Ambulance shortage - photo credit: Advocate newspaper
Ambulance shortage – photo credit: Advocate newspaper

I have been waiting to see if any of the BU posters will at least post something on this very serious problem we have with our health care system. But as usual no one has come forward as yet.

Recently I was at Sandy Crest where there were two patients who needed to get to the QEH asap. The staff were calling around for ambulances and not one could be found. Finally one was located and it took the first patient to the hospital. The next patient was going into cardiac arrest and every attempt to find another ambulance was in vain. I asked if the first ambulance could come back and take the patient to the QEH and was told that it was no longer available. You could hear the frantic calls by the doctors to the QEH about the patient was in a terrible state. He needed to get to ICU ASAP but no one could find an ambulance. I read in the papers recently about the death of a patient who couldn’t get an ambulance to take her to the hospital while her family watched her painful death.

I heard on a call in program about another incident where someone’s family was in ICU and the drip had run dry. The family member asked if another drip was needed. The reply was that they have the drip but not the medication to put into the drip. This was another ICU case. The family member frantically called around and found the medication at Sandy Crest, bought it and took it back to the QEH. This caller said she had tears in her eyes.

Our  health care has been compromised. The lack of ambulances are due to the lack of gurneys so the ambulance drivers report to work and play dominoes.  How can any government stand up and broadcast to the world that they are training for Ebola and yet there are no ambulances specially outfitted.

Barbadians are being asked to pay for their health care. What are they getting for their money? Death because of lack of ambulances and critical drugs?  This is very serious and many of you posters probably do not think that it may happen to you or a family member. Do not relax, this can happen to you at anytime. Unlike the politicians no doubt they will have access to ambulances including Air Ambulances. Yet we mortals must be sacrificed for the sake of budget cuts and lying politicians.

We have an epidemic of Chickungunya  and yet no one can test for it on the island. We hear from the PM down that Barbados has the  BEST of everything, Health care, Civil Service, Education and yet we cannot meet the needs of our population. Nothing functions as it should. One thing for sure is that we have the BEST BRASSBOWLS ( thank you Bushie) on the island in charge.  Where will we go from here? We brag about being first world and yet operating as a third world country. Let us hope that Ebola never reaches our shores because we have already signed our death certificate.  How much more can the population take?

With a very heavy heart,

  1. Also, do a Google to see the organizations that contribute every week to the hospital, Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary, Optimist, PTAs and there is a private sector committee comprised of captains of industry who oversee donations and how said donations are spent. People on the Rock would know this. The QEH budget falls short every year in recent years and they can only keep going because of donations which is not a sustainable way to run a hospital.

  2. To build on the earlier point, many Barbadians who have relatives and friends admitted to the QEH take supplies, it has become obligatory i.e.Soaps, toiletries, food etc to ensure relatives are comfortable.

  3. The more the merrier ,the door should not be closed ,,it should also be abundantly clear that the many few who have given may have over exceeded their limit and a called for those who have never been charitable or might have stop given for what ever reason may be necessary at this time as govt revenues fail to meet required targets effectively
However using the QEH problem as a :wedge issue “: and a political juggernaut to fan the flames does nothing to help or heal.

  4. The healthcare system and in particular the QEH has always been used as a political football by BOTH political parties. We can go back to Caddle, Taitt and the lot. There was high hope when we moved from being managed by central government to a Board. The trend down has continued.

  5. @Bush Tea

Would appreciate if you accept you have made a COMMONSENSE point about working to change attitude to the environment and avoid comment directed at others who want to make all the blogs about them and fitting responses into a political agenda. You may recall when BU started in 2007 we were labelled a DLP mouthpiece, in 2014 it is the reverse. It means we are doing something right. Try to focus on the issues, we have received some feedback about the quality of debate and BU agrees for the most part. We can respect positions, we may even get upset but when it becomes protracted (blog after damn blog) it causes many to tune out.

  6. The DLP is the party governing Barbados for the last 6 years.

    Governing includes managing crises.

There is a presumption that the people we elect are capable of giving direction and working with the leadership in the Civil service.

The Ministers need to roll down the tinted windows and see and smell the garbage.
They need to visit the QEH.
They need to put down the single malt and think of what could happen when they driving home from de woman house and crash de Benz.

    No ambulance…yuh dead.

They need to “listen to the enemy” and ignore their ash kishing yardfowls.

