thousand it takes more than a twenty thousand marching band to win an election

  36. David

A good try at coming to Retribution assistance !

But it just doesn’t cut it !

Michael Carrington honored his obligations to his client as ordered by the Court.

What ever reasons Michael Carrington failed to honor them before the Court were never revealed by Carrington nor the Court .

If you knew why …..then tell us

But George Payne can still drop his case against Hinson !

The Court has not determined the case as yet

    Think seriously about that !!!!!

  37. That should read ” before the Court intervened “

  38. Yesterday meeting was also a reflection of the gawdflies and traitors like Charles Herbert that are associated to Mottley political strings
If a dlp supporter had use such damaging langauage like the words of Herbert which meant harm and devastation
Mia Mottley would have envision with much angst and provacation a willingness to have a march against govt or even another call for Stuart to resign
However she had decided to keep all her rotten sheep in the fold those of Charles Herbert breeding to ensure her political war chest would be lacking for nothing
Her patriotism should be placed under a microscope as a leader and as one whose aspirations to be leader
when she puts traitors and demagous before barbados security and best interest

  40. Herbert has stated what everyone including the operatives know………..

    Christina Smith Created : 12 August 2017
    Barbados News
Chairman of the Barbados Private Sector Association (BPSA), Charles Herbert

The private sector has been pleading with the Stuart-led administration for dialogue for the last two months and on Friday they, along with the other social partners finally got their wish.

However, Chairman of the Barbados Private Sector Association (BPSA), Charles Herbert is of the view that any real progress or results from the discussions are not going to materialize. Further to that Herbert believes instead of making any adjustments to fiscal policies, Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Freundel Stuart will drag out dialogue until the 2018 General Elections are called.

He spoke to Loop News after the conclusion of the Social Partnership meeting on Friday after more than six hours of discussions with the union movement, government ministers and private sector heads.Out of the meeting it was decided that the sub-committees of the Social Partnership would continue consultation, a decision Herbert said the private sector was โ€œvery disappointedโ€ about.

โ€œI donโ€™t think that we had the dialogue and responses from government that we wanted and we think that the dialogue that they are promising going forward is with their Senior technocrats and the government ministers are still refusing to have dialogue directly with the social partners. So we are very disappointed.โ€

Herbertโ€™s position no doubt stems from the last round of consultations with the sub-committee of the Social Partnership which saw the private sector compile a list of recommendations for government to be used in the planning of the May 2017 budget, none of which were ever taken into consideration.

He said the partners will proceed with the sub-committee meetings as scheduled but he does not believe that the framework is one that is “geared for success”. When asked if he believed government would stretch out the dialogue until the next general elections, Herbert said โ€œabsolutelyโ€, adding there was not much the private sector could do at this point.

โ€œGovernment has a right to make decisions and there isnโ€™t much we can do. Ultimately itโ€™s a political matter. We have shown them the desire for dialogue and the willingness to corporate.โ€

President of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), Akanni McDowall, said he believed consultations will be a โ€œvery long and difficult processโ€ but the unions will continue to fight for their members. McDowall added the โ€œpolitical gameโ€ of government will not stop the union from agitating for public servants.

  41. If they sell Hilton Barbados and the Barbados National Terminal Company Limited (BNTCL) .

If they start the Hyatt with overseas money.

If they privatize GAIA and the Bridgetown port

…… the DLP will win the next election and I will return to Barbados to spend my $Can pension.

  42. Herbert is a bold faced liar and one who cannot be trusted with pen and paper. Putting pen and paper in Herbert hands is an invite for social destruction.

Everything is in the unions hands, they get to decide when they have had enough.

They should make that decision themselves and not be coached or rushed by the private sector, who still do not want to see their employees unionized or being paid decent, liveable salaries, above the slave like minimum wage.

The unions have the numbers on their side.

  44. The meeting yesterday achieved nothing, the three sides dug in and never yielded. We can safely say the social partnership is dead under the Stuart government.

When ya fail to plan, ya plan to fail.

  46. The Unionsand the so called Head if tge Private sector had more than twelve gours if consultation.
The NSRl is law and the Unions and Private sector only reason for further consultation is to pick the flesh off till there is nothing but bones left.
What govt needs to do is call a meeting of all govt employees and let them decide on rather going forward they prefer the NSRL or job losses
That process would cut out the middle man tactics those of stalling and kicking the can up and down the political field. Enough is enough

  47. Chuckle…..these operatives are well coached…..one must give them credit for continuing to spout baseless nonsense about the misguided budget and the doomed NSRL.
