Each day, as this saga unfolds, more and more of the innocence of Barbadian society gets destroyed. Some Barbadians, who are thinking for themselves, have already raced ahead to recognize that CLICO is just the tip of a national iceberg. The hard-earned money of Barbadian taxpayers has been receiving similar treatment for the last 30 years also Walter Blackman

The BU household agrees with pundits who suggest irreparable harm has been done to the legacy of the late Prime Minister David Thompson caused by the recent revelations contained in the CLICO Final Forensic Report unsealed by Justice William Chandler. Before the CLICO meltdown many Barbadians were prepared to give credit to Thompson for his Families First Campaign and other people centric initiatives. He promulgated the view “Family values are crucial and the role of fathers and mothers is vital to children’s development.” What a noble effort by the late Prime Minister Thompson which sadly appears to be the usual political rhetoric.

Now that the public persona of the late David Thompson has been shattered to smithereens a pandora’s box of questions have to be asked and answered. Monies paid by CLICO Barbados to the Families First Account were managed by the late David Thompson. However it is inconceivable that he and he alone had oversight for the slush fund. Of greater interest is the need to perform an audit to identify inflows to the account from CLICO and other contributors from Barbados and the Caribbean.

Woe is we!

  1. The fake secret IMF deal “document” should have been enough to show Barbadians the character we were dealing with.

Oh the irony of chequegate. God doan like ugly.

  2. His is the name that this admiinistration sought to preserve in the memory of Barbadians by way of an annual football tournament, all the while ignoring the plight of and its obligations to Beautify Barbados workers, NCC workers NHC workers. While they tried to foist this common criminal upon this country they facilitated their efforts by slashing the monies budgeted for the QEH. How does one measure the level of suffering wrought upon the poor and the under privileged, all in the name of care and compassion?

  3. Lessons learned: thief when you are the speaker of the House; thief when you are a sitting Prime Minister; thief when you can hold the hands of those (Fumble) will take over and make them promise to protect your “good”name and your “friends”; and lastly thief when you know that NO ONE around in the DLP ot BLP can do any thing about it because of their dirty tiefing hands too!!

By the way are we going to still place David’s name on the St. John Polyclinic?

  4. What would E. Walton Barrow say if he could see this mess. This whole mess is getting filthier as the days go by. Have to agree with the calypsonian, Politicians mekking bare mock sport at the people. All I can do is SMH. Only in Barbados can this situation occur. So very sad.

  5. Has anyone noticed the silence of the Opposition regarding the final Clico report? Owen was quick to defend Freundel in the Carrington matter so to speak. Mia, and The Department of Public Prosecutions haven’t commented (they all dirty). So, when this storm passes, it will be business as usual on the island.

Since there has been little public clamor except on the blog’s, at the rum shops, bus stops, or water coolers. I would say generally we deserve what we get, and no one should feel the sorrier for us.

If ever there was a time for a 3rd party to form and step up, now would be the time. Not a party of misfits, or made up from the other two, but a legitimate one with a reform platform! Three years is not a long time in the political world, and there’s enough fodor to mount serious opposition.

  6. Don’t agree with you Anne. Its worse in Guyana and Trinidad and to a lesser degree in all Caricom.See how Guyana and Trinidad are spending billions on middle and lower income housing now that they are both in election mode. You must understand there are those of us who saw thru David Thompson crookery and treachery all the way back in 1987.Ask Freundel where is the St John Development Plan he spoke of in support of Thompson in the by election in ’87.Ask Stuart why he took over Urban so he can control the largesse in building homes at Grotto for the Select who will vote for him in St Michael South. All thieves,no broughtupsy. Not accustom to anything so they grab at everything. All barefoot scumbags of the Democratic Labour Party. And the leadership of the BLP just as rotten.

David, good call re this ‘Family First Fund’.

I recall he had some high priced US political talent as the lead on that and as schemes go it had the same feel as those seen in US: pure political theater of smoke and mirrors .

The question was posed (Lemuel) whether a polyclinic will still be named after David. No, of course.

