Breaking the bonds of Oppression: Leaders issue communiqué at conclusion of USPG International Consultation

MANILA, Philippines – Forty Anglican leaders representing 31 countries convened in Manila recently for USPG’s (United Society Partners in the Gospel) fifth International Consultation, culminating in a jointly signed communiqué. Meeting under the theme “Breaking the Chains of Injustice: Reimagining Missional Theologies Today”, the delegates examined global issues surrounding language, land and legacy.

In the communiqué the leaders call on the wider Anglican Communion to “discern how their histories and identities are entangled with questions around language, land and legacy.” They invite the wider Church to express solidarity by “Praying with and forcommunities that struggle for land, language and life, and integrate these concerns into worship and intercession. Visiting and learning from Indigenous, Afro-descendant, migrant and other marginalised communities where Christ’s voice is heard in struggle.” They also call on the wider church to review investments, landholdings, partnerships and curricula to ensure alignment with the Gospel’s call to break every chain of injustice.

The communiqué draws inspiration from the banig – a Filipino woven mat crafted by the often-unseen labour of women – a metaphor for making visible experiences that are often forgotten. The leaders state: “Bearing the banig in mind, we seek to reweave our missional imagination through believing, belonging and being doers of the word.”

The leaders committed to develop theologies where proclamation and prophetic witness are intertwined; honour land as a gift and partner from God in mission; liberate theological language; own and transform legacy through truth-telling; stand in solidarity with churches who resist current empires; reimagine formation and partnership.

The Consultation was hosted by the Episcopal Church in the Philippines (ECP) and the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI) and included a message from the Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally.

The Revd Canon Dr Duncan Dormor, General Secretary, USPG said:

“This was an historic gathering: At a time of significant change in the global order, it was a huge privilege to be with leaders from across the Communion reflecting theologically on the ways in which identity and culture have been deeply shaped by injustices associated with land, language and legacies. In outlining a critical role for the Church today, it was inspiring to see so many primates and other leaders from such different contexts and cultures express their unity and solidarity throughout the Consultation and in the bold commitments of this communiqué.”

The Revd Canon Dr Peniel Rajkumar, Theologian and Director of Global Mission at USPG said: “This communiqué captures both the spirit as well as the substance of our rich gathering in Manila. It affirms the fact that reimagining our mission theologies is imperative in a global context where the way in which we envision and embody our theologies needs to be rooted in courage, creativity and commitment. Our time together not only fed our minds but also freed them to rethink mission. It is in this spirit that we commend this communique to all the partners that God provides, so that we can walk the talk of justice with renewed solidarity and rejuvenated hope.”

  1. NICE PIECE!!! BUT *SINCERELY* WRONG ON EVERY LEVEL – FOR THE CURRENT 21ST CENTURY CHURCH MODEL SYSTEM, IN EVERY ASPECT OF RELIGIOSITY, ACROSS THIS PLANET, (THAT IS ALREADY ON LIFE-SUPPORT) – AS IT NEARS THE MOMENT WHEN YESHUA THE MESSIAH IS ABOUT TO PULL THE PLUG ON TIME, & HASTEN ON ETERNITY @PACE – HEAVEN HELP CHURCH LEADERS WHO HAVE THIS DUBIOUS NOTION THAT THEY WILL BE ABLE TO REVERSE 6000 YEARS (almost) OF BAKED IN SIN & TRANSGRESSION

I got up this mornin’ (“BLESS GOD”), for another day, after a “DREAM” or a “VISION” that woke me up (‘AS I SAID TO WIFEY’*) – “why would I be dreamin’ of “OVERTHROWING” the table in the church with all that was upon it because of the madness I was seeing & no one there would listen to reason?”

