Ambulance shortage - photo credit: Advocate newspaper
Ambulance shortage – photo credit: Advocate newspaper

I have been waiting to see if any of the BU posters will at least post something on this very serious problem we have with our health care system. But as usual no one has come forward as yet.

Recently I was at Sandy Crest where there were two patients who needed to get to the QEH asap. The staff were calling around for ambulances and not one could be found. Finally one was located and it took the first patient to the hospital. The next patient was going into cardiac arrest and every attempt to find another ambulance was in vain. I asked if the first ambulance could come back and take the patient to the QEH and was told that it was no longer available. You could hear the frantic calls by the doctors to the QEH about the patient was in a terrible state. He needed to get to ICU ASAP but no one could find an ambulance. I read in the papers recently about the death of a patient who couldn’t get an ambulance to take her to the hospital while her family watched her painful death.

I heard on a call in program about another incident where someone’s family was in ICU and the drip had run dry. The family member asked if another drip was needed. The reply was that they have the drip but not the medication to put into the drip. This was another ICU case. The family member frantically called around and found the medication at Sandy Crest, bought it and took it back to the QEH. This caller said she had tears in her eyes.

Our  health care has been compromised. The lack of ambulances are due to the lack of gurneys so the ambulance drivers report to work and play dominoes.  How can any government stand up and broadcast to the world that they are training for Ebola and yet there are no ambulances specially outfitted.

Barbadians are being asked to pay for their health care. What are they getting for their money? Death because of lack of ambulances and critical drugs?  This is very serious and many of you posters probably do not think that it may happen to you or a family member. Do not relax, this can happen to you at anytime. Unlike the politicians no doubt they will have access to ambulances including Air Ambulances. Yet we mortals must be sacrificed for the sake of budget cuts and lying politicians.

We have an epidemic of Chickungunya  and yet no one can test for it on the island. We hear from the PM down that Barbados has the  BEST of everything, Health care, Civil Service, Education and yet we cannot meet the needs of our population. Nothing functions as it should. One thing for sure is that we have the BEST BRASSBOWLS ( thank you Bushie) on the island in charge.  Where will we go from here? We brag about being first world and yet operating as a third world country. Let us hope that Ebola never reaches our shores because we have already signed our death certificate.  How much more can the population take?

With a very heavy heart,

  1. @ GEORGIE PORGIE,

THANKS FOR YOUR “FREE” MEDICAL ADVICE.

ONE MORE THING. DO YOU THINK IRMINE BELL COULD HELP DOMPEY?

  2. Sergeant, all the medical literature tells us that Old Age is a factor in all Cancers, Diet, Family History and Environment etc. Research has also shown that men who work in factory environment have high rates of prostate cancer, come on PG. Sergeant, as a socialized American I wouldn’t trust anything PG tells me about health relative conditions. But one has to have a professional title in Barbados, and Barbadians would believe anything these Con Arts tell them without question? Sorry, as long as there is library, an internet and doctors to counsel with, I fail to accept the opinion one fool who probably isn’t a practicing doctor, if he is a doctor at all.

  3. Hants | November 9, 2014 at 9:39 PM |
DO YOU THINK IRMINE BELL COULD HELP DOMPEY?

HONESTLY, I WOULD NOT EXPOSE IRMINE TO SUCH DANGER EXCEPT IN THE PRESENCE OF TWO DRS AND HER CHIEF JUSTICE BROTHER SO THAT WE COULD COMMIT HIM TO A DUNGEON IN A PSYCHIATRIC INSTITUTION

  4. Seriously though David..
Why don’t you just ban the man…?
…even if he comes back with another name ….we will spot the goat in him within two posts…
    Bushie votes – B.A.D.B.U.
(Ban the Ass Dompey from BU)

  5. @GEORGIE PORGIE,

    I CONCUR. LOL

  6. The dynamic duo serves a purpose on BU.

  7. Be conscientious about your own health and do not rely solely on the opinion of your personal doctor. Do your own reseach, so you’re able to ask the important questions which are critical to your personal survival. For example: any conscientious person ought to know the different treatments if he is diagnosed with prostate cancer, instead of relying on some doctor solely to make that determination for your the treatment options.

  8. David wrote “The dynamic duo serves a purpose on BU.”

Yes they do. They write words.

  9. @HAnts

It helps us to embrace diversity.

  10. @DOMpey

BU views your several comments using other monikers and foul language directed at another commenter. Be guided as to how BU must respond.

  11. It seems that Dexter JAMES & my colleague should be spending more time engaging the public about ways to prevent prostate disease rather than talking about fees for a test that they know that is unreliable.Do these men have shares in a lab doing these test?

We dont want men going for PSA tests and getting a low reading and thinking that they are well. We know better so THE FOLK IN CHARGE SHOULD BE SAYING THIS SO THAT EVERY MAN IN BARBADOS KNOWS THIS

  12. @ Dompey

Go have a look at Dr. GP’s power point presentations, you may learn something.