  7. Compare Barbados Health Care System including Accident & Emergency, and Ambulance Services to the UK

They are expected to see a Patient in A&E within 4 hours and a very high percentage targets to meet annually of around 90% set by GVT and face fines when over the targets sets.

“Those of us who live on the Rock and or keep our ears to the ground are aware the QEH could not survive without the help from charities and others (philanthropists).”

The current DLP political administration and its BU apologists are always asking its critics and opponents to come up with alternative ideas and proposals to help deal with the fiscal and social problems facing the country.

Sometime ago I put on the BU table a proposal to help fund the QEH by way of a Health Lottery. This was also proposed by Kammie Holder.

Given the critical state of the QEH due primarily to parlous financing why isn’t this proposal being seriously considered by the government?
The basic infrastructure is already in place within a seasoned culture of gambling (except on Sundays). Shouldn’t the punters be willing to take a chance towards a much nobler and worthy cause such as protecting the health (and indeed wealth) of the nation?

Hants I know that it hurted yuh balls to say that! Thank you

  10. Bush Tea

There is something seriously wrong with a man who has a proclivility for vitiating others, to fuel his craving need of recognition. I have read through most of the blogs here, and I have found that you have used myself and AC, as analogies to ascertain your cheap thrills. It isn’t about that man! It is about defending a point of view with corroborative and substantiative evidence that is capable of swaying the opposing narrative to your way of seeing things.

  11. @ Islandgal who wrote “Hants I know that it hurted yuh balls to say that! ”

Not at all IslandGal. The only thing that could do that is an over enthusiastic female. lol

  12. @Hants
Please dont remind me of the disadvantage of big balls!

  13. @ Dompey
…please accept Bushie’s condolences, but the bushman’s has had his whacker trained on brass and unfortunately, you and ac tend to provide real life, tested, and interactive examples of bowls to make Bushie’s points….

…perhaps you two can move over to the DLP blog where you will be in line for some serious hero-worship? …who knows, perhaps Wickham or even Dictionary may come back….

    ……like the ‘eclipses’..? 🙂

look Colonel u need to hush, i can point u to articles back in the days of plenty under the BLP govt when the QEH was in a dilapidated state and supplies were in serious declined uh really need to hush yardfowl

Some would suggest that Jesus did indeed have a wife and child (ren?). Mary Magdalene to be exact, supposedly travelled the Med to Southern France and lived there to her death. Statistically, Jesus should have about 15,000 descendants alive today.

Surely Domps you dont totally trust what was included or excluded, in the Bible, by those men who met at Nicaea in like 325 AD??? After all, much can be ” LOST ” in 300+ years. Would they have given any credit to Mary Magdalene, a woman? Why not discredit her by impugning her character?

  16. Moneybrain

You’re at liberty to believe what you so choose sir, but until I am fully convinced that the Bible is a fraud much like Bush Tea. I will squeez tightly to my Christian convictions,in much the same light as Bush Tea squeez tightly to his lonely pillow at night. I hope I have made a satisfactory attempt to answer your inquiry sir.

  17. i have accepted the rationale that after many years of feasting off the fatted lamb, that bajans like it so and nothing on this gods earth is going to change that, the political firestorm caused by this and other social issues requires a deep cleansing of the mind ! body ! and soul that only a dictator can resolve, good luck yuh all. bush tea and pachama might get their way after all.

Wait ! ac ,what are you suggesting ? .

  19. Moneybrain

That question could have been better asked by Satan drinking buddy Bush Tea. This case study for a brainless fart, seems to have the answers to the Kennedy assassination, and the whereabouts of Jimmy Hoffa’s body. Poor soul, with an ego bigger than his intellect.

  20. @Domps
    YES!
BUT please remember that God made me intelligent and should expect QUESTIONS not just blind faith on everything. Why did Jesus not tell Timothy he was a bloody nuisance/ troublemaker?

    Jesus loves intelligent skeptics too!
Jimmi Hoffa was found years ago, didnt you hear?

Yes they grabbed Tammi Faye Bakker and scrubbed her ugly white face of all the make-up and lo and behold there was Jimmi Hoffa! lol

I was not questioning Christianity or your faith, just some of the info that the multitude swill down like the 5 fish and 2 breads without water or liquid.
Faith in the key principles is one thing BUT SKEPTICISM regarding details that were recorded many, many years after the fact are another.

My parents should have called me Thomas! Instead of another disciple—–,
    nearly slipped up there! NOT!