I GOT UP WITH A WEIGHT OF REALIZATION ON ME THAT THE SOLIPSISTICISM THAT RElieGION CARRIES TODAY CANNOT MAKE EVEN A SMALL DENT IN THE LEAD CANOPY OF MODERN SOCIO-RELIGIO THEATRICS & NOW THIS* PIECE

    #LetUsSeeTheRelevance

The “ANCIENT GOSPEL PROPHET” gave us the “MANDATE” for the work of the church:

    (1) To loose the bonds of wickedness
    (2) To undo the heavy burdens
    (3) To let the oppressed go free
    (4) To break every yoke (Isaiah 58:6)

THIS IS A 4-PART-PROCESS HOUSED IN SIMPLICITY THAT MY (9) YR OLD GRANDSON COULD UNDERSTAND – THEN THE PROPHET OPINED THAT THESE WOULD BE THE BLESSINGS THAT WOULD FOLLOW:

    (5) Your light will break forth like the dawn (Isaiah 58:8)
    (6) Your healing will come quickly
    (7) The Lord will guide you continually & satisfy your soul in drought
    (8) You’ll be like a well-watered garden, a spring whose waters never fail (Isaiah 58:11)
    (9) You will rebuild ancient ruins & be called “Repairer of the Breach” (Isaiah 58:12)
    (10) The SABBATH* will be a DELIGHT*

IT IS ALMOST AS IF THE PROPHET IS GIVING US THE COMMANDMENTS ON 2-TABLETS** OF STONE: THE 1ST [4] ON ONE TABLET & THE LAST [6] ON THE OTHER

#YESHUA THE MESSIAH*”, then gives us “NEW TESTAMENT ECHOES”, where HE* openly declares that the “FULFILLMENT OF THIS VISION” in (Luke 4:18-19), “POINTS” to HIM* being the “ONE” who came to “PROCLAIM LIBERTY TO THE CAPTIVES” & “TO SET THE OPPRESSED FREE” – a direct fulfillment of Isaiah 58’s call to “JUSTICE & MERCY”!!!

According to the “HISTORICAL” benchmarks, “THE PROTESTANT ENGLISH REFORMATION” – “broke the “BAND OF WICKEDNESS” off the backs of the poor & marginalized”, in “FEUDAL ENGLAND” _ many of those “SHACKLES” violently removed by the “DIVINE PANDEMIC PESTILENCE OF THE BLACK DEATH”!!!

“JOHN WYCLIFFE” (the morning star of the Reformation) proclaimed in 14th century England, (as I have often cited throughout the years): “IN THE END TRUTH SHALL PREVAIL”!!!

This is a powerful “FRAMING” (ibid, BLOGMASTER*), drawing directly from the language of Isaiah 58. However, when we examine the historical evidence, the reality is far more “COMPLEX” & reveals a very deep “PARADOX”…

    #LetUsExamineTheEvidence

The Reformation did not simply “LIBERATE THE POOR”; it “DISMANTLED” one system of support &, over decades, forced the “CREATION” of another. The “BANDS OF WICKEDNESS” were a complex weave of “CATHOLIC CHARITY”, “FEUDAL OBLIGATION”, & MONASTIC HOSPITALITY” – however, breaking them caused immense social dislocation, before new forms of relief could be established!!!

The #ProtestantEnglishReformation, particularly under King Henry VIII, shattered this ancient “FRAMEWORK”. The critical act was the “DISSOLUTION OF THE MONASTERIES from (1536 – 1539)!!!

This “ACT” of dissolving the monasteries & later the “CHANTRIES” & “RELIGIOUS FRATERNITIES”, & the “CROWN” confiscating their lands, buildings, & wealth – was an act that is described by one historian as creating a “SOCIAL DISASTER OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS”, as it “rendered thousands of the poor & elderly without a home or shelter”, & “denied the country of much of the medical aid that had been offered by the church”!!!