  13. I don’t agree that “David” should ban either Dompey or AC, in Dompey’s case Zuckerberg’s loss is David’s gain 🙂 and sometimes there is a kernel of truth in what he writes even if it is repetitive.

Face it if AC didn’t write it would be an echo chamber in here with the three musketeers for the BLP( no names no lock up) at least there is someone for wunnah to pelt brickbats at, the forum isn’t a lovenest.

  14. You are right Sargeant….but Bushie would still ban his tail just for spite …LOL … and for a few days of peace while he figures out a new name… 🙂

  15. are-we-there-yet Avatar

I essentially agree with Sargeant above re. banning of ac and Dompey. Dompey takes more licks (cumulatively) than he shares out and his name changes shouldn’t fool anyone and ac, while her posts are almost totally predictable, sometimes provides good information.

And we all have a choice on whether to read or respond, or not, to any particular post or poster. Banning should be a last resort measure as you have demonstrated several times.

  16. @are-we-there-yet

You are one of the early commenters to BU and you know we are reluctant to ban anybody. The only commenter who is banned from time to time is Jack Bowman because of what he does to degrade the blog. Dompey disrespected BU last night by using a wash pan of foul language and we had to put him in mod to cool off. It has sense been removed.

  17. @Sarge
Your prescription for Prostate Cancer BPH etc is one Ican certainly enjoy.
Could you write it out on your pad so my wife can read the advice? lol

    @Others
Be very thankful for AC and Domps, we need some COMIC relief regularly! lol

The weird comments about GP are certainly not warranted, especially since he exhibits his honesty about the PSA and “alternatives” like lycopene et al. Most allopathic Docs would resist being so straightforward, if indeed they took the time to investigate the efficacy of alternatives.

  18. @GP

So Doc, other than the PSA and DRE is there any other way to diagnose prostate health? Should we just swallow as many tomatoes and saw palmetto as we can and hope for the best?

  19. yuh see u david u are uh real speckled fowl hypocrite fuh real do uh know can;t believe u put Dompey on hold for a few cuss words ,dats part of we culture , and for four months u let a a barrage of the filthiest cuss words known to man rolled across the pages of BU underground by monkier SSS shame on u david ,

let give a shout out to my comrade and friend DOMPEY< DON:T WORRY MY FRIEND, HIGH WIND know wuh old house BE, .

  20. de hood | November 10, 2014 at 10:54 AM |
A combination of the PSA and DRE is the recommendation for the diagnose.

tomatoes and saw palmetto are good for prevention in addition to decreasing meat and fat in the diet

    prevention i better than cure

  21. MoneyBrain November 10, 2014 at 9:42 AM “Be very thankful for AC and Domps, we need some COMIC relief regularly! lol”

    I second this.

I am never sure what ac is writing about..but leave ac alone

I admire Dompey for his energy if not for his intellect. Leave Dompey alone too.

Like sex, laughter is the best medicine.

So leave Dompey and ac alone.

  22. simple simple i am sooossooo glad u do not understand my style of writing wish they were others like u, then ac would be able to say what ac bloody like without feeling the wrath and condemnation of the blp yardfowls, hope u are not one, lol

  23. But ac when we write we are always writing so that others can understand what we are writing about.

    Otherwise what is the point?

I vote for the DLP from time to time, and treasonably (lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I also vote for the BLP from time to time

  24. what is there to understand simply put it is called politics,

  25. but let me clarify, example BT i hardly understand most of any thing he says,,however ,,however i have grown accustomed to his word usage and context, therfore the moment i see the word Brass bowl,i already know what he is saying is negative and in no way offers any solution, just condemnations and a longing to keep things the way they used to be, so guess what i am usually right and no need to read,

  26. Bush Tea, Georgie Porgie, are-we-there-yet, Miller, Pachamama, Colonel Buggy and Money Brain are among those who make some very good contributions to BU. I may not always agree with their points of view, but I respect them since they are always coherent and worth reading.

  27. so what is there to understand ,,GP a religious guru of some form. stays on point usually copy and paste never having an original thought can be very vocal and combative and insulting to others opinions
Miller, ; very shrewd stays on point ! his style is to executed or shoot down his opponent cowboy and indian style,
Pachaman relentless in his idealogies and pursuit of the :right form: of goverance,
Colonel Buggy, some what timid no harm no foul.
Money Brain.easy to spot for him no matter race or color it is all about being rich.

all in all the bu household makes it easy to form conceptions and misconception more often than not very close to the truth. .