But more than that there is precedent in other countries where the names of famous people have been removed from places carrying their names, or statues taken down, when evidence of their gross misconduct/criminality has been uncovered.

A commemorative naming is done due to the public respect and honor the individual engendered. It’s done to maintain that honor into perpetuity.

When that honor is proven to be falsely gained then there can be no question that there is nothing to maintain into perpetuity.

Whether we get to the bottom of this whole debacle or not the name of David Thompson CANNOT be spoken with any reverence again.

It must be removed and the man shown for what we have now seen that he was.

Someone also asked what would be situation if Thomspon was still alive. Interesting question.

I can only look at it as Tom Adams did. Old antique or newly purchased just one clean shot.

I am deeply saddened to have to say that but his deceitful, amoral behaviour cuts deep.

Does anyone really expect DLP parliamentarians to come out and speak out about this mess. In order to do so, they would have to come out and say that they did not benefit from CLICO money in their election campaigns but who would believe them. It is as simple as this: they could probably say that they had no knowledge that the funds, which helped to secure their election, were pilfered; or they knew and didn’t care as long as they had money for their campaigns; or worse yet, they were reckless by not knowing and not wanting to know where the money came from as long as they got some.

In any event, all of them are compromised by their association with the suspect, who now cannot be brought to justice.

  11. Caswell

Even if Thompson were alive there would be no bringing to ‘justice’ or just us. Be careful, maybe justice has already been rendered!

Excellent comment indicating your intellectual and political perspicacity.

We shall see if the incestuous political class of kith and kin closes rank on this one as it has done with the Carrion(g)ton affair.
We shall see if the Opposition is prepared to table a motion of no confidence in the deputy Speaker when she has to fill in for the constantly ill Carrington.
We shall see if the encumbered limbs of the Fourth Estate have been cut off to save the financial heart of its potentially unemployable journalists or is prepared to carry the fight against the principalities of evil in high places in its quest to live up to the David (BU)’s ‘legitimately’ plagiarized motto of going after the causes that lacks assistance.

Will the most selling and superficially well-read newspaper with no major local strings attached fervently seek out the views of Owen Seymour Arthur and other ‘disinterested’ parties to this whole CLICO fiasco of a debacle? Or can we expect a “No Comment’ reaction from his ilk because Mia’s direct involvement has not been highlighted in the CLICO Forensic Report, albeit incestuously indirectly through an act of a man-made god called mother?

Can the discerning well-educated but poorly informed chattering class of the Bajan intelligentsia expect a Sunday Sun spread filled with intelligent contributions from those who have benefited from State-funded “free” education worthy of the impartially partisan assessment from the “BLPNationNewspaper”?

  13. This writer was among a group of people which warned David Thompson, in a heated business meeting, a meeting in which guns were brought with an intention to use, by the other side, that his association with Parris, Duprey and CLICO was to be the bane of him.

Of course, it could not be foreseen that he would be here.

More importantly, in political theatre it is always difficult to remove a suckling pig from a teat. For money is the mother’s milk of politics. And we were not then offering any replacement of that nutriment. Just making a moral case. In politics notions of right and wrong are most times quaint. LOL

  14. FAMILIES FIRST: innocent policyholders and pensioners, PAY THEM FIRST.

  15. There is no question that these vultures who now control our way of life is banking on the docile nature for which we are known to take them safely over the hurdle this CLICO master con has presented. If Barbadians refuse to take to the streets in massive numbers over this I say we should all stop complaining, for we would have shown them that nineteen fifty one for us represents the acceptance of adults suffering. …and we children too.

  16. Imagine a caller to Brasstacks ask where the Forensic Report can be accessed online and David Ellis said he will try to have it posted online. Several days later VOB cannot see it proper to update its website. Further he must know the report link was posted by the Nation newspaper; a sister company. Not BU does not give a rats ass if he does not feel inclined to mention the link can be views on BU and on FB.

  18. @David “many Barbadians were prepared to give credit to Thompson for his Families First Campaign.”