    SEE: https://core-varnish-new.prod.aop.cambridge.org/core/books/abs/poor-relief-in-england-13501600/new-ideas-and-new-policies-c-15301553/CF164B19A2C74DDBAFA1B88622FC9288

The creation of a “NEW CLASS OF POOR” augmented the destruction of this “SAFETY NET” coincided with other massive economic changes, including the shift to “SHEEP FARMING”, which displaced “AGRICULTURAL WORKERS”. This created a new, vast, & “MOBILE” class of “LANDLESS & UNOCCUPIED” men… “COMPELLED” to seek their living where they could,” who were then “BRANDED AS VAGRANTS” & “VAGABONDS”. The old “bands” that had held society together were violently cut, leaving the poor unbound & adrift!!!

So as “THE NEW STATE STEPS IN” (#NewBands) were formed – where the “STATE”, having destroyed the old system, was forced to build a new one & it did so not out of pure “PHILANTROPHY”, but out of sheer “NECESSITY” to address the social upheaval it had helped create!!!

THIS IS THE FEAR THAT MOST HAVE ON 21ST CENTURY EARTH – WHERE THE CONCEPT OF BETTER THE #devil YOU KNOW – WHICH PROVES OXYMORONIC IN THE END, AS CAN BE SEEN EVEN NOW IN AMERIKKKA & ELSEWHERE & (if it hasn’t yet, #StayTuned)

From “CHURCH 2 STATE (& #Parish), the responsibility for the poor was transferred from the church to the “CIVIL” authorities!!!

Parishes, the only administrative bodies that still spanned the country, were made the new units of implementation. The new system was increasingly “SECULARIZED”, operated by “PRIVATE GOVERNORS” or civic bodies rather than the church”…

A #DualSystem of “PUNISHMENT & RELIEF” with the new “BANDS” forged in the period of the “TUDOR POOR LAWS” – “A DECREPIT SYSTEM THAT WAS JANUS-FACED”, to say the least!!!

For the “ABLE-BODIED” who were basically (“THE UNDESERVING”), the “POOR LAWS” were brutal ( A TREND THAT IS RAISING IT HEAD IN AMERIKKKA & THE UK)!!!

Early statutes focused on punishing “BEGGARS & VAGABONDS”, with “WHIPPINGS”, “BRANDING”, & even “EXECUTION” for repeated offenses!!!

The goal was to “CONTROL” the “MENACE TO SOCIETY” that the displaced poor now represented & this prevailing attitude “MORPHED” into the “GREATEST” travesty of medieval times & “FOR ALL TIME” – into what can only be described as the “TRANS-ATLANTIC SLAVE WAR” against “BLACK HUMAN BEINGS” as socioeconomic “(s)EXPLOITED CAPITAL”!!!

For the “WEAK, IMPOTENT POOR” -( #TheDeserving), as it’s cited today, for those “DEEMED” genuinely “INCAPABLE OF WORK”: old folks, the sick, & orphans, the state gradually built a system of relief!!!

The 1536 Act, influenced by progressive European models, began to formalize this…

By the end of the century, the “ELIZABETHAN POOR LAWS” of (1597 & 1601) codified a “NATIONAL SYSTEM” funded by a compulsory “POOR RATE” (#LocalTax), overseen by parish officials, & providing for the “SETTING THE POOR TO WORK”…

This paradox of liberation & social control became the new “MORAL FRAMEWORK”, where the Reformation also brought a new “CULTURAL” emphasis on “HARD WORK” & “MORAL DISCIPLINE”…

Almshouses were set up. They expected their residents to work & conform to strict behavioral standards . The new “BANDS” were not just about providing relief, but about “CONTROLLING” & “REFORMING” the poor – a quest that is still evident 400 years+ on – in 21st century Britain!!!

So, did the “REFORMATION” – “BREAK THE BANDS OF WICKEDNESS”???

  2. The Anglican Church standing on the side of marginalized communities is the same as an arsonist setting one’s house on fire and then turning up as a fireman.

Despite the religious cleavages of the writer, existent even after the Church acting as fireman burnt down the house of the Afrikan, but in Black face as above, returns to the scene of the crime pretending to be a fireman.

Like Black Stalin, weeee say bun dem!