  28. Artaxerxes | November 10, 2014 at 10:44 PM |

i ALSO RESPECT YOUR VIEWS AND THE FACT THAT YOU ARE WELL TRAINED, AND BRING THAT ASPECT TO THE FORUM

THATS WHAT IS NEEDED HERE RATHER THAN MORONS SHOOTING OFF BECAUSE THEY HAVE A COMPUTER

  29. HA!Ha!Gp proved my point ..next

  30. @ac
    Excellent MIS-Conception bout MoneyBrain!!! lol

MB even wants U to be well off AC!

Would U prefer that I plan to impoverish U like some others eg DLP! lol

  31. money brain ..impoverish ac.nobody have that much control or power over ac. mine is a story called “by the sweat of your brow” no govt hand outs either ..just pure just and determination and a willingness to succeed.reading some of the comments i get the feeling that most belive it is a god given right govt supply all their needs

  32. ac
wunna done with ‘Barbados is more than an economy, is its a society”?

  33. @AC
    Excellent attitude!

  34. cyrus. barbados is more……….

that statement is above your “pay grade” never in a million years and beyond would you understand ..u too licorish !conceited and selfcentred to grasp the meaning

  35. are-we-there-yet Avatar

Following on Artaxerxes and ac’s posts above there are a few posters, whose posts I always make a point of reading no matter how busy I am as they almost always, imho, make sense; are informative; usually display deep analytical thought; are often witty and are always easy to read.

They are, in no particular order:-

    Caswell Franklin
    Bushtea
    David
    PUDRYR
    Artaxerxes
    Sargeant;
    Hants;
    Colonel Buggy;
    Observing
    Pachamama
    Robert Ross

I read such posters as ac; Dompey; Moneybrain; GP; Simple Simon; Gabriel; Anthony and some others who don’t come to mind at present, depending on the topic being discussed. Most of these occasionally pen some excellent posts.

“…that statement is above your “pay grade” never in a million years and beyond would you understand..”

It is also above Mara Thompson’s pay grade? She wants to know when her deceased husband mausoleum aka the St. John polyclinic in St. John will become operational.
Is this the same complex that was due to open in December 2012 by Donville “the twist mout” Inniss to herald in the 2013 general elections ?

If the Society in St. John was more than an economy in Six Men in St. Peter how come the polyclinic is still in mothballs?
Don’t you, ac, think that Mara should listen to your suggestions/proposals on the rich and famous making charitable contributions and donate at least $5 million from the Families First CLICO robbery account towards the completion and outfitting of the polyclinic?
Look what Rihanna has done for the QEH from her hard-earned and well deserved millions!
Ac, you fancy your chances in running for St. John next time around?

I DONT KNOW I YOU WERE ON BU IN JANUARY 2008 WHEN I EXPLAINED THAT THERE WAS NO NEED FOR A CLINIC IN ST JOHN, AND THAT IT SHOULD BE AT THE JUNCTION OF HIGHWAYS 3 & 4 DOWN BY SALTERS

What should Barbados Government Do About The St. John Polyclinic?

  38. THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM CAN BE FIXED WITH A LITTLE BIT OF MONEY AND THE ABILITY OF THOSE IN POWER TO LISTEN.

WOULD YOU BELIEVE THAT THE SYSTEM OF EXPANDED SERVICES THAT WERE ADVOCATED ON BU IN JAN 2008 ARE ACTUALLY BEING IMPLEMENTED SUCCESSFULLY IN ST LUCIA?

I WITNESSED IT FOR BY SELF AND BENEFITED THEREFROM IN 2012, WHILE TEACHING DOWN THERE

  39. Miller
St.John Polyclinic is total disaster, one of epic proportions.

  40. THE SOLUTIONS ARE SIMPLE
SOME ONE TO OVERSEE WHAT HAPPENS IN HOSPITAL AS WELL AS WHAT HAPPENS IN THE PERIPHERY

WE NEED SOME ONE WITH FULL AUTHORITY TO IMPLEMENT THE NECESSARY IDEAS AND ONE WHO CAN COMMAND THE RESPECT OF THE PUBLIC AND MEDICAL PERSONEL

WE DONT NEED A MINISTER OF HEALTH, OR DEXTER JAMES OR THESE PEOPLE WID ALL HESE HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT DEGREES

WE NEED A MAN TO GET OF HIS BACKSIDE AND GET IN THE FIELD, SPENDING A WEEK IN EACH ZONE AND THE 8TH WEEK IN REVIEW TO SEE WHAT HAS NOT BEEN DONE OR WHAT IS NEW FOR THE NUXT CYCLE OF 8 WEEKS.