David Thompson’s Families First was all abut putting HIS FAMILY FIRST.

Just like “the fatted calf will be slaughtered and shared” was all about his family, his friends and his party members.

The slaughtered fatted calf was we the taxpayers, and yes indeed we have been financially slaughtered, and we have not received a share of the feast.

We must really stop letting politicians (living or dead) and other scamps and scamsters fool us.

Now the facts are out on what we all knew about the thieving dead rat let’s hope that surmountable pressure is place on the other rats to squeal. The silent immoral prime minister called a pilfering crook like Parris is friend. He needs to be investigated to ascertain how far that friendship goes. The judicial mananger should be paid more to investigate the trail of money. ALL THE CROOKED STINKING WUTLESS INDIFFERENT BRUTES need to be exposed. David Thompson was nothing more than an appearing honest thief. His quiet wife is no different she is also heavily involve in the corrupt millions she is enjoying. If this does not become a criminal matter than gaw blimah I will ask the whole of Barbados to do whatever the shite they like in breaking every law.

  22. In all of this, what is the role of the Workers unions , which represents many of the same people who have been fleeced by CLICO, aided and abeted by David Thompson.
Are the unions, a creature of the same political class who are installing armour plating around the white collar criminals in this country.
    The Mafia, Caribbean style.

All these DLP rats are slimy. I hope the processbof justice will see Parris end up like Madoff and Stanford. I know once court proceddings find his ass guilty and Dodds awaits he will squeal like a the rat he is. THEN THE CROOKED PARTIES OF TE DLP AND BLP CAN FINALLY feel what the peasant class has been enduring for years. I want there asses locked to shite up.

  25. We deify politicians then accuse them of behaving like deities. Here is a situation that requires police action and we should be marching outside the DPP/Cabinet/Parliament demanding arrests be made but intead we are calling for a political response-a no confidence motion. Piss in muh pocket!!!

  26. Imagine the effect all of this has on our international business standings and the view taken of what has transpired by the likes of the IMF and International credit rating agencies. All of this is being watched. It is now up to the PM and the GOB to show some leadership on this and pursue corrective action. If they don’t then it is up to the leader of the opposition to pursue it with vigor in the house. If nothing is done it will leave a gigantic black cloud over the integrity of Barbaods for many years to come.

Why do we keep wishing for a 3rd Party? Barbados, since 1961 has always had a 3rd Political party. Grant you it may be , nominally , in suspended animation, but nevertheless wield great power and call many a shot, while operating backstage like the Master Puppeteer at a Circus Performance, pulling the strings of the other two political parties, which one of the great benefactors of political wheeling and dealing, has referred to as PIGs.

I agree totally with that assessment of the negative effects and consequences the whole handling of the CLICO affair by the Authorities is having and will continue have on the image of poor but once proud Barbados.
The constant downgrades is just the tip of the iceberg or the howling winds before the direct impact of the perfect storm.

Unless this administration changes the “D” in DLP from ‘Destructive’ to ‘Deliverable” the country’s standing in the international business circles as a ‘trusted’ jurisdiction will take a massive hit and an irreversible reputation as a dirty-kept home for peddlers of fraud and a ‘haven’ for those international financial criminals looking for a washing machine to stash their ill-gotten gains with the complicit approval of corrupt Bajan politicians who have no compunctions about keeping friends of ill-repute and protecting their leprous pals from the tied hands of the rule of law.

Here is the Marcos’ legacy as described on Wikipedia:

“The Marcos family and their cronies looted so much wealth from the country that to this day investigators have difficulty determining precisely how many billions of dollars were stolen.[94] It is estimated that Marcos alone stole at least $10 billion from the Philippine treasury.[95][96][97][98] Adjusted for inflation, this would be equivalent to about $21.6 billion or almost 1 trillion Philippine Pesos in 2014.[99]

Today, Filipino citizens are still paying the price on public debts incurred during Marcos’ administration, with ongoing interest payments on the loan schedule by the Philippine government estimated to last until 2025 – 59 years after Marcos assumed office and 39 years after he was kicked out……”