  21. Does ANYBODY know what is the latest with the St.John Polyclinic? Will it be a stillborn project, again?

  22. Moneybrain

This concept of Mary Magdalane being this central figure within Christian doctrine isn’t so readily accepted by all of the denominations within Christendom. This concept is widely accepted within Catholic theology; as best my knowledge serves me.

In the Isaiah 55:8 of the KJV Bible God tells us that: ” For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways.” Extrapolate from that and see what you come up with brother!

Don’t believe everything the intelligence community in America feeds you Brother. Now have you seen the post mortem examination of Hoffa, or the DNA testing to validate your account. And was there a dental examination done to corroborate this account? Extraordinary claims requires, extraordinary evidence my friend.

Have you ever question the threshold of your human intelligence? And do you think that our human knowledge at times brings us to an explanatory gap?

  23. Moneybrain

Now, sir are you aware of the fact that Albert Einstein’s brain is being kept in Jar at Princeton Hospital for scientific research? And reseachers have found that Einstein’s Parietal Lobe, which are implicated in math, visual and spatial cognition were 15% wider than the normal Parietal Lobe. late

  24. @millertheanunnaki | November 9, 2014 at 12:01 PM |

But, even if there is a health lottery, how will the money be SPENT???

    By lottery too????

THAT is the issue, as much as the money. Mismanage a snocone cart and yuh going mismanage a big business.

It is not only about money, it is about direction of resources, which Government is proving to be particularly inept.

More resources will just mean, more misdirection.

    As Gearbox says, Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

    ……………………………………………………………………………………….
One thing for sure, if Albert Einstein’s brain goes missing from Princeton Hospital . No one can pin the burglary on you. You have a concrete alibi. Bushie, Hants ,Miller and others will vouch for you

  26. Colonel not suggesting a thing. all i am saying is that barbadians are the new israelities,

  27. I beg a few minutes to interject a few words into the sea of bovine excrement afloat on this blog.

Recently I saw an article in the local papers about the need to reduce the costs of the PSA test, even though that the PSA is not a reliable index in the diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Please check the relevant and numerous articles online that support this fact.
I read also that 100 men were dying in Bim yearly from prostate cancer.
    Why are we surprised?

Just keep up the abundance of meat and fatty foods and see if the incidence will not rise further.

I also saw a clipping where the doctor who makes a killing on this disease pontificating, but I did not hear him advocating diet and the use of tomatoes for the lycopenes therein that are a preventative.

Why am I not surprised> Well in 92 when the drug PROSCAR was launched this same Dr said bodly and loudly in the meeting THESE PEOPLE WILL PUT ME OUT OF BUSYNESS

Why are not the men taking lycopenes and saw palmetto berry (proven to have the same mechanism of action as Proscar) for restricting prostate enlargement – even if not preventive malignant growth.

    Thanks!

The bull shitters can continue in thier faecal exchanges

  28. AC
That’s a good one AC…. can’t stop laughing. But I think that culprit Bush Tea, out of the lot would be on the FBI most wanted list because he is most in need of a brain. That’s brainless fart!

  29. Georgie Porgie

If the PSA test isn’t a reliable indicator of Prostate Cancer then what is? The PSA test examines the number right? And anything elevated about a reading of 5 it should indicate that there is something wrong, apart from difficulty urinating or blood in the urine or roughness to the prostate during the finger examination right?

  30. the PSA is not a reliable index in the diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Please check the relevant and numerous articles online that support this fact.

  31. Georgie Porgie

Lycopenes and Saw Palmetto is of no effect for those men who have a family history of prostate cancer, such as father or grandfather.

  32. GP
    Talk to them nuh!
I do the PSA to please my Urologist who I believe agrees that the PSA on its own is very unreliable. (just like mammography for the ladies) Tons of false positives!
I eat loads of cooked Tomatoes but too much protein though.

  33. MoneyBrain | November 9, 2014 at 7:22 PM |
i TEND TO ADD VALUE TO BU ON MEDICINE FROM MY FIRST APPEARANCE IN 2008

BUT I DONT ARGUE WITH MORONS MAN
I AM GLAD THAT YOU ARE ON YOUR LYCOPENES
    CUT OUT THE FAT THOUGH

  34. Georgie Porgie

Come now, no medical test is a 100% reliable. Now, about two years ago the medical community here in America decided that is wasn’t necessary for men get they PSA check annually. And what I understand from my doctor is, the PSA test was producing false positives which resulted in doctors ordering unnecessary tests. But prior to that PSA test was as reliable as the finger examination or the other related indicators.

