@ABEDSBARBADOS I was having a great day until I walked into ABED’S & SONS COMPANY LIMITED. First let me state that I have always experienced exceptional customer service from this business up until today. My best friend and I went to purchase ribbon for our upcoming pageant like we have been doing since 2004. As we walked to the ribbon/zips/thread section I noticed that only one sales rep was on duty. He seemed to be new but very pleasant and working diligently to help customers. The line was long so it was clear that each of us would have to wait our turn.

After 37 minutes 20 seconds of waiting a young lady walked behind the ribbon desk. She did not say “Good Afternoon” or ask “Who is next in line?” Instead she picked at her nails, played with her hair and started to form conversation with sales rep who was passing by. Then she asked someone for a pen or pencil no one had so she left behind the counter and went for a pencil. When she returned she flicked though a receipt book for five minutes without looking up at any of the waiting customers. Suddenly a man walked up to the counter. She turned her attention to him and started to serve him. Clearly the 3 people who were waiting patiently in front of my best friend & I to be served were INVISIBLE. My best friend said, “That gentleman came after all of us. Is that the way it is now done?” I was shocked because normally she is never one to complain. The sales rep did not even acknowledge her comment or pay any of us attention. My best friend gently stated,, “Excuse me man we were here waiting patiently.” Again the sales rep did not acknowledge her.

By this time I had had enough. I walked to the front of the store and asked to speak to the supervisor. I was pointed to the direction of a man. I walked to him and said, “Excuse me sir, are you the supervisor?” He BARKED, “yes what you want?” I was taken aback so I said quite calmly, ‘May we step aside so that I may have a word with you?” The man SHOUTED the top of his voice “WHATEVER YOU WANT TO SAY SAY UM HERE CAUSE I AINT MOVING!” By this time his attitude, defensive stance and tone of voice indicated that he was not the most professional person to be in a senior position at this company which I have always shopped at. I said, “Sir I have a complaint to make about one of the sales reps.” to which he replied, ‘LOOK I AINT GOT NO TIME FOR U OR NO COMPLAINTS TODAY!” I said, Oh? Is that how you treat customers?” He started to holler, “WANNA SO DOES COME IN HERE TO CONFUSE THE PLACE! LOOKA IF U GOTS A PROBLEM LEFT FROM UP IN HERE!’ I was offended, insulted and extremely disturbed. I said to him, ‘I am not leaving!” to which he said, “Stop there then til Abed come downstairs like I care!” I stopped and I stared at him in shock. He looked at me grabbed a receipt book, slammed it down on the counter and said, “IF YOU COULD READ LOOKA ALL THE STORE CONTACT INFO THERE. EMAIL, TELEPHONE NUMBERS. IF YOU GOT A COMPLAINT, EMAIL UM YA ASS!” Today I learnt that customers who have problems and try to lodge a complaint are referred to as “ASSES.”

I was in too much shock to respond. However I had taken all the relevant notes on my ipad. I walked back to my best-friend who was still in the line waiting and the female sales rep was still dealing with the gentleman who was only purchasing buttons. The poor boy was struggling but trying his best to attend to the customers. Had I not needed the 40 yards of satin ribbon, pins etc. I would have taken my $151.87 cents elsewhere. It may not sound like a lot of money but I wish that Faustins or Moses had what I needed because today I encountered the worst customer service in my life from RICHARD HOLDER. Yes I got your name. Barbados is too small so even when you refused to tell me one of the staff did!!

The LORD in heaven above knows how Mr. RICHARD HOLDER – supervisor on duty treated me in front of staff & customers who shook their head in shame. You are a DISGRACE to Abed’s & Sons Company Limited and should be FIRED. To the sales rep Miss Ifill – you need to take a course in customer service because you have no manners or sense or propriety.

The best part of being in Abeds for over 90 minutes was the hug and kiss that I received from Justin xxxxx!!

I hope that Eddie Abed reads this post because I know that he too would be shocked at how his staff behaves in his absence.

  2. The funny thing is that same “assistant manager” doesnt allow his workers to be delinquent and the workers assign to that section of the gents department are very mannerly. If the service was bad SIMPLY leave, you stated you could have taken your business else where. At this time of yr the store is extremely busy. If you were in another store you would’ve leff and go else where. All over the service is poor from Government back down to Private. There are two sides to the story and most of the time customers always feel they are right. Nobody kisses ass Ms.Chase, spend your money where you feel free to.You got “bad service” and you are “traumatized” , IT AINT THE FIRST OR THE LAST HUNNY GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel sorry for you buddy because you yourself need to read the Bible with a little more understanding. Haven’t you heard of free- will and self- determination? The same free-will and self- determination Adam and Eve usurped in the Garden of Eden to contravened God’s divine – directives.. PG, you’re acting like the Jewish community back in Spinoza’s days who ostracized him being a pantheist. Spinoza, saw God in nature rather that the supernatural God his Jewish brothers understood him to be.. PG, a word of caution, rather than using the Hebrew Scripture as your sole authority on understanding the idea of God, it is best you study the history surrounding the Biblical events your trying to forced feed others.