E.G SUBDIVIDE ZONE 1 INTO SEVEN SUB ZONES
ORGANIZE INTENSIVE SURVEY OF THE SUBZONE TO ASCERTAIN NEEDS OF THE SUBZONE. THIS WILL INVOLVE PUBLIC HEALTH INSPECTORS AND TRAINED POSTAL OFFICERS TO LOOK IN ON THE ELDERLY

TRICYCLE AND OTHER AMBULANCES ASSIGNED TO THE ZONE THAT WORK OUT OF MBPC
COMMAND OF THE SANITATION RESOURCES IN THE HANDS OF THE MOH FOR THE ZONE AND HIS PERSONNEL

ETC ETC ETC ITS NOT REALLY THAT HARD

  41. ac
The statement that Barbados is more than an economy, it’s a society, does NOT require any special comprehension skills. After all it is just one of those catch phases which is total and utter bullshit, designed to make the masses believe in the impossible. The late DT described it to his close friend in the medical field as “gobbledygook, but my gobbledygook”

SO SPARE US THE CRAP AC, WE KNOW SHIT WHEN WE SEE IT, WHEN WE SMELL IT AND WHEN WE HEAR IT.

  42. What we have at the QEH is not an A&E:

    Watching paint dry at A&E

Eric Smith, Added 02 November 2014

Last Tuesday morning just after 9:45, I got a call telling me my mother was not well.

All ready for work, I switched plans and headed to her home. I called her general physician, who suggested that I get an ambulance and take her to the hospital.

Well, there were no ambulances. I tried another nearby doctor, whose waiting area was full to capacity, so it was on to another doctor, who offered no hope. She would have to wait on the afternoon doctor. I then headed to another doctor who, like the others, was in St George. She did not like the patient’s condition, wrote a letter and sent us directly to the Accident & Emergency Department of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).

At 1:40 p.m. I arrived at the QEH and spoke to a security guard, registered and went back outside and awaited for the orderly, who arrived in three minutes.

I was soon called to give some details about my mother. Things appeared to be going quickly. By 3 p.m. I was in the assessment centre with the nurse. I was embedded on the front line of one of the most dreaded places in Barbados, the A&E Department of our major health care institution.

My not-so-good experience started when I had to struggle with Nurse Forde to get my mother on the bed. I started to ask questions about the wheelchairs and their cleanliness. One of my first observations was that they shifted patients from wheelchair to a regular chair in the twinkling of an eye. There was no sanitising of the chairs.

James Gaskin, an orderly supervisor, had already completed his shift but was still on the job – “as you can see it is quite hectic in here”.

  43. THIS MAN SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO TAKE HIS RELATIVE TO THE POLYCLINIC IN HIS ZONE FOR TRIAGE OR STABALIZATION OR ADMISSION TO A SMALL UNIT FOR OBSERVATION

THIS USED TO BE DONE AT ST JOSEPH’S HOSPITAL IN 83-84
    THIS IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE

IF HIS RELATIVE WAS IN CRITICAL CONDITION, RELEVANT BLOODS AND XRAYS COULD BE DONE ALONG WITH CONSULTATION WITH THE RELEVANT DR AT QEH, AND AN IV SET UP

THE PATIENT COULD THEN BE TRANSPORTED TO AN UNCROWDED ER AT QEH OR GO STRAIGHT TO THE RELEVANT WARD

YOU DONT NEED A PhD IN HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATION FOR THIS

WE NEED SOMEONE WHO CARES AND WHO HAS VISION WHO THE AUTHORITIES WILL LISTEN TO

  44. Georgie Porgie | November 11, 2014 at 5:39 PM |

Although I’m not trained in the medical field, I understand your suggestions relative to zoning…. they make sense.

It shows, contrary to some who think otherwise, most of us have taken advantage of the forum BU has provided for us, to offer constructive criticism of government policies, while bringing alternative solutions to solve the many of the problems facing this Barbados.

We, as citizens and tax payers, reserve the right to be critical of this administration when, in our view, they are not doing a good job.

The government and its supporters have demonstrated their immaturity by exhibiting disgust at those on BU who dare criticize them, [labeling such critics as being unpatriotic and BLP yard-fowls], rather than embracing the suggestions being offered.

IN MY OPINION GEORGIE, YOU HAVE PRESENTED SOME VERY GOOD IDEAS.

  45. @David November 11, 2014 at 5:54 PM “What we have at the QEH is not an A&E:”

Because people show up who have not had accidents and who are not having emergencies. We need better public education so that people do not go to the QEH unless they had a real accident or unless that are having a real emergency…all other to the polyclinics once they are open…and maybe we need to keep at least one polyclinic open 24-7 with the requisite medical and security staff.

I BELIEVE THAT WE CAN DO A LOT WITH THE LITTLE WE HAVE
THAT IS HOW WE WERE RAISED WHEN WE GREW UP POOR
ALSO I BELIEVE WE HAVE THE PEOPLE TO DO WHAT IS NEEDED

BUT FROM MY EXPERIENCE IN THE PUBLIC SERVICE THERE IS TOO MUCH ENVY GREED AND STUPID COMPETITION