  35. @Georgie Porgie November 9, 2014 at 7:14 PM “Please check the relevant and numerous articles online that support this fact.”

Most f us don’t know where to look to find relevant reliable articles on Prostate cancer. Do us a favor please and post some of them here on BU for us. Thanks.

I eat tomatoes because I like tomatoes, they are fairly easy to grow here and they are often cheap.

  36. sIMPLE SIMON
Just Google the role of PSA in diagnosis of prostate cancer or similar thing

The point I was making is that it is thought that lycopenes and saw palmetto assist in reducing prostatic hyperplasia/hypertrophy, and that instead of arguing about PSA tests we should be promoting prevention in all men from early in their lives.I think that the increased meat and fat in the current fast food diet is contributing to the increasing incidence of prostate cancer in Bim

  37. Porgie, shut to F up. Who does not know that a high fat diet is a contributing factor in prostate cancer? Bro that’s general knowledge; you want to be doctor.

Listen asshole my father struggle with prostate Cancer for five years, and during that time I read everything I got my hands, plus I spoke to many doctors in the field asshole. This what the medical literature indicates imbecile. And here another fact that the medical literature tell us: by the age of 80 most men with have Prostate Cancer, but they will die from other diseases stupid.

  38. I understand that soursop – the fruit, leaves and bark are also good in fighting some kinds of cancers. I have eaten so many tomatoes this summer and fall a neighbour asked if I dont get acid reflux. I asked her what was that. I have preserved about 3 dozen jars for winter. I even put them in rice.

Walmart sells soursop @$1.97 a pound. I buy one every week along with a breadfruit and 4 eddoes.

  39. There is nothing sweeter than a soursop punch. Pity we don’t see too many of them in Barbados like in days of old.

  40. @ Dompey

What medical school did you attend? It is one thing to read and another to understand that which one readeth.

Imagine you calling Dr. GP an “asshole”, when we all know that you are not only a donkey, but the donkey’s rear end…….an ass’s ass.

  41. Georgie Porgie

Here the facts on inherited prostate cancer: only about 5% to 10% of all cancers result directly from gene defects called: Mutation inherited from a parent. If there are four brothers, all with prostate cancer, and they’ve all inherited the same region of the 1 chromosome from their father who has it, too then is no longer who you would predict by chance.

  42. Pat
Oh shut up! And go to bed, where you’re needed for services.

  43. Dear David: Every Friday and Saturday in Cheapside market you can get soursops, and sometime sugar apples too.

But I tend to agree with Georgie Porgie the high fat diets are killing us. I remember the good old days when meat was a Sunday thing, and my mother bought one and a half pounds of mutton from the butcher to serve a family of 12, mutton stew, and peas and rice, with a slice of sweet potato longside the rice…and everybody was full and happy.

Nowadays meat is served one pound per person…and it killing we

  44. Simple Simon

Like you, I too remember the good old days when meat was a Sunday thing,
Like you, I too remember the good old days PERIOD!

  45. Simple Simon

You do not have to agree with Georgie Porgie on anything because any man who is conscientious about his health, ought to know this very basic fact as it relates to prostate cancar.

  46. Simple Simon

It is the transfats that impacts heart health, prostate health and many others aspect of your health in general . Now, this is general knowledge and the Barbadian society ought be aware of this. And that fool Pat gine ask me if I went to medical school, for amounts to very basic information any proactive society ought to know.

  47. GP
I read also that 100 men were dying in Bim yearly from prostate cancer
    Why are we surprised?
    ++++++++
That represents approximately 2 per week, how many men die annually in Barbados and what percentage of them die from prostate cancer? This is just an inquiry since prostate cancer is touted as a leading cause of death for men while other causes are overlooked.
I heard Dr. Mike Evans on CBC (Canada) today and the attached link is conclusion on PSA.

BTW there was another bit of research recently that frequent shagging was a solid recipe for good prostate health so to prevent any clogging of the pipes make sure the pestle is frequently in the mortar.

  48. Let see if this works

  49. THANKS SARGE
OBSERVERS WILL KNOW THAT PPTS ON PROSTATE DISEASE AND THE PSA WERE PUBLISHED ON BU YEARS AGO