    I can hardly imagine a world without free- thinkers like: Darwin, Marx, Spinoza, Galileo Newton, Jefferson, Einstein and the likes. These were the men who challenged the established orthodoxy and brought the paradigmatic shift to the way in which we view our world today. And whether we agree or disagree with their ideologies, we can’t but to applaud their efforts. Now, have you taken the time to question your religious convictions as did Free- thinkers have? Or did you just accept them at face value like the rest of us? Brother, it is unintelligible to plaster biblical scriptures on a blog and then expect scientific minded people to accept them without some kind of empirical proof. Yes, we’re cognizant of the fact that the order in the universe speaks to God’s existence, but that in itself, does little to convince scientific as well as deep- thinking people of His true existence.

How sad, sorry to hear of your unfortunate incident, if i may call it such, but yes customer service is becoming a serious issue quite recently here in this little island of ours and for what, the manner he took was unprofessional, but again being unprofessional seems to be quite the norm nowadays… recently i went to get an issue rectify with my digi phone, obviously if the agent had to listen to a recording she would have to place the handset to her ear or what she did some time later was operate the speaker….at this time she is playing with her phone trying to download a sound by porgy and murda, i knew this since she openly said she trying to do so….during this encounter she asked for my cell # which she wrote on a piece of paper….all along my friend and i were exchanging glances and shaking our head….after it became unbearable that she was more interested in downloading her song and not assisting much with my phone i said to her since its obvious that you can’t sort my phone it makes no sense waiting around, during this time i retrieved my cell # written on the paper, took up my phone and proceed out the door which at this point i said to her continue to download porgy and murda….

  20. To Miss Shepherd … I have never read such utter bull of crock… What you wrote is ignorance to the highest power. We in Barbados need proper training in customer service thank good I had 12 years in such a field to know that . you do not encourage that slackness. But because it is busy doesn’t give no one the right to behave unprofessionally… Without us the customers they would be no you. Further more if you had read what she said clearly you won’t be responding so dumb … She said if the others had it she would’ve taken her money elsewhere …she needed it that’s why she stayed. If I’m spending my money you better treat me right. But that speaks a lot about you.. Like you would take any type of treatment. Smh

  22. The thing that got me is that she said; she waited up to 37mins…why then she had not asked the guy that was there for assistance earlier…why made it looked as if it was the other sales rept fault that was neither presence and had just came.

Unless you know the person behind the country, plant to wait for ages to get assistance and when you do, make sure you follow the person around, cause it’s likely they will try to lose you in the maze…

    Today I was in Sewing World, and as I entered and questioned an attendant, who was folding material,she immediately dropped what she was doing, showed me the material I was enquiring about, and had it cut and folded in less than four minutes. Yes I had to followed her about the store ,as she was trying to located a cash register that was free,so that I would not have to wait too long . She found one with a few people waiting and I was quickly served. I handed the cashier the money and was surprised that she was handing me back a $50 note. The new notes had stuck together, and I had tendered $50 in excess. I was in and out of the store in less than 10 minutes.
    This is not the first time that I have shopped at Sewing World,and have found the service and staff excellant.

    @ CATTY LIAR…….You asked a question PLEASE READ the above for the answer! The female sales associate was extremely RUDE and lacked common courtesy to the others waiting in line.

    The problem in Barbados is that we settle for so little and believe when we demand service we are making trouble for the employees. We have endured this slovenly customer service for TOO LONG on this island. This man has been there for 27 years or more and has been behaving like this towards customers. Why he is still employed there only he and his boss knows. He should be sent to work in the stock room away from the public. The young lady should be sent on a training course pronto.


  25. im reading these comments and i am smiling, there are 5 points of courtesy, body language, smile, speech,eye contact and parting phrases,im not going to say much on this but im going to add my piece,being professional in a job,is the most important part,that why so many young people have no job, cause they dont know how to approach people, the young gentleman was trying his best and the young lady that was filing her nails ,instead of doing that came and saw that that he was struggling should of given him a hand to get the customers off him, doesnt really matter if she is working in that department or not im sure all were cross trained to work in different areas and know some background of that particular position,the supervisor ,totally unprofessional and slack,that is not the way it is done,and if she chosse to take her money somewhere else or not ,you should always be professional about your job regardless of the situation. very bad customer service,

  28. I would say that generally you receive decent service in Barbados.On the odd occasion a person will receive subpar service, in such cases I exercise patience & move on. I have a lot of patience & refuse to allow a rude uncouth person to ruin my day. Maybe I have adapted to the level of service in Barbados. Life is too short! I agree that persons who are aggrieved by the shoddy service here should complain as is their right.
